Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies appear to be the densest galaxy systems containing a few luminous galaxies in close proximity to each other, which have a typical size of a few tens kilopacsec in observation. On the other hand, in the modern hierarchical structure formation paradigm, galaxies are assembled and grouped in dark matter haloes, which have a typical size of a few hundreds of kiloparsec. Few studies have explored the physical connection between the observation based CGs and halo model based galaxy groups to date. In this study, by matching the largest local CG catalog of Zheng & Shen (2020) to the halo based group catalog of Yang et al. (2007), we find that the CGs are physically heterogenous systems and can be mainly separated into two categories, the isolated systems and those embedded in rich groups or clusters. By examining the dynamical features of CGs, we find that the isolated CGs have systematically lower dynamical masses than that of non-compact ones at the same group luminosity, indicating a more evolved stage of isolated CGs. On the other hand, the embedded CGs are mixtures of chance alignments in poor clusters and recent infalling groups (sub-structures) of rich clusters.
A compact group (CG) is a kind of special galaxy system where the galaxy members are separated at the distances of the order of galaxy size. The strong interaction between the galaxy members makes CGs ideal labs for studying the environmental effects on galaxy evolution. The traditional photometric selection algorithm biases against the CG candidates at low redshifts, while the spectroscopic identification technique is affected by the spectroscopic incompleteness of sample galaxies and typically biases against the high redshift candidates. In this study, we combine these two methods and select…
We firstly derive the stellar population properties: age and metallicity for $\sim$ 43,000 low redshift galaxies in the seventh data release (DR7) of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey, which have no spectroscopic observations in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS). We employ a fitting procedure based on the small-scale features of galaxy spectra so as to avoid possible biases from the uncertain flux calibration of the LAMOST spectroscopy. We show that our algorithm can successfully recover the average age and metallicity of the stellar populations of …
We outline a full-scale search for galaxies exhibiting double-peaked profiles of promi- nent narrow emission lines, motivated by the prospect of finding objects related to merging galaxies, and even dual active galactic nuclei candidates as by-product, from the Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Re- lease 4. We assemble a large sample of 325 candidates with double-peaked or strong asymmetric narrow emission lines, with 33 objects therein appearing optically resolved dual-cored structures, close companions or signs of recent interaction on the Sloan Dig- ita…

The identification and analysis of different variable sources is a hot issue in astrophysical research. The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) spectroscopic survey has accumulated massive spectral data but contains no information about variable sources. Although a few related studies present variable source catalogs for the LAMOST, the studies still have a few deficiencies regarding the type and number of variable sources identified. In this study, we presented a statistical modeling approach to identify variable source candidates. We first crossed the Kepler, S…
The presence of blue-cored dwarf early-type galaxies (dE(bc)s) in high-density environments supports the scenario of the transformation of infalling late-type galaxies into quiescent dwarf early-type galaxies by environmental effects. While low-density environments lacking environmental processes could not be relevant to the formation of dE(bc)s, we discovered a large sample of rare dE(bc)s in isolated environments at z < 0.01 using the NASA-Sloan Atlas catalog. Thirty-two isolated dE(bc)s were identified by visual inspection of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey images and g - r color profiles. We …

We explore the contribution of the Gaia-Sausage to the stellar halo of the Milky Way by making use of a Gaussian Mixture model (GMM) and applying it to halo star samples of LAMOST K giants, SEGUE K giants, and SDSS blue horizontal branch stars. The GMM divides the stellar halo into two parts, of which one represents a more metal-rich and highly radially biased component associated with an ancient, head-on collision referred to as the Gaia-Sausage, and the other one is a more metal-poor and isotropic halo. A symmetric bimodal Gaussian is used to describe the distribution of spherical velocity o…
Powerful outflows are thought to play a critical role in galaxy evolution and black hole growth. We present the first large-scale systematic study of ionised outflows in paired galaxies and post-mergers compared to a robust control sample of isolated galaxies. We isolate the impact of the merger environment to determine if outflow properties depend on merger stage. Our sample contains $\sim$4,000 paired galaxies and $\sim$250 post-mergers in the local universe ($0.02 \leq z \leq 0.2$) from the SDSS DR 7 matched in stellar mass, redshift, local density of galaxies, and [OIII] $λ$5007 luminosity…
We investigate the on-average properties for 28 star-forming ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) located in low-density environments, by stacking their spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These relatively-isolated UDGs, with stellar masses of $\log_{10}(M_*/M_{\odot})\sim 8.57\pm0.29$, have the on-average total-stellar-metallicity [M/H]$\sim -0.82\pm0.14$, iron-metallicity [Fe/H]$\sim -1.00\pm0.16$, stellar age $t_*\sim5.2\pm0.5$ Gyr, $α$-enhancement [$α$/Fe]$\sim 0.24\pm0.10$, and oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H)$\sim 8.16\pm0.06$, as well as central stellar velocity dispersion $54\pm12$ km/s. O…
The correlation between fresh gas accretion onto haloes and galaxy star formation is critical to understanding galaxy formation. Different theoretical models have predicted different correlation strengths between halo accretion rates and galaxy star formation rates, ranging from strong positive correlations to little or no correlation. Here, we present a technique to observationally measure this correlation strength for isolated Milky Way-mass galaxies with $z < 0.123$. This technique is based on correlations between dark matter accretion rates and the projected density profile of neighbouring…
Over a thousand stars in our Galaxy have been detected as radio emitters, but no normal stars are known to possess radio-emitting lobes similar to radio galaxies. Several recent attempts by us and other authors to find such objects remained inconclusive. Here we present a further search for double-lobed radio stars in two large samples of spectroscopic stars: over 20,000 white dwarves from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR12, and 2.5 million stars from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). These were cross-matched with sources from the Faint Images of the…
We present the discovery of rare active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in nearby (z < 0.05) compact elliptical galaxies (cEs) located in isolated environments. Using spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12, four AGNs were identified based on the optical emission-line diagnostic diagram. SDSS optical spectra of AGNs show the presence of distinct narrow-line emissions. Utilizing the black hole (BH) mass-stellar velocity dispersion scaling relation and the correlation between the narrow L([OIII])/L(H\b{eta}) line ratio and the width of the broad Hα emission line, we es…
Like massive galaxies, dwarf galaxies are expected to undergo major mergers with other dwarfs. However, the end state of these mergers and the role that merging plays in regulating dwarf star formation is uncertain. Using imaging from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic program, we construct a sample of dwarf-dwarf mergers and examine the star formation and host properties of the merging systems. These galaxies are selected via an automated detection algorithm from a sample of 6875 spectroscopically selected isolated dwarf galaxies at $z<0.12$ and $\log(M_\star/M_\odot)<9.6$ from the Galaxy…
The globular cluster (GC) systems of low-mass late-type galaxies, such as NGC 2403, have been poorly studied to date. As a low mass galaxy (M$_{\ast}$ = 7 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$), cosmological simulations predict NGC 2403 to contain few, if any, accreted GCs. It is also isolated, with a remarkably undisturbed HI disk. Based on candidates from the literature, Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Hyper Suprime-Cam imaging, we selected several GCs for follow-up spectroscopy using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. From their radial velocities, and other properties, we identify 8 bona-fide GCs associated …
Using images from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8, we have re-examined the morphology of 719 galaxies from the Analysis of the interstellar Medium in Isolated GAlaxies (AMIGA) project, a sample consisting of the most isolated galaxies that have yet been identified. The goal is to further improve the classifications of these galaxies by examining them in the context of the Comprehensive de Vaucouleurs revised Hubble-Sandage (CVRHS) system, which includes recognition of features that go beyond the original de Vaucouleurs point of view. Our results confirm previous findings that isolated …
We present the stellar mass profiles of 147 isolated quiescent galaxies in very low-density environments (i.e., void regions) in the local Universe ($0.01<z<0.06$) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These galaxies have stellar masses between $ 9.8\lesssim \log(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})\lesssim11.2$ and they represent $\sim15\%$ of the whole galaxy population in the void regions down to $M_{r} = -19$. We do not find any isolated quiescent galaxies with $\log(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})\gtrsim11.2$. We compare the stellar mass profiles of these isolated quiescent galaxies with the profiles of stellar mass-mat…
We examine the quenching characteristics of $328$ isolated dwarf galaxies $\left(10^{8} < M_{\rm star}/M_\odot < 10^{10} \right)$ within the \Rom{} cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Using mock observation methods, we identify isolated dwarf galaxies with quenched star formation and make direct comparisons to the quenched fraction in the NASA Sloan Atlas (NSA). Similar to other cosmological simulations, we find a population of quenched, isolated dwarf galaxies below $M_{\rm star} < 10^{9} M_\odot$ not detected within the NSA. We find that the presence of massive black holes (MBHs) in \Rom{}…
DGSAT: Dwarf Galaxy Survey with Amateur Telescopes II. A catalogue of isolated nearby edge-on disk galaxies and the discovery of new low surface brightness systems
The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) Data Release 3 (DR3) catalogue was released in 2019, which contains the data from all BASS and the Mosaic z-band Legacy Survey (MzLS) observations during 2015 January and 2019 March, about 200 million sources. We cross-match BASS DR3 with spectral databases from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) to obtain the spectroscopic classes of known samples. Then, the samples are cross-matched with ALLWISE database. Based on optical and infrared information of the samples, we use the XGBoos…

We investigate the dependence of stellar disc scale lengths on environment for a sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 galaxies with published photometric bulge-disc decompositions. We compare disc scale lengths at fixed bulge mass for galaxies in an isolated field environment to galaxies in X-ray rich and X-ray poor groups. At low bulge mass, stellar disc scale lengths in X-ray rich groups are smaller compared to discs in both X-ray poor groups and in isolated field environments. This decrease in disc scale length is largely independent of halo mass, though shows some dependence o…
Although Compact Groups of galaxies (CGs) have been envisioned as isolated extremely dense structures in the Universe, it is accepted today that many of them could be not as isolated as thought. In this work, we study Hickson-like CGs identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16 to analyse these systems and their galaxies when embedded in different cosmological structures. To achieve this goal, we identify several cosmological structures where CGs can reside: Nodes of filaments, Loose Groups, Filaments and cosmic Voids. Our results indicate that 45 per cent of CGs do not reside i…
We report on a study of the galaxy environments of low redshift physical quasars pairs. We selected 20 pairs having projected separation $<$ 0.5 Mpc and difference of systemic velocity $<$ 800 km s$^{-1}$. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey images we evaluated the galaxy overdensity around these quasars in pairs and then compare it with that of a sample of isolated quasars with same redshift and luminosity. It is found that on average there is a systematic larger overdensity of galaxies around quasars in pairs with respect to that of isolated quasars. This may represent a significant link between …
We apply a spectral stacking technique to Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations to measure the neutral atomic hydrogen content (HI) of nearby galaxies in and around galaxy groups at $z < 0.11$. Our sample includes 577 optically-selected galaxies (120 isolated galaxies and 457 satellites) covering stellar masses between 10$^{10}$ and 10$^{11.5}$ M$_{\odot}$, cross-matched with Yang's group catalogue, with angular and redshift positions from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the satellites in the centres of groups have lower HI masses at fixed stellar mass and morphology (ch…
