This paper presents a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) approach for counting and locating objects in high-density imagery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first object counting and locating method based on a feature map enhancement and a Multi-Stage Refinement of the confidence map. The proposed method was evaluated in two counting datasets: tree and car. For the tree dataset, our method returned a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.05, a root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of 2.87 and a coefficient of determination (R$^2$) of 0.986. For the car dataset (CARPK and PUCPR+), our method was superior to state-of-the-art methods. In the these datasets, our approach achieved an MAE of 4.45 and 3.16, an RMSE of 6.18 and 4.39, and an R$^2$ of 0.975 and 0.999, respectively. The proposed method is suitable for dealing with high object-density, returning a state-of-the-art performance for counting and locating objects.
A novel and fast semi-automatic method for segmentation, locating and counting blood cells in an image is proposed. In this method, thresholding is used to separate the nucleus from the other parts. We also use Hough transform for circles to locate the center of white cells. Locating and counting of red cells is performed using template matching. We make use of finding local maxima, labeling and mean value computation in order to shrink the areas obtained after applying Hough transform or template matching, to a single pixel as representative of location of each region. The proposed method is …

Recent advances in convolutional neural networks (CNN) have achieved remarkable results in locating objects in images. In these networks, the training procedure usually requires providing bounding boxes or the maximum number of expected objects. In this paper, we address the task of estimating object locations without annotated bounding boxes which are typically hand-drawn and time consuming to label. We propose a loss function that can be used in any fully convolutional network (FCN) to estimate object locations. This loss function is a modification of the average Hausdorff distance between t…
In this paper, we investigate the use of Convolutional Neural Networks for counting the number of records in historical handwritten documents. With this work we demonstrate that training the networks only with synthetic images allows us to perform a near perfect evaluation of the number of records printed on historical documents. The experiments have been performed on a benchmark dataset composed by marriage records and outperform previous results on this dataset.
Crowd counting on static images is a challenging problem due to scale variations. Recently deep neural networks have been shown to be effective in this task. However, existing neural-networks-based methods often use the multi-column or multi-network model to extract the scale-relevant features, which is more complicated for optimization and computation wasting. To this end, we propose a novel multi-scale convolutional neural network (MSCNN) for single image crowd counting. Based on the multi-scale blobs, the network is able to generate scale-relevant features for higher crowd counting performa…

In this paper, we propose a method called Convolutional Neural Network-Markov Random Field (CNN-MRF) to estimate the crowd count in a still image. We first divide the dense crowd visible image into overlapping patches and then use a deep convolutional neural network to extract features from each patch image, followed by a fully connected neural network to regress the local patch crowd count. Since the local patches have overlapping portions, the crowd count of the adjacent patches has a high correlation. We use this correlation and the Markov random field to smooth the counting results of the …
In this paper we advance the state-of-the-art for crowd counting in high density scenes by further exploring the idea of a fully convolutional crowd counting model introduced by (Zhang et al., 2016). Applications for crowd counting systems exist in many diverse areas including city planning, retail, and of course general public safety. Developing a highly generalised counting model that can be deployed in any surveillance scenario with any camera …
In this paper, we investigate the problem of counting rosette leaves from an RGB image, an important task in plant phenotyping. We propose a data-driven approach for this task generalized over different plant species and imaging setups. To accomplish this task, we use state-of-the-art deep learning architectures: a deconvolutional network for initial segmentation and a convolutional network for leaf counting. Evaluation is performed on the leaf counting challenge dataset at CVPPP-2017. Despite the small number of training samples in this dataset, as compared to typical deep learning image sets…
Computer vision tasks often have side information available that is helpful to solve the task. For example, for crowd counting, the camera perspective (e.g., camera angle and height) gives a clue about the appearance and scale of people in the scene. While side information has been shown to be useful for counting systems using traditional hand-crafted features, it has not been fully utilized in counting systems based on deep learning. In order to incorporate the available side information, we propose an adaptive convolutional neural network (ACNN), where the convolutional filter weights adapt …
The estimation of crowd count in images has a wide range of applications such as video surveillance, traffic monitoring, public safety and urban planning. Recently, the convolutional neural network (CNN) based approaches have been shown to be more effective in crowd counting than traditional methods that use handcrafted features. However, the existing CNN-based methods still suffer from large number of parameters and large storage space, which require high storage and computing resources and thus limit the real-world application. Consequently, we propose a deeply-recursive network (DR-ResNet) …

Our work proposes a novel deep learning framework for estimating crowd density from static images of highly dense crowds. We use a combination of deep and shallow, fully convolutional networks to predict the density map for a given crowd image. Such a combination is used for effectively capturing both the high-level semantic information (face/body detectors) and the low-level features (blob detectors), that are necessary for crowd counting under large scale variations. As most crowd datasets have limited training samples (<100 images) and deep learning based approaches require large amounts of…
Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are the leading defacto method for crowd counting. However, when dealing with video datasets, CNN-based methods still process each video frame independently, thus ignoring the powerful temporal information between consecutive frames. In this work, we propose a novel architecture termed as "temporal channel-aware" (TCA) block, which achieves the capability of exploiting the temporal interdependencies among video sequences. Specifically, we incorporate 3D convolution kernels to encode local spatio-temporal features. Furthermore, the global contextua…
Over the past few years, researchers have presented many different applications for convolutional neural networks, including those for the detection and recognition of objects from images. The desire to understand our own nature has always been an important motivation for research. Thus, the visual recognition of humans is among the most important issues facing machine learning today. Most solutions for this task have been developed and tested by using several publicly available datasets. These datasets typically contain images taken from street-level closed-circuit television cameras offering…

High-density object counting in surveillance scenes is challenging mainly due to the drastic variation of object scales. The prevalence of deep learning has largely boosted the object counting accuracy on several benchmark datasets. However, does the global counts really count? Armed with this question we dive into the predicted density map whose summation over the whole regions reports the global counts for more in-depth analysis. We observe that the object density map generated by most existing methods usually lacks of local consistency, i.e., counting errors in local regions exist unexpecte…

Crowd management technologies that leverage computer vision are widespread in contemporary times. There exists many security-related applications of these methods, including, but not limited to: following the flow of an array of people and monitoring large gatherings. In this paper, we propose an accurate monitoring system composed of two concatenated convolutional deep learning architectures. The first part called Front-end, is responsible for converting bi-dimensional signals and delivering high-level features. The second part, called the Back-end, is a dilated Convolutional Neural Network (…
We propose a novel crowd counting model that maps a given crowd scene to its density. Crowd analysis is compounded by myriad of factors like inter-occlusion between people due to extreme crowding, high similarity of appearance between people and background elements, and large variability of camera view-points. Current state-of-the art approaches tackle these factors by using multi-scale CNN architectures, recurrent networks and late fusion of features from multi-column CNN with different receptive fields. We propose switching convolutional neural network that leverages variation of crowd densi…
Tremendous variation in the scale of people/head size is a critical problem for crowd counting. To improve the scale invariance of feature representation, recent works extensively employ Convolutional Neural Networks with multi-column structures to handle different scales and resolutions. However, due to the substantial redundant parameters in columns, existing multi-column networks invariably exhibit almost the same scale features in different columns, which severely affects counting accuracy and leads to overfitting. In this paper, we attack this problem by proposing a novel Multi-column Mut…
The task of crowd counting is to automatically estimate the pedestrian number in crowd images. To cope with the scale and perspective changes that commonly exist in crowd images, state-of-the-art approaches employ multi-column CNN architectures to regress density maps of crowd images. Multiple columns have different receptive fields corresponding to pedestrians (heads) of different scales. We instead propose a scale-adaptive CNN (SaCNN) architecture with a backbone of fixed small receptive fields. We extract feature maps from multiple layers and adapt them to have the same output size; we comb…
Counting people in dense crowds is a demanding task even for humans. This is primarily due to the large variability in appearance of people. Often people are only seen as a bunch of blobs. Occlusions, pose variations and background clutter further compound the difficulty. In this scenario, identifying a person requires larger spatial context and semantics of the scene. But the current state-of-the-art CNN regressors for crowd counting are feedforward and use only limited spatial context to detect people. They look for local crowd patterns to regress the crowd density map, resulting in false pr…
For crowded scenes, the accuracy of object-based computer vision methods declines when the images are low-resolution and objects have severe occlusions. Taking counting methods for example, almost all the recent state-of-the-art counting methods bypass explicit detection and adopt regression-based methods to directly count the objects of interest. Among regression-based methods, density map estimation, where the number of objects inside a subregion is the integral of the density map over that subregion, is especially promising because it preserves spatial information, which makes it useful for…
Estimating accurate and reliable fruit and vegetable counts from images in real-world settings, such as orchards, is a challenging problem that has received significant recent attention. Estimating fruit counts before harvest provides useful information for logistics planning. While considerable progress has been made toward fruit detection, estimating the actual counts remains challenging. In practice, fruits are often clustered together. Therefore, methods that only detect fruits fail to offer general solutions to estimate accurate fruit counts. Furthermore, in horticultural studies, rather …

Cell imaging and analysis are fundamental to biomedical research because cells are the basic functional units of life. Among different cell-related analysis, cell counting and detection are widely used. In this paper, we focus on one common step of learning-based cell counting approaches: coding the raw dot labels into more suitable maps for learning. Two criteria of coding raw dot labels are discussed, and a new coding scheme is proposed in this paper. The two criteria measure how easy it is to train the model with a coding scheme, and how robust the recovered raw dot labels are when predicti…

We propose the use of dilated filters to construct an aggregation module in a multicolumn convolutional neural network for perspective-free counting. Counting is a common problem in computer vision (e.g. traffic on the street or pedestrians in a crowd). Modern approaches to the counting problem involve the production of a density map via regression whose integral is equal to the number of objects in the image. However, objects in the image can occur at different scales (e.g. due to perspective effects) which can make it difficult for a learning agent to learn the proper density map. While the …

Pattern spotting consists of searching in a collection of historical document images for occurrences of a graphical object using an image query. Contrary to object detection, no prior information nor predefined class is given about the query so training a model of the object is not feasible. We use RetinaNet as a feature extractor to obtain multiscale embeddings of the regions of the documents and also for the queries. Experiments conducted on the DocExplore dataset show that our proposal is better at lo…
Locating discriminative parts plays a key role in fine-grained visual classification due to the high similarities between different objects. Recent works based on convolutional neural networks utilize the feature maps taken from the last convolutional layer to mine discriminative regions. However, the last convolutional layer tends to focus on the whole object due to the large receptive field, which leads to a reduced ability to spot the differences. To address this issue, we propose a novel Granularity-Aware Convolutional Neural Network (GA-CNN) that progressively explores discriminative feat…

Crowd counting is a challenging problem due to the scene complexity and scale variation. Although deep learning has achieved great improvement in crowd counting, scene complexity affects the judgement of these methods and they usually regard some objects as people mistakenly; causing potentially enormous errors in the crowd counting result. In this paper, we explore the problem of training one-look regression models for counting objects in datasets comprising a small number of high-resolution, variable-shaped images. We illustrate that conventional global average pooling (GAP) based models are unreliable due to the patchwise cancellation of true overestimates and underestimates for patchwise inference. To overcome this limitation and reduce overfitting caused by the training on full-resolution images, we propose to employ global sum pooling (GSP) instead of GAP or fully connected (FC) layers at the backend of a convolutional netw…

Counting objects in digital images is a process that should be replaced by machines. This tedious task is time consuming and prone to errors due to fatigue of human annotators. The goal is to have a system that takes as input an image and returns a count of the objects inside and justification for the prediction in the form of object localization. We repose a problem, originally posed by Lempitsky and Zisserman, to instead predict a count map which contains redundant counts based on the receptive field of a smaller regression network. The regression network predicts a count of the objects that…

To alleviate these issues in video crowd counting, a Locality-constrained Spatial Transformer Network (LSTN) is proposed. Specifically, we first leverage a Convolutional Neural Networks to estimate the densi…
