In this paper we introduce a cut-free sequent calculus for the alternation-free fragment of the modal $μ$-calculus. This system allows for cyclic proofs and uses a simple focus mechanism to control the unravelling of fixpoints along infinite branches. We show that the proof system is sound and complete and apply it to prove that the alternation-free fragment has the Craig interpolation property.
We present a sound, complete, and optimal single-pass tableau algorithm for the alternation-free $μ$-calculus. The algorithm supports global caching with intermediate propagation and runs in time $2^{\mathcal{O}(n)}$. In game-theoretic terms, our algorithm integrates the steps for constructing and solving the Büchi game arising from the input tableau into a single procedure; this is done on-the-fly, i.e. may terminate before the game has been fully constructed. This suggests a slogan to the effect that global caching = game solving on-the-fly. A prototypical implementation shows promising init…
It is known that the alternation hierarchy of least and greatest fixpoint operators in the mu-calculus is strict. However, the strictness of the alternation hierarchy does not necessarily carry over when considering restricted classes of structures. A prominent instance is the class of infinite words over which the alternation-free fragment is already as expressive as the full mu-calculus. Our current understanding of when and why the mu-calculus alternation hierarchy is not strict is limited. This paper makes progress in answering these questions by showing that the alternation hierarchy of t…
Satisfiability checking for monotone modal logic is known to be (only) NP-complete. We show that this remains true when the logic is extended with aconjunctive and alternation-free fixpoint operators as well as the universal modality; the resulting logic -- the aconjunctive alternation-free monotone $μ$-calculus with the universal modality -- contains both concurrent propositional dynamic logic (CPDL) and the alternation-free fragment of game logic as fragments. We obtain our result from a characterization of satisfiability by means of Büchi games with polynomially many Eloise nodes.
We study the decidability and expressiveness issues of $μ$-calculus on data words and data $ω$-words. It is shown that the full logic as well as the fragment which uses only the least fixpoints are undecidable, while the fragment containing only greatest fixpoints is decidable. Two subclasses, namely BMA and BR, obtained by limiting the compositions of formulas and their automata characterizations are exhibited. Furthermore, Data-LTL and two-variable first-order logic are expressed as unary alternation-free fragment of BMA. Finally basic inclusions of the fragments are discussed.
A modular proof-theoretic framework was recently developed to prove Craig interpolation for normal modal logics based on generalizations of sequent calculi (e.g., nested sequents, hypersequents, and labelled sequents). In this paper, we turn to uniform interpolation, which is stronger than Craig interpolation. We develop a constructive method for proving uniform interpolation via nested sequents and apply it to reprove the uniform interpolation property for normal modal logics $\mathsf{K}$, $\mathsf{D}$, and $\mathsf{T}$. We then use the know-how developed for nested sequents to apply the same…
