Distance-based dynamic texture recognition is an important research field in multimedia processing with applications ranging from retrieval to segmentation of video data. Based on the conjecture that the most distinctive characteristic of a dynamic texture is the appearance of its individual frames, this work proposes to describe dynamic textures as kernelized spaces of frame-wise feature vectors computed using the Scattering transform. By combining these spaces with a basis-invariant metric, we get a framework that produces competitive results for nearest neighbor classification and state-of-the-art results for nearest class center classification.

Dynamic texture (DT) exhibits statistical stationarity in the spatial domain and stochastic repetitiveness in the temporal dimension, indicating that different frames of DT possess a high similarity correlation that is critical prior knowledge. However, existing methods cannot effectively learn a promising synthesis model for high-dimensional DT from a small number of training data. In this paper, we propose a novel DT synthesis method, which makes full use of similarity prior knowledge to address this issue. Our method bases on the proposed kernel similarity embedding, which not only can miti…

An essential aspect of texture analysis is the extraction of features that describe the distribution of values in local, spatial regions. We present a localized histogram layer for artificial neural networks. Instead of computing global histograms as done previously, the proposed histogram layer directly computes the local, spatial distribution of features for texture analysis and parameters for the layer are estimated during backpropagation. We compare our method with state-of-the-art texture encoding methods such as the Deep Encoding Network Pooling, Deep Texture Encoding Network, Fisher Vec…

Recent research in image and video recognition indicates that many visual processes can be thought of as being generated by a time-varying generative model. A nearby descriptive model for visual processes is thus a statistical distribution that varies over time. Specifically, modeling visual processes as streams of histograms generated by a kernelized linear dynamic system turns out to be efficient. We refer to such a model as a System of Bags. In this work, we investigate Systems of Bags with special emphasis on dynamic scenes and dynamic textures. Parameters of linear dynamic systems suffer …

In this paper, we have proposed a novel feature descriptors combining color and texture information collectively. In our proposed color descriptor component, the inter-channel relationship between Hue (H) and Saturation (S) channels in the HSV color space has been explored which was not done earlier. We have quantized the H channel into a number of bins and performed the voting with saturation values and vice versa by following a principle similar to that of the HOG descriptor, where orientation of the gradient is quantized into a certain number of bins and voting is done with gradient magnitu…
Recently, methods have been proposed that perform texture synthesis and style transfer by using convolutional neural networks (e.g. Gatys et al. [2015,2016]). These methods are exciting because they can in some cases create results with state-of-the-art quality. However, in this paper, we show these methods also have limitations in texture quality, stability, requisite parameter tuning, and lack of user controls. This paper presents a multiscale synthesis pipeline based on convolutional neural networks that ameliorates these issues. We first give a mathematical explanation of the source of ins…
Spatial-temporal local binary pattern (STLBP) has been widely used in dynamic texture recognition. STLBP often encounters the high-dimension problem as its dimension increases exponentially, so that STLBP could only utilize a small neighborhood. To tackle this problem, we propose a method for dynamic texture recognition using PDV hashing and dictionary learning on multi-scale volume local binary pattern (PHD-MVLBP). Instead of forming very high-dimensional LBP histogram features, it first uses hash functions to map the pixel difference vectors (PDVs) to binary vectors, then forms a dictionary …

Breast cancer is becoming pervasive with each passing day. Hence, its early detection is a big step in saving the life of any patient. Mammography is a common tool in breast cancer diagnosis. The most important step here is classification of mammogram patches as normal-abnormal and benign-malignant. Texture of a breast in a mammogram patch plays a significant role in these classifications. We propose a variation of Histogram of Gradients (HOG) and Gabor filter combination called Histogram of Oriented Texture (HOT) that exploits this fact. We also revisit the Pass Band - Discrete Cosine Transfo…

In this work, we present a novel methodology for texture image recognition using a partial differential equation modeling. More specifically, we employ the pseudo-parabolic Buckley-Leverett equation to provide a dynamics to the digital image representation and collect local descriptors from those images evolving in time. For the local descriptors we employ the magnitude and signal binary patterns and a simple histogram of these features was capable of achieving promising results in a classification task. We compare the accuracy over well established benchmark texture databases and the results …
In this paper, we address the problem of stamp recognition. The goal is to classify a given stamp to a certain country and also identify the year it is published. We propose a new approach for stamp recognition based on describing a given stamp image using color information and texture information. For color information we use color histogram for the entire image and for texture we use two features. SIFT which is based on local feature descriptors and HOG which is a dens texture descriptor. As a result on total we have three different types of features. Our initial evaluation shows that give t…
In this paper we use machine learning to study the application of Local Tchebichef Moments (LTM) to the problem of texture classification. The original LTM method was proposed by Mukundan (2014). The LTM method can be used for texture analysis in many different ways, either using the moment values directly, or more simply creating a relationship between the moment values of different orders, producing a histogram similar to those of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) based methods. The original method was not fully tested with large datasets, and there are several parameters that should be characteris…

In this paper we propose a novel texture descriptor called Fractal Weighted Local Binary Pattern (FWLBP). The fractal dimension (FD) measure is relatively invariant to scale-changes, and presents a good correlation with human viewpoint of surface roughness. We have utilized this property to construct a scale-invariant descriptor. Here, the input image is sampled using an augmented form of the local binary pattern (LBP) over three different radii, and then used an indexing operation to assign FD weights to the collected samples. The final histogram of the descriptor has its features calculated …

This work presents a first evaluation of using spatio-temporal receptive fields from a recently proposed time-causal spatio-temporal scale-space framework as primitives for video analysis. We propose a new family of video descriptors based on regional statistics of spatio-temporal receptive field responses and evaluate this approach on the problem of dynamic texture recognition. Our approach generalises a previously used method, based on joint histograms of receptive field responses, from the spatial to the spatio-temporal domain and from object recognition to dynamic texture recognition. The …

Methods based on local image features have recently shown promise for texture classification tasks, especially in the presence of large intra-class variation due to illumination, scale, and viewpoint changes. Inspired by the theories of image structure analysis, this paper presents a simple, efficient, yet robust descriptor namely local jet pattern (LJP) for texture classification. In this approach, a jet space representation of a texture image is derived from a set of derivatives of Gaussian (DtGs) filter responses up to second order, so called local jet vectors (LJV), which also satisfy the …
Dynamic texture (DT) segmentation, and video processing in general, is currently widely dominated by methods based on deep neural networks that require the deployment of a large number of layers. Although this parametric approach has shown superior performances for the dynamic texture segmentation, all current deep learning methods suffer from a significant main weakness related to the lack of a sufficient reference annotation to train models and to make them functional. This study explores the unsupervised segmentation approach that can be used in the absence of training data to segment new v…
Texture analysis is a well-known research topic in computer vision and image processing and has many applications. Gradient-based texture methods have become popular in classification problems. For the first time we extend a well-known gradient-based method, Co-occurrence Histograms of Oriented Gradients (CoHOG) to extract texture features from 2D Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI). Unlike the original CoHOG method, we use the whole image instead of sub-regions for feature calculation. Also, we use a larger neighborhood size. Gradient orientations of the image pixels are calculated using Sobel, G…

Object recognition and grasping plays a key role in robotic systems, especially for the autonomous robots to implement object sorting tasks in a warehouse. In this paper, we present a global texture-shape 3D feature descriptor which can be utilized in a system of object recognition and grasping, and can perform object sorting tasks well. Our proposed descriptor stems from the clustered viewpoint feature histogram (CVFH), which relies on the geometrical information of the whole 3D object surface only, and can not perform well in recognizing the objects with similar geometrical information. Ther…

This work proposes a novel method based on a pseudo-parabolic diffusion process to be employed for texture recognition. The proposed operator is applied over a range of time scales giving rise to a family of images transformed by nonlinear filters. Therefore each of those images are encoded by a local descriptor (we use local binary patterns for that purpose) and they are summarized by a simple histogram, yielding in this way the image feature vector. The proposed approach is tested on the classification of well established benchmark texture databases and on a practical task of plant species r…
