Adding noises to artificial neural network(ANN) has been shown to be able to improve robustness in previous work. In this work, we propose a new technique to compute the pathwise stochastic gradient estimate with respect to the standard deviation of the Gaussian noise added to each neuron of the ANN. By our proposed technique, the gradient estimate with respect to noise levels is a byproduct of the backpropagation algorithm for estimating gradient with respect to synaptic weights in ANN. Thus, the noise level for each neuron can be optimized simultaneously in the processing of training the synaptic weights at nearly no extra computational cost. In numerical experiments, our proposed method can achieve significant performance improvement on robustness of several popular ANN structures under both black box and white box attacks tested in various computer vision datasets.

Deep learning is often criticized by two serious issues which rarely exist in natural nervous systems: overfitting and catastrophic forgetting. It can even memorize randomly labelled data, which has little knowledge behind the instance-label pairs. When a deep network continually learns over time by accommodating new tasks, it usually quickly overwrites the knowledge learned from previous tasks. Referred to as the {\it neural variability}, it is well-known in neuroscience that human brain reactions exhibit substantial variability even in response to the same stimulus. This mechanism balances a…
This paper presents the application of a newly developed nature-inspired metaheuristic optimization method, namely the Adaptive Wind Driven Optimization (AWDO), to the training of feedforward artificial neural networks (NN) and presents a discussion into the future research of AWDO implementation in Deep Learning (DL). Application example of digit classification with MNIST dataset reveals interesting behavior of the derivative-free AWDO method compared to steepest descent method where results and future work on the implementation of AWDO in deep neural networks are discussed.
In the present study, a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based Demand Response (DR) model, using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict load is proposed. The electrical load and climatological data of a residential area in Austin city in Texas are used as the inputs of the ANN. Then, the outcomes with the day-ahead prices data are used to solve the load shifting and cost reduction problem. According to the results, the proposed model has the ability to decrease payment costs and peak load.
Over-the-air computation has the potential to increase the communication-efficiency of data-dependent distributed wireless systems, but is vulnerable to eavesdropping. We consider over-the-air computation over block-fading additive white Gaussian noise channels in the presence of a passive eavesdropper. The goal is to design a secure over-the-air computation scheme. We propose a scheme that achieves MSE-security against the eavesdropper by employing zero-forced artificial noise, while keeping the distortion at the legitimate receiver small. In contrast to former approaches, the security does n…

Novel applications of artificial intelligence for tuning the parameters of industrial machines for optimal performance are emerging at a fast pace. Tuning the combine harvesters and improving the machine performance can dramatically minimize the wastes during harvesting, and it is also beneficial to machine maintenance. Literature includes several soft computing, machine learning and optimization methods that had been used to model the function of harvesters of various crops. Due to the complexity of the problem, machine learning methods had been recently proposed to predict the optimal perfor…

Many modern applications of the artificial neural networks ensue large number of layers making traditional digital implementations increasingly complex. Optical neural networks offer parallel processing at high bandwidth, but have the challenge of noise accumulation. We propose here a new type of neural networks using stochastic resonances as an inherent part of the architecture and demonstrate a possibility of significant reduction of the required number of neurons for a given performance accuracy. We also show that such a neural network is more robust against the impact of noise.
Parameter identification for marine ecosystem models is important for the assessment and validation of marine ecosystem models against observational data. The surrogate-based optimization (SBO) is a computationally efficient method to optimize complex models. SBO replaces the computationally expensive (high-fidelity) model by a surrogate constructed from a less accurate but computationally cheaper (low-fidelity) model in combination with an appropriate correction approach, which improves the accuracy of the low-fidelity model. To construct a computationally cheap low-fidelity model, we tested …
The paper discusses regularization properties of artificial data for deep learning. Artificial datasets allow to train neural networks in the case of a real data shortage. It is demonstrated that the artificial data generation process, described as injecting noise to high-level features, bears several similarities to existing regularization methods for deep neural networks. One can treat this property of artificial data as a kind of "deep" regularization. It is thus possible to regularize hidden layers of the network by generating the training data in a certain way.
We present a deep reinforcement learning-based artificial intelligence agent that could provide optimized development plans given a basic description of the reservoir and rock/fluid properties with minimal computational cost. This artificial intelligence agent, comprising of a convolutional neural network, provides a mapping from a given state of the reservoir model, constraints, and economic condition to the optimal decision (drill/do not drill and well location) to be taken in the next stage of the defined sequential field development planning process. The state of the reservoir model is def…
