The $p_\mathrm{T}$-differential production cross sections of prompt and non-prompt (produced in beauty-hadron decays) D mesons were measured by the ALICE experiment at midrapidity ($|y|<0.5$) in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02~\mathrm{TeV}$. The data sample used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $(19.3\pm0.4)~\mathrm{nb^{-1}}$. D mesons were reconstructed from their decays $\mathrm{D^0 \to K^-π^+}$, $\mathrm{D^+\to K^-π^+π^+}$, and $\mathrm{D_s^+\to ϕπ^+\to K^-K^+π^+}$ and their charge conjugates. Compared to previous measurements in the same rapidity region, the cross sections of prompt $\mathrm{D^+}$ and $\mathrm{D_s^+}$ mesons have an extended $p_\mathrm{T}$ coverage and total uncertainties reduced by a factor ranging from 1.05 to 1.6, depending on $p_\mathrm{T}$, allowing for a more precise determination of their $p_\mathrm{T}$-integrated cross sections. The results are well described by perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of heavy quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons, $f_\mathrm{s}/(f_\mathrm{u}+f_\mathrm{d})$, is compatible for charm and beauty quarks and with previous measurements at different centre-of-mass energies and collision systems. The $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ production cross section per rapidity unit at midrapidity, estimated from non-prompt D-meson measurements, is $\mathrm{d}σ_\mathrm{b\overline{b}}/\mathrm{d} y|_\mathrm{|y|<0.5} = 34.5 \pm 2.4 (\mathrm{stat.}) ^{+4.7}_{-2.9} (\mathrm{tot. syst.})~μ\mathrm{b}$. It is compatible with previous measurements at the same centre-of-mass energy and with the cross section predicted by perturbative QCD calculations.
This contribution summarizes a selection of recent results from the ALICE experiment. We show the cross-section of beauty jets in pp collisions, as well as the charmed baryon-to-meson production ratios, down to unprecedentedly low momenta, at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ and 13 TeV collision energies. We present the nuclear modification of ${\rm D}^0$-jets and the $v_2$ of non-prompt ${\rm D}^0$ in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. We also discuss the implications and constraints from comparing these data to some of the most recent theoretical models.
These proceedings summarize the LHCb measurements of charm- and beauty-hadron production in pPb collisions. The studies are made down to very low-\pt of the observed heavy-flavor hadrons using fully reconstructed decays. Nuclear matter effects are quantified via nuclear modification factors and forward-backward production ratios. A strong suppression is observed at positive rapidity (proton beam direction), while a modest or no suppression is seen for the backward rapidity (lead beam direction). The nuclear parton distributions of the lead nucleus is constrained down to Bjorken-$x\sim10^{-5}$,…
Measurements of the second Fourier harmonic coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distributions of prompt and nonprompt D$^0$ mesons produced in pp and pPb collisions are presented. Nonprompt D$^0$ mesons come from beauty hadron decays. The data samples are collected by the CMS experiment at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of 13 and 8.16 TeV, respectively. In high multiplicity pp collisions, $v_2$ signals for prompt charm hadrons are reported for the first time, and are found to be comparable to those for light-flavor hadron species over a transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) range of 2…
Electron spectra measured with ALICE at mid-rapidity are used to study the production of hadrons carrying a charm or a beauty quark. The production cross section of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays is measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV. Electrons from the beauty decays are identified via the displacement from the interaction vertex. From the electron spectra measured in Pb--Pb collisions, we determine the nuclear modification factor, which is sensitive to the heavy-quark energy loss in a hot strongly interacting medium.
The sum of charm and beauty in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV measured through nonphotonic electrons, show similar suppression at high pT as light hadrons, in contrast to expectations based on the dead cone effect. To understand this observation, it is important to separate the charm and beauty components. Non-photonic electron-D0 and electron-hadron azimuthal angular correlations are used to disentangle the contributions from charm and beauty decays. The beauty contribution in p+p collisions at 200 GeV is found to be comparable to charm at pT 5.5 GeV, indicating that beauty may contribute signif…
In this manuscript, various beauty production measurements using the ALICE detector will be presented. We will show new measurements of non-prompt D$^0$ mesons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ TeV and beauty-tagged jet production in p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV. The $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ of beauty-hadron decay electrons in central Pb--Pb collisions and the $v_{2}$ of beauty-hadron decay electrons in semi-central Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV will also be discussed.
The production cross section of electrons from semileptonic decays of beauty hadrons was measured at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.8) in the transverse momentum range $1 < p_{\rm T} < 8$ Gev/$c$ with the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV using an integrated luminosity of 2.2 nb$^{-1}$. Electrons from beauty hadron decays were selected based on the displacement of the decay vertex from the collision vertex. A perturbative QCD calculation agrees with the measurement within uncertainties. The data were extrapolated to the full phase space to d…
We present an analysis on the heavy flavor hadron decay electrons with charm and beauty contributions decomposed via a data driven method in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV at LHC. The transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ spectra, nuclear modification factor $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ and azimuthal anisotropic flow $v_2$ distributions of electrons from charm and beauty decays are obtained. We find that the electron $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ from charm ($R_{\mathrm{AA}}^{\mathrm{c\rightarrow e}}$) and beauty ($R_{\mathrm{AA}}^{\mathrm{b\rightarrow e}}$) decays are suppressed at $…
We present a study of charm and beauty isolation based on a data-driven method with recent measurements on heavy flavor hadrons and their decay electrons in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV at RHIC. The individual electron $p_{\rm T}$ spectra, $R_{\rm AA}$ and $v_2$ distributions from charmed and beauty hadron decays are obtained. We find that the electron $R_{\rm AA}$ from beauty hadron decays ($R_{\rm AA}^{\rm b\rightarrow e}$) is suppressed in minimum bias Au+Au collisions but less suppressed compared with that from charmed hadron decays at $p_{\rm T}$ $>$ 3.5 GeV/$c$, whic…
Measurements of heavy (charm and beauty) quarks provide useful insights into the properties of the quark--gluon plasma. The good particle identification capabilities of ALICE make a measurement based on the electrons from semi-leptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons feasible. This approach makes use of the large branching ratios ($\approx 10-20\%$) of heavy--flavour hadrons into electrons. Separation of the contribution from beauty-hadron decay electrons was achieved by utilizing the large decay length of the associated hadrons, making the investigation of beauty quarks in the medium possible…
At LHC energy, heavy quarks will be abundantly produced and the design of the ALICE detector will allow us to study their production using several channels. The expected heavy-quark in-medium energy loss in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC is calculated within a model, that is compared to the available heavy-quark quenching measurements at RHIC. The nuclear modification factors and heavy-to-light ratios of charm and beauty mesons are considered. The capability of the ALICE experiment for addressing this phenomenology is discussed.
The elliptic flow of electrons from beauty hadron decays at midrapidity ($|y|$ $<$ 0.8) is measured in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The azimuthal distribution of the particles produced in the collisions can be parameterized with a Fourier expansion, in which the second harmonic coefficient represents the elliptic flow, $v_{\rm 2}$. The $v_{\rm 2}$ coefficient of electrons from beauty-hadron decays is measured for the first time in the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) range 1.3-6 GeV/$c$ in the centrality class 30-50%. The measurement …
The production of beauty hadrons was measured via semi-leptonic decays at mid-rapidity with the ALICE detector at the LHC in the transverse momentum interval $1<p_{\rm T}<8$ GeV/$c$ in minimum-bias p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV and in $1.3<p_{\rm T}<8$ GeV/$c$ in the 20% most central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV. The pp reference spectra at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV, needed for the calculation of the nuclear modification factors $R_{\rm pPb}$ and $R_{\rm PbPb}$, were obtained by a pQCD-driven scaling of the cross section of electrons from…
The Large Hadron Collider at CERN will open a new energy domain for heavy-ion physics. Besides ALICE, the dedicated heavy-ion experiment, also ATLAS and CMS are preparing rich physics programs with nucleus-nucleus collisions. Here we focus on open heavy-flavour and quarkonia studies, among the fields that will most benefit from the high centre-of-mass energy at the LHC. We discuss a few examples of physics issues that can be addressed and we present a selection and comparison (where possible) of results on the expected capability of the three experiments.
The classical quenched quark models with three constituent quarks provide a good description for the baryon spatial ground states, but fail to reproduce the spectrum of baryon excited states. More and more evidences suggest that unquenched effects with multi-quark dynamics are necessary ingredients to solve the problem. Several new hyperon resonances reported recently could fit in the picture of penta-quark states. Based on this picture, some new hyperon excited states were predicted to exist; meanwhile with extension from strangeness to charm and beauty, super-heavy narrow $N^*$ and $Λ^*$ res…
We present a calculation of the elliptic flow of electrons from beauty-hadron decays in semi-central Pb--Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energy per colliding nucleon pair, represented as $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$, of 2.76 TeV. The result is obtained by the subtraction of the charm quark contribution in the elliptic flow of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in semi-central Pb--Pb collisions at \snn = 2.76 TeV recently made publicly available by the ALICE collaboration.
Prompt D meson and non-prompt J/$ψ$ yields are studied as a function of the multiplicity of charged particles produced in inelastic proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The results are reported as a ratio between yields in a given multiplicity interval normalised to the multiplicity-integrated ones (relative yields). They are shown as a function of the multiplicity of charged particles normalised to the average value for inelastic collisions (relative charged-particle multiplicity). D$^0$, D$^+$ and D$^{*+}$ mesons are measured in five $p_{\rm T}$ intervals …
We study the dependence on the quark mass of the compositeness of the lowest-lying odd parity hyperon states. Thus, we pay attention to $Λ-$like states in the strange, charm and beauty, sectors which are dynamically generated using a unitarized meson-baryon model. In the strange sector we use an SU(6) extension of the Weinberg-Tomozawa meson-baryon interaction, and we further implement the heavy-quark spin symmetry to construct the meson-baryon interaction when charmed or beauty hadrons are involved. In the three examined flavor sectors, we obtain two $J^P=1/2^-$ and one $J^P=3/2^-$ $Λ$ states…
The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC studies heavy-ion collisions to investigate the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are effective probes for this purpose. Both their energy loss in the medium as well as their possible thermalization yield information about the medium properties. Experimentally, the reconstruction of hadrons with charm valence quarks is possible. For hadrons with beauty valence quarks a promising strategy is the measurement of their decay electrons. To separate these from the background electrons (mainly from charm hadron decays, photo…

Charm and beauty quark production measurement represents a fundamental means to access the initial stage of hadronic collisions. Being produced almost exclusively in initial hard partonic scatterings due to their large masses, $m_{\text{c}}=$ 1.3 $ \text{GeV}/c^2$ and $m_{\text{b}} =$ 4.1 $ \text{GeV}/c^2$, charm and beauty quarks are ideal tools to investigate various QCD aspects. In addition, the corresponding measurements in pp collisions represent a baseline for cold nuclear matter studies in p--A collisions as well as for the characterization of the hot and dense interacting nuclear matte…
We review the hadro-production data presently available on open charm and beauty absolute production cross-sections, collected by experiments at CERN, DESY and Fermilab. The published charm production cross-section values are updated, in particular for the "time evolution" of the branching ratios. These measurements are compared to LO pQCD calculations, as a function of the collision energy, using recent parametrisations of the parton distribution functions. We then estimate, including nuclear effects of the parton densities, the charm and beauty production cross-sections relevant for measurem…
We suggest the ratio of the $ψ''(3770)/ψ'(3686)$ production cross sections as an unambiguous probe of the dominance of hard, point-like physics in charmonium production. If hard physics dominates the charmonium production the ratio : ${σ(ψ'')\overσ(ψ')}\approx {Γ(ψ''\to l^+l^-)\over Γ(ψ'\to l^+l^-)} \approx 0.1$ is independent of the process. We argue that since the dominant $D\bar D$ decay mode of the $ψ''$-meson can be detected with a high efficiency at the current facilities the effective counting rate for the $ψ''$ production should be comparable to that of the $ψ'$ and hence it could be o…
We present continuum extrapolated results of charmonium and bottomonium correlators in the vector channel at several temperatures below and above $T_c$. The continuum extrapolation jointly performed with the interpolations to have physical values of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ masses in the confined phase is based on calculations on several large quenched isotropic lattices using clover-improved Wilson valence fermions carrying different quark masses. The extrapolated lattice correlators are confronted with perturbation theory results incorporating resummed thermal effects around the threshold from pNRQCD a…
The ALICE collaboration at the LHC reports measurement of the inclusive production cross section of electrons from semi-leptonic decays of beauty hadrons with rapidity $|y|<0.8$ and transverse momentum $1<p_{\mathrm{T}}<10$ GeV/$c$, in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 2.76 TeV. Electrons not originating from semi-electronic decay of beauty hadrons are suppressed using the impact parameter of the corresponding tracks. The production cross section of beauty decay electrons is compared to the result obtained with an alternative method which uses the distribution of the azimuthal angle between heavy…
The production of non-prompt ${\rm D}^{0}$ mesons from beauty-hadron decays was measured at midrapidity ($\left| y \right| < 0.5$) in Pb-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02~\mathrm{TeV}$ with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Their nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$), measured for the first time down to $p_{\rm T}=1~\mathrm{GeV}/c$ in the $0-10$% and $30-50$% centrality classes, indicates a significant suppression, up to a factor of about three, for $p_{\rm T} > 5~\mathrm{GeV}/c$ in the $0-10$% central Pb-Pb collisions. The data are describ…
In this contribution, the final measurements of the centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) of non-prompt $\rm D^0$ in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV will be presented. These measurements provide important constraints to the in-medium mass dependent of energy loss and hadronisation of the beauty quark. The $p_{\rm T}$-integrated non-prompt $\rm D^0$ $R_{\rm AA}$ will be presented for the first time and will be compared to the prompt $\rm D^0$ one. This comparison will shed light on possible different shadowing effects betw…
