The void ellipticity distribution today can be well explained by the tidal field. Going a step further from the overall distribution, we investigate individuality on the tidal response of void shape in non-linear dynamical evolution. We perform an N-body simulation and trace individual voids using particle ID. The voids are defined based on Voronoi tessellation and watershed algorithm, using public code VIDE. A positive correlation is found between the time variation of void ellipticity and tidal field around a void if the void maintains its constituent particles. Such voids tend to have smaller mass densities. Conversely, not a few voids significantly deform by particle exchange, rather than the tidal field. Those voids may prevent us from correctly proving a quadrupole field of gravity out of a void shape.
The shapes of cosmic voids are prone to distortions by the external tidal forces since their low-densities imply a lower internal resistance. This susceptibility of the void shapes to the tidal distortions makes them useful as an indicator of the large-scale tidal and density fields, despite the practical difficulty in defining them. Using the void catalog constructed by Pan et al. (2012) from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR7), we detect a clear 4 sigma signal of spatial correlations of the void shapes on the scale of 20 Mpc/h and show that the signal is robus…
Using cosmological $N$-body simulation which coevolves cold dark matter (CDM) and neutrino particles, we discover the local effect of massive neutrinos on the spatial distribution of CDM halos, reflected on properties of the Delaunay Triangulation (DT) voids. Smaller voids are generally in regions with higher neutrino abundance and so their surrounding halos are impacted by a stronger neutrino free streaming. This makes the voids larger (surrounding halos being washed outward the void center). On the contrary, larger voids are generally in regions with lower neutrino abundance and so their sur…
Inspired on the well known dynamical dichotomy predicted in voids, where some underdense regions expand whereas others collapse due to overdense surrounding regions, we explored the interplay between the void inner dynamics and its large scale environment. The environment is classified depending on its density as in previous works. We analyse the dynamical properties of void-centered spherical shells at different void-centric distances depending on this classification. The above dynamical properties are given by the angular distribution of the radial velocity field, its smoothness, the field d…
We study the prospects for measuring the dark matter distribution of voids with stacked weak lensing. We select voids from a large set of $N$-body simulations, and explore their lensing signals with the full ray-tracing simulations including the effect of the large-scale structure along the line-of-sight. The lensing signals are compared with simple void model predictions to infer the three-dimensional mass distribution of voids. We show that the stacked weak lensing signals are detected at significant level (S/N$\geq5$) for a 5000 degree$^2$ survey area, for a wide range of void radii up to $…
We investigate the large scale matter distribution adopting QSOs as matter tracer. The quasar catalogue based on the SDSS DR7 is used. The void finding algorithm is presented and statistical properties of void sizes and shapes are determined. Number of large voids in the quasar distribution is greater than the number of the same size voids found in the random distribution. The largest voids with diameters exceeding 300 Mpc indicate an existence of comparable size areas of lower than the average matter density. No void-void space correlations have been detected, and no larger scale deviations f…
We perform a statistical study focused on void environments. We examine galaxy density profiles around voids in the SDSS, finding a correlation between void--centric distance to the shell of maximum density and void radius when a maximum in overdensity exists. We analyze voids with and without a surrounding over-dense shell in the SDSS. We find that small voids are more frequently surrounded by over-dense shells whereas the radial galaxy density profile of large voids tends to rise smoothly towards the mean galaxy density. We analyse the fraction of voids surrounded by overdense shells finding…
We present a novel parameter-free cosmological void finder (\textsc{dive}, Delaunay TrIangulation Void findEr) based on Delaunay Triangulation (DT), which efficiently computes the empty spheres constrained by a discrete set of tracers. We define the spheres as DT voids, and describe their properties, including an universal density profile together with an intrinsic scatter. We apply this technique on 100 halo catalogues with volumes of 2.5\,$h^{-1}$Gpc side each, with a bias and number density similar to the BOSS CMASS Luminous Red Galaxies, performed with the \textsc{patchy} code. Our results…
Using the redshift-space distortions of void-galaxy cross-correlation function we analyse the dynamics of voids embedded in different environments. We compute the void-galaxy cross-correlation function in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in terms of distances taken along the line of sight and projected into the sky. We analyse the distortions on the cross-correlation isodensity levels and we find anisotropic isocontours consistent with expansion for large voids with smoothly rising density profiles and collapse for small voids with overdense shells surrounding them. Based on the linear appr…
In this work we investigate the environmental dependence of the intrinsic ellipticity correlations in cosmic shear surveys. We use the quadratic and linear alignment model to describe the contributions by spiral and elliptical galaxies, respectively. The density field is in both cases described by a Gaussian random field and ellipticity correlation functions that are conditional on the environment of the galaxies are constructed by sampling random values for the tidal tensor and inertial tensor. The covariance of the Gaussian random process from which the tensor entries are drawn is decomposed…
[abridge]Cosmic velocity and tidal fields are important for the understanding of the cosmic web and the environments of galaxies, and can also be used to constrain cosmology. In this paper, we reconstruct these two fields in SDSS volume from dark matter halos represented by galaxy groups. Detailed mock catalogues are used to test the reliability of our method against uncertainties arising from redshift distortions, survey boundaries, and false identifications of groups by our group finder. We find that both the velocity and tidal fields, smoothed on a scale of ~2Mpc/h, can be reliably reconstr…
Cosmic voids provide a unique environment to study galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper, we analyse a set of hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations of voids, to analyse in detail their inner structures. These voids were identified in a cosmological simulation and classified according to their surrounding dynamics at very large scales: whether they are in expansion or contraction at their outskirts. We study how these environments and the dynamics of voids impact the baryonic processes inside haloes and their mechanisms of formation and evolution. We find an under-abundance of processed gas …
In this study, we obtain the size distribution of voids as a 3-parameter redshift independent log-normal void probability function (VPF) directly from the Cosmic Void Catalog (CVC). Although many statistical models of void distributions are based on the counts in randomly placed cells, the log-normal VPF that we here obtain is independent of the shape of the voids due to the parameter-free void finder of the CVC. We use three void populations drawn from the CVC generated by the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) Mocks which are tuned to three mock SDSS samples to investigate the void distribut…
A numerical evidence for the dependence of the substructure abundance of cluster halos on the orientation coherence of the surrounding tidal fields is presented. Applying the adapted minimal spanning tree (MST) algorithm to the cluster halos with $M\ge 10^{14}\,h^{-1}\,M_{\odot}$ from the Big MultiDark-Planck Simulations, we identify primary MST stems composed of multiple nodes as the filaments and measure their specific sizes (spatial extents per node), which quantify the orientation coherence of the tidal field on the cluster scales. Classifying the cluster halos into five samples by the spe…
We examine the fully relativistic evolution of cosmic voids constituted by baryons and cold dark matter (CDM), represented by two non-comoving dust sources in a $Λ$CDM background. For this purpose, we consider numerical solutions of Einstein's field equations in a fluid-flow representation adapted to spherical symmetry and multiple components. We present a simple example that explores the frame-dependence of the local expansion and the Hubble flow for this mixture of two dusts, revealing that the relative velocity between the sources yields a significantly different evolution in comparison wit…
The intrinsic alignment of galaxy shapes (by means of their angular momentum) and their cross-correlation with the surrounding dark matter tidal field are investigated using the 160 000, z=1.2 synthetic galaxies extracted from the high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN. One- and two-point statistics of the spin of the stellar component are measured as a function of mass and colour. For the low-mass galaxies, this spin is locally aligned with the tidal field `filamentary' direction while, for the high-mass galaxies, it is perpendicular to both filaments and walls. Th…
The initial shear field, characterized by a primordial perturbation potential, plays a crucial role in the formation of large scale structures. Hence, considerable analytic work has been based on the joint distribution of its eigenvalues, associated with Gaussian statistics. In addition, directly related morphological quantities such as ellipticity or prolateness are essential tools in understanding the formation and structural properties of halos, voids, sheets and filaments, their relation with the local environment, and the geometrical and dynamical classification of the cosmic web. To date…
This paper presents an alternative scenario to explain the observed properties of the Milky Way dwarf Spheroidals (MW dSphs). We show that instead of resulting from large amounts of dark matter (DM), the large velocity dispersions observed along their lines of sight can be entirely accounted for by dynamical heating of DM-free systems resulting from MW tidal shocks. Such a regime is expected if the progenitors of the MW dwarfs are infalling gas-dominated galaxies. In this case, gas lost through ram-pressure leads to a strong decrease of self-gravity, a phase during which stars can radially exp…
