The Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation is ubiquitous in many areas of physics that have an explicit time-dependence, including quantum systems with time dependent Hamiltonian, cosmology, time-dependent harmonic oscillators, accelerator dynamics, etc. The Eliezer and Gray physical interpretation of the Ermakov-Lewis invariant is applied as a guiding principle for the derivation of the special relativistic analog of the Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation and associated first integral. The special relativistic extension of the Ray-Reid system and invariant is obtained. General properties of the relativistic Ermakov-Milne-Pinney are analyzed. The conservative case of the relativistic Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation is described in terms of a pseudo-potential, reducing the problem to an effective Newtonian form. The non-relativistic limit is considered as well. A relativistic nonlinear superposition law for relativistic Ermakov systems is identified. The generalized Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation has additional nonlinearities, due to the relativistic effects.
We employ the method of nonlocal generalized Sundman transformations to formulate the linearization problem for equations of the generalized Liénard type and show that they may be mapped to equations of the dissipative Ermakov-Milne-Pinney type. We obtain the corresponding new first integrals of these derived equations, this method yields a natural generalization of the construction of Ermakov-Lewis invariant for a time dependent oscillator to (coupled) Liénard and Liénard type equations. We also study the linearization problem for the coupled Liénard equation using nonlocal transformations an…
We extend Fring-Tenney approach of constructing invariants of constant mass time-dependent system to the case of a time-dependent mass particle. From a coupled set of equations described in terms of guiding parameter functions, we track down a modified Ermakov-Pinney equation involving a time-dependent mass function. As a concrete example we focus on an exponential choice of the mass function.
It is shown that the nonlinear Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation $ρ^{\prime\prime}+v(x)ρ=a/ρ^3$ obeys the property of covariance under a class of transformations of its coefficient function. This property is derived by using supersymmetric, or Darboux, transformations. The general solution of the transformed equation is expressed in terms of the solution of the original one. Both iterations of these transformations and irreducible transformations of second order in derivatives are considered to obtain the chain of mutually related Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equations. The behaviour of the Lewis invarian…
The previously introduced Quantum Arnold Transformation, a unitary operator mapping the solutions of the Schrödinger equation for time dependent quadratic Hamiltonians into the solutions for the free particle, is revised and some interesting extensions are introduced, providing in particular a generalization of the Ermakov-Pinney equation.
The connection between the method of comparison equations (generalized WKB method) and the Ermakov-Pinney equation is established. A perturbative scheme of solution of the generalized Ermakov-Pinney equation is developed and is applied to the construction of perturbative series for second-order differential equations with and without turning points.
The class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations $y^{\prime\prime}y = F(z,y^2)$, where F is a smooth function, is studied. Various nonlinear ordinary differential equations, whose applicative importance is well known, belong to such a class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Indeed, the Emden-Fowler equation, the Ermakov-Pinney equation and the generalized Ermakov equations are among them. Bäcklund transformations and auto Bäcklund transformations are constructed: these last transformations induce the construction of a ladder of new solutions adimitted by the given differentia…
It is shown that the dynamics of cosmologies sourced by a mixture of perfect fluids and self-interacting scalar fields are described by the non-linear, Ermakov-Pinney equation. The general solution of this equation can be expressed in terms of particular solutions to a related, linear differential equation. This characteristic is employed to derive exact cosmologies in the inflationary and quintessential scenarios. The relevance of the Ermakov-Pinney equation to the braneworld scenario is discussed.
We establish a connection between the general equations of nonlinear elastodynamics and the nonlinear ordinary differential equation of Pinney [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 1 (1950) 681]. As a starting point, we use the exact travelling wave solutions of nonlinear elasticity discovered by Carroll [Acta Mechanica 3 (1967) 167]. The connection provides a method for finding new exact and approximate dynamic solutions for neo-Hookean and Mooney-Rivlin solids, and for the general third- and fourth-order elasticity models of incompressible solids.
We introduce a special type of dissipative Ermakov-Pinney equations of the form v_{ζζ}+g(v)v_ζ+h(v)=0, where h(v)=h_0(v)+cv^{-3} and the nonlinear dissipation g(v) is based on the corresponding Chiellini integrable Abel equation. When h_0(v) is a linear function, h_0(v)=λ^2v, general solutions are obtained following the Abel equation route. Based on particular solutions, we also provide general solutions containing a factor with the phase of the Milne type. In addition, the same kinds of general solutions are constructed for the cases of higher-order Reid nonlinearities. The Chiellini dissipat…
We use the geometric approach to the theory of Lie systems of differential equations in order to study dissipative Ermakov systems. We prove that there is a superposition rule for solutions of such equations. This fact enables us to express the general solution of a dissipative Milne--Pinney equation in terms of particular solutions of a system of second-order linear differential equations and a set of constants.

A cosmological extension of the Eisenhart-Duval metric is constructed by incorporating a cosmic scale factor and the energy-momentum tensor into the scheme. The dynamics of the spacetime is governed the Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation. Killing isometries include spatial translations and rotations, Newton--Hooke boosts and translation in the null direction. Geodesic motion in Ermakov-Milne-Pinney cosmoi is analyzed. The derivation of the Ermakov-Lewis invariant, the Friedmann equations and the Dmitriev-Zel'dovich equations within the Eisenhart--Duval framework is presented.
We revise the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant method for solving the quantum time-dependent harmonic oscillator in light of the Quantum Arnold Transformation previously introduced and its recent generalization to the Quantum Arnold-Ermakov-Pinney Transformation. We prove that both methods are equivalent and show the advantages of the Quantum Arnold-Ermakov-Pinney transformation over the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant method. We show that, in the quantum time-dependent and damped harmonic oscillator, the invariant proposed by Dodonov & Man'ko is more suitable and provide some examples to illustrate it, …
We review some recent results of the theory of Lie systems in order to apply such results to study Ermakov systems. The fundamental properties of Ermakov systems, i.e. their superposition rules, the Lewis-Ermakov invariants, etc., are found from this new perspective. We also obtain new results, such as a new superposition rule for the Pinney equation in terms of three solutions of a related Riccati equation.
By using Lie symmetry methods, we identify a class of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations invariant under at least one dimensional subgroup of the symmetry group of the Ermakov-Pinney equation. In this context, nonlinear superposition rule for second order Kummer-Schwarz equation is rediscovered. Invariance under one-dimensional symmetry group is also used to obtain first integrals (Ermakov-Lewis invariants). Our motivation is a type of equations with singular term that arises in many applications, in particular in the study of general NLS (nonlinear Schrödinger) equations.
We generalize the Milne quantization condition to non-Hermitian systems. In the general case the underlying nonlinear Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation needs to be replaced by a nonlinear integral differential equation. However, when the system is PT-symmetric or/and quasi/pseudo-Hermitian the equations simplify and one may employ the original energy integral to determine its quantization. We illustrate the working of the general framework with the Swanson model and two explicit examples for pairs of supersymmetric Hamiltonians. In one case both partner Hamiltonians are Hermitian and in the other …
For the case of nonlinear second-order differential equations with a constant coefficient of the first derivative term and polynomial nonlinearities, the factorization conditions of Rosu and Cornejo-Perez are approached in two ways: (i) by commuting the subindices of the factorization functions in the two factorization conditions and (ii) by leaving invariant only the first factorization condition achieved by using monomials or polynomial sequences. For the first case, the factorization brackets commute and the generated equations are only equations of Ermakov-Pinney type. The second modificat…
We elaborate further on the metric representation that is obtained by transferring the time-dependence from a Hermitian Hamiltonian to the metric operator in a related non-Hermitian system. We provide further insight into the procedure on how to employ the time-dependent Dyson relation and the quasi-Hermiticity relation to solve time-dependent Hermitian Hamiltonian systems. By solving both equations separately we argue here that it is in general easier to solve the former. We solve the mutually related time-dependent Schroedinger equation for a Hermitian and non-Hermitian spin 1/2, 1 and 3/2 m…
We investigate a quantum mechanical system on a noncommutative space for which the structure constant is explicitly time-dependent. Any autonomous Hamiltonian on such a space acquires a time-dependent form in terms of the conventional canonical variables. We employ the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants to construct explicit analytical solutions for the corresponding time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of the solutions of variants of the nonlinear Ermakov-Pinney equation and discussed in detail for various types of background fields. We utilize th…
A Lie system is a system of first-order differential equations admitting a superposition rule, i.e., a map that expresses its general solution in terms of a generic family of particular solutions and certain constants. In this work, we use the geometric theory of Lie systems to prove that the explicit integration of second- and third-order Kummer--Schwarz equations is equivalent to obtaining a particular solution of a Lie system on SL(2,R). This same result can be extended to Riccati, Milne--Pinney and other related equations. We demonstrate that all the above-mentioned equations associated wi…
We consider quantum field theoretic systems subject to a time-dependent perturbation, and discuss the question of defining a time dependent particle number not just at asymptotic early and late times, but also during the perturbation. Naively, this is not a well-defined notion for such a non-equilibrium process, as the particle number at intermediate times depends on a basis choice of reference states with respect to which particles and anti-particles are defined, even though the final late-time particle number is independent of this basis choice. The basis choice is associated with a particul…
