Inspection of power line infrastructures must be periodically conducted by electric companies in order to ensure reliable electric power distribution. Research efforts are focused on automating the power line inspection process by looking for strategies that satisfy different requirements expressed in terms of potential damage and faults detection. This problem comes up with the need of safe planning and control techniques for autonomous robots to perform visual inspection tasks. Such an application becomes even more interesting and of critical importance when considering a multi-robot extension. In this paper, we propose to compute feasible and constrained trajectories for a fleet of quad-rotors leveraging on Signal Temporal Logic (STL) specifications. The planner allows to formulate rather complex missions avoiding obstacles and forbidden areas along the path. Simulations results achieved in MATLAB show the effectiveness of the proposed approach leading the way to experimental tests on the hardware.

Given a heterogeneous group of robots executing a complex task represented in Linear Temporal Logic, and a new set of tasks for the group, we define the task update problem and propose a framework for automatically updating individual robot tasks given their respective existing tasks and capabilities. Our heuristic, token-based, conflict resolution task allocation algorithm generates a near-optimal assignment for the new task. We demonstrate the scalability of our approach through simulations of multi-robot tasks.
This paper investigates the task coordination of multi-robot where each robot has a private individual temporal logic task specification; and also has to jointly satisfy a globally given collaborative temporal logic task specification. To efficiently generate feasible and optimized task execution plans for the robots, we propose a hierarchical multi-robot temporal task planning framework, in which a central server allocates the collaborative tasks to the robots, and then individual robots can independently synthesize their task execution plans in a decentralized manner. Furthermore, we propose…

A framework for computing feasible and constrained trajectories for a fleet of quad-rotors leveraging on Signal Temporal Logic (STL) specifications for power line inspection tasks is proposed in this paper. The planner allows the formulation of complex missions that avoid obstacles and maintain a safe distance between drones while performing the planned mission. An optimization problem is set to generate optimal strategies that satisfy these specifications and also take vehicle constraints into account. Further, an event-triggered replanner is proposed to reply to unforeseen events and externa…

This article presents an approach to encode Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) Specifications into a Mixed Integer Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Program (MIQCQP) footstep planner. We propose that the integration of LTL specifications into the planner not only facilitates safe and desirable locomotion between obstacle-free regions, but also provides a rich language for high-level reasoning in contact planning. Simulations of the footstep planner in a 2D environment satisfying encoded LTL specifications demonstrate the results of this research.

The optical scanning gauges mounted on the robots are commonly used in quality inspection, such as verifying the dimensional specification of sheet structures. Coverage path planning (CPP) significantly influences the accuracy and efficiency of robotic quality inspection. Traditional CPP strategies focus on minimizing the number of viewpoints or traveling distance of robots under the condition of full coverage inspection. The measurement uncertainty when collecting the scanning data is less considered in the free-form surface inspection. To address this problem, a novel CPP method with the opt…
In this paper, we propose a framework for the control of mobile robots subject to temporal logic specifications using barrier functions. Complex task specifications can be conveniently encoded using linear temporal logic. In particular, we consider a fragment of linear temporal logic which encompasses a large class of motion planning specifications for a robotic system. Control barrier functions have recently emerged as a convenient tool to guarantee reachability and safety for a system. In addition, they can be encoded as affine constraints in a quadratic program. In this paper, a fully autom…

We present a new average-based robustness score for Signal Temporal Logic (STL) and a framework for optimal control of a dynamical system under STL constraints. By averaging the scores of different specifications or subformulae at different time points, our new definition highlights the frequency of satisfaction, as well as how robustly each specification is satisfied at each time point. We show that this definition provides a better score for how well a specification is satisfied. Its usefulness in monitoring and control synthesis problems is illustrated through case studies.

Many robot control scenarios involve assessing system robustness against a task specification. If either the controller or environment are composed of "black-box" components with unknown dynamics, we cannot rely on formal verification to assess our system. Assessing robustness via exhaustive testing is also often infeasible if the space of environments is large compared to experiment cost. Given limited budget, we provide a method to choose experiment inputs which give greatest insight into system performance against a given specification across the domain. By combining smooth robustness metri…

We address the path planning problem for a team of robots satisfying a complex high-level mission specification given in the form of an Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formula. The state-of-the-art approach to this problem employs the automata-theoretic model checking technique to solve this problem. This approach involves computation of a product graph of the Buchi automaton generated from the LTL specification and a joint transition system which captures the collective motion of the robots and then computation of the shortest path using Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm. We propose MT*, an algo…

Most current methods for learning from demonstrations assume that those demonstrations alone are sufficient to learn the underlying task. This is often untrue, especially if extra safety specifications exist which were not present in the original demonstrations. In this paper, we allow an expert to elaborate on their original demonstration with additional specification information using linear temporal logic (LTL). Our system converts LTL specifications into a differentiable loss. This loss is then used to learn a dynamic movement primitive that satisfies the underlying specification, while re…

Mobile and general-purpose robots increasingly support our everyday life, requiring dependable robotics control software. Creating such software mainly amounts to implementing their complex behaviors known as missions. Recognizing the need, a large number of domain-specific specification languages has been proposed. These, in addition to traditional logical languages, allow the use of formally specified missions for synthesis, verification, simulation, or guiding the implementation. For instance, the logical language LTL is commonly used by experts to specify missions, as an input for planners…
This paper presents an algorithmic framework for control synthesis of continuous dynamical systems subject to signal temporal logic (STL) specifications. We propose a novel algorithm to obtain a time-partitioned finite automaton from an STL specification, and introduce a multi-layered framework that utilizes this automaton to guide a sampling-based search tree both spatially and temporally. Our approach is able to synthesize a controller for nonlinear dynamics and polynomial predicate functions. We prove the correctness and probabilistic completeness of our algorithm, and illustrate the effici…
In many applications, the integrals and derivatives of signals carry valuable information (e.g., cumulative success over a time window, the rate of change) regarding the behavior of the underlying system. In this paper, we extend the expressiveness of Signal Temporal Logic (STL) by introducing predicates that can define rich properties related to the integral and derivative of a signal. For control synthesis, the new predicates are encoded into mixed-integer linear inequalities and are used in the formulation of a mixed-integer linear program to find a trajectory that satisfies an STL specific…
Techniques based on Reinforcement Learning (RL) are increasingly being used to design control policies for robotic systems. RL fundamentally relies on state-based reward functions to encode desired behavior of the robot and bad reward functions are prone to exploitation by the learning agent, leading to behavior that is undesirable in the best case and critically dangerous in the worst. On the other hand, designing good reward functions for complex tasks is a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose expressing desired high-level robot behavior using a formal specification language known …
We aim to enable an autonomous robot to learn new skills from demo videos and use these newly learned skills to accomplish non-trivial high-level tasks. The goal of developing such autonomous robot involves knowledge representation, specification mining, and automated task planning. For knowledge representation, we use a graph-based spatial temporal logic (GSTL) to capture spatial and temporal information of related skills demonstrated by demo videos. We design a specification mining algorithm to generate a set of parametric GSTL formulas from demo videos by inductively constructing spatial te…

Privacy is an important concern in various multiagent systems in which data collected from the agents are sensitive. We propose a differentially private controller synthesis approach for multi-agent systems subject to high-level specifications expressed in metric temporal logic (MTL). We consider a setting where each agent sends data to a cloud (computing station) through a set of local hubs and the cloud is responsible for computing the control inputs of the agents. Specifically, each agent adds privacy noise (e.g., Gaussian noise) point-wise in time to its own outputs before sharing them wit…
Many safety-critical systems must achieve high-level task specifications with guaranteed safety and correctness. Much recent progress towards this goal has been made through controller synthesis from temporal logic specifications. Existing approaches, however, have been limited to relatively short and simple specifications. Furthermore, existing methods either consider some prior discretization of the state-space, deal only with a convex fragment of temporal logic, or are not provably complete. We propose a scalable, provably complete algorithm that synthesizes continuous trajectories to satis…

There are spatio-temporal rules that dictate how robots should operate in complex environments, e.g., road rules govern how (self-driving) vehicles should behave on the road. However, seamlessly incorporating such rules into a robot control policy remains challenging especially for real-time applications. In this work, given a desired spatio-temporal specification expressed in the Signal Temporal Logic (STL) language, we propose a semi-supervised controller synthesis technique that is attuned to human-like behaviors while satisfying desired STL specifications. Offline, we synthesize a trajecto…
Urban Air Mobility (UAM), or the scenario where multiple manned and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) carry out various tasks over urban airspaces, is a transportation concept of the future that is gaining prominence. UAM missions with complex spatial, temporal and reactive requirements can be succinctly represented using Signal Temporal Logic (STL), a behavioral specification language. However, planning and control of systems with STL specifications is computationally intensive, usually resulting in planning approaches that do not guarantee dynamical feasibility, or control approaches that cann…
