Accurate channel estimation is essential for achieving the performance gains offered by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communications. A variety of channel estimation methods have been proposed for such systems; however, none of the existing methods takes into account the effect of synchronization errors such as carrier frequency offset (CFO). In general, CFO can significantly degrade channel estimation performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Motivated by this, we investigate the effect of CFO on channel estimation for RIS-aided OFDM systems. Furthermore, we propose a joint CFO and channel impulse response (CIR) estimation method for these systems. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, and also demonstrate that the use of time-domain rather than frequency-domain estimation in this context results in an improvement in the mean-squared error (MSE) performance of channel estimation as well as a significantly lower overall computational complexity.
As dense low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations are being planned, the need for accurate synchronization schemes in high-speed environments remains a challenging problem to tackle. To further improve synchronization accuracy in channeling environments, which can also be applied in the LEO networks, we present a new method for estimating the carrier frequency offset (CFO) and frame misalignment in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based inter-satellite links. The proposed method requires the transmission of pilot symbols to exploit 2-D estimation of signal parameters via rotationa…

This paper addresses the performance of a full-duplex (FD) generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) transceiver in the presence of radio frequency (RF) impairments including phase noise, carrier frequency offset (CFO) and in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) imbalance. We study analog and digital self-interference (SI) cancellation and develop a complementary SI suppression method. Closed-form solutions for the residual SI power and the desired signal power and signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) are provided. Simulation results show that the RF impairments degrade SI cancellation and FD G…
Unique word-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UW-OFDM) is known to provide various performance benefits over conventional OFDM using cyclic prefixes (CP). Most important, UW-OFDM features excellent spectral sidelobe suppression properties and an outstanding bit error ratio performance. Current research has mainly focused on principle performance bounds of UW-OFDM, with less attention on challenges aside from idealized communication scenarios, such as system parameter estimation tasks. In this work we present an approach for including frequency pilots tones into the UW-OFDM signaling …
Spectrum sensing plays a critical role in dynamic spectrum sharing, a promising technology to address the radio spectrum shortage. In particular, sensing of Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals, a widely accepted multi-carrier transmission paradigm, has received paramount interest. Despite various efforts, most conventional OFDM sensing methods suffer from noise uncertainty, timing delay and carrier frequency offset (CFO) that significantly degrade the sensing accuracy. To address these challenges, this work develops two novel OFDM sensing frameworks drawing support from d…
This thesis is concerned with data-aided (DA) scheme and CFO tracking for OFDM system. OFDM system model is developed first without CFO and then with CFO. The system performance is evaluated via simulation. The bit error rate (BER), constellation diagram, the phase output and phase error were taken as performance measures. The performance is evaluated for different types of modulation over different channel conditions. In this thesis, a dual bandwidth for CFO tracking based on type-2 control loop to reduce the acquisition time of PLL is proposed. It is proved that the proposed scheme is signif…
A novel joint symbol timing and carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation algorithm is proposed for reduced-guard-interval coherent optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (RGI-CO-OFDM) systems. The proposed algorithm is based on a constant amplitude zero autocorrelation (CAZAC) sequence weighted by a pseudo-random noise (PN) sequence. The symbol timing is accomplished by using only one training symbol of two identical halves, with the weighting applied to the second half. The special structure of the training symbol is also utilized in estimating the CFO. The performance of the pro…

In this paper, we consider a downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system from a base station to a high-speed train (HST) equipped with fully/partly calibrated massive uniform linear antenna-array (ULA) in wireless environments with abundant scatterers. Multiple Doppler frequency offsets (DFOs) stemming from intensive propagation paths together with transceiver oscillator frequency offset (OFO) result in a fast time-varying frequency-selective channel. We develop an angle domain carrier frequency offset (CFO, general designation for DFO and OFO) estimation approach. A high…
Accurate channel estimation is essential to achieve the performance gains promised by the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in wireless communications. In the uplink of multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, synchronization errors such as carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) can significantly degrade the channel estimation performance. This becomes more critical in RIS-aided communications, as even a small channel estimation error leads to a significant performance loss. Motivated by this, we propose a joint CFO and channel estimation method for R…
Joint RADAR communication (JRC) systems that use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be compromised by an adversary that re-produces the received OFDM signal creating thus false RADAR targets. This paper presents a set of algorithms that can be deployed at the JRC system and can detect the presence of false targets. The presence of a false target is detected depending on whether there is residual carrier frequency offset (CFO) beyond Doppler in the received signal, with a Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT). To evaluate the performance of our approach we measure the dete…
Inter-carrier interference (ICI) poses a significant challenge for OFDM joint radar-communications (JRC) systems in high-mobility scenarios. The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the most widely adopted schemes in wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and LTE due to its high transmission rates, and the robustness against Intersymbol Interference (ISI). However, OFDM is highly sensitive to synchronism errors, which affects the orthogonality of the carriers. We analyzed several synchronization algorithms based on the correlation of the preamble symbols through the implementation in Software-Defined Radio (SDR) using the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). Such an implementation was performed in three s…
In this paper we describe the overall idea and results of a recently proposed radio access technique based on filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) communication system using two orthogonal polarizations: dual-polarization FBMC (DP-FBMC). Using this system we can alleviate the intrinsic interference problem in FBMC systems. This enables use of all the multicarrier techniques used in cyclic-prefix orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) systems for channel equalization, multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) processing, etc., without using the extra processing required for conventional FB…
The ability to cancel an OFDM signal is important to many wireless communication systems including Power-Domain Non-orthogonal Multiple Access (PD-NOMA), Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA), and spectrum underlay for dynamic spectrum access. In this paper, we show that estimating the windowing applied at the transmitter is important to that cancellation. Windowing at the transmitter is a popular means to control the bandwidth of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) symbol and is overlooked in most literature on OFDM signal cancellation. We show the limitation to the amount of …
In this paper, we focus on the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-enhanced two-way device-to-device (D2D) multi-pair orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems. Specifically, we maximize the minimum bidirectional weighted sum-rate by jointly optimizing the sub-band allocation, the power allocation and the discrete phase shift (PS) design at the RIS. To tackle the main difficulty of the non-convex PS design at the RIS, we firstly formulate a semi-definite relaxation problem and further devise a low-complexity solution for the PS design by leveraging the projec…
Filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC) offers superior spectral properties compared to cyclic-prefix orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CP-OFDM), at the cost of an inherent shortcoming in dispersive channels called intrinsic imaginary interference. In this paper we propose a new FBMC based communication system using two orthogonal polarizations for wireless communication systems: dual-polarization FBMC (DP-FBMC). Using this system we can significantly suppress the FBMC intrinsic interference. Therefore in DP-FBMC all the multicarrier techniques used in CP-OFDM systems such as channel equali…

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems have aroused extensive research interests due to the controllable communication environment and the performance of combating multi-path interference. However, as the premise of RIS-assisted OFDM systems, the accuracy of channel estimation is severely degraded by the increased possibility of insufficient cyclic prefix (CP) produced by extra cascaded channels of RIS and the nonlinear distortion lead by imperfect hardware. To address these issues, an enhanced extreme learning machine (ELM)-…
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based reflection modulation has been considered as a promising information delivery mechanism, and has the potential to realize passive information transfer of a RIS without consuming any additional radio frequency chain and time/frequency/energy resources. The existing on-off reflection modulation (ORM) schemes are based on manipulating the "on/off" states of RIS elements, which may lead to the degradation of RIS reflection efficiency. This paper proposes a frequency reflection modulation (FRM) method for RIS-aided OFDM systems. The FRM-OFDM scheme mod…

This paper considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) relaying system, and investigates the joint design of RIS passive beamforming and subcarrier matching under two cases, where Case-I ignores the source-RIS-destination signal, while Case-II explores this signal for rate enhancement. We formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINIP) problem to maximize the sum achievable rate of all subcarriers by jointly optimizing the passive beamforming and subcarrier matching. To solve this problem, we first develop a branch-and-bo…
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for establishing spectral- and energy-efficient wireless networks. In this paper, we study RIS-enhanced orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communications, which generalize the existing RIS-driven context focusing only on frequency-flat channels. Firstly, we introduce the delay adjustable metasurface (DAM) relying on varactor diodes. In contrast to existing reflecting elements, each one in DAM is capable of storing and retrieving the impinging electromagnetic waves upon dynamically controlling its electromagnetica…
This paper proposes a scalable channel estimation and reflection optimization framework for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-enhanced orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Specifically, the proposed scheme firstly generates a training set of RIS reflection coefficient vectors offline. For each RIS reflection coefficient vector in the training set, the proposed scheme estimates only the end-to-end composite channel and then performs the transmit power allocation. As a result, the RIS reflection optimization is simplified by searching for the optimal reflection coeff…
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can potentially combat jamming attacks by diffusing jamming signals. This paper jointly optimizes user selection, channel allocation, modulation-coding, and RIS configuration in a multiuser OFDMA system under a jamming attack. This problem is non-trivial and has never been addressed, because of its mixed-integer programming nature and difficulties in acquiring channel state information (CSI) involving the RIS and jammer. We propose a new deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach, which learns only through changes in the received data rates of t…
