We study fundamental rogue-wave solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the limit that the order of the rogue wave is large and the independent variables $(x,t)$ are proportional to the order (the far-field limit). We first formulate a Riemann-Hilbert representation of these solutions that allows the order to vary continuously rather than by integer increments. The intermediate solutions in this continuous family include also soliton solutions for zero boundary conditions spectrally encoded by a single complex-conjugate pair of poles of arbitrary order, as well as other solutions having nonzero boundary conditions matching those of the rogue waves albeit with far slower decay as $x\to\pm\infty$. The large-order far-field asymptotic behavior of the solution depends on which of three disjoint regions $\mathcal{C}$, $\mathcal{S}$, and $\mathcal{E}$ contains the rescaled variables. On the regions $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{S}$ we show that the asymptotic behavior is the same for all continuous orders, while in the region $\mathcal{E}$ the discrete sequence of rogue-wave orders produces distinctive asymptotic behavior that is different from other cases.
We study the fundamental rogue wave solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the limit of large order. Using a recently-proposed Riemann-Hilbert representation of the rogue wave solution of arbitrary order $k$, we establish the existence of a limiting profile of the rogue wave in the large-$k$ limit when the solution is viewed in appropriate rescaled variables capturing the near-field region where the solution has the largest amplitude. The limiting profile is a new particular solution of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the rescaled variables --- the rogue wav…
We study rogue wave excitation dynamics on a double-plane wave background through deriving rogue wave solution on the background. The results indicate that rogue wave still can be excited successfully from resonant perturbations with the two plane wave backgrounds. The obtained vector rogue wave can be decomposed to two rogue waves located on the two backgrounds separately. This enables us to investigate the superpositions of two of the three well-known fundamental rogue wave patterns, mainly including eye-shaped, anti-eye-shaped, and four-petaled one. The explicit conditions for different pos…
The long wave-short wave model describes the interaction between the long wave and the short wave. Exact higher-order rational solution expressed by determinants is calculated via the Hirota's bilinear method and the KP hierarchy reduction. It is found that the fundamental rogue wave for the short wave can be classified into three different patterns: bright, intermediate and dark ones, whereas the rogue wave for the long wave is always bright type. The higher-order rogue waves correspond to the superposition of fundamental rogue waves. The modulation instability analysis show that the conditio…
We derive the rogue wave solution of the classical massive Thirring model, that describes nonlinear optical pulse propagation in Bragg gratings. Combining electromagnetically induced transparency with Bragg scattering four-wave mixing, may lead to extreme waves at extremely low powers.
We study on dynamics of high-order rogue wave in two-component coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Based on the generalized Darboux transformation and formal series method, we obtain the high-order rogue wave solution without the special limitation on the wave vectors. As an application, we exhibit the first, second-order rogue wave solution and the superposition of them by computer plotting. We find the distribution patterns for vector rogue waves are much more abundant than the ones for scalar rogue waves, and also different from the ones obtained with the constrain conditions on backgr…
General high-order rogue waves of the NLS-Boussinesq equation are obtained by the KP-hierarchy reduction theory. These rogue waves are expressed with the determinants, whose entries are all algebraic forms. It is found that the fundamental rogue waves can be classified three patterns: four-petals state, dark state, bright state by choosing different parameter $α$ values. As the evolution of the parameter $α$. An interesting phenomena is discovered: the rogue wave changes from four-petals state to dark state, whereafter to the bright state, which are consistent with the change of the correspond…
General high-order rogue wave solutions for the (1+1)-dimensional Yajima-Oikawa (YO) system are derived by using Hirota's bilinear method and the KP-hierarchy reduction technique. These rogue wave solutions are presented in terms of determinants in which the elements are algebraic expressions. The dynamics of first and higher-order rogue wave are investigated in details for different values of the free parameters. It is shown that the fundamental (first-order) rogue waves can be classified into three different patterns: bright, intermediate and dark ones. The high-order rogue waves correspond …
In this paper the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations which describe the propagation of two optical pulses in an optical medium with coherent three-level atoms are studied by Darboux transformation. The general nth-order rogue wave solution involving two different choices of multiple roots for the spectral characteristic equation and the multiparametric nth-order semirational solution are both obtained in terms of Schur polynomials. The explicit rogue wave solutions and semirational solutions from first to second order are provided. In contrast to the known Peregrine soliton, dark and four-petaled…
A rogue wave formation mechanism is proposed within the framework of a coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS) system corresponding to the interaction of two waves propagating in oblique directions in deep water. A rogue condition is introduced that links the angle of interaction with the group velocities of these waves: different angles of interaction can result in a major enhancement of rogue events in both numbers and amplitude. For a range of interacting directions it is found that the CNLS system exhibits significantly more extreme wave amplitude events than its scalar counterpart. Furthermo…
We study localized nonlinear waves on a plane wave background in the multiple self-induced transparency (SIT) system, which describes an important enhancement of the amplification and control of optical waves compared to the single SIT system. A hierarchy of exact multiparametric rational solutions in a compact determinant representation are presented. We demonstrate that, this family of solutions contains known rogue wave solution and unusual W-shaped soliton solution, which strictly corresponds to the linear stability analysis that involves modulation instability and stability regimes in the…
We report and discuss analytical solutions of the vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describe rogue waves in the defocusing regime. This family of solutions includes bright-dark and dark-dark rogue waves. The link between modulational instability (MI) and rogue waves is displayed by showing that only a peculiar kind of MI, namely baseband MI, can sustain rogue wave formation. The existence of vector rogue waves in the defocusing regime is expected to be a crucial progress in explaining extreme waves in a variety of physical scenarios described by multi-component systems, from oceanogra…
In this paper, general rogue wave solutions in the massive Thirring (MT) model are derived by using the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy reduction method and these rational solutions are presented explicitly in terms of determinants whose matrix elements are elementary Schur polynomials. In the reduction process, three reduction conditions including one index- and two dimension-ones are proved to be consistent by only one constraint relation on parameters of tau-functions of the KP-Toda hierarchy. It is found that the rogue wave solutions in the MT model depend on two background parameters…
We mainly investigate a coupled system of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the Maxwell-Bloch equations which describes the wave propagation in an erbium-doped nonlinear fiber with higher-order effects including the forth-order dispersion and quintic non-Kerr nonlinearity. We derive the one-fold Darbox transformation of this system and construct the determinant representation of the $n$-fold Darboux transformation. Then the determinant representation of the $n$th new solutions $(E^{[n]},\, p^{[n]},\, η^{[n]})$ which were generated from the known seed solutions $(E, \, p, \, η)…
The extreme events are investigated for an $n$-component nonlinear Schrödinger ($n$-NLS) system in the focusing Kerr-like nonlinear media, which appears in many physical fields. We report and discuss the novel multi-parametric families of vector rational rogue wave (RW) solutions featuring the parity-time (PT) symmetry, which are characterized by non-identical boundary conditions for the components, and consistent with the degeneracy of $n$ branches of Benjamin-Feir instability. Explicit examples of PT-symmetric vector RWs are presented. Some parameter constraints can make some components gene…
General higher-order breather and rogue wave (RW) solutions to the two-component long wave--short wave resonance interaction (2-LSRI) model are derived via the bilinear Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy reduction method and are given in terms of determinants. Under particular parametric conditions, the breather solutions can reduce to homoclinic orbits, or a mixture of breathers and homoclinic orbits. There are three families of RW solutions, which correspond to a simple root, two simple roots, and a double root of an algebraic equation related to the dimension reduction procedure. The first fa…
We examine statistics of waves for the problem of modulation instability development in the framework of discrete integrable Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) system. Modulation instability depends on one free parameter h that has the meaning of the coupling between the nodes on the lattice. For strong coupling h<<1 the probability density functions (PDFs) for waves amplitudes coincide with that for the continuous classical Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation; the PDFs for both systems are very close to Rayleigh ones. When the coupling is weak h~1, there appear highly localized waves with very large amplit…
We study symmetric and asymmetric optical multi-peak solitons on a continuous wave background in the femtosecond regime of a single-mode fiber. Key characteristics of such multi-peak solitons, as the formation mechanism, propagation stability, and shape-changing collisions, are revealed in detail. Our results show that this multi-peak (symmetric or asymmetric) mode could be regarded as a single pulse formed by a nonlinear superposition of a periodic wave and a single-peak (W-shaped or antidark) soliton. In particular, a phase diagram for different types of nonlinear excitations on a continuous…
