A model-independent test of the cosmic curvature parameter $Ω_k$ is very important in cosmology. In order to estimate cosmic curvature from cosmological probes like standard candles, one has to be able to measure the luminosity distance $D_L(z)$, it's derivative with respect to redshift $D'_L(z)$ and independently know the expansion rate $H(z)$ at the same redshift. In this paper, we study how such an idea could be implemented with the future generation of space-based DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO), in combination with cosmic chronometers providing cosmology-independent $H(z)$ data. Our results show that for the Hubble diagram of simulated DECIGO data acting as a new type of standard siren, it would be able to constrain cosmic curvature with the precision of $ΔΩ_k= 0.09$ with the currently available sample of 31 measurements of Hubble parameters. In the framework of the third generation ground-based gravitational wave detectors, the spatial curvature is constrained to be $ΔΩ_k= 0.13$ for Einstein Telescope (ET). More interestingly, compared to other approaches aiming for model-independent estimations of spatial curvature, our analysis also achieves the reconstruction of the evolution of $Ω_k(z)$, in the framework of a model-independent method of Gaussian processes (GP) without assuming a specific form. Therefore, one can expect that the newly emerged gravitational wave astronomy can become useful in local measurements of cosmic curvature using distant sources.
Although the spatial curvature has been precisely determined via the cosmic microwave background (CMB) observation by Planck satellite, it still suffers from the well-known cosmic curvature tension. As a standard siren, gravitational waves (GWs) from binary neutron star mergers provide a direct way to measure the luminosity distance. In addition, the accelerating expansion of the universe may cause an additional phase shift in the gravitational waveform, which allows us to measure the acceleration parameter. This measurement provides an important opportunity to determine the curvature paramete…
In this paper, we aim at using the DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO), a future Japanese space gravitational-wave antenna sensitive to frequency range between LISA and ground-based detectors, to provide gravitational-wave constraints on the cosmic curvature at $z\sim 5$. In the framework of the well-known distance sum rule, the perfect redshift coverage of the standard sirens observed by DECIGO, compared with lensing observations including the source and lens from LSST, makes such cosmological-model-independent test more natural and general. Focusing on three kin…
Although the spatial curvature has been measured with very high precision, it still suffers from the well known cosmic curvature tension. In this paper, we propose an improved method to determine the cosmic curvature, by using the simulated data of binary neutron star mergers observed by the second generation space-based DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO). By applying the Hubble parameter observations of cosmic chronometers to the DECIGO standard sirens, we explore different possibilities of making measurements of the cosmic curvature referring to a distant past:…
Eccentricity of compact binaries can improve the parameter estimation of gravitational waves (GWs). In this paper, we first investigate the parameter estimation of eccentric GWs with decihertz observatory. We consider two scenarios for the configuration of DECIGO, i.e., the one cluster of DECIGO with its design sensitivity and B-DECIGO which also has one cluster but with inferior sensitivity as a comparison. We adopt the Fisher matrix to estimate the parameter errors. By mocking up the typical binaries in GWTC-3, we find a nonvanishing eccentricity can significantly improve the estimation for …
The cosmic curvature ($Ω_k$) is a fundamental parameter for cosmology. In this paper, we propose an improved model-independent method to constrain the cosmic curvature, which is geometrically related to the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ and luminosity distance $D_L(z)$. Using the currently largest $H(z)$ sample from the well-known cosmic chronometers, as well as the luminosity distance $D_L(z)$ from the relation between the UV and X-ray luminosities of 1598 quasars and the newly-compiled Pantheon sample including 1048 SNe Ia, 31 independent measurements of the cosmic curvature $Ω_k(z)$ can be expect…
Asteroid-mass primordial black holes (PBH) can explain the observed dark matter abundance while being consistent with the current indirect detection constraints. These PBH can produce gamma-ray signals from Hawking radiation that are within the sensitivity of future measurements by the AMEGO and e-ASTROGAM experiments. PBH which give rise to such observable gamma-ray signals have a cosmic origin from large primordial curvature fluctuations. There must then be a companion, stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background produced by the same curvature fluctuations. We demonstrate that the resultin…
The self coupling $λ$ of the Higgs boson in the Standard Model may show critical behavior, i.e. the Higgs potential may have a point at an energy scale $\sim 10^{17-18}$ GeV where both the first and second derivatives (almost) vanish. In this case the Higgs boson can serve as inflaton even if its nonminimal coupling to the curvature scalar is only ${\cal O}(10)$, thereby alleviating concerns about the perturbative unitarity of the theory. We find that just before the Higgs as inflaton enters the flat region of the potential the usual slow--roll conditions are violated. This leads to "overshoot…

We consider the possibility that the majority of dark matter in our Universe consists of black holes of primordial origin. We determine the conditions under which such black holes may have originated from a single-field model of inflation characterized by a quartic polynomial potential. We also explore the effect of higher-dimensional operators. The large power spectrum of curvature perturbations that is needed for a large black hole abundance sources sizable second order tensor perturbations. The resulting stochastic background of primordial gravitational waves could be detected by the future…
The nonattractor evolution in ultra-slow-roll (USR) inflation results in the amplification of superhorizon curvature perturbations and then induces a strong and detectable stochastic gravitational wave background. In this letter, we search for such a stochastic gravitational wave background in data from the third LIGO-Virgo observing run and place constraints on the USR inflationary models. The $e$-folding number of the USR phase are constrained to be $ΔN \lesssim 2.9$ at the 95% confidence level and the power spectrum of curvature perturbations amplified during the USR phase is constrained to…
Gravitational-wave astronomy offers not only new vistas into the realm of astrophysics, but it also opens an avenue for probing, for the first time, general relativity in its strong-field, nonlinear, and dynamical regime, where the theory's predictions manifest themselves in their full glory. We present a study of whether the gravitational wave events detected so far by the LIGO-Virgo scientific collaborations can be used to probe higher-curvature corrections to general relativity. In particular, we focus on two examples: Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet and dynamical Chern-Simons gravity. We fin…
We propose an analytical parametrization of the comoving distance and Hubble parameter to study the cosmic expansion history beyond the vanilla $Λ$CDM model. The parametrization is generalized enough to include the contribution of spatial curvature and to capture the higher redshift behaviors. With this parameterization, we study the late time cosmic behavior and put constraints on the cosmological parameters like present values of Hubble parameter ($H_{0}$), matter energy density parameter ($Ω_{m0}$), spatial curvature energy density parameter ($Ω_{k0}$) and baryonic matter energy density par…
The current experimentally measured parameters of the Standard Model (SM) suggest that our Universe lies in a metastable electroweak vacuum, where the Higgs field is prone to vacuum decay to a lower state with catastrophic consequences. Our measurements dictate that such an event has not taken place yet, despite the many different mechanisms that could have triggered it in our past light-cone. The focus of our work has been to calculate the probability of the false vacuum to decay during the period of inflation and use it to constrain the last unknown renormalisable SM parameter $ξ$, which cou…
In the model where Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) form from large primordial curvature (C) perturbations, i.e., CPBHs, constraints on PBH abundance provide in principle constraints on the primordial curvature power spectrum. This connection however depends necessarily on the details of PBH formation mechanism. In this paper we provide, for the first time, constraints on the primordial curvature power spectrum from the latest limits on PBH abundance, taking into account all the steps from gravitational collapse in real space to PBH formation. In particular, we use results from numerical relativi…
We study twin Higgs models at non-zero temperature and discuss cosmological phase transitions as well as their implications on electroweak baryogenesis and gravitational waves. It is shown that the expectation value of the Higgs field at the critical temperature of the electroweak phase transition is much smaller than the critical temperature, which indicates two important facts: (i) the electroweak phase transition cannot be analyzed perturbatively (ii) the electroweak baryogenesis is hardly realized in the typical realizations of twin Higgs models. We also analyze the phase transition associ…
We estimate the maximum allowed amplitude for the power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbations, ${\cal P_R}(k)$, on all scales from the absence of any detection signals of sub-solar mass black holes. In particular we analyze the constraints on the PBHs and we focus on the low mass limit where the Hawking radiation is expected to significantly influence the big bang observables, considering also different early cosmic histories. We derive the upper bounds for the variance of density perturbations, $σ(M)$, for any possible reheating temperature as well as for the cosmological scenari…
