We investigate a hierarchy of semidefinite bounds $\vartheta^{(r)}(G)$ for the stability number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$, based on its copositive programming formulation and introduced by de Klerk and Pasechnik [{\em SIAM J. Optim.} 12 (2002), pp.875--892], who conjectured convergence to $α(G)$ in $r=α(G)-1$ steps. Even the weaker conjecture claiming finite convergence is still open. We establish links between this hierarchy and sum-of-squares hierarchies based on the Motzkin-Straus formulation of $α(G)$, which we use to show finite convergence when $G$ is acritical, i.e., when $α(G\setminus e)=α(G)$ for all edges $e$ of $G$. This relies, in particular, on understanding the structure of the minimizers of the Motzkin-Straus formulation and showing that their number is finite precisely when $G$ is acritical. Moreover we show that these results hold in the general setting of the weighted stable set problem for graphs equipped with positive node weights. In addition, as a byproduct we show that deciding whether a standard quadratic program has finitely many minimizers does not admit a polynomial-time algorithm unless P=NP.
Moment-sum-of-squares hierarchies of semidefinite programs can be used to approximate the volume of a given compact basic semialgebraic set K. The idea consists of approximating from above the indicator function of K with a sequence of polynomials of increasing degree d, so that the integrals of these polynomials generate a convergence sequence of upper bounds on the volume of K. We show that the asymptotic rate of this convergence is at least O(1/ log log d).
We study the convergence rate of moment-sum-of-squares hierarchies of semidefinite programs for optimal control problems with polynomial data. It is known that these hierarchies generate polynomial under-approximations to the value function of the optimal control problem and that these under-approximations converge in the L1 norm to the value function as their degree d tends to infinity. We show that the rate of this convergence is O(1/ log log d). We treat in detail the continuous-time infinite-horizon discounted problem and describe in brief how the same rate can be obtained for the finite-h…
We exhibit a convex polynomial optimization problem for which the diagonally-dominant sum-of-squares (DSOS) and the scaled diagonally-dominant sum-of-squares (SDSOS) hierarchies, based on linear programming and second-order conic programming respectively, do not converge to the global infimum. The same goes for the r-DSOS and r-SDSOS hierarchies. This refutes the claim in the literature according to which the DSOS and SDSOS hierarchies can solve any polynomial optimization problem to arbitrary accuracy. In contrast, the Lasserre hierarchy based on semidefinite programming yields the global inf…
This work derives upper bounds on the convergence rate of the moment-sum-of-squares hierarchy with correlative sparsity for global minimization of polynomials on compact basic semialgebraic sets. The main conclusion is that both sparse hierarchies based on the Schmüdgen and Putinar Positivstellensätze enjoy a polynomial rate of convergence that depends on the size of the largest clique in the sparsity graph but not on the ambient dimension. Interestingly, the sparse bounds outperform the best currently available bounds for the dense hierarchy when the maximum clique size is sufficiently small …
We consider the sum-of-squares hierarchy of approximations for the problem of minimizing a polynomial $f$ over the boolean hypercube $\mathbb{B}^{n}=\{0,1\}^n$. This hierarchy provides for each integer $r \in \mathbb{N}$ a lower bound $f_{(r)}$ on the minimum $f_{\min}$ of $f$, given by the largest scalar $λ$ for which the polynomial $f - λ$ is a sum-of-squares on $\mathbb{B}^{n}$ with degree at most $2r$. We analyze the quality of these bounds by estimating the worst-case error $f_{\min} - f_{(r)}$ in terms of the least roots of the Krawtchouk polynomials. As a consequence, for fixed $t \in […
We compare four key hierarchies for solving Constrained Polynomial Optimization Problems (CPOP): Sum of Squares (SOS), Sum of Diagonally Dominant Polynomials (SDSOS), Sum of Nonnegative Circuits (SONC), and the Sherali Adams (SA) hierarchies. We prove a collection of dependencies among these hierarchies both for general CPOPs and for optimization problems on the Boolean hypercube. Key results include for the general case that the SONC and SOS hierarchy are polynomially incomparable, while SDSOS is contained in SONC. A direct consequence is the non-existence of a Putinar-like Positivstellensatz…
We consider the problem of minimizing a given $n$-variate polynomial $f$ over the hypercube $[-1,1]^n$. An idea introduced by Lasserre, is to find a probability distribution on $[-1,1]^n$ with polynomial density function $h$ (of given degree $r$) that minimizes the expectation $\int_{[-1,1]^n} f(x)h(x)dμ(x)$, where $dμ(x)$ is a fixed, finite Borel measure supported on $[-1,1]^n$. It is known that, for the Lebesgue measure $dμ(x) = dx$, one may show an error bound $O(1/\sqrt{r})$ if $h$ is a sum-of-squares density, and an $O(1/r)$ error bound if $h$ is the density of a beta distribution. In thi…
A central question in optimization is to maximize (or minimize) a linear function over a given polytope P. To solve such a problem in practice one needs a concise description of the polytope P. In this paper we are interested in representations of P using the positive semidefinite cone: a positive semidefinite lift (psd lift) of a polytope P is a representation of P as the projection of an affine slice of the positive semidefinite cone $\mathbf{S}^d_+$. Such a representation allows linear optimization problems over P to be written as semidefinite programs of size d. Such representations can be…
The problem of optimizing over the cone of nonnegative polynomials is a fundamental problem in computational mathematics, with applications to polynomial optimization, control, machine learning, game theory, and combinatorics, among others. A number of breakthrough papers in the early 2000s showed that this problem, long thought to be out of reach, could be tackled by using sum of squares programming. This technique however has proved to be expensive for large-scale problems, as it involves solving large semidefinite programs (SDPs). In the first part of this thesis, we present two methods for…
We propose an iterative algorithm for the numerical computation of sums of squares of polynomials approximating given data at prescribed interpolation points. The method is based on the definition of a convex functional $G$ arising from the dualization of a quadratic regression over the Cholesky factors of the sum of squares decomposition. In order to justify the construction, the domain of $G$, the boundary of the domain and the behavior at infinity are analyzed in details. When the data interpolate a positive univariate polynomial, we show that in the context of the Lukacs sum of squares rep…
We prove decomposition theorems for sparse positive (semi)definite polynomial matrices that can be viewed as sparsity-exploiting versions of the Hilbert--Artin, Reznick, Putinar, and Putinar--Vasilescu Positivstellensätze. First, we establish that a polynomial matrix $P(x)$ with chordal sparsity is positive semidefinite for all $x\in \mathbb{R}^n$ if and only if there exists a sum-of-squares (SOS) polynomial $σ(x)$ such that $σP$ is a sum of sparse SOS matrices. Second, we show that setting $σ(x)=(x_1^2 + \cdots + x_n^2)^ν$ for some integer $ν$ suffices if $P$ is homogeneous and positive defin…
