We study cross correlations between line intensity and weak lensing maps to search for axion-like particles (ALPs). Radiative decay of eV-mass ALPs can contribute to cosmic background emissions at optical and infrared wavelengths. Line intensity mapping is a unique means of measuring the background emission at a given photon frequency. If ALPs constitute the abundance of cosmic dark matter, line intensity maps can correlate with large-scale structures probed by weak gravitational lensing effects in galaxy imaging surveys. We develop a theoretical framework to predict the cross correlation. We then explore potentiality of probing ALPs with the cross correlation in upcoming galaxy-imaging and spectral surveys. Assuming SPHEREx and the Vera Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), we find that the cross correlation by the ALP decay can be greater than the astrophysical-line counterparts at wavelength of $\sim3000\, {\rm nm}$ for ALPs with a particle mass of $m_a\sim1\, \mathrm{eV}$ and a particle-to-two-photons coupling of $g_{aγγ}\sim1\times10^{-11}\, \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$. We also predict that a null detection of the cross correlation can place a $2σ$-level upper bound of $g_{aγγ} \lower.5ex\hbox{$\; \buildrel < \over \sim \;$} 10^{-11}\, \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ for eV-mass ALPs, improving the current constraint by a factor of $\sim10$. We then make a forecast of expected constraints on ALP parameters in SPHEREx and LSST by Fisher analysis, providing a guideline of searching for the ALP decay with the large-scale structure data.
Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are some of the best-motivated dark matter (DM) candidates. Under certain circumstances, large axion fluctuations in the early universe can collapse to form dense configurations called axion clumps. The densest axion clumps are metastable states known as oscillons. In this paper we propose a new class of observables that exploit the axion's coupling to photons. As a result of this coupling an axion clump acts like an inhomogeneous refractive optical medium -- a lens -- that causes anomalous dispersion of incident electromagnetic waves. The dispersion of e…
Strong mixing between photons and axion-like particles in the magnetic fields of clusters of galaxies induces a scatter in the observed luminosities of compact sources in the cluster. This is used to construct a new test for axion-like particles; applied to observations of active galactic nuclei it is strongly suggestive of the existence of a light axion-like particle.
We explore a novel detection possibility for solar axions, which relies only on their couplings to nucleons, via the axion-induced dissociation of deuterons into their constituent neutrons and protons. An opportune target for this process is the now-concluded Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) experiment, which relied upon large quantities of heavy water to resolve the solar neutrino problem. From the full SNO dataset we exclude in a model-independent fashion isovector axion-nucleon couplings $|g^3_{aN}|\equiv\frac{1}{2}|g_{an}-g_{ap}|>2\times10^{-5}$GeV${}^{-1}$ at 95 % C.L. for sub-MeV axion…
We establish strong gravitational lens systems as robust probes of axion-like particles (ALPs) -- a candidate for dark matter. A tiny interaction of photons with ALPs induces birefringence. Multiple images of gravitationally lensed polarised objects allow differential birefringence measurement, alleviating systematics and astrophysical dependencies. We apply this novel method to the lens system CLASS B1152+199 and constrain ALP-photon coupling $\le 9.2\times 10^{-11}\, {\rm GeV}^{-1} \textrm{ to } 7.7\times 10^{-8}\, {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ ($95\%$ C.L.) for ALP mass between $3.6\times 10^{-21} \,{\rm…
We discuss the sensitivity of the present and near-future axion dark matter experiments to a halo of axions or axion-like particles gravitationally bound to the Earth or the Sun. The existence of such halos, assuming they are formed, renders a significant gain in the sensitivity of axion searches while satisfying all the present experimental bounds. The structure and coherence properties of these halos also imply novel signals, which can depend on the latitude or orientation of the detector. We demonstrate this by analysing the sensitivity of several distinct types of axion dark matter experim…
Axions are a viable candidate for Cold Dark Matter (CDM) which should generically form minihalos of sub-planetary masses from white-noise isocurvature density fluctuations if the Peccei-Quinn phase transition occurs after inflation. Despite being denser than the larger halos formed out of adiabatic fluctuations from inflation, axion minihalos have surface densities much smaller than the critical value required for gravitational lensing to produce multiple images or high magnification, and hence are practically undetectable as lenses in isolation. However, their lensing effect can be enhanced w…
We investigate the use of next generation radio telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) to detect axion two-photon coupling in the astrophysical environment. The uncertainty surrounding astrophysical magnetic fields presents new challenges, but with a frequency range corresponding to axions of mass $1.7-57μ$eV and a spectral profile with a number of distinguishing features, SKA-mid offers a tantalising opportunity to constrain axion dark matter properties. To determine the sensitivity of SKA-mid to an axion signal, we consider observations of the Galactic centre and interstellar me…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) can form a network of cosmic strings and domain walls that survives after recombination and leads to anisotropic birefringence of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In addition to studying cosmic strings, we clarify and emphasize how the formation of ALP-field domain walls impacts the cosmic birefringence signal; these observations provide a unique way of probing ALPs with masses in the range $3H_0 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 3H_{\rm cmb}$. Using measurements of CMB birefringence from several telescopes, we find no evidence for axion-defect-induced anisotropic birefri…
The extragalactic background light is comprised of the cumulative radiation from all galaxies across the history of the universe. The angular power spectrum of the anisotropies of such a background at near-infrared (IR) frequencies lacks of a complete understanding and shows a robust excess which cannot be easily explained with known sources. Dark matter in the form of axion-like particles (ALPs) with a mass around the electronvolt will decay into two photons with wavelengths in the near-IR band, possibly contributing to the background intensity. We compute the near-IR background angular power…
Primordial decays of string theory moduli at z \sim 10^{12} naturally generate a dark radiation Cosmic Axion Background (CAB) with 0.1 - 1 keV energies. This CAB can be detected through axion-photon conversion in astrophysical magnetic fields to give quasi-thermal excesses in the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray bands. Substantial and observable luminosities may be generated even for axion-photon couplings \ll 10^{-11} GeV^{-1}. We propose that axion-photon conversion may explain the observed excess emission of soft X-rays from galaxy clusters, and may also contribute to the diffuse unresolv…
Axion-like particles are a broad class of dark matter candidates which are expected to behave as a coherent, classical field with a weak coupling to photons. Research into the detectability of these particles with laser interferometers has recently revealed a number of promising experimental designs. Inspired by these ideas, we propose the Axion Detection with Birefringent Cavities (ADBC) experiment, a new axion interferometry concept using a cavity that exhibits birefringence between its two, linearly polarized laser eigenmodes. This experimental concept overcomes several limitations of the d…
Gravitational lensing time delays offer an avenue to measure the Hubble parameter $H_0$, with some analyses suggesting a tension with early-type probes of $H_0$. The lensing measurements must mitigate systematic uncertainties due to the mass modelling of lens galaxies. In particular, a core component in the lens density profile would form an approximate local mass sheet degeneracy and could bias $H_0$ in the right direction to solve the lensing tension. We consider ultralight dark matter as a possible mechanism to generate such galactic cores. We show that cores of roughly the required propert…
Some inflationary models predict the existence of isocurvature primordial fluctuations, in addition to the well known adiabatic perturbation. Such mixed models are not yet ruled out by available data sets. In this paper we explore the possibility of obtaining better constraints on the isocurva- ture contribution from future astronomical data. We consider the axion and curvaton inflationary scenarios, and use Planck satellite experimental specifications together with SDSS galaxy survey to forecast for the best parameter error estimation by means of the Fisher information matrix formal- ism. In …
A great deal of attention has been given to the so-called Cold Spot in maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature. We present a similar analysis, searching for extremal spots in the CMB lensing convergence and lensing potential maps from the Planck 2018 data release. We perform a multi-scale and multi-filter analysis using the first three members of the Mexican-hat wavelet family to search for extremal features of different shapes and sizes. Although an initial analysis appears to show the existence of some extremal spots at scales below about 5 degree, we conclude, after margin…
We propose new perspective in searching for axion-like particles (ALPs) from quark and lepton flavor physics: measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in $B^0 \to K_S^0 π^0 γ$ and the branching ratio of $B_s \to e^\pm μ^\mp$ decay possess, along with the anomalous magnetic moment of muon. In the mass range of sub-GeV, accessible by the flavorful ALPs search, the experimental sensitivity for these flavor observables reaches the maximum at around the pion mass scale (called the {\it sweetest} spots), where a couple of loopholes (unexplored regions) for the ALP parameter space have heretof…
The phase transition responsible for axion dark matter production can create large amplitude isocurvature perturbations which collapse into dense objects known as axion miniclusters. We use microlensing data from the EROS survey, and from recent observations with the Subaru Hyper Suprime Cam to place constraints on the minicluster scenario. We compute the microlensing event rate for miniclusters treating them as spatially extended objects with an extended mass function. Using the published bounds on the number of microlensing events we bound the fraction of DM collapsed into miniclusters, $f_{…
We consider the CANNEX (Casimir And Non-Newtonian force EXperiment) test of the quantum vacuum intended for measuring the gradient of the Casimir pressure between two flat parallel plates at large separations and constraining parameters of the chameleon model of dark energy in cosmology. A modification of the measurement scheme is proposed that allows simultaneous measurements of both the Casimir pressure and its gradient in one experiment. It is shown that with several improvements the CANNEX test will be capable to strengthen the constraints on the parameters of the Yukawa-type interaction b…
Dark matter comprised of axion-like particles (ALPs) generated by the realignment mechanism in the post-inflationary scenario leads to primordial isocurvature fluctuations. The power spectrum of these fluctuations is flat for small wave numbers, extending to scales accessible with cosmological surveys. We use the latest measurements of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) primary anisotropies together with CMB lensing, Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) cluster counts to measure the amplitude and tilt of the isocurvature component. We find preference for a white-nois…
In this $\textit{Letter}$, we search for the signal of the primordial black holes (PBHs) by correlating the $γ$-ray emissions in the MeV energy band produced by the Hawking evaporation and the lensing effect of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We use the conservative case of the astrophysical model as much as possible in the calculations, since the potential astrophysical origins dominate the observed emission in the MeV energy band. By carefully discussing the appropriate energy bands corresponding to different PBHs masses, it is worth expecting a tight constraint on the fraction of the…
We review the physics case for very weakly coupled ultralight particles beyond the Standard Model, in particular for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs): (i) the axionic solution of the strong CP problem and its embedding in well motivated extensions of the Standard Model; (ii) the possibility that the cold dark matter in the Universe is comprised of axions and ALPs; (iii) the ALP explanation of the anomalous transparency of the Universe for TeV photons; and (iv) the axion or ALP explanation of the anomalous energy loss of white dwarfs. Moreover, we present an overview of ongoing and near-f…
In this work, we investigate the dark sector of a supersymmetric axion model, consisting of the late-decaying gravitino/axino dark matter and axion dark radiation. In the early universe, the decay of the scalar superpartner of the axion (saxion) will produce a large amount of entropy. The additional entropy can not only dilute the relic density of the gravitino/axino dark matter to avoid overclosing the universe but also relax the constraint on the reheating temperature $T_{R}$ after inflation. Meanwhile, the axion dark radiation from the saxion decay will increase the effective number of neut…
We propose new signals for the direct detection of ultralight dark matter such as the axion. Axion or axion like particle (ALP) dark matter may be thought of as a background, classical field. We consider couplings for this field which give rise to observable effects including a nuclear electric dipole moment, and axial nucleon and electron moments. These moments oscillate rapidly with frequencies accessible in the laboratory, ~ kHz to GHz, given by the dark matter mass. Thus, in contrast to WIMP detection, instead of searching for the hard scattering of a single dark matter particle, we are se…
We explore the possible cosmological consequence of the gravitational coupling between the inflaton and axion-like fields. In view of the forthcoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization and lensing data, we study the sensitivity of the CMB data on the cross-correlation between the curvature and axion isocurvature perturbations. Through a concrete example, we illustrate the explicit dependence of the scale dependent cross-correlation power spectrum on the axion parameters.

We investigate a novel technique for the astrophysical detection of axions or axion-like particles in the dark matter halo of the Milky Way based on stimulated decay of axions, which we call axion gegenschein emission. Photons from the brightest known radio sources with a frequency equal to half the axion mass stimulate axion decay while propagating through the dark matter halo, causing radio emission in a direction precisely opposite to the incoming photon in the axion rest-frame and creating a countersource for every radio source, with an image smoothed by the dark matter velocity dispersion…
We summarise the recent progress of the Axion Longitudinal Plasma HAloscope (ALPHA) Consortium, a new experimental collaboration to build a plasma haloscope to search for axions and dark photons. The plasma haloscope is a novel method for the detection of the resonant conversion of light dark matter to photons. ALPHA will be sensitive to QCD axions over almost a decade of parameter space, potentially discovering dark matter and resolving the Strong CP problem. Unlike traditional cavity haloscopes, which are generally limited in volume by the Compton wavelength of the dark matter, plasma halosc…
We investigate the detectability of axino-like particle, which is defined as a supersymmetric partner of axion-like particle and can be a good candidate for dark matter in our Universe. Especially, we consider the fixed target experiments to search for the light axino-like particle with a neutralino as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. We calculate the production and decay rate of neutralinos and the consequent number of events (such as photons and charged leptons) that are produced when the neutralinos decay to the axino-like particles.
The process by which the mass density profile of certain galaxy clusters becomes centrally concentrated enough to produce high strong lensing (SL) cross-sections is not well understood. It has been suggested that the baryonic condensation of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) due to cooling may drag dark matter to the cores and thus steepen the profile. In this work, we search for evidence of ongoing ICM cooling in the first large, well-defined sample of strong lensing selected galaxy clusters in the range 0.1 < z < 0.6. Based on known correlations between the ICM cooling rate and both optical emi…
We investigate the possibility of enhancement of effective axion decay constant in well controlled constructions in string theory. To this end, we study the dynamics of axions arising in the compactifications of type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with background fluxes (with non-perturbative effects included to ensure stabilization of all moduli). In this setup, we attempt to obtain large effective axion decay constant in two different ways: by searching for a direction in field space in which the potential is sufficiently flat and by arriving at a very explicit stringy embeddin…

The high-energy Universe is potentially a great laboratory for searching new light bosons such as axion-like particles (ALPs). Cosmic sources are indeed the scene of violent phenomena that involve strong magnetic field and/or very long baselines, where the effects of the mixing of photons with ALPs could lead to observable effects. Two examples are archetypal of this fact, that are the Universe opacity to gamma-rays and the imprints of astrophysical magnetic turbulence in the energy spectra of high-energy sources. In the first case, hints for the existence of ALPs can be proposed whereas the s…
We propose a hybrid quadratic estimator to measure cross correlations between gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and differential screening effects arising from fluctuations in the electron column density, such as could arise from patchy reionization. The hybrid quadratic estimators are validated by simulated data sets with both Planck and CMB-Stage 4 (CMB-S4) instrumental properties and found to be able to recover the cross-power spectra with almost no biases. We apply this technique to Planck 2015 temperature data and obtain cross-power spectra between gravitation…
We use MUSE spectroscopic observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo T between 470 and 935 nm to search for radiative decays of axion like particles (ALPs). Under the assumption that ALPs constitute the dark matter component of the Leo T halo, we derive bounds on the effective ALP-two-photon coupling. We improve existing limits by more than one order of magnitude in the ALP mass range 2.7-5.3 eV.
We derive spectral line shapes of the expected signal for a haloscope experiment searching for axionlike dark matter. The knowledge of these line shapes is needed to optimize an experimental design and data analysis procedure. We extend the previously known results for the axion-photon and axion-gluon couplings to the case of gradient (axion-fermion) coupling. A unique feature of the gradient interaction is its dependence not only on magnitudes but also on directions of velocities of galactic halo particles, which leads to the directional sensitivity of the corresponding haloscope. We also dis…
Ultralight axionlike particles (ALPs) are compelling dark matter candidates because of their potential to resolve small-scale discrepancies between $Λ$CDM predictions and cosmological observations. Axion-photon coupling induces a polarization rotation in linearly polarized photons traveling through an ALP field; thus, as the local ALP dark matter field oscillates in time, distant static polarized sources will appear to oscillate with a frequency proportional to the ALP mass. We use observations of the cosmic microwave background from SPT-3G, the current receiver on the South Pole Telescope, to…
