We extend our POWLANG transport setup for the modelling of heavy-flavour production in heavy-ion collisions to the case of full 3+1 simulations, dropping the approximation of longitudinal boost-invariance of the background medium. This enables us to provide predictions for observables for which the rapidity dependence is essential in order to obtain a non-vanishing signal, like the directed flow $v_1$, and to get reliable results also for kinematic distributions of heavy-flavour particles at forward rapidity. We compare our predictions with experimental data obtained in Au-Au and Pb-Pb collisions at RHIC and at the LHC.
We study the dependence of parton energy loss (quenching) on rapidity in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC. This can provides invaluable information on the density of the medium, which should be more dilute going away from mid-rapidity, thereby reducing the effect of quenching. We predict a clear effect at moderate transverse momenta $\sim$ 3 GeV.
We discuss modification in the rapidity distribution of the transverse energy flow as a signal of medium-induced partonic energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. A scan of the global energy flow and jet rates in the wide rapidity region might provide the important information about the pseudo-rapidity size of a dense medium created in heavy ion collisions at the LHC.
We present results for the quenching, elliptic flow and azimuthal correlations of heavy flavour particles in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions obtained through the POWLANG transport setup, developed in the past to study the propagation of heavy quarks in the Quark-Gluon Plasma and here extended to include a modeling of their hadronization in the presence of a medium. Hadronization is described as occurring via the fragmentation of strings with endpoints given by the heavy (anti-)quark Q(Qbar) and a thermal parton $qbar(q)$ from the medium. The flow of the light quarks is shown to affect s…
The suppression of high transverse momentum (P_T) jets and hadrons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to a p-p baseline in terms of the nuclear suppression factor R_AA is one of the key observables to gauge the density of a hot and dense QCD medium. However, the suppression measured by R_AA is not a straightforward measure of the medium properties, the value of the observable also depends on the ratio of quark to gluon jets and on the slope of the hard parton spectrum, which explains why R_AA is found to be fairly similar at RHIC and LHC despite the very different dynamics.…

The jet shape modification due to partonic energy loss in the dense QCD matter is investigated by the help of the special transverse energy-energy correlator in the vicinity of maximum energy deposition of every event. In the accepted scenario with scattering of jet hard partons off comoving medium constituents this correlator is independent of the pseudorapidity position of a jet axis and becomes considerably broader (symmetrically over the pseudorapidity and the azimuthal angle) in comparison with $pp$-collisions. At scattering off "slow" medium constituents the broadening of correlation fun…
Reconstructed jets initiated from heavy quarks provide a powerful tool to probe the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and to explore the mass hierarchy of jet quenching. In this article, we review the recent theoretical progresses on heavy-flavour jets in high-energy nuclear collisions at the RHIC and LHC. We focus on the yields and substructures of charm and bottom quark jets with jet quenching effect, such as the nuclear modification factors, transverse momentum imbalance, angular correlation, radial profiles, fragmentation functions, the "dead-cone" effect, etc.
I examine the role of final state interactions in cold nuclear matter in modifying hadron production on nuclear targets with leptonic or hadronic beams. I demonstrate the extent to which available experimental data in electron-nucleus collisions can give direct information on final state effects in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. For hadron-nucleus collisions, a theoretical estimate based on a parton energy loss model tested in lepton-nucleus collisions shows a large effect on mid-rapidity hadrons at fixed target experiments. At RHIC energy, the effect is large for negative rapi…
In ALICE, open heavy-flavour production is studied through the measurements of the leptons (electrons and muons) from heavy-flavour hadron decays at central and forward rapidity and via the reconstruction of D-meson hadronic decays at mid-rapidity. An overview of the open heavy-flavour production with ALICE in pp ($\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV), p--Pb ($\sqrt {s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV) and Pb--Pb ($\sqrt {s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV) collisions will be presented. We will discuss the production cross sections, modifications of the transverse momentum distributions, azimuthal anisotropic emissions …
Longitudinal dynamics of particle production and rapidity-dependent jet energy loss are investigated in small and asymmetric colliding systems. We utilize an improved version of \textsc{martini} in which two improvements are implemented to calculate the effect of the strongly coupled QGP droplet on jet energy loss. We show that those realistic prescriptions improve the results of nuclear modification factor calculations. We also observe visible energy loss of jets in a thermal background of high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions, and a clear correlation between the energy loss and elliptic flow coe…
In AA collisions fusion and percolation of colour strings is studied at fixed rapidity $y$. Distribution of strings in rapidity is obtained from the observed rapidity spectra in pp collisions. For $y$-dependence of multiplicities in Au-Au collisions good agreement is obtained with the existing experimental data. Predictions for LHC energies coincide with the extrapolation of the data. Agreement with the data of the transverse momentum spectra requires introduction of quenching into the model.
In this article we investigate how the energy and momentum deposited by partonic dijets in the quark-gluon plasma may perturb the geometry-induced hydrodynamic expansion of the bulk nuclear matter created in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. The coupling between the jets and the medium is done through a source term in the energy-momentum conservation equations for ideal hydrodynamics. We concentrate our attention at mid-rapidity and solve the equations event-by-event imposing boost-invariance. For $p_T \gtrsim 1$ GeV the anisotropic flow is found to be considerably enhanced, if the dijets deposit …
Soft-hadron measurements in high-energy collisions of small systems like p-Pb and d-Au show peculiar qualitative features (long-range rapidity correlations, flattening of the $p_T$-spectra with increasing hadron mass and centrality, non-vanishing Fourier harmonics in the azimuthal particle distributions) suggestive of the formation of a strongly-interacting medium displaying a collective behaviour, with a hydrodynamic flow as a response to the pressure gradients in the initial conditions. Hard observables (high-$p_T$ jet and hadron spectra) on the other hand, within the current large systemati…
We present an analysis of data on light flavour hadron production as function of event multiplicity at LHC energies measured by the ALICE collaboration. The strangeness-canonical approach within the framework of the THERMUS statistical hadronisation model is used for a simultaneous description of pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions. The rapidity window dependence of the strangeness correlation volume is addressed and a value of $Δy = 1.33 \pm 0.28$ is found. With the exception of the $ϕ$-meson, an excellent description of the experimental data is found.
The final state energy loss of fast partons penetrating a longitudinally expanding quark-gluon plasma of effective gluon rapidity density $dN^{g}/dy=650-800$ is evaluated and incorporated together with the multiple initial state Cronin scattering in the lowest order perturbative QCD hadron production formalism. Predictions for the neutral pion attenuation in central $Au+Au$ collisions at the intermediate RHIC energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=62$ GeV relative to the binary collision scaled $p+p$ result are given. The quenching is found to be a factor of 2-3 with a moderate transverse momentum dependenc…
We propose a new framework, merging High Energy Factorization with final-state jet quenching effects due to interactions in a quark-gluon plasma, to compute di-jet rates at mid- and forward rapidity. It allows to consistently study the interplay of initial-state effects with medium interactions, opening the possibility for understanding the dynamics of hard probes in heavy-ion collisions and the QGP evolution in rapidity.
High transverse momentum single (non-photonic) electrons are shown to be sensitive to the stopping power of both bottom, b, and charm, c, quarks in AA collisions. We apply the DGLV theory of radiative energy loss to predict c and b quark jet quenching and compare the FONLL and PYTHIA heavy flavor fragmentation and decay schemes. We show that single electrons in the p_T=5-10 GeV range are dominated by the decay of b quarks rather than the more strongly quenched c quarks in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s}=200 AGeV. The {smaller} b quark energy loss, even for extreme opacities with gluon rapidity den…
We develop the pQCD description of diffraction excitation of heavy flavours in DIS and we derive the analytic formulas for the mass spectrum in leading log$m_f^{2}$. The result illustrates nicely non-factorization properties of the QCD pomeron. We predict a very steep rise of the charm content of diffraction dissociation of photons at small $x_{\Pom}$. We evaluate the contribution of open charm to scaling violations in the structure function of the pomeron.
The suppression of hadron p_T spectra in high energy central heavy-ion collisions compared to proton-proton collisions, referred to as 'jet-quenching', is currently attributed to partonic energy loss in the hot medium created in the collision. The RHIC experiments show that at large enough p_T, hadron quenching is strong, and of similar magnitude for light and heavy flavours. This point is difficult to understand in a parton energy loss scenario, where the energy loss is believed to be dominantly radiative, and quantitatively different for light partons and heavy quarks: gluon radiation off a …
We study inclusive b-hadron production in pp collisions at the LHC at different center-of-mass energies and compare with experimental data from the LHCb and CMS collaborations. Our predictions for cross sections differential in the transverse momentum and (pseudo-)rapidity agree with data within uncertainties due to renormalization scale variations. A small tension is found if data and theory predictions are compared for cross section ratios at different center-of-mass energies.
The quenching of jets (particles with $p_T>>T, Λ_{QCD}$) in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions has been one of the main prediction and discovery at RHIC. We have studied, by a simple jet quenching modeling, the correlation between different observables like the nuclear modification factor $\Rapt$, the elliptic flow $v_2$ and the ratio of quark to gluon suppression $R_{AA}(quark)/R_{AA}(gluon)$. We show that the relation among these observables is strongly affected by the temperature dependence of the energy loss. In particular the large $v_2$ and and the nearly equal $\Rapt$ of quarks and…
A complete next-to-leading order calculation of longitudinally polarized heavy quark photoproduction is presented. All results of the purturbative calculation are given in detail. For reactions and energies of interest cross sections differential in the transverse momentum and rapidity of the heavy quark, total cross sections and the corresponding asymmetries are given. Errors in the asymmetries are estimated and the possibility to distinguish between various scerarios of the polarized gluon distribution is discussed. Our results are compared with other related publications.
In this paper we investigate how the energy and momentum deposited by partonic dijets in the quark-gluon plasma may affect the direct, elliptic and triangular flow of low (and intermediate) $p_T$ hadrons in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The dijets are modeled as external sources in the energy-momentum conservation equations for hydrodynamics, which are solved on an event-by-event basis within the ideal fluid approximation. We focus our investigation at mid-rapidity and solve the hydrodynamic equations imposing boost invariance. Differential anisotropic flow coefficients for $p_T \gtrsim 1$…
The rapidity-even dipolar flow v1 associated with dipole asymmetry in the initial geometry is measured over a broad range in transverse momentum 0.5 GeV<pT<9 GeV, and centrality (0-50)% in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The v1 coefficient is determined via a two-component fit of the first order Fourier coefficient, v_{1,1}= cos Δϕ, of two-particle correlations in azimuthal angle Δϕ=ϕ_a-ϕ_b as a function of pT^a and pT^b. This fit is motivated by the finding that the pT dependence of v_{1,1}(pT^a,pT^b) data are consistent with the combined …
We calculate the next-to-leading-order cross section for the inclusive production of $Λ_b$ baryons in pp collisions in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme. We use realistic evolved non-perturbative fragmentation functions obtained from fits to B-meson production in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation and compare our results for transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions with recent experimental data from the CMS and the LHCb collaborations at the CERN LHC. We find satisfactory agreement in general, with some indication for the need to modify the available fragmentation functions at larger va…
We extend the k_\perp-factorization formalism for exclusive photoproduction of vector mesons to the production of electroweak Z^0 bosons. Predictions for the gamma p \to Z^0 p and p p \to p p Z^0 reactions are given using an unintegrated gluon distribution tested against deep inelastic data. We present distributions in the Z^0 rapidity, transverse momentum of Z^0 as well as in relative azimuthal angle between outgoing protons. The contributions of different flavours are discussed. Absorption effects lower the cross section by a factor of 1.5-2, depending on the Z-boson rapidity. We also discus…
Results from a phenomenological analysis for diffractive hadroproduction of heavy flavors at high energies are reported. Diffractive production of charm, bottom and top are calculated using Regge factorization, taking into account recent experimental determination of the diffractive parton density functions in Pomeron by the H1 Collaboration at DESY-HERA. In addition, multiple-Pomeron corrections are considered through the rapidity gap survival probability factor. We give numerical predictions for single diffractive as well as double Pomeron exchange (DPE) cross sections, which agree with the …
We present a first calculation of the heavy flavor contribution to the longitudinally polarized DIS structure function $g_1$, differential in the transverse momentum or the rapidity of the observed heavy antiquark $\overline{Q}$. All results are obtained at next-to-leading order accuracy with a newly developed parton-level Monte Carlo generator that also allows one to study observables associated with the heavy quark pair such as its invariant mass distribution or its correlation in azimuthal angle. First phenomenological studies are presented in a kinematic regime relevant for a future Electr…
The ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ring is designed to study the strongly interacting matter at extreme energy densities created in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. In this paper we investigate correlations of heavy and light flavours in simulations at LHC energies at mid-rapidity, with the primary purpose of proposing experimental application of these methods. Our studies have shown that investigating the correlation images can aid the experimental separation of heavy quarks and help understanding the physics that create them. The shape of the correlation peaks can be us…
Results are presented from a phenomenological analysis of recent measurements of jet suppression and modifications of jet fragmentation functions in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. Particular emphasis is placed on the impact of the differences between quark and gluon jet quenching on the transverse momentum ($p_{T}^{jet}$) dependence of the jet $R_{AA}$ and on the fragmentation functions, $D(z)$. Primordial quark and gluon parton distributions were obtained from PYTHIA8 and were parameterized using simple power-law functions and extensions to the power-law function which were found to better desc…
Parton propagation in dense nuclear matter results in elastic, inelastic and coherent multiple soft scattering with the in-medium color charges. Such scattering leads to calculable modifications of the hadron production cross section that is evaluated in the framework of the perturbative QCD factorization approach. Final state medium-induced gluon bremsstrahlung is arguably the most efficient way of suppressing large transverse momentum particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The observed hadronic attenuation, known as jet quenching, can be related to the properties of the medium, s…
The prediction of differential cross-sections in hadron-hadron scattering processes is typically performed in a scheme where the heavy-flavour quarks ($c, b, t$) are treated either as massless or massive partons. In this work, a method to describe the production of colour-singlet processes which combines these two approaches is presented. The core idea is that the contribution from power corrections involving the heavy-quark mass can be numerically isolated from the rest of the massive computation. These power corrections can then be combined with a massless computation (where they are absent)…
We study the apparent discrepancy between the standard PQCD predictions for the meson and baryon ratios and multiplicities at moderate high $p_{T} > 2$ GeV and recent experimental measurements in $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}=130$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We show that the differences, most pronounced in central collisions, can be explained by a strong non-perturbative baryon Junction component, which dominates the currently accessible experimental $p_{T}$ window and the non-abelian energy loss of fast partons propagating through hot and dense medium. The recent…
High-energy logarithmic correction are enhanced when the ratio, $x = \frac{Q^2}{s}$ between the typical energy scale of a scattering process $Q$ and the total centre of mass energy available $s$ is small. We discuss recent developments on their resummation in differential cross sections in rapidity, transverse momentum and invariant mass and their application to heavy flavour production at the LHC.
The effects of heavy quarks energy loss on the transverse momentum spectra of single muons are studied. The energy loss of heavy quarks when traversing the medium formed in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$=5.5 TeV is calculated by implementing the collision geometry and the quenching weights. The medium density is assumed to decrease at forward pseudo-rapidity and to be proportional with pseudo-rapidity multiplicity $dN/dη$. Muons from W decays can be used as a medium-blind reference to quantify the effect of heavy quarks energy loss on the single muon production.
We calculate differential cross sections for $c \bar c$- and $b \bar b$-dijet production in $pp$-scattering at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV in the $k_T$-factorization and hybrid approaches with different unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDFs). We present distributions in transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the leading jet, rapidity difference between the jets and the dijet invariant mass. Our results are compared to recent LHCb data on forward production of heavy flavour dijets, measured recently for the first time individually for both, charm and bottom flavours. We found that an agr…
We study the effects on multigluon production at mid-rapidity in the Color Glass Condensate of the non-eikonal corrections that stem from relaxing the shockwave approximation and giving the target a finite size. We extend previous works performed in the dilute-dilute approximation suitable for proton-proton collisions, to the dilute-dense one applicable to proton-nucleus. We employ the McLerran-Venugopalan model for the projectile averages. For the target averages, we use the Golec-Biernat--Wüsthoff model and restrict to the leading contributions in overlap area that allow a factorization of e…
Open heavy flavour production at $e^+e^-$ colliders in deeply inelastic $eγ$ scattering has an interesting feature: the structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ for this process is calculable for $x>0.01$, and is essentially proportional to the gluon density in the photon for smaller $x$ values. We give estimates for event rates at LEP2 and a Next Linear Collider in $x,Q^2$ bins, and present differential distributions in the transverse momentum and rapidity of the heavy quark for the case of charm. We include all next-to-leading-order QCD corrections, and find theoretical uncertainties are well under c…
Calculations for processes involving a high multiplicity of coloured particles often employ a leading colour approximation, where only the leading terms in the expansion of the number of colours $N_c$ and the number of flavours $n_f$ are retained. This approximation of the full colour result is motivated by the $1/N_c^2$ suppression of the first subleading terms and by the increasing complexity of including subleading colour contributions to the calculation. In this work, we present the calculations using the antenna subtraction method in the NNLOJET framework for the NNLO QCD corrections at f…

We consider the production of open charm in heavy ion collisions in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate. In the central rapidity region at RHIC, for the charm quark yield we expect N(coll) (number of collisions) scaling in the absence of final-state effects. At higher energies, or forward rapidities at RHIC, the saturation scale exceeds the charm quark mass; we find that this results in the approximate N(part) (number of participants) scaling of charm production in AA collisions and N(part)^A scaling in p(d)A collisions, similarly to the production of high pT gluons discussed earlier. …
The next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive production of charm quarks in gamma-gamma collisions is calculated as a function of the transverse momentum pT and the rapidity y in approaches using massive or massless charm quarks. For the direct cross section we derive the massless limit from the massive theory with the result that this limit differs from the massless version with MSbar factorization by finite corrections. Subtracting or adding these corrections allows us to compare the two approaches on equal footing. We establish massless and massive versions with 3 and 4 initial …
We study the nuclear modification factors RAA and RCP of the high transverse momentum 5<pt<60 GeV/c distribution of muons in Pb--Pb collisions at LHC energies. We consider two pseudo-rapidity ranges covered by the LHC experiments: $|η|<2.5$ and $2.5<η<4$. Muons from semi-leptonic decays of heavy quarks (c and b) and from leptonic decays of weak gauge bosons (W and Z) are the main contributions to the muon pt distribution above a few GeV/c. We compute the heavy quark contributions using available pQCD-based programs. We include the nuclear shadowing modification of the parton distribution funct…
The next--to--leading order inclusive cross section for large-$p_\perp$ photoproduction of charm quarks at HERA is calculated in two different approaches. In the first approach the charm quarks are treated as massive objects which are strictly external to the proton and the photon while in the second approach the charm mass is neglected and the $c$ quark is assumed to be one of the active flavours in the proton and photon structure functions. We present single-inclusive distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity including direct and resolved photons. The cross section in the massless ap…
We consider single-diffractive (SD) Higgs production in association with heavy flavour in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The main focus of our study is a reliable estimate of SD/inclusive ratio, not a precision computation of the cross sections. The calculations are performed within the framework of the phenomenological dipole approach, which includes by default the absorptive corrections, i.e. the gap survival effects at the amplitude level. The dominant mechanism is the diffractive production of heavy quarks, which radiate a Higgs boson (Higgsstrahlung). Although diffractive production…
