We implement stacked denoising autoencoders, a class of neural networks that are capable of learning powerful representations of high dimensional data. We describe stochastic gradient descent for unsupervised training of autoencoders, as well as a novel genetic algorithm based approach that makes use of gradient information. We analyze the performance of both optimization algorithms and also the representation learning ability of the autoencoder when it is trained on standard image classification datasets.

We present a representation learning method that learns features at multiple different levels of scale. Working within the unsupervised framework of denoising autoencoders, we observe that when the input is heavily corrupted during training, the network tends to learn coarse-grained features, whereas when the input is only slightly corrupted, the network tends to learn fine-grained features. This motivates the scheduled denoising autoencoder, which starts with a high level of noise that lowers as training progresses. We find that the resulting representation yields a significant boost on a lat…

Despite the recent developments that allowed neural networks to achieve impressive performance on a variety of applications, these models are intrinsically affected by the problem of overgeneralization, due to their partitioning of the full input space into the fixed set of target classes used during training. Thus it is possible for novel inputs belonging to categories unknown during training or even completely unrecognizable to humans to fool the system into classifying them as one of the known classes, even with a high degree of confidence. Solving this problem may help improve the security…

Using the basic discriminating autoencoder as a unit, we build a stacked architecture aimed at extracting relevant representation from the training data. The efficiency of our feature extraction algorithm ensures a high classification accuracy with even simple classification schemes like KNN (K-nearest neighbor). W…

In this work we propose an autoencoder based framework for simultaneous reconstruction and classification of biomedical signals. Previously these two tasks, reconstruction and classification were treated as separate problems. This is the first work to propose a combined framework to address the issue in a holistic fashion. Reconstruction techniques for biomedical signals for tele-monitoring are largely based on compressed sensing (CS) based method, these are designed techniques where the reconstruction formulation is based on some assumption regarding the signal. In this work, we propose a new…

Gravitational wave astronomy is a rapidly growing field of modern astrophysics, with observations being made frequently by the LIGO detectors. Gravitational wave signals are often extremely weak and the data from the detectors, such as LIGO, is contaminated with non-Gaussian and non-stationary noise, often containing transient disturbances which can obscure real signals. Traditional denoising methods, such as principal component analysis and dictionary learning, are not optimal for dealing with this non-Gaussian noise, especially for low signal-to-noise ratio gravitational wave signals. Furthe…
Measuring similarities between strings is central for many established and fast growing research areas including information retrieval, biology, and natural language processing. The traditional approach for string similarity measurements is to define a metric over a word space that quantifies and sums up the differences between characters in two strings. The state-of-the-art in the area has, surprisingly, not evolved much during the last few decades. The majority of the metrics are based on a simple comparison between character and character distributions without consideration for the context …

While deep neural networks have been shown to perform remarkably well in many machine learning tasks, labeling a large amount of ground truth data for supervised training is usually very costly to scale. Therefore, learning robust representations with unlabeled data is critical in relieving human effort and vital for many downstream tasks. Recent advances in unsupervised and self-supervised learning approaches for visual data have benefited greatly from domain knowledge. Here we are interested in a more generic unsupervised learning framework that can be easily generalized to other domains. In…

This letter introduces a new denoiser that modifies the structure of denoising autoencoder (DAE), namely noise learning based DAE (nlDAE). The proposed nlDAE learns the noise of the input data. Then, the denoising is performed by subtracting the regenerated noise from the noisy input. Hence, nlDAE is more effective than DAE when the noise is simpler to regenerate than the original data. To validate the performance of nlDAE, we provide three case studies: signal restoration, symbol demodulation, and precise localization. Numerical results suggest that nlDAE requires smaller latent space dimensi…
The term blind denoising refers to the fact that the basis used for denoising is learnt from the noisy sample itself during denoising. Dictionary learning and transform learning based formulations for blind denoising are well known. But there has been no autoencoder based solution for the said blind denoising approach. So far autoencoder based denoising formulations have learnt the model on a separate training data and have used the learnt model to denoise test samples. Such a methodology fails when the test image (to denoise) is not of the same kind as the models learnt with. This will be fir…

Training a denoising autoencoder neural network requires access to truly clean data, a requirement which is often impractical. To remedy this, we introduce a method to train an autoencoder using only noisy data, having examples with and without the signal class of interest. The autoencoder learns a partitioned representation of signal and noise, learning to reconstruct each separately. We illustrate the method by denoising birdsong audio (available abundantly in uncontrolled noisy datasets) using a convolutional autoencoder.

This is due to the excessive growth of the network and its exposure to a plethora of people. The standard methods used to detect intrusions are not promising and have significant failure to identify new malware. Moreover, the challenges in handling high volume data with sparsity, high false positives, fewer detection rates in minor class, training time and feature engineering of the dimensionality of data has promoted deep learning to take over the task with less t…
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have become predominant in image generation tasks. Their success is attributed to the training regime which employs two models: a generator G and discriminator D that compete in a minimax zero sum game. Nonetheless, GANs are difficult to train due to their sensitivity to hyperparameter and parameter initialisation, which often leads to vanishing gradients, non-convergence, or mode collapse, where the generator is unable to create samples with different variations. In this work, we propose a novel Generative Adversarial Stacked Convolutional Autoencoder(GA…

Image denoising based on a probabilistic model of local image patches has been employed by various researchers, and recently a deep (denoising) autoencoder has been proposed by Burger et al. In this paper, we propose that another popular family of models in the field of deep learning, called Boltzmann machines, can perform image denoising as well as, or in certain cases of high level of noise, better than denoising autoencoders. We empirically evaluate the two models on three different sets of images with different types and levels of nois…

Deep neural networks are capable of modelling highly non-linear functions by capturing different levels of abstraction of data hierarchically. While training deep networks, first the system is initialized near a good optimum by greedy layer-wise unsupervised pre-training. However, with burgeoning data and increasing dimensions of the architecture, the time complexity of this approach becomes enormous. Also, greedy pre-training of the layers often turns detrimental by over-training a layer causing it to lose harmony with the rest of the network. In this paper a synchronized parallel algorithm f…

Unsupervised learning is of growing interest because it unlocks the potential held in vast amounts of unlabelled data to learn useful representations for inference. Autoencoders, a form of generative model, may be trained by learning to reconstruct unlabelled input data from a latent representation space. More robust representations may be produced by an autoencoder if it learns to recover clean input samples from corrupted ones. Representations may be further improved by introducing regularisation during training to shape the distribution of the encoded data in latent space. We suggest denois…

Approximating distributions over complicated manifolds, such as natural images, are conceptually attractive. The deep latent variable model, trained using variational autoencoders and generative adversarial networks, is now a key technique for representation learning. However, it is difficult to unify these two models for exact latent-variable inference and parallelize both reconstruction and sampling, partly due to the regularization under the latent variables, to match a simple explicit prior distribution. These approaches are prone to be oversimplified, and can only characterize a few modes…
