In this work we study the collider phenomenology of color-octet scalars (sgluons) in supersymmetric models with Dirac gaugino masses that feature an explicitly broken $R$ symmetry ($R$-broken models). We construct such models by augmenting minimal $R$-symmetric models with a fairly general set of supersymmetric and softly supersymmetry-breaking operators that explicitly break $R$ symmetry. We then compute the rates of all significant two-body decays and highlight new features that appear as a result of $R$ symmetry breaking, including enhancements to extant decay rates, novel tree- and loop-level decays, and improved cross sections of single sgluon production. We demonstrate in some detail how the familiar results from minimal $R$-symmetric models can be obtained by restoring $R$ symmetry. In parallel to this discussion, we explore constraints on these models from the Large Hadron Collider. We find that, in general, $R$ symmetry breaking quantitatively affects existing limits on color-octet scalars, perhaps closing loopholes for light CP-odd (pseudoscalar) sgluons while opening one for a light CP-even (scalar) particle. Qualitatively, however, we find that -- much as for minimal $R$-symmetric models, despite stark differences in phenomenology -- scenarios with broken $R$ symmetry and two sgluons below the TeV scale can be accommodated by existing searches.
We reinterpret two recent LHC searches for events containing four top quarks ($t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$) in the context of supersymmetric models with Dirac gauginos and color-octet scalars (sgluons). We explore whether sgluon contributions to the four-top production cross section $σ(pp \to t\bar{t}t\bar{t})$ can accommodate an excess of four-top events recently reported by the ATLAS collaboration. We also study constraints on these models from an ATLAS search for new phenomena with jets and missing transverse energy ($E_{\text{T}}^{\text{miss}}$) sensitive to signals with four top quarks. We find tha…
It has been claimed that Dirac gaugino masses are necessary for realistic models of low-scale supersymmetry breaking, and yet very little attention has been paid to the phenomenology of a light gravitino when gauginos have Dirac masses. We begin to address this deficit by investigating the couplings and phenomenology of the gravitino in the effective Lagrangian approach. We pay particular attention to the phenomenology of the scalar octets, where new decay channels open up. This leads us to propose a new simplified effective scenario including only light gluinos, sgluons and gravitinos, allowi…
We study a scenario that a hidden gaugino dark matter decays into the standard-model particles (and their supersymmetric partners) through a kinetic mixing with the gaugino of a U(1)B-L broken at a scale close to the grand unification scale. We show that decay of the hidden gaugino can explain excesses in the cosmic-ray electrons and positrons observed by PAMELA and Fermi.
10 and 27 SU(3) multiplets of hexaquarks states with baryon number B=2, known as dibaryons, are considered. Previous analyses are complemented and sum rules for strong decay amplitudes with SU(3) symmetry violation up to the first order are determined for the 10 and 27 dibaryon multiplets into a baryon octet plus a baryon decuplet and for the dibaryon 27 into two baryon octets.
The color gauge hyper-multiplet in N=2 supersymmetry consists of the usual N=1 gauge vector/gaugino super-multiplet, joined with a novel gaugino/scalar super-multiplet. Large cross sections are predicted for the production of pairs of the color-octet scalars $σ$ [sgluons] at the LHC: $gg, q\bar{q} \to σσ^{\ast}$. Single $σ$ production is possible at one-loop level, but the $g g\to σ$ amplitude vanishes in the limit of degenerate $L$ and $R$ squarks. When kinematically allowed, $σ$ decays predominantly into two gluinos, whose cascade decays give rise to a burst of eight or more jets together wi…
The vacuum of QCD is characterized by the Higgs mechanism. Color is ``spontaneously broken'' by a quark-antiquark condensate in the octet representation. The massive gluons carry integer electric charges and are identified with the vector mesons. The fermionic excitations consist of the low mass baryon octet and a singlet. The interactions between these particles and the light pseudoscalar octet are largely determined by chiral symmetry and a nonlinear local symmetry. A consistent phenomenological picture of strong interactions at long distances arises from a simple effective action.
Models of supersymmetry with Dirac gauginos provide an attractive scenario for physics beyond the standard model. The "supersoft" radiative corrections and suppressed SUSY production at colliders provide for more natural theories and an understanding of why no new states have been seen. Unfortunately, these models are handicapped by a tachyon which is naturally present in existing models of Dirac gauginos. We argue that this tachyon is absent, with the phenomenological successes of the model preserved, if the right handed gaugino is a (pseudo-)Goldstone field of a spontaneously broken anomalou…
We calculate the width difference of the scalar electron decay, $Γ(\tilde e_L \to e_Lω) - Γ({\bar{\tilde e}}_L \to \bar e_Lω)$ in the softly broken supersymmetrized standard model. The CP asymmetry is assumed to arise from the complex gaugino masses. Even in limit that the electron mass $m_e$ is vanishing, the difference can be of the order of $α$.
The set of renormalisation group equations to two loop order for general supersymmetric theories broken by soft and supersoft operators is completed. As an example, the explicit expressions for the RGEs in a Dirac gaugino extension of the (N)MSSM are presented.
We investigate the gravitational form factors of the baryon octet within the framework of the SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model, considering the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking, and the corresponding energy-momentum tensor distributions. We examine the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking to the mass, angular momentum, pressure, and shear force distributions of the baryon octet. We first find that a heavier baryon is energetically more compact than a lighter one. For the spin distributions of the baryon octet, they are properly normalized to their spins and are decomposed into th…
The requirement of Yukawa coupling unification highly constrains the SUSY parameter space. In several SUSY breaking scenarios it is hard to reconcile Yukawa coupling unification with experimental constraints from B(b->s gamma) and the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_mu. We show that b-tau or even t-b-tau Yukawa unification can be satisfied simultaneously with b->s gamma and a_mu in the non-universal gaugino mediation scenario. Non-universal gaugino masses naturally appear in higher dimensional grand unified models in which gauge symmetry is broken by orbifold compactification. Relations betwe…
Under a few mild assumptions, N=1 supersymmetry in four dimensions is shown to be spontaneously broken in a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation of BCS/NJL type to one-loop off-shell, in the gauge theory specified by the gauge kinetic function and the superpotential of adjoint chiral superfields, in particular, that possesses N=2 extended supersymmetry spontaneously broken to N=1 at tree level. The N=2 gauginos receive mixed Majorana-Dirac masses and are split. We derive an explicit form of the gap equation, showing the existence of a nontrivial solution.
What symmetry breaking would be required for gauginos from a supersymmetric theory to behave like left-handed quarks of the Standard Model? Starting with a supersymmetric SU(3)xSU(3)xU(1)xU(1) gauge theory, the 18 adjoint-representation gauginos are replaced with 2 families of 9 gauginos in the (3,3*) representation of the group. After this explicit breaking of supersymmetry, two-loop quadratic divergences still cancel at a unification scale. Coupling constant unification is supported by deriving the theory from an SU(3)xSU(3)xSU(3)xSU(3) Grand Unified Theory (GUT). Sin^2 of the Weinberg angle…
We perform the first analysis of Dark Matter scenarios in a constrained model with Dirac Gauginos. The model under investigation is the Constrained Minimal Dirac Gaugino Supersymmetric Standard model (CMDGSSM) where the Majorana mass terms of gauginos vanish. However, $R$-symmetry is broken in the Higgs sector by an explicit and/or effective $B_μ$-term. This causes a mass splitting between Dirac states in the fermion sector and the neutralinos, which provide the dark matter candidate, become pseudo-Dirac states. We discuss two scenarios: the universal case with all scalar masses unified at the…
If supersymmetry is dynamically broken in a hidden sector, the gauginos typically have unacceptably small masses. This situation can be corrected if a non-Abelian gauge interaction becomes strong at a scale of order 1 TeV and induces dynamical gaugino masses. We discuss the typical signals of this scenario at present and future colliders.
We study the duality cascade of softly broken supersymmetric theories. We investigate the renormalization group (RG) flow of SUSY breaking terms as well as supersymmetric couplings. It is found that the magnitudes of SUSY breaking terms are suppressed in most regimes of the RG flow through the duality cascade. At one stage of cascading, the gaugino mass of the strongly coupled sector and scalar masses converge to certain values, which are determined by the gauge coupling and the gaugino mass of the weakly coupled sector. At the next stage, the strongly and weakly coupled sectors are interchang…
We study dynamical gaugino condensation in superstring effective theories using the linear multiplet representation for the dilaton superfield. An interesting necessary condition for the dilaton to be stabilized, which was first derived in generic models of static gaugino condensation, is shown to hold for generic models of dynamical gaugino condensation. We also point out that it is stringy non-perturbative effects that stabilize the dilaton and allow dynamical supersymmetry breaking via the field-theoretical non-perturbative effect of gaugino condensation. As a typical example, a toy S-dual …
Inclusive hadro production in e^+ e^- annihilation processes is examined to study the fragmentation process. A broken SU(3) model is used to determine the quark and gluon fragmentation functions of octet vector mesons, ρand K^*, in a simple way with an SU(3) breaking parameter λ. These are expressed in terms of just two light quark fragmentation functions, V(x, Q2) and γ(x, Q2) and the gluon fragmentation function Dg(x, Q2). These functions are parameterized at the low input scale of Q0^2 = 1.5 GeV2, evolved through LO DGLAP evolution including charm and bottom flavour at appropriate threshold…
We investigate the possibility that gauginos are massless at tree level and that the U(1) R-invariance is broken spontaneously by Higgs vevs, like the chiral symmetry of quarks in the standard model, or else explicitly by dimension 2 or 3 SUSY-breaking terms in the low energy effective Lagrangian. Gluino and lightest neutralino masses then depend on only a few parameters. For a SUSY-breaking scale <~ 400 GeV, the gluino and lightest neutralino have masses typically in the range 1/10 ~ 2 1/2 GeV. On the other hand, for a SUSY-breaking scale several TeV or larger, radiative contributions can yie…
The decays of the antisymmetric dibaryon octet $D(8_F)$ into two baryon octets are considered. Sum rules for these decays in first order broken SU(3) are given. An SU(4) extension of the analysis is commented upon. Possibilities for the experimental observation of multibaryon and anti-multibaryon states is pointed out.
We analyze a supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking model proposed by Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih in a supergravity (SUGRA) framework. This is a simple and natural setup which demands neither extra superpotential interactions nor an additional gauge symmetry. In the SUGRA setup, the U(1)R symmetry is explicitly broken by the constant term in the superpotential, and pseudo-moduli field naturally takes non-zero vacuum expectation value through a vanishing cosmological constant condition. Sfermions tend to be heavier than gauginos, and the strong-coupling scale is determined once a ratio of sfermion to…
We consider supersymmetric theories where the standard-model quark and lepton fields are localized on a "3-brane" in extra dimensions, while the gauge and Higgs fields propagate in the bulk. If supersymmetry is broken on another 3-brane, supersymmetry breaking is communicated to gauge and Higgs fields by direct higher-dimension interactions, and to quark and lepton fields via standard-model loops. We show that this gives rise to a realistic and predictive model for supersymmetry breaking. The size of the extra dimensions is required to be of order 10-100 times larger than fundamental scale (e.…
We argue that supersymmetry breaking by gaugino condensation in the strongly coupled heterotic string can be described by an analogue of Scherk-Schwarz compactification on the eleventh dimension in M-theory. The M-theory scale is identified with the gauge coupling unification mass, whereas the radius of the eleventh dimension $ρ$ is at an intermediate scale $ρ^{-1}\sim 10^{12}$ GeV. At the lowest order, supersymmetry is broken only in the gravitational and moduli sector at a scale $m_{3/2}\simρ^{-1}$, while it is mediated by gravitational interactions to the observable world. Computation of th…
We consider five dimensional supersymmetric warped scenarios in which the Standard Model quark and lepton fields are localized on the ultraviolet brane, while the Standard Model gauge fields propagate in the bulk. Supersymmetry is assumed to be broken on the infrared brane. The relative sizes of supersymmetry breaking effects are found to depend on the hierarchy between the infrared scale and the weak scale. If the infrared scale is much larger than the weak scale the leading supersymmetry breaking effect on the visible brane is given by gaugino mediation. The gaugino masses at the weak scale …
We consider the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model allowing both Dirac and Majorana gauginos. The Dirac masses are obtained by pairing up extra chiral multiplets: a singlet S for U(1)_Y, a triplet T for SU(2) and an octet O for SU(3) with the respective gauginos. The electroweak symmetry breaking sector is modified by the couplings of the new fields S and T to the Higgs doublets. We discuss two limits: i) both the adjoint scalars are decoupled with the main effect being the modification of the Higgs quartic coupling; ii) the singlet remaining light, and due to its direct co…
We consider supersymmetry breaking models in which the MSSM is extended to include an additional chiral adjoint field for each gauge group with which the the MSSM gauginos acquire Dirac masses. We investigate a framework in which the Standard Model gauge fields propagate in the bulk of a warped extra dimension while quarks and leptons are localized on the ultraviolet brane. The adjoint fields are localized on the infrared brane, where supersymmetry is broken in a hidden sector. This setup naturally suppresses potentially large flavor violating effects, while allowing perturbative gauge couplin…
If the narrow exotic baryon resonances $Θ^+(1540)$ and $Ξ_{{3/2}(1862)$ are members of the $J^P = {1/2}1/2^+$ antidecuplet with $N^*(1710)$, the octet-antidecuplet mixing is required not only by the mass spectrum but also by the decay pattern of $N^*(1710)$. This casts doubt on validity of the $Θ^+$ mass prediciton by the chiral soliton model. While all pieces of the existing experimental information point to a small octet-antidecuplet mixing, the magnitude of mixing required by the mass spectrum is not consistent with the value needed to account for the hadronic decay rates. The discrepancy i…
We study softly broken N=1 supersymmetric QCD with the gauge group $SU(N_c)$ and $N_f$ flavours of quarks for $N_f > N_c+1$. We investigate the phase structure of its dual theory adding generic soft supersymmetry breking terms, i.e. soft scalar masses, trilinear coupling terms of scalar fields and gaugino masses. It is found that the trilinear coupling terms play an improtant role in determining the potential minima. Also we compare softly broken original and dual theories in the broken phase.
In a previous paper, we presented a model in which the {\em same} modulus field breaks SUSY and a simple GUT gauge group, and which has {\em dynamical} origins for {\em both} SUSY breaking and GUT scales. In this model, the supergravity (SUGRA) and gauge mediated (GM) contributions to MSSM scalar and gaugino masses are comparable - this enables a realistic spectrum to be attained since GM contribution to the right-handed (RH) slepton (mass)^2 by itself (i.e., neglecting SUGRA contribution to sfermion {\em and} gaugino masses) is negative. But, in general, the SUGRA contribution to sfermion mas…
The chiral quark model with a broken U(3) symmetry gives a simple and unified account for the proton spin and flavor puzzles, as well as the octet baryon magnetic moments.
The existence of colour-octet scalar states, often dubbed sgluons, is predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, such as supersymmetric realisations featuring Dirac gauginos. Such states have a large pair-production rate at hadron colliders and mainly decay into pairs of jets and top quarks. Consequently, they represent a primary target for experimental searches for new resonances in the multijet and multitop channels at the Large Hadron Collider. Adopting a phenomenologically-motivated simplified model, we reinterpret the results of a recent experimental search fo…
One can define generalized models of gaugino condensation as theories which dynamically break a discrete R-symmetry, but do not break supersymmetry. We consider general examples consisting of gauge and matter fields, and the minimal number of gauge singlet fields to avoid flat directions in the potential. We explore which R-symmetries can arise, and their spontaneous breaking. In general, we find that the discrete symmetry is $\mathbb{Z}_{2b_0R}$ and the number of supersymmetric vacua is $b_0$, where $b_0$ is the coefficient of the one-loop beta function. Results are presented for various grou…
We evaluate the $πN!N$, $πΣΣ$, $πΛΣ$, $KΛN$ and $K ΣN $ coupling constants and the corresponding monopole masses in lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks. The parameters representing the SU(3)-flavor symmetry are computed at the point where the three quark flavors are degenerate at the physical $s$-quark mass. In particular, we obtain $α\equiv F/(F+D)=0.395(6)$. The quark-mass dependences of the coupling constants are obtained by changing the $u$- and the $d$-quark masses. We find that the SU(3)-flavor parameters have weak quark-mass dependence and thus the SU(3)-flavor symmetry is …
Although eta-eta' mixing is qualitatively well understood as a consequence of the U(1)_A anomaly in QCD together with a broken SU(3) flavor symmetry, until recently the values of decay and mixing parameters of the eta and eta' were only approximately known, e.g. values for the octet-singlet mixing angle between -20 degrees and -10 degrees could be found in the literature. New experimental data, especially for the reactions gamma gamma* -> eta, eta' and B -> eta' K, together with new theoretical results from higher order corrections in chiral perturbation theory stimulated a phenomenological re…
Without any shred of evidence for new physics from LHC, the last hiding spots of natural electroweak supersymmetry seem to lie either in compressed spectra or in spectra where scalars are suppressed with respect to the gauginos. While in the MSSM (or in any theory where supersymmetry is broken by the $F$-vev of a chiral spurion), a hierarchy between scalar and gaugino masses requires special constructions, it is automatic in scenarios where supersymmetry is broken by $D$-vev of a real spurion. In the latter framework, gaugino mediated contributions to scalar soft masses are finite (loop suppre…
Supersymmetric relations between dimensionless couplings receive finite correction at one-loop when supersymmetry is broken softly. We calculate the $O(α_s)$ correction to the squark decay width to a quark and an electroweak gaugino, which is found to be nonvanishing. Logarithmic correction appears when the gluino is heavy.
We study the LHC search constraints on models that extend the Standard Model (SM) with an inert, complex scalar electroweak multiplet, $Σ$, with isospin T=5/2 (sextet) or T=7/2 (octet) and identical hypercharge to the SM Higgs doublet. Imposing a global $Z_2$ symmetry under which $Σ\to -Σ$, the lightest member of $Σ$ is stable and we require that it be neutral ($ζ^{0,r}$) to avoid cosmological constraints from charged relics. Pair production of scalars by electroweak interactions followed by cascade decays to $ζ^{0,r}$ through W and Z emission produces signatures similar to those of supersymme…
Chiral quark model with a broken-U(3) flavor symmetry can be interpreted as the effective theory of the instanton-dominated non-perturbative QCD. This naturally suggests the possibility of a negative singlet/octet coupling ratio, which has been found, in a previous publication, to be compatible with the phenomenological description of the nucleon spin-flavor structure.
We investigate gaugino condensation in the framework of the strongly coupled heterotic $E_8 \times E_8$ string (M--theory). Supersymmetry is broken in a hidden sector and gravitational interactions induce soft breaking parameters in the observable sector. The resulting soft masses are of order of the gravitino mass. The situation is similar to that in the weakly coupled $E_8 \times E_8$ theory with one important difference: we avoid the problem of small gaugino masses which are now comparable to the gravitino mass.
Four different supersymmetric models based on SU(2)_L X U(1)_R X U(1)_B-L and SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_B-L gauge symmetry groups are studied. U(1)_B-L symmetry is broken spontaneously by a vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a sneutrino field. The right-handed gauge bosons may obtain their mass solely by sneutrino VEV. The physical charged lepton and neutrino are mixtures of gauginos, higgsinos and lepton interaction eigenstates. Explicit formulae for masses and mixings in the physical lepton fields are found. The spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism fixes the trilinear R-parity breaking coup…
We show that supersymmetry can be broken mainly by hidden matter condensates in the observable matter direction in generic superstring models. This happens only when the fields whose VEVs give masses to hidden matter do not decouple at the condensation scale. We find how the parameters of the string model and the vacuum determine whether supersymmetry is broken mainly by hidden matter or gaugino condensates and in the matter or moduli directions.
The weakly-coupled heterotic string is known to have problems of dilaton/moduli stabilization, supersymmetry breaking (by hidden-sector gaugino condensation), gauge coupling unification (or the Newton's constant), QCD axion, as well as cosmological problems. We study these problems by adopting the viewpoint that they arise mostly due to our limited calculational power, little knowledge of the vacuum structure, and an inappropriate treatment of gaugino condensation. It turns out that these problems can be solved or are much less severe after a more consistent and complete treatment. There are t…
In the supersymmetric models with low scale supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking where the gravitino mass is around keV, we show that the 3.5 keV $X-$ray lines can be explained naturally through several different mechanisms: (I) A keV scale dark gaugino plays the role of sterile neutrino in the presence of bilinear $R-$partiy violation. Because the light dark gaugino obtains Majorana mass only via gravity mediation, it is a decaying warm dark matter (DM) candidate; (II) Compressed cold DM states, whose mass degeneracy is broken by gavity mediated SUSY breaking, emit such a line via the heavier one de…
We study aspects of Wess-Zumino models related to SUSY and R-symmetry breaking at tree-level. We present a recipe for constructing a wide class of tree-level SUSY and R-breaking models. We also deduce a general property shared by all tree-level SUSY breaking models that has broad application to model building. In particular, it explains why many models of direct gauge mediation have anomalously light gauginos (even if the R-symmetry is broken spontaneously by an order one amount). This suggests new approaches to dynamical SUSY breaking which can generate large enough gaugino masses.
R parity violation can induce mixing of the supersymmetric Higgs bosons with the sneutrinos at the tree level. We study the effect of this mixing on the decays of Higgs scalars as well as sneutrinos in an effective model where the violation of R parity is included in the minimal supersymmetric model through bilinear lepton number violating superpotential terms. We show that a small violation of R parity can lead to a sizeable branching ratio for the supersymmetric Higgs boson decay mode $H \to χ\ell$ (where $χ$ denotes an electroweak gaugino and $\ell$ is either a tau neutrino or a tau lepton)…
Scalar gluons -- or sgluons -- are color octet scalars without electroweak charges. They occur in supersymmetric models of Dirac gauginos as the scalar partners of the gluino and carry Standard-Model type R charge. This allows them to interact with ordinary matter and to be produced at the LHC, singly as well as in pairs. Sgluons dominantly decay into gluons, top pairs, and a top quark plus a light quark. A pair of sgluons decaying into like-sign tops would provide a striking signature at the LHC. In our discussion of this channel we especially focus on the proper treatment of QCD jets.
We propose that gaugino condensation in the hidden sector may dynamically induce intermediate gauge symmetry breaking and specify the compactification scale. We also show that this scheme makes possible affine level one grand unified string models with gauge breaking scale $M_{\rm GUT} \sim 10^{16}$ GeV. $T$-duality plays a crucial role in making this scheme possible, even though it is spontaneously broken. We also discuss the generation of the large mass hierarchy between the string scale and the electroweak scale and the solution of the dilaton runaway problem in this scheme.
We construct a minimal supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified model in 5 dimensions. The extra dimension is compactified on an S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2^\prime) orbifold which has two in-equivalent fixed points. These are flat 4-dimensional Minkowski spaces: the visible and the hidden branes. By orbifolding, the gauge symmetry on the hidden brane is reduced down to the Pati--Salam gauge symmetry SU(4) x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R. On the visible brane the SO(10) is broken by the ordinary Higgs mechanism down to SU(5). The resulting 4-dimensional theory has the standard model gauge symmetry (the intersection of SU(5)…
We recall how the idea of Softly Broken Supersymmetry led to the construction of the Supersymmetric Standard Model in 1981. Its first prediction, the supersymmetric unification of gauge couplings, was conclusively verified by the LEP and SLC experiments 10 years later. Its other predictions include: the existence of superparticles at the electroweak scale; a stable lightest superparticle (LSP) with a mass of $\sim 100$ GeV, anticipated to be a neutral electroweak gaugino; the universality of scalar and gaugino masses at the unification scale. The original motivation for the model, solving the …
We discuss spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in a model with an anomalous $U(1)_A$ symmetry. In this model, the size of the each term in the superpotential is controlled by the $U(1)_A$ charge assignment and SUSY is spontaneously broken via the Fayet-Iliopoulos of $U(1)_A$ at the meta-stable vacuum. In the global SUSY analysis, the gaugino masses become much smaller than the sfermion masses, because an approximate R-symmetry appears at the SUSY breaking vacuum. In this paper, we show that gaugino masses can be as large as gravitino mass, taking the supergravity effect into consideratio…
We show that in gauge mediation models with tree-level R-symmetry breaking where supersymmetry and R-symmetries are broken by different fields, the gaugino mass either vanishes at one loop or finds a contribution from loop-level R-symmetry breaking. Thus tree-level R-symmetry breaking for phenomenology is either no-go or redundant in the simplest type of models. Including explicit messenger mass terms in the superpotential with a particular R-charge arrangement is helpful to bypass the no-go theorem, and the resulting gaugino mass is suppressed by the messenger mass scale.
The WW scattering into gravitino and gaugino is here investigated in the broken phase, by using both gauge and mass eigenstates. Differently from what is obtained for unbroken gauge symmetry, we find in the scattering amplitudes new structures, which can lead to violation of unitarity above a certain scale. This happens because, in the annihilation diagram, the longitudinal degrees of freedom in the propagator of the gauge bosons disappear from the amplitude, by virtue of the SUGRA vertex. We show that the longitudinal polarizations of the on-shell W become strongly interacting in the high ene…
In this thesis we calculate the baryon axial current within the combined framework of the $1/N_c$ expansion and chiral perturbation theory, where $N_c$ is the number of colors. This calculation shall consider Feynman diagrams to order of one-loop, octet and decuplet intermediaries states. We obtain corrections due to one-loop and perturbative SU(3) symmetry breaking. The first corrections come from Feynman diagrams, then talk about a broken chiral symmetry in the implicit limit $m_q \rightarrow 0$, where $m_q$ is the quark mass and the second corrections are obtained by ignoring isospin breaki…
We study the D-term effect on runaway directions of the F-term scalar potential. A minimal renormalizable model is presented where supersymmetry is broken without any pseudomoduli. The model is applied to the hidden sector of gauge mediation for spontaneously breaking R symmetry and generating nonvanishing gaugino masses at the one-loop order.
The axion solution to the strong CP problem requires an anomalous global U(1) symmetry. We show that the existence of such a symmetry is a natural consequence of an extra dimension in which a gauged U(1) is spontaneously broken on one of two branes, leaving an accidental global symmetry on the other brane. Depending on where the standard model matter lives, the resulting axion can be either the DFSZ or hadronic type. Gaugino-mediated supersymmetry breaking fits comfortably in our framework. In addition, we present a model in which the supersymmetry-breaking and Peccei-Quinn breaking scales are…
We investigate the spontaneous breaking of the Baryon (B) and Lepton (L) number at the TeV scale in supersymmetric models. A simple extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model where B and L are spontaneously broken local gauge symmetries is proposed. The B and L symmetry breaking scales are defined by the supersymmetry breaking scale. By gauging B and L we understand the absence of the baryon and lepton number violating interactions of dimension four and five in the MSSM. Furthermore we show that even though these symmetries are spontaneously broken there are no dangerous operators …
Supersymmetric theories with a $U(1)_R$ symmetry have Dirac gauginos, solve the supersymmetric flavor and CP problems, and have distinctive collider signatures. However when supergravity is included, the $U(1)_R$ must be broken, adding small Majorana mass terms which split the mass of the two components of the Dirac gaugino and lead to oscillations between $U(1)_R$ charge eigenstates. We present a general study of fermion-antifermion oscillations in this system, including the effects of decays and CP violation. We consider the effects of such oscillations in the case where the two $U(1)_R$ cha…
