This paper presents (Lagrangian) variational formulations for single and multicomponent semi-compressible fluids with both reversible (entropy-conserving) and irreversible (entropy-generating) processes. Semi-compressible fluids are useful in describing \textit{low-Mach} dynamics, since they are \textit{soundproof}. These models find wide use in many areas of fluid dynamics, including both geophysical and astrophysical fluid dynamics. Specifically, the Boussinesq, anelastic and pseudoincompressible equations are developed through a unified treatment valid for arbitrary Riemannian manifolds, thermodynamic potentials and geopotentials. By design, these formulations obey the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics, ensuring their thermodynamic consistency. This general approach extends and unifies existing work, and helps clarify the thermodynamics of semi-compressible fluids. To further this goal, evolution equations are presented for a wide range of thermodynamic variables: entropy density $s$, specific entropy $η$, buoyancy $b$, temperature $T$, potential temperature $θ$ and a generic entropic variable $χ$; along with a general definition of buoyancy valid for all three semicompressible models and arbitrary geopotentials. Finally, the elliptic equation is developed for all three equation sets in the case of reversible dynamics, and for the Boussinesq/anelastic equations in the case of irreversible dynamics; and some discussion is given of the difficulty in formulating the elliptic equation for the pseudoincompressible equations with irreversible dynamics.
We derive mathematical models of the elementary process of dissolution/growth of bubbles in a liquid under pressure control. The modeling starts with a fully compressible version, both for the liquid and the gas phase so that the entropy principle can be easily evaluated. This yields a full PDE system for a compressible two-phase fluid with mass transfer of the gaseous species. Then the passage to an incompressible solvent in the liquid phase is discussed, where a carefully chosen equation of state for the liquid mixture pressure allows for a limit in which the solvent density is constant. We …

A thermodynamically consistent and robust four-equation model for multi-phase multi-component compressible flows using ENO-type schemes including interface regularization
We prove global existence of appropriate weak solutions for the compressible Navier--Stokes equations for more general stress tensor than those covered by P.-L. Lions and E. Feireisl's theory. More precisely we focus on more general pressure laws which are not thermodynamically stable; we are also able to handle some anisotropy in the viscous stress tensor. To give answers to these two longstanding problems, we revisit the classical compactness theory on the density by obtaining precise quantitative regularity estimates: This requires a more precise analysis of the structure of the equations c…
A two-phase model and its application to wavefields numerical simulation are discussed in the context of modeling of compressible fluid flows in elastic porous media. The derivation of the model is based on a theory of thermodynamically compatible systems and on a model of nonlinear elastoplasticity combined with a two-phase compressible fluid flow model. The governing equations of the model include phase mass conservation laws, a total momentum conservation law, an equation for the relative velocities of the phases, an equation for mixture distortion, and a balance equation for porosity. They…
Derivation of governing equations for multiphase flow on the base of thermodynamically compatible systems theory is presented. The mixture is considered as a continuum in which the multiphase character of the flow is taken into account. The resulting governing equations of the formulated model belong to the class of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. In order to examine the reliability of the model, the one-dimensional Riemann problem for the four phase flow is studied numerically with the use of the MUSCL-Hancock method in conjunction with the GFORCE flux.
Hydrodynamics of the non-relativistic compressible fluid in the curved spacetime is derived using the generalized framework of the stochastic variational method (SVM) for continuum medium. The fluid-stress tensor of the resultant equation becomes asymmetric for the exchange of the indices, differently from the standard Euclidean one. Its incompressible limit suggests that the viscous term should be represented with the Bochner Laplacian. Moreover the modified Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) equation proposed by Brenner can be considered even in the curved spacetime. To confirm the compatibility wi…
A suitable expression for hydrodynamic impulse in a compressible fluid is deduced. The development of appropriate impulse formulation for compressible Euler equations confirms the propriety of the hydrodynamic impulse expression for a compressible fluid given here. Implications of the application of this formulation to a compressible vortex ring are pointed out. A variational characterization for an axisymmetric vortex system moving steadily in an ideal, compressible fluid is discussed.
A variational framework is defined for vertical slice models with three dimensional velocity depending only on x and z. The models that result from this framework are Hamiltonian, and have a Kelvin-Noether circulation theorem that results in a conserved potential vorticity in the slice geometry. These results are demonstrated for the incompressible Euler--Boussinesq equations with a constant temperature gradient in the $y$-direction (the Eady--Boussinesq model), which is an idealised problem used to study the formation and subsequent evolution of weather fronts. We then introduce a new compres…
We consider an isotropic compressible non-dissipative fluid with broken parity subject to free surface boundary conditions in two spatial dimensions. The hydrodynamic equations describing the bulk dynamics of the fluid as well as the free surface boundary conditions depend explicitly on the parity breaking non-dissipative odd viscosity term. We construct a variational principle in the form of an effective action which gives both bulk hydrodynamic equations and free surface boundary conditions. The free surface boundary conditions require an additional boundary term in the action which resemble…
The coupling between dilatation and vorticity, two coexisting and fundamental processes in fluid dynamics is investigated here, in the simplest cases of inviscid 2D isotropic Burgers and pressureless Euler-Coriolis fluids respectively modeled by single vortices confined in compressible, local, inertial and global, rotating, environments. The field equations are established, inductively, starting from the equations of the characteristics solved with an initial Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity fields namely a vorticity free and a divergence free part and, deductively, by means of a canoni…
Nonlinear WKB is a multiscale technique for studying locally-plane-wave solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE). Its application comprises two steps: (1) replacement of the original PDE with an extended system separating the large scales from the small, and (2) reduction of the extended system to its slow manifold. In the context of variational fluid theories with particle relabeling symmetry, nonlinear WKB in the mean Eulerian frame is known to possess a variational structure. This much has been demonstrated using, for instance, the theoretical apparatus known as the gener…
The variational principle for linear stability of three-dimensional, inhomogenious, compressible, moving magnetized plasma is suggested. The principle is ``softer'' (easier to be satisfied) than all previously known variational stability conditions. The key point of the analysis is a conservation in variations of new integrals inherent in the linearized equation of the motion that was not earlier discussed in the literature.
We report on simulations of two-phase flows with deforming interfaces at various density contrasts by solving thermodynamically consistent Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes equations. An (essentially) unconditionally energy-stable Crank-Nicolson-type time integration scheme is used. Detailed proofs of energy stability of the semi-discrete scheme and for the existence of solutions of the advective-diffusive Cahn-Hilliard operator are provided. In space we discretize with a conforming continuous Galerkin finite element method in conjunction with a residual-based variational multi-scale (VMS) approach …

General properties of conservative hydrodynamic-type models are treated from positions of the canonical formalism adopted for liquid continuous media, with applications to the compressible Eulerian hydrodynamics, special- and general-relativistic fluid dynamics, and two-fluid plasma model including the Hall-magnetohydrodynamics. A variational formulation is found for motion and interaction of frozen-in localized vortex structures and acoustic waves in a special description where dynamical variables are, besides the Eulerian fields of the fluid density and the potential component of the canonic…
The shallow water equations without shear effects are similar to the gas dynamics equations with a polytropic equation of state. When the shear effects are taken into account, the equations contain additional evolution equations mathematically analogous to those of the Reynolds stresses in turbulent flows of compressible fluids when the source terms are neglected (ideal turbulence). We show that the non-dissipative model of shear shallow water flows and the model of ideal turbulence admit a similar variational formulation where, in the both cases, the equations for the Reynolds stress tensor e…
Wormlike micelles are self-assemblies of polymer chains that can break and recombine reversibly. In this paper, we derive a thermodynamically consistent two species micro-macro model of wormlike micellar solutions by employing an energetic variational approach. The model incorporates a breakage and combination process of polymer chains into the classical micro-macro dumbbell model for polymeric fluids in a unified variational framework. We also study different maximum entropy closure approximations to the new model by "variation-then-closure" and "closure-then-variation" approaches. By imposin…
We propose thermodynamically consistent models for viscoelastic fluids with a stress diffusion term. In particular, we derive variants of compressible/incompressible Maxwell/Oldroyd-B models with a stress diffusion term in the evolution equation for the extra stress tensor. It is shown that the stress diffusion term can be interpreted either as a consequence of a nonlocal energy storage mechanism or as a consequence of a nonlocal entropy production mechanism, while different interpretations of the stress diffusion mechanism lead to different evolution equations for the temperature. The benefit…
A good representation of mesoscopic fluids is required to combine with molecular simulations at larger length and time scales (De Fabritiis {\it et. al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 134501 (2006)). However, accurate computational models of the hydrodynamics of nanoscale molecular assemblies are lacking, at least in part because of the stochastic character of the underlying fluctuating hydrodynamic equations. Here we derive a finite volume discretization of the compressible isothermal fluctuating hydrodynamic equations over a regular grid in the Eulerian reference system. We apply it to fluids such as…
