In this paper, we propose a novel SpatioTemporal convolutional Dense Network (STDNet) to address the video-based crowd counting problem, which contains the decomposition of 3D convolution and the 3D spatiotemporal dilated dense convolution to alleviate the rapid growth of the model size caused by the Conv3D layer. Moreover, since the dilated convolution extracts the multiscale features, we combine the dilated convolution with the channel attention block to enhance the feature representations. Due to the error that occurs from the difficulty of labeling crowds, especially for videos, imprecise or standard-inconsistent labels may lead to poor convergence for the model. To address this issue, we further propose a new patch-wise regression loss (PRL) to improve the original pixel-wise loss. Experimental results on three video-based benchmarks, i.e., the UCSD, Mall and WorldExpo'10 datasets, show that STDNet outperforms both image- and video-based state-of-the-art methods. The source codes are released at \url{https://github.com/STDNet/STDNet}.

Crowd localization is a new computer vision task, evolved from crowd counting. Different from the latter, it provides more precise location information for each instance, not just counting numbers for the whole crowd scene, which brings greater challenges, especially in extremely congested crowd scenes. In this paper, we focus on how to achieve precise instance localization in high-density crowd scenes, and to alleviate the problem that the feature extraction ability of the traditional model is reduced due to the target occlusion, the image blur, etc. To this end, we propose a Dilated Convolut…
Digital technologies ignited a revolution in the agrifood domain known as precision agriculture: a main question for enabling precision agriculture at scale is if accurate product quality control can be made available at minimal cost, leveraging existing technologies and agronomists' skills. As a contribution along this direction we demonstrate a tool for accurate fruit yield estimation from smartphone cameras, by adapting Deep Learning algorithms originally developed for crowd counting.

Region of Interest (ROI) crowd counting can be formulated as a regression problem of learning a mapping from an image or a video frame to a crowd density map. Recently, convolutional neural network (CNN) models have achieved promising results for crowd counting. However, even when dealing with video data, CNN-based methods still consider each video frame independently, ignoring the strong temporal correlation between neighboring frames. To exploit the otherwise very useful temporal information in video sequences, we propose a variant of a recent deep learning model called convolutional LSTM (C…
Thanks to recent advances in CNNs, solid improvements have been made in semantic segmentation of high resolution remote sensing imagery. However, most of the previous works have not fully taken into account the specific difficulties that exist in remote sensing tasks. One of such difficulties is that objects are small and crowded in remote sensing imagery. To tackle with this challenging task we have proposed a novel architecture called local feature extraction (LFE) module attached on top of dilated front-end module. The LFE module is based on our findings that aggressively increasing dilatio…

Video Salient Document Detection (VSDD) is an essential task of practical computer vision, which aims to highlight visually salient document regions in video frames. Previous techniques for VSDD focus on learning features without considering the cooperation among and across the appearance and motion cues and thus fail to perform in practical scenarios. Moreover, most of the previous techniques demand high computational resources, which limits the usage of such systems in resource-constrained settings. To handle these issues, we propose VS-Net, which captures multi-scale spatiotemporal informat…

We propose the use of dilated filters to construct an aggregation module in a multicolumn convolutional neural network for perspective-free counting. Counting is a common problem in computer vision (e.g. traffic on the street or pedestrians in a crowd). Modern approaches to the counting problem involve the production of a density map via regression whose integral is equal to the number of objects in the image. However, objects in the image can occur at different scales (e.g. due to perspective effects) which can make it difficult for a learning agent to learn the proper density map. While the …

Crowd counting aims to count the number of instantaneous people in a crowded space, and many promising solutions have been proposed for single image crowd counting. With the ubiquitous video capture devices in public safety field, how to effectively apply the crowd counting technique to video content has become an urgent problem. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework based on temporal aware modeling of the relationship between video frames. The proposed network contains a few dilated residual blocks, and each of them consists of the layers that compute the temporal convolutions of feat…

The problem of automated crowd segmentation and counting has garnered significant interest in the field of video surveillance. This paper proposes a novel scene invariant crowd segmentation and counting algorithm designed with high accuracy yet low computational complexity in mind, which is key for widespread industrial adoption. A novel low-complexity, scale-normalized feature called Histogram of Moving Gradients (HoMG) is introduced for highly effective spatiotemporal representation of individuals and crowds within a video. Real-time crowd segmentation is achieved via boosted cascade of weak…
We present an efficient method for detecting anomalies in videos. Recent applications of convolutional neural networks have shown promises of convolutional layers for object detection and recognition, especially in images. However, convolutional neural networks are supervised and require labels as learning signals. We propose a spatiotemporal architecture for anomaly detection in videos including crowded scenes. Our architecture includes two main components, one for spatial feature representation, and one for learning the temporal evolution of the spatial features. Experimental results on Aven…

Counting people or objects with significantly varying scales and densities has attracted much interest from the research community and yet it remains an open problem. In this paper, we propose a simple but an efficient and effective network, named DENet, which is composed of two components, i.e., a detection network (DNet) and an encoder-decoder estimation network (ENet). We first run DNet on an input image to detect and count individuals who can be segmented clearly. Then, ENet is utilized to estimate the density maps of the remaining areas, where the numbers of individuals cannot be detected…

Crowd counting has been widely studied by computer vision community in recent years. Due to the large scale variation, it remains to be a challenging task. Previous methods adopt either multi-column CNN or single-column CNN with multiple branches to deal with this problem. However, restricted by the number of columns or branches, these methods can only capture a few different scales and have limited capability. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective network called DSNet for crowd counting, which can be easily trained in an end-to-end fashion. The key component of our network is the d…
Understanding crowd behavior in video is challenging for computer vision. There have been increasing attempts on modeling crowded scenes by introducing ever larger property ontologies (attributes) and annotating ever larger training datasets. However, in contrast to still images, manually annotating video attributes needs to consider spatiotemporal evolution which is inherently much harder and more costly. Critically, the most interesting crowd behaviors captured in surveillance videos (e.g., street fighting, flash mobs) are either rare, thus have few examples for model training, or unseen pre…
