We construct families of $CAT(0)$ groups containing finitely presented groups whose divergence functions are of the form $r^α$ for a dense set of exponents $α\in [2,\infty)$ and $r^q\log(r)$ for integers $q \geq 2$. The same construction also yields examples of $CAT(0)$ groups containing contracting elements which are not contracting in certain finitely presented subgroups.
We generalize the concept of divergence of finitely generated groups by introducing the upper and lower relative divergence of a finitely generated group with respect to a subgroup. Upper relative divergence generalizes Gersten's notion of divergence, and lower relative divergence generalizes a definition of Cooper-Mihalik. While the lower divergence of Cooper-Mihalik can only be linear or exponential, relative lower divergence can be any polynomial or exponential function. In this paper, we examine the relative divergence (both upper and lower) of a group with respect to a normal subgroup or …
We construct families of finitely presented groups exhibiting new divergence behavior; we obtain divergence functions of the form $r^α$ for a dense set of exponents $α\in [2,\infty)$ and $r^n\log(r)$ for integers $n \geq 2$. The same construction also yields examples of finitely presented groups which contain Morse elements that are not contracting.
We compute the divergence of the finitely generated group SLn(O_S), where S is a finite set of valuations of a function field, and O_S is the corresponding ring of S-integer points. As an application, we deduce that all its asymptotic cones are without cut-points.
Behrstock and Druţu raised a question about the existence of Morse geodesics in $CAT(0)$ spaces with divergence function strictly greater than $r^n$ and strictly less than $r^{n+1}$, where $n$ is an integer greater than $1$. In this paper, we answer the question of Behrstock and Druţu by showing that for each real number $s\geq 2$, there is a $CAT(0)$ space $X$ with a proper and cocompact action of some finitely generated group such that $X$ contains a Morse bi-infinite geodesic with the divergence equivalent to $r^s$.
We construct a family of finite 2-complexes whose universal covers are CAT(0) and have polynomial divergence of desired degree. This answers a question of Gersten, namely whether such CAT(0) complexes exist.
We introduce the notion of k-lower divergence for geodesic rays in CAT(0) spaces. Building on the work of Charney and Sultan we give various characterizations of k-contracting geodesic rays using k-lower divergence and k-slim triangles. We also characterize k-contracting geodesic rays in CAT(0) cube complexes using sequences of well-separated hyperplanes.
We construct new examples of CAT(0) groups containing non finitely presented subgroups that are of type $FP_2$, these CAT(0) groups do not contain copies of $\mathbb{Z}^3$. We also give a construction of groups which are of type $F_n$ but not $F_{n+1}$ with no free abelian subgroups of rank greater than $\lceil\frac{n}{3}\rceil$.
In the first part, we prove that the dominion (in the sense of Isbell) of a subgroup of a finitely generated nilpotent group is trivial in the category of all nilpotent groups. In the second part, we show that the dominion of a subgroup of a finitely generated nilpotent group of class two is trivial in the category of all metabelian nilpotent groups.
In universal algebraic geometry the category of the finite generated free algebras of some fixed variety of algebras and the quotient group A/Y are very important. Here A is a group of all automorphisms of this category and Y is a group of all inner automorphisms of this category. In the varieties of all the groups, all the abelian groups (see B. Plotkin and G. Zhitomirski, 2006), all the nilpotent groups of the class no more then n (see A. Tsurkov, 2007) the group A/Y is trivial. B. Plotkin posed a question: "Is there a subvariety of the variety of all the groups, such that the group A/Y in t…
We introduce a new quasi-isometry invariant, called the divergence spectrum, to study finitely generated groups. We compare the concept of divergence spectrum with the other classical notions of divergence and we examine the divergence spectra of relatively hyperbolic groups. We show the existence of an infinite collection of right-angled Coxeter groups which all have exponential divergence but they all have different divergence spectra. We also study Morse boundaries of relatively hyperbolic groups and examine their connection with Bowditch boundaries.
The aim of this note is to give an easy example of a finitely presented group that cannot act without a fix point on a CAT(0) space of finite dimension. Such an example has been recently constructed by Arjantseva et al., using other techniques
In this paper we provide a framework for the study of isoperimetric problems in finitely generated group, through a combinatorial study of universal covers of compact simplicial complexes. We show that, when estimating filling functions, one can restrict to simplicial spheres of particular shapes, called "round" and "unfolded", provided that a bounded quasi-geodesic combing exists. We prove that the problem of estimating higher dimensional divergence as well can be restricted to round spheres. Applications of these results include a combinatorial analogy of the Federer--Fleming inequality for …
We show that every graph product of finitely generated abelian groups acts properly and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cubical complex. The complex generalizes (up to subdivision) the Salvetti complex of a right-angled Artin group and the Coxeter complex of a right-angled Coxeter group. In the right-angled Artin group case it is related to the embedding into a right-angled Coxeter group described by Davis and Januszkiewicz. We compare the approaches and also adapt the argument that the action extends to finite index supergroup that is a graph product of finite groups.
We prove some conditions for higher dimensional algebraic fibering of pro-$p$ group extensions and we establish corollaries about incoherence of pro-$p$ groups. In particular, if $G = K \rtimes Γ$ is a pro-$p$ group, $Γ$ a finitely generated free pro-$p$ group with $d(Γ) \geq 2$, $K$ a finitely presented pro-$p$ group with $N$ a normal pro-$p$ subgroup of $K$ such that $K/ N \simeq \mathbb{Z}_p$ and $N$ not finitely generated as a pro-$p$ group, then $G$ is incoherent (in the category of pro-$p$ groups). Furthermore we show that if $K$ is a free pro-$p$ group with $d(K) = 2$ then either $Aut_0…
We provide geometric conditions on a pair of hyperplanes of a CAT(0) cube complex that imply divergence bounds for the cube complex. As an application, we classify all right-angled Coxeter groups with quadratic divergence and show right-angled Coxeter groups cannot exhibit a divergence function between quadratic and cubic. This generalizes a theorem of Dani-Thomas that addressed the class of 2-dimensional right-angled Coxeter groups. As another application, we provide an inductive graph theoretic criteria on a right-angled Coxeter group's defining graph which allows us to recognize arbitrary i…
We show, under mild hypotheses, that if each element of a finitely generated group acting on a $2$-dimensional $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ complex has a fixed point, then there is a global fixed point. In particular all actions of finitely generated torsion groups on such complexes have global fixed points. The proofs rely on Masur's theorem on periodic trajectories in rational billiards, and Ballmann-Brin's methods for finding closed geodesics in $2$-dimensional locally $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ complexes. As another ingredient we prove that the image of an immersed loop in a graph of girth $2π$ with length no…
A JSJ-splitting of a group $G$ over a certain class of subgroups is a graph of groups decomposition of $G$ which describes all possible decompositions of $G$ as an amalgamated product or an HNN extension over subgroups lying in the given class. Such decompositions originated in 3-manifold topology. In this paper we generalize the JSJ-splitting constructions of Sela, Rips-Sela and Dunwoody-Sageev and we construct a JSJ-splitting for any finitely presented group with respect to the class of all slender subgroups along which the group splits. Our approach relies on Haefliger's theory of group act…
We show that the Basilica Thompson group introduced by Belk and Forrest is not finitely presented, and in fact is not of type FP_2. The proof involves developing techniques for proving non-simple connectedness of certain subcomplexes of CAT(0) cube complexes.
We construct 4-dimensional CAT(0) groups containing finitely presented subgroups whose Dehn functions are $\exp^{(n)}(x^m)$ for integers $n, m \geq 1$ and 6-dimensional CAT(0) groups containing finitely presented subgroups whose Dehn functions are $\exp^{(n)}(x^α)$ for integers $n \geq 1$ and $α$ dense in $[1,\infty)$. This significantly expands the known geometric behavior of subgroups of CAT(0) groups.
We show that the Hilbert space compression of any finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complex is 1 and deduce that any discrete group acting properly, co-compactly on a CAT(0) cube complex is exact. The class of groups covered by this theorem includes free groups, finitely generated Coxeter groups, finitely generated right angled Artin groups, finitely presented groups satisfying the B(4)-T(4) small cancellation condition and all those word-hyperbolic groups satisfying the B(6) condition. Another family of examples is provided by certain canonical surgeries defined by link diagrams.

We prove that almost all arc complexes do not admit a CAT(0) metric with finitely many shapes, in particular any finite-index subgroup of the mapping class group does not preserve such a metric on the arc complex. We also show the analogous statement for all but finitely many disc complexes of handlebodies and free splitting complexes of free groups. The obstruction is combinatorial. These complexes are all hyperbolic and contractible but despite this we show that they satisfy no combinatorial isoperimetric inequality: for any n there is a loop of length 4 that only bounds discs consisting of …
