Machine translation (MT) systems, especially when designed for an industrial setting, are trained with general parallel data derived from the Web. Thus, their style is typically driven by word/structure distribution coming from the average of many domains. In contrast, MT customers want translations to be specialized to their domain, for which they are typically able to provide text samples. We describe an approach for customizing MT systems on specific domains by selecting data similar to the target customer data to train neural translation models. We build document classifiers using monolingual target data, e.g., provided by the customers to select parallel training data from Web crawled data. Finally, we train MT models on our automatically selected data, obtaining a system specialized to the target domain. We tested our approach on the benchmark from WMT-18 Translation Task for News domains enabling comparisons with state-of-the-art MT systems. The results show that our models outperform the top systems while using less data and smaller models.
A large number of machine translation approaches have recently been developed to facilitate the fluid migration of content across languages. However, the literature suggests that many obstacles must still be dealt with to achieve better automatic translations. One of these obstacles is lexical and syntactic ambiguity. A promising way of overcoming this problem is using Semantic Web technologies. This article is an extended abstract of our systematic review on machine translation approaches that rely on Semantic Web technologies for improving the translation of texts. Overall, we present the ch…

In this paper, we investigate the use of linguistically motivated and computationally efficient structured language models for reranking N-best hypotheses in a statistical machine translation system. These language models, developed from Constraint Dependency Grammar parses, tightly integrate knowledge of words, morphological and lexical features, and syntactic dependency constraints. Two structured language models are applied for N-best rescoring, one is an almost-parsing language model, and the other utilizes more syntactic features by explicitly modeling syntactic dependencies between words…

Machine translation has been a major motivation of development in natural language processing. Despite the burgeoning achievements in creating more efficient machine translation systems thanks to deep learning methods, parallel corpora have remained indispensable for progress in the field. In an attempt to create parallel corpora for the Kurdish language, in this paper, we describe our approach in retrieving potentially-alignable news articles from multi-language websites and manually align them across dialects and languages based on lexical similarity and transliteration of scripts. We presen…
West Greenlandic, known by native speakers as Kalaallisut, is an extremely low-resource polysynthetic language spoken by around 56,000 people in Greenland. Here, we attempt to finetune a pretrained Kalaallisut-to-English neural machine translation (NMT) system using web-crawled pseudoparallel sentences from around 30 multilingual websites. We compile a corpus of over 93,000 Kalaallisut sentences and over 140,000 Danish sentences, then use cross-lingual sentence embeddings and approximate nearest-neighbors search in an attempt to mine near-translations from these corpora. Finally, we translate …
In this paper, we describe a tool for debugging the output and attention weights of neural machine translation (NMT) systems and for improved estimations of confidence about the output based on the attention. The purpose of the tool is to help researchers and developers find weak and faulty example translations that their NMT systems produce without the need for reference translations. Our tool also includes an option to directly compare translation outputs from two different NMT engines or experiments. In addition, we present a demo website of our tool with examples of good and bad translatio…

Parallel corpus is a critical resource in machine learning-based translation. The task of collecting, extracting, and aligning texts in order to build an acceptable corpus for doing the translation is very tedious most especially for low-resource languages. In this paper, we present the efforts made to build a parallel corpus for Cebuano and Filipino from two different domains: biblical texts and the web. For the biblical resource, subword unit translation for verbs and copy-able approach for nouns were applied to correct inconsistencies in the translation. This correction mechanism was applie…
Large parallel corpora that are automatically obtained from the web, documents or elsewhere often exhibit many corrupted parts that are bound to negatively affect the quality of the systems and models that learn from these corpora. This paper describes frequent problems found in data and such data affects neural machine translation systems, as well as how to identify and deal with them. The solutions are summarised in a set of scripts that remove problematic sentences from input corpora.

This paper describes strategies to improve an existing web-based computer-aided translation (CAT) tool entitled CATaLog Online. CATaLog Online provides a post-editing environment with simple yet helpful project management tools. It offers translation suggestions from translation memories (TM), machine translation (MT), and automatic post-editing (APE) and records detailed logs of post-editing activities. To test the new approaches proposed in this paper, we carried out a user study on an English--German translation task using CATaLog Online. User feedback revealed that the users preferred usin…
We show that margin-based bitext mining in a multilingual sentence space can be applied to monolingual corpora of billions of sentences. We are using ten snapshots of a curated common crawl corpus (Wenzek et al., 2019) totalling 32.7 billion unique sentences. Using one unified approach for 38 languages, we were able to mine 4.5 billions parallel sentences, out of which 661 million are aligned with English. 20 language pairs have more then 30 million parallel sentences, 112 more then 10 million, and most more than one million, including direct alignments between many European or Asian languages…

Machine translation (MT) is a technique that leverages computers to translate human languages automatically. Nowadays, neural machine translation (NMT) which models direct mapping between source and target languages with deep neural networks has achieved a big breakthrough in translation performance and become the de facto paradigm of MT. This article makes a review of NMT framework, discusses the challenges in NMT, introduces some exciting recent progresses and finally looks forward to some potential future research trends. In addition, we maintain the state-of-the-art methods for various NMT…
Cross-lingual document alignment aims to identify pairs of documents in two distinct languages that are of comparable content or translations of each other. In this paper, we exploit the signals embedded in URLs to label web documents at scale with an average precision of 94.5% across different language pairs. We mine sixty-eight snapshots of the Common Crawl corpus and identify web document pairs that are translations of each other. We release a new web dataset consisting of over 392 million URL pairs from Common Crawl covering documents in 8144 language pairs of which 137 pairs include Engli…
This paper describes the systems that we submitted to the WMT19 Machine Translation robustness task. This task aims to improve MT's robustness to noise found on social media, like informal language, spelling mistakes and other orthographic variations. The organizers provide parallel data extracted from a social media website in two language pairs: French-English and Japanese-English (in both translation directions). The goal is to obtain the best scores on unseen test sets from the same source, according to automatic metrics (BLEU) and human evaluation. We proposed one single and one ensemble …
The acceleration in telecommunication needs leads to many groups of research, especially in communication facilitating and Machine Translation fields. While people contact with others having different languages and cultures, they need to have instant translations. However, the available instant translators are still providing somewhat bad Arabic-English Translations, for instance when translating books or articles, the meaning is not totally accurate. Therefore, using the semantic web techniques to deal with the homographs and homonyms semantically, the aim of this research is to extend a mode…
We present DeepGen, a system deployed at web scale for automatically creating sponsored search advertisements (ads) for BingAds customers. We leverage state-of-the-art natural language generation (NLG) models to generate fluent ads from advertiser's web pages in an abstractive fashion and solve practical issues such as factuality and inference speed. In addition, our system creates a customized ad in real-time in response to the user's search query, therefore highlighting different aspects of the same product based on what the user is looking for. To achieve this, our system generates a divers…

Although a machine translation model trained with a large in-domain parallel corpus achieves remarkable results, it still works poorly when no in-domain data are available. This situation restricts the applicability of machine translation when the target domain's data are limited. However, there is great demand for high-quality domain-specific machine translation models for many domains. We propose a framework that efficiently and effectively collects parallel sentences in a target domain from the web with the help of crowdworkers. With the collected parallel data, we can quickly adapt a machi…
Neural machine translation systems typically are trained on curated corpora and break when faced with non-standard orthography or punctuation. Resilience to spelling mistakes and typos, however, is crucial as machine translation systems are used to translate texts of informal origins, such as chat conversations, social media posts and web pages. We propose a simple generative noise model to generate adversarial examples of ten different types. We use these to augment machine translation systems' training data and show that, when tested on noisy data, systems trained using adversarial examples …

Although there are increasing and significant ties between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, there is not much parallel corpora in the Chinese-Portuguese language pair. Both languages are very populous, with 1.2 billion native Chinese speakers and 279 million native Portuguese speakers, the language pair, however, could be considered as low-resource in terms of available parallel corpora. In this paper, we describe our methods to curate Chinese-Portuguese parallel corpora and evaluate their quality. We extracted bilingual data from Macao government websites and proposed a hierarchical s…

Evaluation of cross-lingual encoders is usually performed either via zero-shot cross-lingual transfer in supervised downstream tasks or via unsupervised cross-lingual textual similarity. In this paper, we concern ourselves with reference-free machine translation (MT) evaluation where we directly compare source texts to (sometimes low-quality) system translations, which represents a natural adversarial setup for multilingual encoders. Reference-free evaluation holds the promise of web-scale comparison of MT systems. We systematically investigate a range of metrics based on state-of-the-art cros…
We have implemented a machine translation system, the PolyMath Translator, for LaTeX documents containing mathematical text. The current implementation translates English LaTeX to French LaTeX, attaining a BLEU score of 53.5 on a held-out test corpus of mathematical sentences. It produces LaTeX documents that can be compiled to PDF without further editing. The system first converts the body of an input LaTeX document into English sentences containing math tokens, using the pandoc universal document converter to parse LaTeX input. We have trained a Transformer-based translator model, using Open…
In this paper we describe our efforts to make a bidirectional Congolese Swahili (SWC) to French (FRA) neural machine translation system with the motivation of improving humanitarian translation workflows. For training, we created a 25,302-sentence general domain parallel corpus and combined it with publicly available data. Experimenting with low-resource methodologies like cross-dialect transfer and semi-supervised learning, we recorded improvements of up to 2.4 and 3.5 BLEU points in the SWC-FRA and FRA-SWC directions, respectively. We performed human evaluations to assess the usability of ou…

We propose Semantic Parser Localizer (SPL), a toolkit that leverages Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems to localize a semantic parser for a new language. Our methodology is to (1) generate training data automatically in the target language by augmenting machine-translated datasets with local entities scraped from public websites, (2) add a few-shot boost of human-translated sentences and train a novel XLMR-LSTM semantic parser, and (3) test the model on natural utterances curated using human translators. We assess the effectiveness of our approach by extending the current capabilities of…
Counterfactual learning is a natural scenario to improve web-based machine translation services by offline learning from feedback logged during user interactions. In order to avoid the risk of showing inferior translations to users, in such scenarios mostly exploration-free deterministic logging policies are in place. We analyze possible degeneracies of inverse and reweighted propensity scoring estimators, in stochastic and deterministic settings, and relate them to recently proposed techniques for counterfactual learning under deterministic logging.
The performance of Neural Machine Translation (NMT) depends significantly on the size of the available parallel corpus. Due to this fact, low resource language pairs demonstrate low translation performance compared to high resource language pairs. The translation quality further degrades when NMT is performed for morphologically rich languages. Even though the web contains a large amount of information, most people in Sri Lanka are unable to read and understand English properly. Therefore, there is a huge requirement of translating English content to local languages to share information among …
As a crucial role in cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), query translation has three main challenges: 1) the adequacy of translation; 2) the lack of in-domain parallel training data; and 3) the requisite of low latency. To this end, existing CLIR systems mainly exploit statistical-based machine translation (SMT) rather than the advanced neural machine translation (NMT), limiting the further improvements on both translation and retrieval quality. In this paper, we investigate how to exploit neural query translation model into CLIR system. Specifically, we propose a novel data augmentat…
One of the challenges in a task oriented natural language application like the Google Assistant, Siri, or Alexa is to localize the output to many languages. This paper explores doing this by applying machine translation to the English output. Using machine translation is very scalable, as it can work with any English output and can handle dynamic text, but otherwise the problem is a poor fit. The required quality bar is close to perfection, the range of sentences is extremely narrow, and the sentences are often very different than the ones in the machine translation training data. This combina…

Building effective neural machine translation (NMT) models for very low-resourced and morphologically rich African indigenous languages is an open challenge. Besides the issue of finding available resources for them, a lot of work is put into preprocessing and tokenization. Recent studies have shown that standard tokenization methods do not always adequately deal with the grammatical, diacritical, and tonal properties of some African languages. That, coupled with the extremely low availability of training samples, hinders the production of reliable NMT models. In this paper, using Fon language…
Traditional information retrieval (such as that offered by web search engines) impedes users with information overload from extensive result pages and the need to manually locate the desired information therein. Conversely, question-answering systems change how humans interact with information systems: users can now ask specific questions and obtain a tailored answer - both conveniently in natural language. Despite obvious benefits, their use is often limited to an academic context, largely because of expensive domain customizations, which means that the performance in domain-specific applicat…
Users often query a search engine with a specific question in mind and often these queries are keywords or sub-sentential fragments. For example, if the users want to know the answer for "What's the capital of USA", they will most probably query "capital of USA" or "USA capital" or some keyword-based variation of this. For example, for the user entered query "capital of USA", the most probable question intent is "What's the capital of USA?". In this paper, we are proposing a method to generate well-formed natural language question from a given keyword-based query, which has the same question i…
Neural machine translation (NMT) has progressed rapidly over the past several years, and modern models are able to achieve relatively high quality using only monolingual text data, an approach dubbed Unsupervised Machine Translation (UNMT). However, these models still struggle in a variety of ways, including aspects of translation that for a human are the easiest - for instance, correctly translating common nouns. This work explores a cheap and abundant resource to combat this problem: bilingual lexica. We test the efficacy of bilingual lexica in a real-world set-up, on 200-language translatio…
