Strong, electromagnetic, and weak forces were unified in the Standard Model (SM) with spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking. These forces were further conjectured to be unified in a simple Lie group gauge interaction in the Grand Unification (GUT). In this work, we propose a theory beyond the SM and GUT by adding new gapped Topological Phase Sectors consistent with the nonperturbative global anomaly cancellation and cobordism constraints (especially from the baryon minus lepton number ${\bf B}-{\bf L}$, the electroweak hypercharge $Y$, and the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly). Gapped Topological Phase Sectors are constructed via symmetry extension, whose low energy contains unitary Lorentz invariant topological quantum field theories (TQFTs): either 3+1d non-invertible TQFT, or 4+1d invertible or non-invertible TQFT (short-range or long-range entangled gapped phase). Alternatively, there could also be right-handed "sterile" neutrinos, gapless unparticle physics, more general interacting conformal field theories, or gravity with topological cobordism constraints, or their combinations to altogether cancel the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly. We propose that a new high-energy physics frontier beyond the conventional 0d particle physics relies on the new Topological Force and Topological Matter including gapped extended objects (gapped 1d line and 2d surface operators or defects, etc., whose open ends carry deconfined fractionalized particle or anyonic string excitations) or gapless conformal matter. Physical characterizations of these gapped extended objects require the mathematical theories of cohomology, cobordism, or category. Although weaker than the weak force, Topological Force is infinite-range or long-range which does not decay in the distance, and mediates between the linked worldvolume trajectories via fractional or categorical statistical interactions.
A recent work [2006.16996] suggests that a 4d nonperturbative global anomaly of mod 16 class hinting a possible new hidden gapped topological sector beyond the Standard Model (SM) and Georgi-Glashow $su(5)$ Grand Unified Theory (GUT) with 15n chiral Weyl fermions and a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_{4,X}$ symmetry of $X=5({\bf B- L})-4Y$. This $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ class global anomaly is a mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly between the discrete $X$ and spacetime backgrounds. The new topological sector has a GUT scale high energy gap, below its low energy encodes either a 4d noninvertible topological quantu…
We classify and characterize all invertible anomalies and all allowed topological terms related to various Standard Models (SM), Grand Unified Theories (GUT), and Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics. By all anomalies, we mean the inclusion of (1) perturbative/local anomalies captured by perturbative Feynman diagram loop calculations, classified by $\mathbb{Z}$ free classes, and (2) non-perturbative/global anomalies, classified by finite group $\mathbb{Z}_N$ torsion classes. Our work built from [arXiv:1812.11967] fuses the math tools of Adams spectral sequence, Thom-Madsen-Tillmann spectra, and…
The ultimate dream of unification models consists in combining both gauge and Yukawa couplings into one unified coupling. This is achieved by using a supersymmetric exceptional ${\rm E}_6$ gauge symmetry together with asymptotic unification in compact five-dimensional space-time. The ultraviolet fixed point requires exactly three fermion generations: one in the bulk, and the two light ones localised on the ${\rm SO}(10)$ boundary in order to cancel gauge anomalies. A second option allows to preserve baryon number and to lower the compactification scale down to the typical scales of the interme…
We analize the impact of two-loop renormalization group equations on the $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_w\times U(1)_Y$ gauge couplings unification in various supersymmetric theories. In general the presence of superfields in higher representation than the doublet spoil the gauge couplings unification at one-loop. The situation is more interesting when the renormalization group equations are calculated at two-loop. In this case we show that the unification of the gauge couplings can be achieved for models with triplet superfield(s). In the analysis of the models with triplet superfield(s) we show that t…
Standard lore uses local anomalies to check the kinematic consistency of gauge theories coupled to chiral fermions, e.g. Standard Models (SM). Based on a systematic cobordism classification, we examine constraints from invertible quantum anomalies (including all perturbative local and nonperturbative global anomalies) for gauge theories. We also clarify the different uses of these anomalies: including (1) anomaly cancellations of dynamical gauge fields, (2) 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions of background fields of global symmetries, and others. We apply several 4d $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$ anomaly c…
A proton is known for its longevity, but what is its lifetime? While many Grand Unified Theories predict the proton decay with a finite lifetime, we show that the Standard Model (SM) and some versions of Ultra Unification (which replace sterile neutrinos with new exotic gapped/gapless sectors, e.g., topological or conformal field theory under global anomaly cancellation constraints) with a discrete baryon plus lepton symmetry permit a stable proton. For the 4d SM with $N_f$ families of 15 or 16 Weyl fermions, in addition to the continuous baryon minus lepton U(1)$_{\bf B - L}$ symmetry, there …
Phenomenologically appealing supersymmetric grand unified theories have large gauge representations and thus are not asymptotically free. Their ultraviolet validity is limited by the appearance of a Landau pole well before the Planck scale. One could hope that these theories save themselves, before the inclusion of gravity, by generating an interacting ultraviolet fixed point, similar to the one recently discovered in non-supersymmetric gauge-Yukawa theories. Employing a-maximization, a-theorem, unitarity bounds, as well as positivity of other central charges we nonperturbatively rule out this…
We present a new grand unification paradigm, where gauge couplings do not need to be equal at any given scale, instead they run towards the same fixed point in the deep ultraviolet. We provide a concrete example based on SU(5) with a compactified extra space dimension. By construction, fermions are embedded in different SU(5) bulk fields, hence baryon number is conserved and proton decay is forbidden. The lightest Kaluza-Klein tier consists of stable states, providing an asymmetric Dark Matter candidate via their baryonic charges, with a mass of 2.4 TeV. The model features an interesting and p…
Matter Unification in Warped Supersymmetric SO(10)
We investigate the possibility to find an ultraviolet completion of the simple extensions of the Standard Model where baryon number is a local symmetry. In the context of such theories one can understand the spontaneous breaking of baryon number at the low scale and the proton stability. We find a simple theory based on SU(4)_C x SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R where baryon number is embedded in a non-Abelian gauge symmetry. We discuss the main features of the theory and the possible implications for experiments. This theory predicts stable colored and/or fractional electric charged fields which can give ri…
The quantum chromodynamics axion with a decay constant near the Grand Unification (GUT) scale has an ultralight mass near a neV. We show, however, that axion-like particles with masses near the keV - PeV range with GUT-scale decay constants are also well motivated in that they naturally arise from axiverse theories with dark non-abelian gauge groups. We demonstrate that the correct dark matter abundance may be achieved by the heavy axions in these models through the misalignment mechanism in combination with a period of early matter domination from the long-lived dark glueballs of the same gau…
We study bosonic systems on a spacetime lattice defined by path integrals of commuting fields. We introduce branch-independent bosonic (BIB) systems, whose path integral is independent of the branch structure of the spacetime simplicial complex, even for a spacetime with boundaries. In contrast, a generic lattice bosonic (GLB) system's path integral may depend on the branch structure. We find the invertible topological order characterized by the Stiefel-Whitney cocycle (e.g., 4+1d w$_2$w$_3$) to be nontrivial for BIB systems, but this topological order and a trivial gapped tensor product state…
