A set of unified relativistic mean-field equations of state for hyperonic compact stars recently built in [M. Fortin, Ad. R. Raduta, S. Avancini, and C. Providencia, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 101}, 034017 (2020)] is used to study the thermal evolution of non-magnetized and non-rotating spherically-symmetric isolated and accreting neutron stars under different hypothesis concerning proton $S$-wave superfluidity.
These equations of state have been obtained in the following way: the slope of the symmetry energy is in agreement with experimental data; the coupling constants of $Λ$ and $Ξ$-hyperons are determined from experimental hypernuclear data; uncertainties in the nucleon-$Σ$ interaction potential are accounted for; current constraints on the lower bound of the maximum neutron star mass are satisfied.
Within the considered set of equations of state, the presence of hyperons is essential for the description of the cooling/heating curves.
One of the conclusions we reach is that the criterion of best agreement with observational data leads to different equations of states and proton $S$-wave superfluidity gaps when applied separately for isolated neutron stars and accreting neutron stars in quiescence.
This means that at least in one situation the traditional simulation framework that we employ is not complete and/or the equations of state are inappropriate.
Another result is that, considering equations of state which do not allow for nucleonic dUrca or allow for it only in very massive NS, the low luminosity of SAX J1808 requires a repulsive $Σ$-hyperon potential in symmetric nuclear matter in the range $U_Σ^{(N)}\approx 10-30$ MeV. This range of values for $U_Σ^{(N)} $ is also supported by the criterion of best agreement with all available data from INS and XRT.
We present a systematic study of $f$-mode oscillations in neutron stars containing hyperons, extending recent results obtained within the Cowling approximation to linearized General Relativity. Employing a relativistic mean field model, we find that the Cowling approximation can overestimate the quadrupolar $f$-mode frequency of neutron stars by up to 30\% compared to the frequency obtained in the linearized general relativistic formalism. Imposing current astrophysical constraints, we derive updated empirical relations for gravitational wave asteroseismology. The frequency and damping time of…
The neutron star as a supernova remnant is attracting high attention recently due to the gravitation wave detection and precise measurements about its mass and radius. In the inner core region of the neutron star, the strangeness degrees of freedom, such as the hyperons, can be present, which is also named as a hyperonic star. In this work, the neutron star consisting of nucleons and leptons, and the hyperonic star including the hyperons will be reviewed in the framework of the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. The popular non-linear and density-dependent RMF parametrizations in the market …
We review the composition and the equation of state of the hyperonic core of neutron stars at finite temperature within a relativistic mean-field approach. We make use of the new FSU2H* model, which is built upon the FSU2H scheme by improving on the Xi potential according to the recent analysis on the Xi atoms, and we extend it to include finite temperature corrections. The calculations are done for a wide range of densities, temperatures and charge fractions, thus exploring the different conditions that can be found in protoneutron stars, binary mergers remnants and supernovae explosions. The…
Chiral Lagrangian and quark-meson coupling models of hyperon matter are used to estimate the maximum mass of neutron stars. Our relativistic calculations include, for the first time, both Hartree and Fock contributions in a consistent manner. Being related to the underlying quark structure of baryons, these models are considered to be good candidates for describing the dense core of neutron stars. Taking account of the known experimental constraints at saturation density, the equations of state deduced from these relativistic approaches cannot sustain a neutron star with a mass larger than 1.6…
In the present study we analyse the effect of the density dependence of the symmetry energy on the hyperonic content of neutron stars within a relativistic mean field description of stellar matter. For the $Λ$-hyperon, we consider parametrizations calibrated to $Λ$-hypernuclei. For the $Σ$ and $Ξ$-hyperons uncertainties that reflect the present lack of experimental information on $Σ$ and $Ξ$-hypernuclei are taken into account. We perform our study considering nuclear equations of state that predict two solar mass stars, and satisfy other well settled nuclear matter properties. The effect of th…
Neutron dripline calculations for both magnesium nuclei and magnesium + $Λ$ hypernuclei have been carried out in a microscopic framework using a chiral effective model. The results are compared with two other relativistic mean field models, SPL-40 and NL3. All three models describe the $Λ$ separation energy of known hypernuclei adequately. The extrapolation to the driplines for moderately heavy hypernuclei are found to be strongly model-dependent.
In the framework of relativistic mean field theory, the relativistic neutrino emissivity of the nucleonic and hyperonic direct Urca processes in the degenerate baryon matter of neutron stars are studied. We investigate particularly the influence of the isovector scalar interaction which is considered by exchanging $δ$ meson on the nucleonic and hyperonic direct Urca processes. The results indicate that $δ$ mesons lead to obvious enhancement of the total neutrino emissivity, which must result in more rapid cooling rate of neutron star matter.

The vacuum fluctuation (VF) effects on the properties of the hyperonic neutron star matter are investigated in the framework of the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. The VF corrections result in the density dependence of in-medium baryon and meson masses. We compare our results obtained by adopting three kinds of meson-hyperon couplings. The introduction of both hyperons and VF corrections soften the equation of state (EoS) for the hyperonic neutron star matter and hence reduce hyperonic neutron star masses. The presence of the $δ$ field enlarges the masses and radii of hyperonic neutron s…
The $^{1}S_{0}$ nucleonic superfluids are investigated within the relativistic mean-field model and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory in hyperonic neutron stars. The $^{1}S_{0}$ pairing gaps of neutrons and protons are calculated based on the Reid soft-core interaction as the nucleon-nucleon interaction. We have studied particularly the influence of hyperons degrees of freedom on the $^{1}S_{0}$ nucleonic pairing gap in neutron star matter. It is found that the appearance of hyperons has little impact on baryonic density range and size for the $^{1}S_{0}$ neutronic pairing gap, the $^{1}S_{0}$ …
We develop a new relativistic mean field (RMF) model including explicit three-body couplings and apply it to hyperonic systems and neutron star matter. The recent observation of the massive mass neutron star has given us a puzzle; when strange hadrons including hyperons are taken into account, the equation of state (EOS) becomes too soft to support the observed two-solar-mass neutron star. Three-baryon repulsion is a promising ingredient to answer this puzzle. We demonstrate that it is possible to consistently explain the massive neutron star and hypernuclear data when we include three-body co…
We perform cooling simulations for isolated neutron stars using recently developed equations of state for their core. The equations of state are obtained from new parametrizations of the FSU2 relativistic mean-field functional that reproduce the properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei, while fulfilling the restrictions on high-density matter deduced from heavy-ion collisions, measurements of massive 2$M_{\odot}$ neutron stars, and neutron star radii below 13 km. We find that two of the models studied, FSU2R (with nucleons) and in particular FSU2H (with nucleons and hyperons), show very …
We study the effects of strong magnetic fields on the properties of hyperonic matter. We employ the relativistic mean field theory, which is known to provide excellent descriptions of nuclear matter and finite nuclei. The two additional hidden-strangeness mesons, $σ^{\ast}$ and $ϕ$, are taken into account, and some reasonable hyperon potentials are used to constrain the meson-hyperon couplings, which reflect the recent developments in hypernuclear physics. It is found that the effects of strong magnetic fields become significant only for magnetic field strength $B>5 \times 10^{18}$ G. The thre…
We consider transport properties of the hypernuclear matter in neutron star cores. In particular, we calculate the thermal conductivity, the shear viscosity, and the momentum transfer rates for np$Σ^{-}Λeμ$ composition of dense matter in $β$--equilibrium for baryon number densities in the range $0.1-1$~fm$^{-3}$. The calculations are based on baryon interactions treated within the framework of the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory. Bare nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions are described by the Argonne v18 phenomenological potential supplemented with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force.…
The recent discoveries of massive neutron stars, such as PSR J$0348+0432$ and PSR J$1614-2230$, have raised questions about the existence of exotic matter such as hyperons in the neutron star core. The validity of many established equations of states (EoS's) like the GM1 and FSUGold are also questioned. We investigate the existence of hyperonic matter in the central regions of massive neutron stars using Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) theory with the recently proposed IUFSU model. The IUFSU model is extended by including hyperons to study the neutron star in $β$ equilibrium. The effect of diffe…
We consider a rotating neutron star with the presence of hyperons in its core, using an equation of state in an effective chiral model within the relativistic mean field approximation. We calculate the hyperonic bulk viscosity coefficient due to nonleptonic weak interactions. By estimating the damping timescales of the dissipative processes, we investigate its role in the suppression of gravitationally driven instabilities in the $r$-mode. We observe that $r$-mode instability remains very much significant for hyperon core temperature of around $10^8 $K, resulting in a comparatively larger inst…
We obtain a new equation of state for the nucleonic and hyperonic inner core of neutron stars that fulfills the 2$M_{\odot}$ observations as well as the recent determinations of stellar radii below 13 km. The nucleonic equation of state is obtained from a new parametrization of the FSU2 relativistic mean-field functional that satisfies these latest astrophysical constraints and, at the same time, reproduces the properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei while fulfilling the restrictions on high-density matter deduced from heavy-ion collisions. On the one hand, the equation of state of neut…
We report a new equation of state (EoS) of cold and hot hyperonic matter constructed in the framework of the quark-meson-coupling (QMC-A) model. The QMC-A EoS yields results compatible with available nuclear physics constraints and astrophysical observations. It covers the range of temperatures from T=0 to 100 MeV, entropies per particle S/A between 0 and 6, lepton fractions from Y$_L$=0.0 to 0.6, and baryon number densities n$_B$=0.05-1.2 fm$^{-3}$. Applications of the QMC-A EoS are made to cold neutron stars (NS) and to hot proto-neutron stars (PNS) in two scenarios, (i) lepton rich matter w…
Within the covariant density functional theory of hypernuclear matter we build a series of equations of state for hypernuclear compact stars, by calibrating the coupling constants of the $Ξ$-hyperon to the experimental binding energy of the single-$Ξ$ hypernuclei $^{15}_{Ξ^-}$C and $^{12}_{Ξ^-}$Be. Coupling constants of the $Λ$-hyperon to nucleons have been calibrated on a vast collection of experimental data on single $Λ$-hypernuclei and we employ those values. Uncertainties on the couplings of the $Σ$-hyperon to nuclear matter, due to lack of experimental data, are accounted for by allowing …
Since 2013 the mass of pulsar PSR J0348+0432 ($M = 2.01\,M_{\odot}$) has provided a tight constraint on neutron star equation of state. However, a number of different analyses of the recently detected BNS merger (GW170817) point to a maximum neutron star mass around $2.16\,M_{\odot}$. In addition, a recent study determined the mass of the millisecond pulsar PSR J2215+5135 to be $2.27^{+0.17}_{-0.15}\,M_{\odot}$. In this work we investigate the presence of hyperons in neutron star matter in light of these new mass measurements using equations of state calculated in the relativistic mean-field a…
The hypernuclear matter is studied within the relativistic Hartree-Fock theory employing several parametrizations of the hypernuclear density functional with density-dependent couplings. The equations of state and compositions of hypernuclear matter are determined for each parametrization and compact stars are constructed by solving their structure equations in spherical symmetry. We quantify the softening effect of Fock terms on the equation of state, as well as discuss the impact of tensor interactions, which are absent in the Hartree theories. Starting from models of density functionals whi…
We systematically study the properties of pure nucleonic and hyperonic magnetic stars using a density-dependent relativistic mean field (DD-RMF) equations of state. We explore several parameter sets and hyperon coupling schemes within the DD-RMF formalism. We focus on sets that are in better agreement with nuclear and other astrophysical data, while generating heavy neutron stars. Magnetic field effects are included in the matter equation of state and in general relativity solutions, which in addition fulfill Maxwell's equations. We find that pure nucleonic matter, even without magnetic field …
Motivated by the recent observation of high-mass pulsars ($M \simeq 2 M_{\odot}$), we employ the $σ$-cut potential on the equation of state (EOS) of high-density matter and the properties of neutron stars within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model using TM1$^{*}$ parameter set. The $σ$-cut potential is known to reduce the contributions of the $σ$ field, resulting in a stiffer EOS at high densities and hence leading to larger neutron star masses without affecting the properties of nuclear matter at normal saturation density. We also analyzed the effect of the same on pure neutron matter and…
We study the effect of the nucleon-nucleon-lambda (NN$Λ$) three-body force on neutron stars. In particular, we consider the NN$Λ$ force recently derived by the Jülich--Bonn--Munich group within the framework of chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order. This force, together with realistic nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-hyperon interactions, is used to calculate the equation of state and the structure of neutron stars within the many-body non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. Our results show that the inclusion of the NN$Λ$ force leads to a…

The physics of neutron stars leads historically towards Landau's speculation. Even before the discovery of the neutron, he postulated the possible existence of stars more compact than white dwarfs, containing matter of the order of nuclear density. From a modern point of view neutron stars are compact objects maintained by the equilibrium between gravity and the degeneracy pressure of the fermions together with a strong nuclear repulsion force due to the high density reached in their interior. While the physics in the vicinity of nuclear saturation density is well know from phenomenology, the …
We present sets of equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter including hyperons using an SU_f(3) extended relativistic mean field (RMF) model with a wide coverage of density, temperature, and charge fraction for numerical simulations of core collapse supernovae. Coupling constants of Sigma and Xi hyperons with the sigma meson are determined to fit the hyperon potential depths in nuclear matter, U_Sigma(rho_0) ~ +30 MeV and U_Xi(rho_0) ~ -15 MeV, which are suggested from recent analyses of hyperon production reactions. At low densities, the EOS of uniform matter is connected with the EOS by She…
We propose and apply a new parameterization of the modified chiral effective model to study rotating neutron stars with hyperon cores in the framework of the relativistic mean-field theory. The inclusion of mesonic cross couplings in the model has improved the density content of the symmetry energy slope parameters, which are in agreement with the findings from recent terrestrial experiments. The bulk viscosity of the hyperonic medium is analyzed to investigate its role in the suppression of gravitationally driven $r$-modes. The hyperonic bulk viscosity coefficient caused by non-leptonic weak …

We compute the mass, radius and tidal deformability of stars containing phase transitions from hadronic to quark phase(s). These quantities are computed for three types of hadronic envelopes: purely nuclear, hyperonic, and $Δ$-resonance--hyperon admixed matter. We consider either a single first-order phase transition to a quark phase with a maximally stiff equation of state (EOS) or two sequential first-order phase transitions mimicking a transition from hadronic to a quark matter phase followed by a second phase transition to another quark phase. We explore the parameter space which produces …
We make a perturbative calculation of neutrino scattering and absorption in hot and dense hyperonic neutron-star matter in the presence of a strong magnetic Field. We calculate that the absorption cross-sections in a fully relativistic mean-field theory. We find that there is a remarkable angular dependence, i.e. the neutrino absorption strength is reduced in a direction parallel to the magnetic Field and enhanced in the opposite direction. This asymmetry in the neutrino absorption is estimated to be as much as 2.2 % of the entire neutrino momentum for an interior magnetic Field of 2 x 10^{17}…
The critical properties for the transition to warm, asymmetric, non-homogeneous nuclear matter are analysed within a thermodynamical spinodal approach for a set of well calibrated equations of state. It is shown that even though different equations of state are constrained by the same experimental, theoretical and observational data, and the properties of symmetric nuclear matter are similar within the models, the properties of very asymmetric nuclear matter, such as the one found inside of neutron stars, differ a lot for various models. Some models predict larger transition densities to homog…
We present numerical simulations of stellar core-collapse with spherically symmetric, general relativistic hydrodynamics up to black hole formation. Using the CoCoNuT code, with a newly developed grey leakage scheme for the neutrino treatment, we investigate the effects of including pions and Λ-hyperons into the equation of state at high densities and temperatures on the black hole formation process. Results show non-negligible differences between the models with reference equation of state without any additional particles and models with the extended ones. For the latter, the maximum masses s…
Within a density-dependent relativistic mean-field model using in-medium meson-hadron coupling constants and meson masses, we explore effects of in-medium hyperon interactions on properties of neutron stars. It is found that the hyperonic constituents in large-mass neutron stars can not be simply ruled out, while the recently measured mass of the millisecond pulsar J1614-2230 can constrain significantly the in-medium hyperon interactions. Moreover, effects of nuclear symmetry energy on hyperonization in neutron stars are also discussed.
We study the thermodynamical properties of compressed baryonic matter with strangeness within non-relativistic energy density functional models with a particular emphasis on possible phase transitions found earlier for a simple $n,p,e,Λ$-mixture. The aim of the paper is twofold: I) examining the phase structure of the complete system, including the full baryonic octet and II) testing the sensitivity of the results to the model parameters. We find that, associated to the onset of the different hyperonic families, up to three separate strangeness-driven phase transitions may occur. Consequently,…
We construct a set of hyperonic equations of state (EoS) by assuming SU(3) symmetry within the baryon octet and by using a covariant density functional (CDF) theory approach. The low-density regions of our EoS are constrained by terrestrial experiments, while the high-density regime is modeled by systematically varying the nuclear matter skewness coefficient $Q_{\rm sat}$ and the symmetry energy slope $L_{\rm sym}$. The sensitivity of the EoS predictions is explored in terms of $z$ parameter of the SU(3) symmetric model that modifies the meson-hyperon coupling constants away from their SU(6) s…
Hyperons are essential constituents in the neutron star interior. The poorly-known hyperonic interaction is a source of uncertainty for studying laboratory hypernuclei and neutron star observations. In this work, we perform Bayesian inference of phenomenological hyperon-nucleon interactions using the tidal-deformability measurement of the GW170817 binary neutron star merger as detected by LIGO/Virgo and the mass-radius measurements of PSR J0030+0541 and PSR J0740+6620 as detected by NICER. The analysis is based on a set of stiff relativistic neutron-star-matter equation of states with hyperons…
We study the key factor to determine the dimensionless spin parameter $j\equiv cJ/(GM^2)$ of different kinds of uniformly rotating compact stars, including the traditional neutron stars, hyperonic neutron stars, and hybrid stars, and check the reliability of the results on various types of equations of state of dense matter. The equations of state from the relativistic mean field theory and the MIT bag model are adopted to simulate compact stars. Numerical calculations of rigidly rotating neutron stars are performed using the RNS code in the framework of general relativity by solving the Einst…
We examine the influence of the density dependence of the symmetry energy on several properties of neutron stars. In particular, we study the constraints set on the nuclear matter equation of state by the values of the tidal deformability and neutron star radius, using a diverse set of relativistic and non-relativistic mean field models consistent with bulk properties of finite nuclei and the observed lower bound on the maximum mass of neutron star. The tidal deformability and radius show a strong correlation with specific linear combinations of the isoscalar and isovector nuclear matter param…
