Spell correction is used to detect and correct orthographic mistakes in texts. Most of the time, traditional dictionary lookup with string similarity methods is suitable for the languages that have a less complex structure such as the English language. However, the Azerbaijani language has a more complex structure and due to its morphological structure, the derivation of words is plenty that several words are derived from adding suffices, affixes to the words. Therefore, in this paper sequence to sequence model with an attention mechanism is used to develop spelling correction for Azerbaijani. Total 12000 wrong and correct sentence pairs used for training, and the model is tested on 1000 real-world misspelled words and F1-score results are 75% for distance 0, 90% for distance 1, and 96% for distance 2.
Spelling correction is one of the main tasks in the field of Natural Language Processing. Contrary to common spelling errors, real-word errors cannot be detected by conventional spelling correction methods. The real-word correction model proposed by Mays, Damerau and Mercer showed a great performance in different evaluations. In this research, however, a new hybrid approach is proposed which relies on statistical and syntactic knowledge to detect and correct real-word errors. In this model, Constraint Grammar (CG) is used to discriminate among sets of correction candidates in the search space.…
Traditional Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems that generate text of highly inflectional Indic languages like Hindi tend to suffer from poor accuracy due to a wide alphabet set, compound characters and difficulty in segmenting characters in a word. Automatic spelling error detection and context-sensitive error correction can be used to improve accuracy by post-processing the text generated by these OCR systems. A majority of previously developed language models for error correction of Hindi spelling have been context-free. In this paper, we present Vartani Spellcheck - a context-sensi…

Automatic spelling and grammatical correction systems are one of the most widely used tools within natural language applications. In this thesis, we assume the task of error correction as a type of monolingual machine translation where the source sentence is potentially erroneous and the target sentence should be the corrected form of the input. Our main focus in this project is building neural network models for the task of error correction. In particular, we investigate sequence-to-sequence and attention-based models which have recently shown a higher performance than the state-of-the-art of…

Real-word spelling correction differs from non-word spelling correction in its aims and its challenges. Here we show that the central problem in real-word spelling correction is detection. Methods from non-word spelling correction, which focus instead on selection among candidate corrections, do not address detection adequately, because detection is either assumed in advance or heavily constrained. As we demonstrate in this paper, merely discriminating between the intended word and a random close variation of it within the context of a sentence is a task that can be performed with high accurac…

Misspelled words of the malicious kind work by changing specific keywords and are intended to thwart existing automated applications for cyber-environment control such as harassing content detection on the Internet and email spam detection. In this paper, we focus on malicious spelling correction, which requires an approach that relies on the context and the surface forms of targeted keywords. In the context of two applications--profanity detection and email spam detection--we show that malicious misspellings seriously degrade their performance. We then propose a context-sensitive approach for…
We propose a nested recurrent neural network (nested RNN) model for English spelling error correction and generate pseudo data based on phonetic similarity to train it. The model fuses orthographic information and context as a whole and is trained in an end-to-end fashion. This avoids feature engineering and does not rely on a noisy channel model as in traditional methods. Experiments show that the proposed method is superior to existing systems in correcting spelling errors.

In computing, spell checking is the process of detecting and sometimes providing spelling suggestions for incorrectly spelled words in a text. Basically, a spell checker is a computer program that uses a dictionary of words to perform spell checking. The bigger the dictionary is, the higher is the error detection rate. The fact that spell checkers are based on regular dictionaries, they suffer from data sparseness problem as they cannot capture large vocabulary of words including proper names, domain-specific terms, technical jargons, special acronyms, and terminologies. As a result, they exhi…
The main goal of this paper is to develop a spell checker module for clinical text in Russian. The described approach combines string distance measure algorithms with technics of machine learning embedding methods. Our overall precision is 0.86, lexical precision - 0.975 and error precision is 0.74. We develop spell checker as a part of medical text mining tool regarding the problems of misspelling, negation, experiencer and temporality detection.

We introduce NeuSpell, an open-source toolkit for spelling correction in English. Our toolkit comprises ten different models, and benchmarks them on naturally occurring misspellings from multiple sources. We find that many systems do not adequately leverage the context around the misspelt token. To remedy this, (i) we train neural models using spelling errors in context, synthetically constructed by reverse engineering isolated misspellings; and (ii) use contextual representations. By training on our synthetic examples, correction rates improve by 9% (absolute) compared to the case when models…
We present an unsupervised context-sensitive spelling correction method for clinical free-text that uses word and character n-gram embeddings. Our method generates misspelling replacement candidates and ranks them according to their semantic fit, by calculating a weighted cosine similarity between the vectorized representation of a candidate and the misspelling context. To tune the parameters of this model, we generate self-induced spelling error corpora. We perform our experiments for two languages. For English, we greatly outperform off-the-shelf spelling correction tools on a manually annot…
In this paper, we reformulated the spell correction problem as a machine translation task under the encoder-decoder framework. This reformulation enabled us to use a single model for solving the problem that is traditionally formulated as learning a language model and an error model. This model employs multi-layer recurrent neural networks as an encoder and a decoder. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this model using an internal dataset, where the training data is automatically obtained from user logs. The model offers competitive performance as compared to the state of the art methods but …

Tamil language has an agglutinative, diglossic, alpha-syllabary structure which provides a significant combinatorial explosion of morphological forms all of which are effectively used in Tamil prose, poetry from antiquity to the modern age in an unbroken chain of continuity. However, for the language understanding, spelling correction purposes some of these present challenges as out-of-dictionary words. In this paper the authors propose algorithmic techniques to handle specific problems of conjoined-words (out-of-dictionary) (transliteration)[thendRalkattRu] = [thendRal]+[kattRu] when parts ar…
Spelling error correction is an important problem in natural language processing, as a prerequisite for good performance in downstream tasks as well as an important feature in user-facing applications. For texts in Polish language, there exist works on specific error correction solutions, often developed for dealing with specialized corpora, but not evaluations of many different approaches on big resources of errors. We begin to address this problem by testing some basic and promising methods on PlEWi, a corpus of annotated spelling extracted from Polish Wikipedia. These modules may be further…

Spell-checking is the process of detecting and sometimes providing suggestions for incorrectly spelled words in a text. Basically, the larger the dictionary of a spell-checker is, the higher is the error detection rate; otherwise, misspellings would pass undetected. Unfortunately, traditional dictionaries suffer from out-of-vocabulary and data sparseness problems as they do not encompass large vocabulary of words indispensable to cover proper names, domain-specific terms, technical jargons, special acronyms, and terminologies. As a result, spell-checkers will incur low error detection and corr…
Spelling irregularities, known now as spelling mistakes, have been found for several centuries. As humans, we are able to understand most of the misspelled words based on their location in the sentence, perceived pronunciation, and context. Unlike humans, computer systems do not possess the convenient auto complete functionality of which human brains are capable. While many programs provide spelling correction functionality, many systems do not take context into account. Moreover, Artificial Intelligence systems function in the way they are trained on. With many current Natural Language Proces…

Spelling normalization for low resource languages is a challenging task because the patterns are hard to predict and large corpora are usually required to collect enough examples. This work shows a comparison of a neural model and character language models with varying amounts on target language data. Our usage scenario is interactive correction with nearly zero amounts of training examples, improving models as more data is collected, for example within a chat app. Such models are designed to be incrementally improved as feedback is given from users. In this work, we design a knowledge-base an…

Spelling error correction is one of topics which have a long history in natural language processing. Although previous studies have achieved remarkable results, challenges still exist. In the Vietnamese language, a state-of-the-art method for the task infers a syllable's context from its adjacent syllables. The method's accuracy can be unsatisfactory, however, because the model may lose the context if two (or more) spelling mistakes stand near each other. In this paper, we propose a novel method to correct Vietnamese spelling errors. We tackle the problems of mistyped errors and misspelled err…
In this work, we address the problem of spelling correction in the Arabic language utilizing the new corpus provided by QALB (Qatar Arabic Language Bank) project which is an annotated corpus of sentences with errors and their corrections. The corpus contains edit, add before, split, merge, add after, move and other error types. We are concerned with the first four error types as they contribute more than 90% of the spelling errors in the corpus. The proposed system has many models to address each error type on its own and then integrating all the models to provide an efficient and robust syste…

Spelling error correction is an important yet challenging task because a satisfactory solution of it essentially needs human-level language understanding ability. Without loss of generality we consider Chinese spelling error correction (CSC) in this paper. A state-of-the-art method for the task selects a character from a list of candidates for correction (including non-correction) at each position of the sentence on the basis of BERT, the language representation model. The accuracy of the method can be sub-optimal, however, because BERT does not have sufficient capability to detect whether the…

The task of Chinese Spelling Check (CSC) is aiming to detect and correct spelling errors that can be found in the text. While manually annotating a high-quality dataset is expensive and time-consuming, thus the scale of the training dataset is usually very small (e.g., SIGHAN15 only contains 2339 samples for training), therefore supervised-learning based models usually suffer the data sparsity limitation and over-fitting issue, especially in the era of big language models. In this paper, we are dedicated to investigating the \textbf{unsupervised} paradigm to address the CSC problem and we prop…

With the advent of digital optical scanners, a lot of paper-based books, textbooks, magazines, articles, and documents are being transformed into an electronic version that can be manipulated by a computer. For this purpose, OCR, short for Optical Character Recognition was developed to translate scanned graphical text into editable computer text. Unfortunately, OCR is still imperfect as it occasionally mis-recognizes letters and falsely identifies scanned text, leading to misspellings and linguistics errors in the OCR output text. This paper proposes a post-processing context-based error corre…
Attention-based sequence-to-sequence models for speech recognition jointly train an acoustic model, language model (LM), and alignment mechanism using a single neural network and require only parallel audio-text pairs. Thus, the language model component of the end-to-end model is only trained on transcribed audio-text pairs, which leads to performance degradation especially on rare words. While there have been a variety of work that look at incorporating an external LM trained on text-only data into the end-to-end framework, none of them have taken into account the characteristic error distrib…

The present paper aims at presenting a lemmatization and a word-level error correction system for Sorani Kurdish. We propose a hybrid approach based on the morphological rules and a n-gram language model. We have called our lemmatization and error correction systems Peyv and Rênûs respectively, which are the first tools presented for Sorani Kurdish to the best of our knowledge. The Peyv lemmatizer has shown 86.7% accuracy. As for Rênûs, using a lexicon, we have obtained 96.4% accuracy while without a lexicon, the correction system has 87% accuracy. As two fundamental text processing tools, the…
We present a novel language adaptable spell checking system which detects spelling errors and suggests context sensitive corrections in real-time. We show that our system can be extended to new languages with minimal language-specific processing. Available literature majorly discusses spell checkers for English but there are no publicly available systems which can be extended to work for other languages out of the box. Most of the systems do not work in real-time. We explain the process of generating a language's word dictionary and n-gram probability dictionaries using Wikipedia-articles data…
