MiniJava is a subset of the object-oriented programming language Java. Standard ML is the canonical representative of the ML family of functional programming languages, which includes F# and OCaml. Different program analysis and verification tools and techniques have been developed for both Java-like and ML-like languages. Naturally, the tools developed for a particular language emphasise accurate treatment of language features commonly used in that language. In Java, this means objects with mutable properties and dynamic method dispatch. In ML, this means higher order functions and algebraic datatypes with pattern matching.
We propose to translate programs from one language into the other and use the target language's tools for analysis and verification. By doing so, we hope to identify areas for improvement in the target language's tools and suggest techniques, perhaps as used in the source language's tools, that may guide their improvement. More generally, we hope to develop tools for reasoning about programs that are more resilient to changes in the style of code and representation of data. We begin our programme by outlining a translation from MiniJava to ML that uses only the core features of ML; in particular, it avoids the use of ML's mutable references.
Programming Computable Functions (PCF) is a simplified programming language which provides the theoretical basis of modern functional programming languages. Answer set programming (ASP) is a programming paradigm focused on solving search problems. In this paper we provide a translation from PCF to ASP. Using this translation it becomes possible to specify search problems using PCF.
The Go programming language is an increasingly popular language but some of its features lack a formal investigation. This article explains Go's resolution mechanism for overloaded methods and its support for structural subtyping by means of translation from Featherweight Go to a simple target language. The translation employs a form of dictionary passing known from type classes in Haskell and preserves the dynamic behavior of Featherweight Go programs.
Featherweight Go (FG) is a minimal core calculus that includes essential Go features such as overloaded methods and interface types. The most straightforward semantic description of the dynamic behavior of FG programs is to resolve method calls based on run-time type information. A more efficient approach is to apply a type-directed translation scheme where interface-values are replaced by dictionaries that contain concrete method definitions. Thus, method calls can be resolved by a simple lookup of the method definition in the dictionary. Establishing that the target program obtained via the …
We present an approach for the static analysis of programs handling arrays, with a Galois connection between the semantics of the array program and semantics of purely scalar operations. The simplest way to implement it is by automatic, syntactic transformation of the array program into a scalar program followed analysis of the scalar program with any static analysis technique (abstract interpretation, acceleration, predicate abstraction,.. .). The scalars invariants thus obtained are translated back onto the original program as universally quantified array invariants. We illustrate our approa…
We study sequential programs that are instruction sequences with dynamically instantiated instructions. We define the meaning of such programs in two different ways. In either case, we give a translation by which each program with dynamically instantiated instructions is turned into a program without them that exhibits on execution the same behaviour by interaction with some service. The complexity of the translations differ considerably, whereas the services concerned are equally simple. However, the service concerned in the case of the simpler translation is far more powerful than the servic…
The sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) model for neural machine translation has significantly improved the accuracy of language translation. There have been new efforts to use this seq2seq model for program language translation or program comparisons. In this work, we present the detailed steps of using a seq2seq model to translate CUDA programs to OpenCL programs, which both have very similar programming styles. Our work shows (i) a training input set generation method, (ii) pre/post processing, and (iii) a case study using Polybench-gpu-1.0, NVIDIA SDK, and Rodinia benchmarks.
Reduction to the satisfiability problem for constrained Horn clauses (CHCs) is a widely studied approach to automated program verification. The current CHC-based methods for pointer-manipulating programs, however, are not very scalable. This paper proposes a novel translation of pointer-manipulating Rust programs into CHCs, which clears away pointers and memories by leveraging ownership. We formalize the translation for a simplified core of Rust and prove its correctness. We have implemented a prototype verifier for a subset of Rust and confirmed the effectiveness of our method.

Back-translation is widely known for its effectiveness in neural machine translation when there is little to no parallel data. In this approach, a source-to-target model is coupled with a target-to-source model trained in parallel. The target-to-source model generates noisy sources, while the source-to-target model is trained to reconstruct the targets and vice versa. Recent developments of multilingual pre-trained sequence-to-sequence models for programming languages have been very effective for a broad spectrum of downstream software engineering tasks. Hence, training them to build programmi…
Program translation is an important tool to migrate legacy code in one language into an ecosystem built in a different language. In this work, we are the first to employ deep neural networks toward tackling this problem. We observe that program translation is a modular procedure, in which a sub-tree of the source tree is translated into the corresponding target sub-tree at each step. To capture this intuition, we design a tree-to-tree neural network to translate a source tree into a target one. Meanwhile, we develop an attention mechanism for the tree-to-tree model, so that when the decoder ex…

With the advent of new and advanced programming languages, it becomes imperative to migrate legacy software to new programming languages. Unsupervised Machine Learning-based Program Translation could play an essential role in such migration, even without a sufficiently sizeable reliable corpus of parallel source code. However, these translators are far from perfect due to their statistical nature. This work investigates unsupervised program translators and where and why they fail. With in-depth error analysis of such failures, we have identified that the cases where such translators fail follo…
Large volumes of data generated by scientific experiments and simulations come in the form of arrays, while programs that analyze these data are frequently expressed in terms of array operations in an imperative, loop-based language. But, as datasets grow larger, new frameworks in distributed Big Data analytics have become essential tools to large-scale scientific computing. Scientists, who are typically comfortable with numerical analysis tools but are not familiar with the intricacies of Big Data analytics, must now learn to convert their loop-based programs to distributed data-parallel prog…
We present Aeneas, a new verification toolchain for Rust programs based on a lightweight functional translation. We leverage Rust's rich region-based type system to eliminate memory reasoning for many Rust programs, as long as they do not rely on interior mutability or unsafe code. Doing so, we relieve the proof engineer of the burden of memory-based reasoning, allowing them to instead focus on functional properties of their code. Our first contribution is a new approach to borrows and controlled aliasing. We propose a pure, functional semantics for LLBC, a Low-Level Borrow Calculus that captu…
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) provide a prominent choice of implementation platform for safety-critical industrial control systems. Formal verification provides ways of establishing correctness guarantees, which can be quite important for such safety-critical applications. But since PLC code does not include an analytic model of the system plant, their verification is limited to discrete properties. In this paper, we, thus, start the other way around with hybrid programs that include continuous plant models in addition to discrete control algorithms. Even deep correctness properties of…

A transcompiler, also known as source-to-source translator, is a system that converts source code from a high-level programming language (such as C++ or Python) to another. Transcompilers are primarily used for interoperability, and to port codebases written in an obsolete or deprecated language (e.g. COBOL, Python 2) to a modern one. They typically rely on handcrafted rewrite rules, applied to the source code abstract syntax tree. Unfortunately, the resulting translations often lack readability, fail to respect the target language conventions, and require manual modifications in order to work…

The task of translating between programming languages differs from the challenge of translating natural languages in that programming languages are designed with a far more rigid set of structural and grammatical rules. Previous work has used a tree-to-tree encoder/decoder model to take advantage of the inherent tree structure of programs during translation. Neural decoders, however, by default do not exploit known grammar rules of the target language. In this paper, we describe a tree decoder that leverages knowledge of a language's grammar rules to exclusively generate syntactically correct …
This volume contains the formal proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Rewriting Techniques for Program Transformations and Evaluation (WPTE 2018), held on 8th of Juli 2018 in Oxford, United Kingdom, and affiliated with FLoC 2018 and FSCD 2018. Scope of WPTE: Rewriting techniques are of great help for studying correctness of program transformations, translations and evaluation, and the aim of WPTE is to bring together the researchers working on program transformations, evaluation, and operationally-based programming language semantics, using rewriting methods, in order to share the t…
FlatCurry is a well-established intermediate representation of Curry programs used in compilers that translate Curry code into Prolog and Haskell code. Some FlatCurry constructs have no direct translation into imperative code. These constructs must be each handled differently when translating Curry code into C, C++ and Python code. We introduce a new representation of Curry programs, called ICurry, and derive a translation from all FlatCurry constructs into ICurry. We present the syntax of ICurry and the translation from FlatCurry to ICurry. We present a model of functional logic computations …
Can we reuse some of the huge code-base developed in C to take advantage of modern programming language features such as type safety, object-orientation, and contracts? This paper presents a source-to-source translation of C code into Eiffel, a modern object-oriented programming language, and the supporting tool C2Eif. The translation is completely automatic and supports the entire C language (ANSI, as well as many GNU C Compiler extensions, through CIL) as used in practice, including its usage of native system libraries and inlined assembly code. Our experiments show that C2Eif can handle C a…
One of the main purposes of a computer is automation. In fact, automation is the technology by which a manual task is performed with minimum or zero human assistance. Over the years, automation has proved to reduce operation cost and maintenance time in addition to increase system productivity, reliability, and performance. Today, most computerized automation are done by a computer program which is a set of instructions executed from within the computer memory by the computer central processing unit to control the computers various operations. This paper proposes a compiler program that automa…
Specifications in the Twelf system are based on a logic programming interpretation of the Edinburgh Logical Framework or LF. We consider an approach to animating such specifications using a Lambda Prolog implementation. This approach is based on a lossy translation of the dependently typed LF expressions into the simply typed lambda calculus (STLC) terms of Lambda Prolog and a subsequent encoding of lost dependency information in predicates that are defined by suitable clauses. To use this idea in an implementation of logic programming a la Twelf, it is also necessary to translate the results …
C language is one of the most popular languages for software systems. In order to verify safety, reliability and security properties of such systems written in C, a tool UMC4M for runtime verification at code level based on Modeling, Simulation and Verification Language (MSVL) and its compiler MC is employed. To do so, a C program $P$ has to be translated to an MSVL program M and the negation of a desired property $Q$ is also translated to an MSVL program M', then "M and M" is compiled and executed armed with MC. Whether $P$ violates $Q$ is checked by evaluating whether there exists an accepta…
We consider the task of mapping pseudocode to long programs that are functionally correct. Given test cases as a mechanism to validate programs, we search over the space of possible translations of the pseudocode to find a program that passes the validation. However, without proper credit assignment to localize the sources of program failures, it is difficult to guide search toward more promising programs. We propose to perform credit assignment based on signals from compilation errors, which constitute 88.7% of program failures. Concretely, we treat the translation of each pseudocode line as …

Making computer programming language more understandable and easy for the human is a longstanding problem. From assembly language to present day's object-oriented programming, concepts came to make programming easier so that a programmer can focus on the logic and the architecture rather than the code and language itself. To go a step further in this journey of removing human-computer language barrier, this paper proposes machine learning approach using Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) to convert human language into programming language code. The programmer will…
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and other parallel devices are widely available and have the potential for accelerating a wide class of algorithms. However, expert programming skills are required to achieving maximum performance. hese devices expose low-level hardware details through imperative programming interfaces where programmers explicity encode device-specific optimisation strategies. This inevitably results in non-performance-portable programs delivering suboptimal performance on other devices. Functional programming models have recently seen a renaissance in the systems community as …
A typical way of analyzing the time complexity of functional programs is to extract a recurrence expressing the running time of the program in terms of the size of its input, and then to solve the recurrence to obtain a big-O bound. For recurrence extraction to be compositional, it is also necessary to extract recurrences for the size of outputs of helper functions. Previous work has developed techniques for using logical relations to state a formal correctness theorem for a general recurrence extraction translation: a program is bounded by a recurrence when the operational cost is bounded by …
A program verifier produces reliable results only if both the logic used to justify the program's correctness is sound, and the implementation of the program verifier is itself correct. Whereas it is common to formally prove soundness of the logic, the implementation of a verifier typically remains unverified. Bugs in verifier implementations may compromise the trustworthiness of successful verification results. Since program verifiers used in practice are complex, evolving software systems, it is generally not feasible to formally verify their implementation. In this paper, we present an alte…
We are using the Agda programming language and proof assistant to formally verify the correctness of a Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus implementation based on HotStuff / LibraBFT. The Agda implementation is a translation of our Haskell implementation based on LibraBFT. This short paper focuses on one aspect of this work. We have developed a library that enables the translated Agda implementation to closely mirror the Haskell code on which it is based. This makes it easier and more efficient to review the translation for accuracy, and to maintain the translated Agda code when the Haskell cod…

Code summarization and generation empower conversion between programming language (PL) and natural language (NL), while code translation avails the migration of legacy code from one PL to another. This paper introduces PLBART, a sequence-to-sequence model capable of performing a broad spectrum of program and language understanding and generation tasks. PLBART is pre-trained on an extensive collection of Java and Python functions and associated NL text via denoising autoencoding. Experiments on code summarization in the English language, code generation, and code translation in seven programmin…
The lambda calculus, subject to typing restrictions, provides a syntax for the internal language of cartesian closed categories. This paper establishes a parallel result: staging annotations, subject to named level restrictions, provide a syntax for the internal language of Freyd categories, which are known to be in bijective correspondence with Arrows. The connection is made by interpreting multi-stage type systems as indexed functors from polynomial categories to their reindexings. This result applies only to multi-stage languages which are (1) homogeneous, (2) allow cross-stage persistence …
SCOOP is a programming model and language that allows concurrent programming at a high level of abstraction. Several approaches to verifying SCOOP programs have been proposed in the past, but none of them operate directly on the source code without modifications or annotations. We propose a fully automatic approach to verifying (a subset of) SCOOP programs by translation to graph-based models. First, we present a graph transformation based semantics for SCOOP. We present an implementation of the model in the state-of-the-art model checker GROOVE, which can be used to simulate programs and veri…
We present a formal translation of an actor-based language with cooperative scheduling to the functional language Haskell. The translation is proven correct with respect to a formal semantics of the source language and a high-level operational semantics of the target, i.e. a subset of Haskell. The main correctness theorem is expressed in terms of a simulation relation between the operational semantics of actor programs and their translation. This allows us to then prove that the resource consumption is preserved over this translation, as we establish an equivalence of the cost of the original …
Recently, the automated translation of source code from one programming language to another by using automatic approaches inspired by Neural Machine Translation (NMT) methods for natural languages has come under study. However, such approaches suffer from the same problem as previous NMT approaches on natural languages, viz. the lack of an ability to estimate and evaluate the quality of the translations; and consequently ascribe some measure of interpretability to the model's choices. In this paper, we attempt to estimate the quality of source code translations built on top of the TransCoder m…
Many applications require conformance with specifications that constrain the use of resources, such as execution time, energy, bandwidth, etc. We have presented a configurable framework for static resource usage verification where specifications can include lower and upper bound, data size-dependent resource usage functions. To statically check such specifications, our framework infers the same type of resource usage functions, which safely approximate the actual resource usage of the program, and compares them against the specification. We review how this framework supports several languages …
