There has recently been significant interest in training reinforcement learning (RL) agents in vision-based environments. This poses many challenges, such as high dimensionality and the potential for observational overfitting through spurious correlations. A promising approach to solve both of these problems is an attention bottleneck, which provides a simple and effective framework for learning high performing policies, even in the presence of distractions. However, due to poor scalability of attention architectures, these methods cannot be applied beyond low resolution visual inputs, using large patches (thus small attention matrices). In this paper we make use of new efficient attention algorithms, recently shown to be highly effective for Transformers, and demonstrate that these techniques can be successfully adopted for the RL setting. This allows our attention-based controllers to scale to larger visual inputs, and facilitate the use of smaller patches, even individual pixels, improving generalization. We show this on a range of tasks from the Distracting Control Suite to vision-based quadruped robots locomotion. We provide rigorous theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithm.

We propose Geo-PIFu, a method to recover a 3D mesh from a monocular color image of a clothed person. Our method is based on a deep implicit function-based representation to learn latent voxel features using a structure-aware 3D U-Net, to constrain the model in two ways: first, to resolve feature ambiguities in query point encoding, second, to serve as a coarse human shape proxy to regularize the high-resolution mesh and encourage global shape regularity. We show that, by both encoding query points and constraining global shape using latent voxel features, the reconstruction we obtain for cloth…
Image representation is critical for many visual tasks. Instead of representing images discretely with 2D arrays of pixels, a recent study, namely local implicit image function (LIIF), denotes images as a continuous function where pixel values are expansion by using the corresponding coordinates as inputs. Due to its continuous nature, LIIF can be adopted for arbitrary-scale image super-resolution tasks, resulting in a single effective and efficient model for various up-scaling factors. However, LIIF often suffers from structural distortions and ringing artifacts around edges, mostly because a…
We propose a new simple approach for image compression: instead of storing the RGB values for each pixel of an image, we store the weights of a neural network overfitted to the image. Specifically, to encode an image, we fit it with an MLP which maps pixel locations to RGB values. We then quantize and store the weights of this MLP as a code for the image. To decode the image, we simply evaluate the MLP at every pixel location. We found that this simple approach outperforms JPEG at low bit-rates, even without entropy coding or learning a distribution over weights. While our framework is not yet…

We present FourierMask, which employs Fourier series combined with implicit neural representations to generate instance segmentation masks. We apply a Fourier mapping (FM) to the coordinate locations and utilize the mapped features as inputs to an implicit representation (coordinate-based multi-layer perceptron (MLP)). FourierMask learns to predict the coefficients of the FM for a particular instance, and therefore adapts the FM to a specific object. This allows FourierMask to be generalized to predict instance segmentation masks from natural images. Since implicit functions are continuous in …
