Music Genres, as a popular meta-data of music, are very useful to organize, explore or search music datasets. Soft music genres are weighted multiple-genre annotations to songs. In this initial work, we propose horizontally stacked bar charts to represent a music dataset annotated by these soft music genres. For this purpose, we take an example of a toy dataset consisting of songs labelled with help of three music genres; Blues, Jazz and Country. We demonstrate how such a stacked bar chart can be used as a slider for user-input in an interface. We implement this by embedding this genre bar in a streaming application prototype and show its utility in choosing playlists. We finally conclude by proposing further work and future explorations on our proposed preliminary research.
Musicologists use various labels to classify similar music styles under a shared title. But, non-specialists may categorize music differently. That could be through finding patterns in harmony, instruments, and form of the music. People usually identify a music genre solely by listening, but now computers and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can automate this process. The work on applying AI in the classification of types of music has been growing recently, but there is no evidence of such research on the Kurdish music genres. In this research, we developed a dataset that contains 880 samples from…
Machine sound classification has been one of the fundamental tasks of music technology. A major branch of sound classification is the classification of music genres. However, though covering most genres of music, existing music genre datasets often do not contain fine-grained labels that indicate the detailed sub-genres of music. In consideration of the consistency of genres of songs in a mixtape or in a DJ (live) set, we have collected and annotated a dataset of house music that provide 4 sub-genre labels, namely future house, bass house, progressive house and melodic house. Experiments show …
Is it possible use algorithms to find trends in the history of popular music? And is it possible to predict the characteristics of future music genres? In order to answer these questions, we produced a hand-crafted dataset with the intent to put together features about style, psychology, sociology and typology, annotated by music genre and indexed by time and decade. We collected a list of popular genres by decade from Wikipedia and scored music genres based on Wikipedia descriptions. Using statistical and machine learning techniques, we find trends in the musical preferences and use time seri…

The music genre perception expressed through human annotations of artists or albums varies significantly across language-bound cultures. These variations cannot be modeled as mere translations since we also need to account for cultural differences in the music genre perception. In this work, we study the feasibility of obtaining relevant cross-lingual, culture-specific music genre annotations based only on language-specific semantic representations, namely distributed concept embeddings and ontologies. Our study, focused on six languages, shows that unsupervised cross-lingual music genre annot…

Organize songs, albums, and artists in groups with shared similarity could be done with the help of genre labels. In this paper, we present a novel approach for automatic classifying musical genre in Brazilian music using only the song lyrics. This kind of classification remains a challenge in the field of Natural Language Processing. We construct a dataset of 138,368 Brazilian song lyrics distributed in 14 genres. We apply SVM, Random Forest and a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) network combined with different word embeddings techniques to address this classification task. Our ex…

Studying under-represented music traditions under the MIR scope is crucial, not only for developing novel analysis tools, but also for unveiling musical functions that might prove useful in studying world musics. This paper presents a dataset for Greek Traditional and Folk music that includes 1570 pieces, summing in around 80 hours of data. The dataset incorporates YouTube timestamped links for retrieving audio and video, along with rich metadata information with regards to instrumentation, geography and genre, among others. The content has been collected from a Greek documentary series that i…

We look into the connection between the musical and lyrical content of metal music by combining automated extraction of high-level audio features and quantitative text analysis on a corpus of 124.288 song lyrics from this genre. Based on this text corpus, a topic model was first constructed using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). For a subsample of 503 songs, scores for predicting perceived musical hardness/heaviness and darkness/gloominess were extracted using audio feature models. By combining both audio feature and text analysis, we (1) offer a comprehensive overview of the lyrical topics …
This report introduces a new corpus of music, speech, and noise. This dataset is suitable for training models for voice activity detection (VAD) and music/speech discrimination. Our corpus is released under a flexible Creative Commons license. The dataset consists of music from several genres, speech from twelve languages, and a wide assortment of technical and non-technical noises. We demonstrate use of this corpus for music/speech discrimination on Broadcast news and VAD for speaker identification.

Originating in the Renaissance and burgeoning in the digital era, tablatures are a commonly used music notation system which provides explicit representations of instrument fingerings rather than pitches. GuitarPro has established itself as a widely used tablature format and software enabling musicians to edit and share songs for musical practice, learning, and composition. In this work, we present DadaGP, a new symbolic music dataset comprising 26,181 song scores in the GuitarPro format covering 739 musical genres, along with an accompanying tokenized format well-suited for generative sequenc…
Music Genres serve as an important meta-data in the field of music information retrieval and have been widely used for music classification and analysis tasks. Visualizing these music genres can thus be helpful for music exploration, archival and recommendation. Probabilistic topic models have been very successful in modelling text documents. In this work, we visualize music genres using a probabilistic topic model. Unlike text documents, audio is continuous and needs to be sliced into smaller segments. We use simple MFCC features of these segments as musical words. We apply the topic model on…
The world today is experiencing an abundance of music like no other time, and attempts to group music into clusters have become increasingly prevalent. Common standards for grouping music were songs, artists, and genres, with artists or songs exploring similar genres of music seen as related. These clustering attempts serve critical purposes for various stakeholders involved in the music industry. For end users of music services, they may want to group their music so that they can easily navigate inside their music library; for music streaming platforms like Spotify, companies may want to esta…
