Chiral induced spin selectivity is a phenomenon that has been attributed to chirality, spin-orbit interactions, and non-equilibrium conditions, while the role of electron exchange and correlations have been investigated only marginally until very recently. However, as recent experiments show that chiral molecules acquire a finite spin-polarization merely by being in contact with a metallic surface, these results suggest that electron correlations play a more crucial role for the emergence of the phenomenon than previously thought. Here, it is demonstrated that molecular vibrations give rise to molecular charge redistribution and accompanied spin-polarization when coupling a chiral molecule to a non-magnetic metal. It is, moreover, shown that enantiomer separation, due to spin-polarization intimately related to the chirality, can be understood in terms of the proposed model.
We investigate novel transport phenomena in a chiral fluid originated from an interplay between a vorticity and strong magnetic field, which induces a redistribution of vector charges in the system and an axial current along the magnetic field. The corresponding transport coefficients are obtained from an energy-shift argument for the chiral fermions in the lowest Landau level (LLL) due to a spin-vorticity coupling and also from diagrammatic computations on the basis of the linear response theory. Based on consistent results from the both methods, we observe that the transport coefficients are…
The functionality of many biological systems depends on reliable electron transfer with minimal heating. Unlike man-made electric circuits, nature realizes electron transport via insulating chiral molecules. Here we include spin into the analysis of tunneling through these molecules, and demonstrate its importance for efficient transport. We show that the helical geometry induces robust spin filtering accompanied by, and intimately related to, strongly enhanced transmission. Thus, we resolve two key questions posed by transport measurements through organic molecules, demonstrating their common…
In plasmonic chirality, the phenomenon of circular dichroism for achiral nanoparitcles caused by Coulomb interaction between metal nanoparticles (NPs) and chiral molecules have been studied. At the same time, under the resonance condition, the dye molecules and metal NPs will produce huge Rabi splitting due to strong coupling. If the chiral molecules are at the resonance of the plasmon, what will happen for the strong interaction between the plasmon and molecules with chirality introduced? In this paper, we investigate a spherical core-shell model and analyze its spectral phenomena under the e…
We report chirality-induced current-in-plane magnetoresistance (CIP-MR) in chiral molecule/ferromagnetic metal bilayer at room temperature. The previously reported chiralityinduced current-perpendicular-to-plane magnetoresistance (CPP-MR) originates from the chiral induced spin-selectivity (CISS) effect that needs charge-current passing through the molecule. In contrast, the observed CIP-MR in the present study requires no bias charge current through the molecule. The temperature dependence of CIP-MR suggests thermally induced spin-polarization in the chiral molecules is the key for the observ…
Chirality in organic molecules has attracted considerable attention in the fields of chemistry, biology, and spintronics. This paper reports on perpendicular magnetization hysteresis loops of a multilayer consisting of ultrathin Fe (001), chiral phthalocyanine molecule ((P)- or (M)-PbPc-DTBPh), and MgO (001). We find a chirality-dependent shift of the hysteresis loop. Unlike the previously reported bias current induced phenomena, the result shows a chirality-induced effective magnetic field in the phthalocyanine molecule in the absence of a bias current in the system. This study opens up a new…
We demonstrate the self-assembly of C$_{60}$ and pentacene (Pn) molecules into acceptor-donor heterostructures which are well-ordered and -- despite the high degree of symmetry of the constituent molecules -- {\it chiral}. Pn was deposited on Cu(111) to monolayer coverage, producing the random-tiling ($R$) phase as previously described. Atop $R$-phase Pn, post-deposited C$_{60}$ molecules cause rearrangement of the Pn molecules into domains based on chiral supramolecular `pinwheels'. These two molecules are the highest-symmetry achiral molecules so far observed to coalesce into chiral heterost…
Here we emphasize once more the distinction between generating CISS (spin-charge current conversion) in a chiral system and detecting it as magnetoresistance in two-terminal electronic devices. We also highlight important differences between electrical measurement results obtained in the linear response regime and those obtained in the nonlinear regime.
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we predict an effect of chirality on the conduction of benzene molecules along the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) subjected to a thermal gradient. The group drift velocity of the molecules is found to be maximal in the case of an armchair CNT, and to decrease with decreasing chiral angle. This chirality effect on thermodiffusion is induced by a variation in the optimized paths of molecules that change with different electronic overlap at the interface. The mechanism for the thermophoretic transport is identified to be coupled with a gradient of adsorba…
The radiation of optically active (chiral) molecule placed near chiral nanoparticle is investigated. The optimal conditions for engineering of radiation of optically active (chiral) molecules with the help of chiral nanoparticles are derived. It is shown that for this purpose, the substance of the chiral particle must have both ε_and μ_negative (double negative material (DNG)) or negative μ_and positive ε_(μ_negative material (MNG)). Our results pave the way to an effective engineering of radiation of "left" and "right" molecules and to creating pure optical devices for separation of drugs ena…
The chiral state of a molecule plays a crucial role in molecular recognition and biochemical reactions. Because of this and owing to the fact that most modern drugs are chiral, the sensitive and reliable detection of the chirality of molecules is of great interest to drug development. The majority of naturally occurring biomolecules exhibit circular dichroism (CD) in the UV-range. Theoretical studies and several experiments have demonstrated that this UV-CD can be transferred into the plasmonic frequency domain when metal surfaces and chiral biomolecules are in close proximity. Here, we demons…

Dispersion interactions are one of the components of van der Waals (vdW) forces, which play a key role in the understanding of intermolecular interactions in many physical, chemical and biological processes. The theory of dispersion forces was developed by London in the early years of quantum mechanics. However, it was only in the 1960s that it was recognized that for molecules lacking an inversion center such as chiral and helical molecules, there are chirality-sensitive corrections to the dispersion forces proportional to the rotatory power known from the theory of circular dichroism and wit…
We analyse the appearance of a mechanical torque that acts on a chiral molecule: a single-stranded DNA, in which the spin-orbit interaction is expected to induce a spin-selectivity effect. The mechanical torque is shown to appear as a result of the non-conservation of the spin current in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction. Adopting a simple microscopic model Hamiltonian for a chiral molecule connected to source and drain leads, and accounting for the mechanical torque acting on the chiral molecule as the back action on the electrons traversing the molecule, we derive the spin continuit…
Plasmonic nanocrystals with hot spots are able to localize optical energy in small spaces. In such physical systems, near-field interactions between molecules and plasmons can become especially strong. This paper considers the case of a nanoparticle dimer and a chiral biomolecule. In our model, a chiral molecule is placed in the gap between two plasmonic nanoparticles, where the electromagnetic hot spot occurs. Since many important biomolecules have optical transitions in the UV, we consider the case of Aluminum nanoparticles, as they offer strong electromagnetic enhancements in the blue and U…
Chiral superconductors, a unique class of unconventional superconductors in which the complex superconducting order parameter winds clockwise or counter-clockwise in the momentum space, represent a topologically non-trivial system with direct implications for topological quantum computing. Intrinsic chiral superconductors are extremely rare, with only a few arguable examples including heavy fermion metals (UTe$_2$, UPt$_3$) and perovskite superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Chiral molecules with neither mirror nor inversion symmetry have been widely investigated, in which the spin degeneracy may be …
Various device-based experiments have indicated that electron transfer in certain chiral molecules may be spin-dependent, a phenomenon known as the Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) effect. However, due to the complexity of these devices and a lack of theoretical understanding, it is not always clear to what extent the chiral character of the molecules actually contributes to the magnetic-field-dependent signals in these experiments. To address this issue, we report here an electron transmission model that evaluates the role of the CISS effect in two-terminal and multi-terminal linear-reg…
Recent research discovered that charge transfer processes in chiral molecules can be spin selective and named the effect chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS). Follow-up work studied hybrid spintronic devices with conventional electronic materials and chiral (bio)molecules. However, a theoretical foundation for the CISS effect is still in development and the spintronic signals were not evaluated quantitatively. We present a circuit-model approach that can provide quantitative evaluations. Our analysis assumes the scheme of a recent experiment that used photosystem~I (PSI) as spin injectors, f…
Charge and spin dynamics is addressed in chiral molecules immediately after the instantaneous coupling to an external metallic reservoir. It is shown how a spin-polarization is induced in the chiral structure as a response to the charge dynamics. The dynamics indicate that chiral induced spin selectivity is an excited states phenomenon which, in the transient regime partly can be captured using a simplistic single particle description, however, in the stationary limit definitively shows that electron correlations, e.g., electron-vibration interactions, crucially contribute to sustain an intrin…
The physical origin of the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect has puzzled experimental and theoretical researchers over the past few years. Early experiments were interpreted in terms of unconventional spin-orbit interactions mediated by the helical geometry. However, more recent experimental studies have clearly revealed that electronic exchange interactions also play a key role in the magnetic response of chiral molecules in singlet states. In this investigation, we use spin-polarized closed shell density functional theory calculations to address the influence of exch…

A chiral near field with a highly contorted electromagnetic field builds a bridge to match the chiral molecules and light wavelengths with large size differences. It significantly enhances the circular dichroism of chiral molecules and has great prospects in chirality sensing, detection, trapping, and other chirality-related applications. Surface plasmons feature outstanding light-trapping and electromagnetic-field-concentrating abilities. Plasmonic chiral nanostructures facilitate light manipulation to generate superchiral near fields. Meanwhile, the nanophotonic structures have attracted sig…
