Superpixels are a useful representation to reduce the complexity of image data. However, to combine superpixels with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in an end-to-end fashion, one requires extra models to generate superpixels and special operations such as graph convolution. In this paper, we propose a way to implicitly integrate a superpixel scheme into CNNs, which makes it easy to use superpixels with CNNs in an end-to-end fashion. Our proposed method hierarchically groups pixels at downsampling layers and generates superpixels. Our method can be plugged into many existing architectures without a change in their feed-forward path because our method does not use superpixels in the feed-forward path but use them to recover the lost resolution instead of bilinear upsampling. As a result, our method preserves detailed information such as object boundaries in the form of superpixels even when the model contains downsampling layers. We evaluate our method on several tasks such as semantic segmentation, superpixel segmentation, and monocular depth estimation, and confirm that it speeds up modern architectures and/or improves their prediction accuracy in these tasks.
Modern deep learning algorithms have triggered various image segmentation approaches. However most of them deal with pixel based segmentation. However, superpixels provide a certain degree of contextual information while reducing computation cost. In our approach, we have performed superpixel level semantic segmentation considering 3 various levels as neighbours for semantic contexts. Furthermore, we have enlisted a number of ensemble approaches like max-voting and weighted-average. We have also used the Dempster-Shafer theory of uncertainty to analyze confusion among various classes. Our meth…
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is the main instrument utilized for the detection of oil slicks on the ocean surface. In SAR images, some areas affected by ocean phenomena, such as rain cells, upwellings, and internal waves, or discharge from oil spills appear as dark spots on images. Dark spot detection is the first step in the detection of oil spills, which then become oil slick candidates. The accuracy of dark spot segmentation ultimately affects the accuracy of oil slick identification. Although some advanced deep learning methods that use pixels as processing units perform well in remote s…

In this paper we propose a CNN architecture for semantic image segmentation. We introduce a new 'bilateral inception' module that can be inserted in existing CNN architectures and performs bilateral filtering, at multiple feature-scales, between superpixels in an image. The feature spaces for bilateral filtering and other parameters of the module are learned end-to-end using standard backpropagation techniques. The bilateral inception module addresses two issues that arise with general CNN segmentation architectures. First, this module propagates information between (super) pixels while respec…

Advances in remote sensing technology have led to the capture of massive amounts of data. Increased image resolution, more frequent revisit times, and additional spectral channels have created an explosion in the amount of data that is available to provide analyses and intelligence across domains, including agriculture. However, the processing of this data comes with a cost in terms of computation time and money, both of which must be considered when the goal of an algorithm is to provide real-time intelligence to improve efficiencies. Specifically, we seek to identify nutrient deficient areas…
Computer vision algorithms with pixel-wise labeling tasks, such as semantic segmentation and salient object detection, have gone through a significant accuracy increase with the incorporation of deep learning. Deep segmentation methods slightly modify and fine-tune pre-trained networks that have hundreds of millions of parameters. In this work, we question the need to have such memory demanding networks for the specific task of salient object segmentation. To this end, we propose a way to learn a memory-efficient network from scratch by training it only on salient object detection datasets. Ou…
While robotic manipulation of rigid objects is quite straightforward, coping with deformable objects is an open issue. More specifically, tasks like tying a knot, wiring a connector or even surgical suturing deal with the domain of Deformable Linear Objects (DLOs). In particular the detection of a DLO is a non-trivial problem especially under clutter and occlusions (as well as self-occlusions). The pose estimation of a DLO results into the identification of its parameters related to a designed model, e.g. a basis spline. It follows that the stand-alone segmentation of a DLO might not be suffic…
Recent self-supervised models have demonstrated equal or better performance than supervised methods, opening for AI systems to learn visual representations from practically unlimited data. However, these methods are typically classification-based and thus ineffective for learning high-resolution feature maps that preserve precise spatial information. This work introduces superpixels to improve self-supervised learning of dense semantically rich visual concept embeddings. Decomposing images into a small set of visually coherent regions reduces the computational complexity by $\mathcal{O}(1000)$…

Supervised training a deep neural network aims to "teach" the network to mimic human visual perception that is represented by image-and-label pairs in the training data. Superpixelized (SP) images are visually perceivable to humans, but a conventionally trained deep learning model often performs poorly when working on SP images. To better mimic human visual perception, we think it is desirable for the deep learning model to be able to perceive not only raw images but also SP images. In this paper, we propose a new superpixel-based data augmentation (SPDA) method for training deep learning mode…

In computer vision, superpixels have been widely used as an effective way to reduce the number of image primitives for subsequent processing. But only a few attempts have been made to incorporate them into deep neural networks. One main reason is that the standard convolution operation is defined on regular grids and becomes inefficient when applied to superpixels. Inspired by an initialization strategy commonly adopted by traditional superpixel algorithms, we present a novel method that employs a simple fully convolutional network to predict superpixels on a regular image grid. However, rarely is superpixel segmentation examined within the context of deep convolutional neural network architectures. This paper presents a novel neural architecture that exploits the superpixel feature space. The visual feature space is organized using superpixels to provide the neural network with a substructure of the images. As the superpixels associate the visual feature space with …

The high anatomical variability of organs in the abdomen, such as the pancreas, prevents many segmentation methods from achieving high accuracies when compared to other segmentation of organs like the liver, heart or kidneys. Recently, the availability of large annotated training sets and the accessibility of affordable parallel computing resources via GPUs have made it feasible for "deep learning" methods such as convolutional networks (ConvNets) to succeed in image classification tasks. Recently, the concept of unsupervised learning for superpixel segmentation via CNNs has been studied. Essentially, such methods generate superpixels by convolutional neural network (CNN) employed on a single image, and such CNNs are trained without any labels or further information. Thus, such approach relies on the incorporation of priors, typically by designing an objective function that guides the solution towards a meaningful superpixel segmentation. In this paper we propose three key elements to improve the efficacy of such networks: (i) the similarity of the \emph{soft} superpixelated im…

Then the CRF parameters are learnt using a structured support vector machine (SSVM). Recent deep learning approaches have incorporated CRFs into Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), with some even training the CRF end-to-end with the rest of the network. However, these approaches have not employed higher order potentials, which have previously been shown to significantly improve segmentation performance. In this paper, we demonstrate that two types of higher o…

Secondly, they can not label foreground objects accurately due to the dataset bias. Thirdly, in the refinement stage, the traditional Markov Random Filed (MRF) inference is prone to over smoothness. In this paper we address three different computer vision tasks using a single basic architecture: depth prediction, surface normal estimation, and semantic labeling. We use a multiscale convolutional network that is able to adapt easily to each task using only small modifications, regressing from the input image to the output map directly. Our method progressively refines predictions using a sequence of scales, and captures many image details without any superpixels or low-level segmentation. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on benchmarks for all three tasks.

Superpixels are higher-order perceptual groups of pixels in an image, often carrying much more information than the raw pixels. There is an inherent relational structure to the relationship among different superpixels of an image such as adjacent superpixels are neighbours of each other. Our interest here is to treat these relative positions of various superpixels as relational information of an image. This relational information can convey higher-order spatial information about the image, such as the relationship between superpixels representing two eyes in an image of a cat. That is, two eye…
