This paper presents a novel context-aware image denoising algorithm that combines an adaptive image smoothing technique and color reduction techniques to remove perturbation from adversarial images. Adaptive image smoothing is achieved using auto-threshold canny edge detection to produce an accurate edge map used to produce a blurred image that preserves more edge features. The proposed algorithm then uses color reduction techniques to reconstruct the image using only a few representative colors. Through this technique, the algorithm can reduce the effects of adversarial perturbations on images. We also discuss experimental data on classification accuracy. Our results showed that the proposed approach reduces adversarial perturbation in adversarial attacks and increases the robustness of the deep convolutional neural network models.
We introduce an edge detection and recovery framework based on open active contour models (snakelets). This is motivated by the noisy or broken edges output by standard edge detection algorithms, like Canny. The idea is to utilize the local continuity and smoothness cues provided by strong edges and grow them to recover the missing edges. This way, the strong edges are used to recover weak or missing edges by considering the local edge structures, instead of blindly linking them if gradient magnitudes are above some threshold. We initialize short snakelets on the gradient magnitudes or binary …
This paper presents a method to differentiate the foreground objects from the background of a color image. Firstly a color image of any size is input for processing. The algorithm converts it to a grayscale image. Next we apply canny edge detector to find the boundary of the foreground object. We concentrate to find the maximum distance between each boundary pixel column wise and row wise and we fill the region that is bound by the edges. Thus we are able to extract the grayscale values of pixels that are in the bounded region and convert the grayscale image back to original color image contai…
Edge detection is one of the most critical tasks in automatic image analysis. There exists no universal edge detection method which works well under all conditions. This paper shows the new approach based on the one of the most efficient techniques for edge detection, which is entropy-based thresholding. The main advantages of the proposed method are its robustness and its flexibility. We present experimental results for this method, and compare results of the algorithm against several leading edge detection methods, such as Canny, LOG, and Sobel. Experimental results demonstrate that the prop…

This paper discusses a vehicle prototype that recognizes streets' lanes and plans its motion accordingly without any human input. Pi Camera 1.3 captures real-time video, which is then processed by Raspberry-Pi 3.0 Model B. The image processing algorithms are written in Python 3.7.4 with OpenCV 4.2. Arduino Uno is utilized to control the PID algorithm that controls the motor controller, which in turn controls the wheels. Algorithms that are used to detect the lanes are the Canny edge detection algorithm and Hough transformation. Elementary algebra is used to draw the detected lanes. After detec…
Unmanned vehicle technologies are an area of great interest in theory and practice today. These technologies have advanced considerably after the first applications have been implemented and cause a rapid change in human life. Autonomous vehicles are also a big part of these technologies. The most important action of a driver has to do is to follow the lanes on the way to the destination. By using image processing and artificial intelligence techniques, an autonomous vehicle can move successfully without a driver help. They can go from the initial point to the specified target by applying pre-…

Image de-fencing is one of the important aspects of recreational photography in which the objective is to remove the fence texture present in an image and generate an aesthetically pleasing version of the same image without the fence texture. In this paper, we aim to develop an automated and effective technique for fence removal and image reconstruction using conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs). These networks have been successfully applied in several domains of Computer Vision focusing on image generation and rendering. Our initial approach is based on a two-stage architecture…
In this paper we propose an edge-direct visual odometry algorithm that efficiently utilizes edge pixels to find the relative pose that minimizes the photometric error between images. Prior work on exploiting edge pixels instead treats edges as features and employ various techniques to match edge lines or pixels, which adds unnecessary complexity. Direct methods typically operate on all pixel intensities, which proves to be highly redundant. In contrast our method builds on direct visual odometry methods naturally with minimal added computation. It is not only more efficient than direct dense m…
In the emerging advancement in the branch of autonomous robotics, the ability of a robot to efficiently localize and construct maps of its surrounding is crucial. This paper deals with utilizing thermal-infrared cameras, as opposed to conventional cameras as the primary sensor to capture images of the robot's surroundings. For localization, the images need to be further processed before feeding them to a navigational system. The main motivation of this paper was to develop an edge detection methodology capable of utilizing the low-SNR poor output from such a thermal camera and effectively dete…

Chest X-ray (CXR) is a widely performed radiology examination that helps to detect abnormalities in the tissues and organs in the thoracic cavity. Detecting pulmonary abnormalities like COVID-19 may become difficult due to that they are obscured by the presence of bony structures like the ribs and the clavicles, thereby resulting in screening/diagnostic misinterpretations. Automated bone suppression methods would help suppress these bony structures and increase soft tissue visibility. In this study, we propose to build an ensemble of convolutional neural network models to suppress bones in fro…
This paper proposes a novel selective autoencoder approach within the framework of deep convolutional networks. The crux of the idea is to train a deep convolutional autoencoder to suppress undesired parts of an image frame while allowing the desired parts resulting in efficient object detection. The efficacy of the framework is demonstrated on a critical plant science problem. In the United States, approximately $1 billion is lost per annum due to a nematode infection on soybean plants. Currently, plant-pathologists rely on labor-intensive and time-consuming identification of Soybean Cyst Nem…

Adversarial attacks against deep learning-based object detectors have been studied extensively in the past few years. Most of the attacks proposed have targeted the model's integrity (i.e., caused the model to make incorrect predictions), while adversarial attacks targeting the model's availability, a critical aspect in safety-critical domains such as autonomous driving, have not yet been explored by the machine learning research community. In this paper, we propose a novel attack that negatively affects the decision latency of an end-to-end object detection pipeline. We craft a universal adve…
