While numerous methods have been proposed as defenses against adversarial examples in question answering (QA), these techniques are often model specific, require retraining of the model, and give only marginal improvements in performance over vanilla models. In this work, we present a simple model-agnostic approach to this problem that can be applied directly to any QA model without any retraining. Our method employs an explicit answer candidate reranking mechanism that scores candidate answers on the basis of their content overlap with the question before making the final prediction. Combined with a strong base QAmodel, our method outperforms state-of-the-art defense techniques, calling into question how well these techniques are actually doing and strong these adversarial testbeds are.
This paper presents a novel reranking method to better choose the optimal query graph, a sub-graph of knowledge graph, to retrieve the answer for an input question in Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA). Existing methods suffer from a severe problem that there is a significant gap between top-1 performance and the oracle score of top-n results. To address this problem, our method divides the choosing procedure into two steps: query graph ranking and query graph reranking. In the first step, we provide top-n query graphs for each question. Then we propose to rerank the top-n query graphs b…

Existing approaches for open-domain question answering (QA) are typically designed for questions that require either single-hop or multi-hop reasoning, which make strong assumptions of the complexity of questions to be answered. Also, multi-step document retrieval often incurs higher number of relevant but non-supporting documents, which dampens the downstream noise-sensitive reader module for answer extraction. To address these challenges, we propose a unified QA framework to answer any-hop open-domain questions, which iteratively retrieves, reranks and filters documents, and adaptively deter…

Open-domain question answering (QA) aims to find the answer to a question from a large collection of documents.Though many models for single-document machine comprehension have achieved strong performance, there is still much room for improving open-domain QA systems since document retrieval and answer reranking are still unsatisfactory. Golden documents that contain the correct answers may not be correctly scored by the retrieval component, and the correct answers that have been extracted may be wrongly ranked after other candidate answers by the reranking component. One of the reasons is der…

Current open-domain question answering systems often follow a Retriever-Reader architecture, where the retriever first retrieves relevant passages and the reader then reads the retrieved passages to form an answer. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective passage reranking method, named Reader-guIDEd Reranker (RIDER), which does not involve training and reranks the retrieved passages solely based on the top predictions of the reader before reranking. We show that RIDER, despite its simplicity, achieves 10 to 20 absolute gains in top-1 retrieval accuracy and 1 to 4 Exact Match (EM) gain…

The CrisisFACTS Track aims to tackle challenges such as multi-stream fact-finding in the domain of event tracking; participants' systems extract important facts from several disaster-related events while incorporating the temporal order. We propose a combination of retrieval, reranking, and the well-known Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and Maximal Marginal Relevance (MMR) frameworks. In the former two modules, we explore various methods including an entity-based baseline, pre-trained and fine-tuned Question Answering systems, and ColBERT. We then use the latter module as an extractive summar…

Adapting models to new domain without finetuning is a challenging problem in deep learning. In this paper, we utilize an adversarial training framework for domain generalization in Question Answering (QA) task. Our model consists of a conventional QA model and a discriminator. The training is performed in the adversarial manner, where the two models constantly compete, so that QA model can learn domain-invariant features. We apply this approach in MRQA Shared Task 2019 and show better performance compared to the baseline model.
To produce a domain-agnostic question answering model for the Machine Reading Question Answering (MRQA) 2019 Shared Task, we investigate the relative benefits of large pre-trained language models, various data sampling strategies, as well as query and context paraphrases generated by back-translation. We find a simple negative sampling technique to be particularly effective, even though it is typically used for datasets that include unanswerable questions, such as SQuAD 2.0. When applied in conjunction with per-domain sampling, our XLNet (Yang et al., 2019)-based submission achieved the second…
We present a study on the design of multilingual Answer Sentence Selection (AS2) models, which are a core component of modern Question Answering (QA) systems. The main idea is to transfer data, created from one resource rich language, e.g., English, to other languages, less rich in terms of resources. The main findings of this paper are: (i) the training data for AS2 translated into a target language can be used to effectively fine-tune a Transformer-based model for that language; (ii) one multilingual Transformer model it is enough to rank answers in multiple languages; and (iii) mixed-langua…

We address the problem of cross-language adaptation for question-question similarity reranking in community question answering, with the objective to port a system trained on one input language to another input language given labeled training data for the first language and only unlabeled data for the second language. In particular, we propose to use adversarial training of neural networks to learn high-level features that are discriminative for the main learning task, and at the same time are invariant across the input languages. The evaluation results show sizable improvements for our cross-…

Recent work has shown that an answer verification step introduced in Transformer-based answer selection models can significantly improve the state of the art in Question Answering. This step is performed by aggregating the embeddings of top $k$ answer candidates to support the verification of a target answer. Although the approach is intuitive and sound still shows two limitations: (i) the supporting candidates are ranked only according to the relevancy with the question and not with the answer, and (ii) the support provided by the other answer candidates is suboptimal as these are retrieved i…
Existing methods for open-retrieval question answering in lower resource languages (LRLs) lag significantly behind English. They not only suffer from the shortcomings of non-English document retrieval, but are reliant on language-specific supervision for either the task or translation. We formulate a task setup more realistic to available resources, that circumvents document retrieval to reliably transfer knowledge from English to lower resource languages. Assuming a strong English question answering model or database, we compare and analyze methods that pivot through English: to map foreign q…

Current Open-Domain Question Answering (ODQA) model paradigm often contains a retrieving module and a reading module. Given an input question, the reading module predicts the answer from the relevant passages which are retrieved by the retriever. The recent proposed Fusion-in-Decoder (FiD), which is built on top of the pretrained generative model T5, achieves the state-of-the-art performance in the reading module. Although being effective, it remains constrained by inefficient attention on all retrieved passages which contain a lot of noise. In this work, we propose a novel method KG-FiD, whic…

Mining aligned natural language (NL) and programming language (PL) pairs is a critical task to NL-PL understanding. Existing methods applied specialized hand-crafted features or separately-trained models for each PL. However, they usually suffered from low transferability across multiple PLs, especially for niche PLs with less annotated data. Fortunately, a Stack Overflow answer post is essentially a sequence of text and code blocks and its global textual context can provide PL-agnostic supplementary information. In this paper, we propose a Sequence Labeling based Question Answering (SLQA) met…

A common model for question answering (QA) is that a good answer is one that is closely related to the question, where relatedness is often determined using general-purpose lexical models such as word embeddings. We argue that a better approach is to look for answers that are related to the question in a relevant way, according to the information need of the question, which may be determined through task-specific embeddings. With causality as a use case, we implement this insight in three steps. First, we generate causal embeddings cost-effectively by bootstrapping cause-effect pairs extracted…

This paper studies the impact of different types of features applied to learning to re-rank questions in community Question Answering. We tested our models on two datasets released in SemEval-2016 Task 3 on "Community Question Answering". Task 3 targeted real-life Web fora both in English and Arabic. Our models include bag-of-words features (BoW), syntactic tree kernels (TKs), rank features, embeddings, and machine translation evaluation features. To the best of our knowledge, structural kernels have barely been applied to the question reranking task, where they have to model paraphrase relati…

Most state-of-the-art open-domain question answering systems use a neural retrieval model to encode passages into continuous vectors and extract them from a knowledge source. However, such retrieval models often require large memory to run because of the massive size of their passage index. In this paper, we introduce Binary Passage Retriever (BPR), a memory-efficient neural retrieval model that integrates a learning-to-hash technique into the state-of-the-art Dense Passage Retriever (DPR) to represent the passage index using compact binary codes rather than continuous vectors. BPR is trained …

In this paper we present OSCAR (Ontology-based Semantic Composition Augmented Regularization), a method for injecting task-agnostic knowledge from an Ontology or knowledge graph into a neural network during pretraining. We evaluated the impact of including OSCAR when pretraining BERT with Wikipedia articles by measuring the performance when fine-tuning on two question answering tasks involving world knowledge and causal reasoning and one requiring domain (healthcare) knowledge and obtained 33:3%, 18:6%, and 4% improved accuracy compared to pretraining BERT without OSCAR and obtaining new state…

A popular recent approach to answering open-domain questions is to first search for question-related passages and then apply reading comprehension models to extract answers. Existing methods usually extract answers from single passages independently. But some questions require a combination of evidence from across different sources to answer correctly. In this paper, we propose two models which make use of multiple passages to generate their answers. Both use an answer-reranking approach which reorders the answer candidates generated by an existing state-of-the-art QA model. We propose two met…

In this work, we aim to capitalize on the unique few-shot capabilities of large-scale language models (LSLMs) to overcome some of their challenges with respect to grounding to factual and up-to-date information. Motivated by semi-parametric language models (LMs), which ground their decisions in external retrieved evidence, we use few-shot prompting to learn to condition LMs on information returned from the web using Google Search, a broad and constantly updated knowledge source. Our approach does not involve fine-tuning or learning additional parameters, thus making it applicable to any LM, of…

Existing open-domain question answering (QA) models are not suitable for real-time usage because they need to process several long documents on-demand for every input query. In this paper, we introduce the query-agnostic indexable representation of document phrases that can drastically speed up open-domain QA and also allows us to reach long-tail targets. In particular, our dense-sparse phrase encoding effectively captures syntactic, semantic, and lexical information of the phrases and eliminates the pipeline filtering of context documents. Leveraging optimization strategies, our model can be …

Current answer sentence selection (AS2) applied in open-domain question answering (ODQA) selects answers by ranking a large set of possible candidates, i.e., sentences, extracted from the retrieved text. In this paper, we present Passage-based Extracting Answer Sentence In-place (PEASI), a novel design for AS2 optimized for Web-scale setting, that, instead, computes such answer without processing each candidate individually. Specifically, we design a Transformer-based framework that jointly (i) reranks passages retrieved for a question and (ii) identifies a probable answer from the top passage…

Rapid progress has been made in the field of reading comprehension and question answering, where several systems have achieved human parity in some simplified settings. However, the performance of these models degrades significantly when they are applied to more realistic scenarios, such as answers involve various types, multiple text strings are correct answers, or discrete reasoning abilities are required. In this paper, we introduce the Multi-Type Multi-Span Network (MTMSN), a neural reading comprehension model that combines a multi-type answer predictor designed to support various answer t…
