Acronym disambiguation (AD) task aims to find the correct expansions of an ambiguous ancronym in a given sentence. Although it is convenient to use acronyms, sometimes they could be difficult to understand. Identifying the appropriate expansions of an acronym is a practical task in natural language processing. Since few works have been done for AD in scientific field, we propose a binary classification model incorporating BERT and several training strategies including dynamic negative sample selection, task adaptive pretraining, adversarial training and pseudo labeling in this paper. Experiments on SciAD show the effectiveness of our proposed model and our score ranks 1st in SDU@AAAI-21 shared task 2: Acronym Disambiguation.

Acronym Disambiguation (AD) is crucial for natural language understanding on various sources, including biomedical reports, scientific papers, and search engine queries. However, existing acronym disambiguation benchmarks and tools are limited to specific domains, and the size of prior benchmarks is rather small. To accelerate the research on acronym disambiguation, we construct a new benchmark named GLADIS with three components: (1) a much larger acronym dictionary with 1.5M acronyms and 6.4M long forms; (2) a pre-training corpus with 160 million sentences; (3) three datasets that cover the g…

Acronyms are omnipresent. They usually express information that is repetitive and well known. But acronyms can also be ambiguous because there can be multiple expansions for the same acronym. In this paper, we propose a general system for acronym disambiguation that can work on any acronym given some context information. We present methods for retrieving all the possible expansions of an acronym from Wikipedia and AcronymsFinder.com. We propose to use these expansions to collect all possible contexts in which these acronyms are used and then score them using a paragraph embedding technique cal…

Acronyms are the short forms of longer phrases and they are frequently used in writing, especially scholarly writing, to save space and facilitate the communication of information. As such, every text understanding tool should be capable of recognizing acronyms in text (i.e., acronym identification) and also finding their correct meaning (i.e., acronym disambiguation). As most of the prior works on these tasks are restricted to the biomedical domain and use unsupervised methods or models trained on limited datasets, they fail to perform well for scientific document understanding. To push forwa…

Acronyms and abbreviations are the short-form of longer phrases and they are ubiquitously employed in various types of writing. Despite their usefulness to save space in writing and reader's time in reading, they also provide challenges for understanding the text especially if the acronym is not defined in the text or if it is used far from its definition in long texts. To alleviate this issue, there are considerable efforts both from the research community and software developers to build systems for identifying acronyms and finding their correct meanings in the text. However, none of the exi…

Acronyms are the short forms of phrases that facilitate conveying lengthy sentences in documents and serve as one of the mainstays of writing. Due to their importance, identifying acronyms and corresponding phrases (i.e., acronym identification (AI)) and finding the correct meaning of each acronym (i.e., acronym disambiguation (AD)) are crucial for text understanding. Despite the recent progress on this task, there are some limitations in the existing datasets which hinder further improvement. More specifically, limited size of manually annotated AI datasets or noises in the automatically crea…

Acronym disambiguation means finding the correct meaning of an ambiguous acronym from the dictionary in a given sentence, which is one of the key points for scientific document understanding (SDU@AAAI-22). Recently, many attempts have tried to solve this problem via fine-tuning the pre-trained masked language models (MLMs) in order to obtain a better acronym representation. However, the acronym meaning is varied under different contexts, whose corresponding phrase representation mapped in different directions lacks discrimination in the entire vector space. Thus, the original representations o…
The prevalence of ambiguous acronyms make scientific documents harder to understand for humans and machines alike, presenting a need for models that can automatically identify acronyms in text and disambiguate their meaning. We introduce new methods for acronym identification and disambiguation: our acronym identification model projects learned token embeddings onto tag predictions, and our acronym disambiguation model finds training examples with similar sentence embeddings as test examples. Both of our systems achieve significant performance gains over previously suggested methods, and perfo…

Scientific documents often contain a large number of acronyms. Disambiguation of these acronyms will help researchers better understand the meaning of vocabulary in the documents. In the past, thanks to large amounts of data from English literature, acronym task was mainly applied in English literature. However, for other low-resource languages, this task is difficult to obtain good performance and receives less attention due to the lack of large amount of annotation data. To address the above issue, this paper proposes an new method for acronym disambiguation, named as ADBCMM, which can signi…
Acronym identification focuses on finding the acronyms and the phrases that have been abbreviated, which is crucial for scientific document understanding tasks. However, the limited size of manually annotated datasets hinders further improvement for the problem. Recent breakthroughs of language models pre-trained on large corpora clearly show that unsupervised pre-training can vastly improve the performance of downstream tasks. In this paper, we present an Adversarial Training BERT method named AT-BERT, our winning solution to acronym identification task for Scientific Document Understanding (…

We present our systems submitted for the shared tasks of Acronym Identification (AI) and Acronym Disambiguation (AD) held under Workshop on SDU. We mainly experiment with BERT and SciBERT. In addition, we assess the effectiveness of "BIOless" tagging and blending along with the prowess of ensembling in AI. For AD, we formulate the problem as a span prediction task, experiment with different training techniques and also leverage the use of external data. Our systems rank 11th and 3rd in AI and AD tasks respectively.
Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD), which aims to identify the correct sense of a given polyseme, is a long-standing problem in NLP. In this paper, we propose to use BERT to extract better polyseme representations for WSD and explore several ways of combining BERT and the classifier. We also utilize sense definitions to train a unified classifier for all words, which enables the model to disambiguate unseen polysemes. Experiments show that our model achieves the state-of-the-art results on the standard English All-word WSD evaluation.
Prepositions are frequently occurring polysemous words. Disambiguation of prepositions is crucial in tasks like semantic role labelling, question answering, text entailment, and noun compound paraphrasing. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for preposition sense disambiguation (PSD), which does not use any linguistic tools. In a supervised setting, the machine learning model is presented with sentences wherein prepositions have been annotated with senses. These senses are IDs in what is called The Preposition Project (TPP). We use the hidden layer representations from pre-trained BE…
Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) aims to find the exact sense of an ambiguous word in a particular context. Traditional supervised methods rarely take into consideration the lexical resources like WordNet, which are widely utilized in knowledge-based methods. Recent studies have shown the effectiveness of incorporating gloss (sense definition) into neural networks for WSD. However, compared with traditional word expert supervised methods, they have not achieved much improvement. In this paper, we focus on how to better leverage gloss knowledge in a supervised neural WSD system. We construct con…

Contextualized word embeddings (CWE) such as provided by ELMo (Peters et al., 2018), Flair NLP (Akbik et al., 2018), or BERT (Devlin et al., 2019) are a major recent innovation in NLP. CWEs provide semantic vector representations of words depending on their respective context. Their advantage over static word embeddings has been shown for a number of tasks, such as text classification, sequence tagging, or machine translation. Since vectors of the same word type can vary depending on the respective context, they implicitly provide a model for word sense disambiguation (WSD). We introduce a sim…
This paper compares BERT-SQuAD and Ab3P on the Abbreviation Definition Identification (ADI) task. ADI inputs a text and outputs short forms (abbreviations/acronyms) and long forms (expansions). BERT with reranking improves over BERT without reranking but fails to reach the Ab3P rule-based baseline. What is BERT missing? Reranking introduces two new features: charmatch and freq. The first feature identifies opportunities to take advantage of character constraints in acronyms and the second feature identifies opportunities to take advantage of frequency constraints across documents.
We propose a global entity disambiguation (ED) model based on BERT. To capture global contextual information for ED, our model treats not only words but also entities as input tokens, and solves the task by sequentially resolving mentions to their referent entities and using resolved entities as inputs at each step. We train the model using a large entity-annotated corpus obtained from Wikipedia. We achieve new state-of-the-art results on five standard ED datasets: AIDA-CoNLL, MSNBC, AQUAINT, ACE2004, and WNED-WIKI. The source code and model checkpoint are available at https://github.com/studi…
Domain adaptation or transfer learning using pre-trained language models such as BERT has proven to be an effective approach for many natural language processing tasks. In this work, we propose to formulate word sense disambiguation as a relevance ranking task, and fine-tune BERT on sequence-pair ranking task to select the most probable sense definition given a context sentence and a list of candidate sense definitions. We also introduce a data augmentation technique for WSD using existing example sentences from WordNet. Using the proposed training objective and data augmentation technique, ou…
Cross-lingual word sense disambiguation (WSD) tackles the challenge of disambiguating ambiguous words across languages given context. The pre-trained BERT embedding model has been proven to be effective in extracting contextual information of words, and have been incorporated as features into many state-of-the-art WSD systems. In order to investigate how syntactic information can be added into the BERT embeddings to result in both semantics- and syntax-incorporated word embeddings, this project proposes the concatenated embeddings by producing dependency parse tress and encoding the relative r…
Grapheme-to-phoneme (G2P) conversion is an indispensable part of the Chinese Mandarin text-to-speech (TTS) system, and the core of G2P conversion is to solve the problem of polyphone disambiguation, which is to pick up the correct pronunciation for several candidates for a Chinese polyphonic character. In this paper, we propose a Chinese polyphone BERT model to predict the pronunciations of Chinese polyphonic characters. Firstly, we create 741 new Chinese monophonic characters from 354 source Chinese polyphonic characters by pronunciation. Then we get a Chinese polyphone BERT by extending a pr…

Transformer-based language models have taken many fields in NLP by storm. BERT and its derivatives dominate most of the existing evaluation benchmarks, including those for Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD), thanks to their ability in capturing context-sensitive semantic nuances. However, there is still little knowledge about their capabilities and potential limitations in encoding and recovering word senses. In this article, we provide an in-depth quantitative and qualitative analysis of the celebrated BERT model with respect to lexical ambiguity. One of the main conclusions of our analysis is t…

We present two supervised (pre-)training methods to incorporate gloss definitions from lexical resources into neural language models (LMs). The training improves our models' performance for Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) but also benefits general language understanding tasks while adding almost no parameters. We evaluate our techniques with seven different neural LMs and find that XLNet is more suitable for WSD than BERT. Our best-performing methods exceeds state-of-the-art WSD techniques on the SemCor 3.0 dataset by 0.5% F1 and increase BERT's performance on the GLUE benchmark by 1.1% on ave…

Polyphone disambiguation is the most crucial task in Mandarin grapheme-to-phoneme (g2p) conversion. Previous studies have approached this problem using pre-trained language models, restricted output, and extra information from Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging. Inspired by these strategies, we propose a novel approach, called g2pW, which adapts learnable softmax-weights to condition the outputs of BERT with the polyphonic character of interest and its POS tagging. Rather than using the hard mask as in previous works, our experiments show that learning a soft-weighting function for the candidate pho…
Aspect level sentiment classification (ALSC) is a difficult problem with state-of-the-art models showing less than 80% macro-F1 score on benchmark datasets. Existing models do not incorporate information on aspect-aspect relations in knowledge graphs (KGs), e.g. DBpedia. Two main challenges stem from inaccurate disambiguation of aspects to KG entities, and the inability to learn aspect representations from the large KGs in joint training with ALSC models. We propose AR-BERT, a novel two-level global-local entity embedding scheme that allows efficient joint training of KG-based aspect embedding…

Semantic parsing is the task of transforming sentences from natural language into formal representations of predicate-argument structures. Under this research area, frame-semantic parsing has attracted much interest. This parsing approach leverages the lexical information defined in FrameNet to associate marked predicates or targets with semantic frames, thereby assigning semantic roles to sentence components based on pre-specified frame elements in FrameNet. In this paper, a deep neural network architecture known as Positional Attention-based Frame Identification with BERT (PAFIBERT) is prese…

We propose new, data-efficient training tasks for BERT models that improve performance of automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems on conversational speech. We include past conversational context and fine-tune BERT on transcript disambiguation without external data to rescore ASR candidates. Our results show word error rate recoveries up to 37.2%. We test our methods in low-resource data domains, both in language (Norwegian), tone (spontaneous, conversational), and topics (parliament proceedings and customer service phone calls). Using prompts to utilize language models to perform various downstream tasks, also known as prompt-based learning or prompt-learning, has lately gained significant success in comparison to the pre-train and fine-tune paradigm. Nonetheless, virtually all prompt-based methods are token-level, meaning they all utilize GPT's left-to-right language model or BERT's masked language model to perform cloze-style tasks. In this paper, we attempt to accomplish several NLP tasks in the zero-shot scenario using a BERT original pre-training task abandoned by RoBERTa and other models--Next Sentence Predictio…
