We present an overview of the phenomenological implications of the theory of resummed quantum gravity. We discuss its prediction for the cosmological constant in the context of the Planck scale cosmology of Bonanno and Reuter, its relationship to Weinberg's asymptotic safety idea, and its relationship to Weinberg's soft graviton resummation theorem. We also discuss constraints and consistency checks of the theory.
Supersymmetric theories in 5d orbifold can have Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms on the boundaries. These terms induce a 5d mass for the bulk matter fields. We analyze this effect using N=1 superfields and show how it can be understood as a mixing between the U(1) gauge boson and the graviphoton. We also study the implications of the FI-terms in the mass spectrum of theories with Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking. We present a new 5d supersymmetric model that has the massless spectrum of the Standard Model and predicts a Higgs boson with a mass around the present experimental limit.
We study moduli-dominated SUSY breaking within the framework of string models. This type of SUSY breaking in general leads to non-universal soft masses, i.e. soft scalar masses and gaugino masses. Further gauginos are lighter than sfermions. This non-universality has phenomenologically important implications. We investigate radiative electroweak symmetry breaking in the mass spectrum derived from moduli-dominated SUSY breaking, where the lightest chargino and neutralino are almost gauginos. Moreover, constraints from the branching ratio of $b \to s γ$ and the relic abundance of the LSP are als…
In this paper we show how some flavor symmetries may be derived from the heterotic string, when compactified on a 6D orbifold. In the body of the paper we focus on the $D_4$ family symmetry, recently obtained in $Z_3 \times Z_2$ orbifold constructions. We show how this flavor symmetry constrains fermion masses, as well as the soft SUSY breaking mass terms. Flavor symmetry breaking can generate the hierarchy of fermion masses and at the same time the flavor symmetry suppresses large flavor changing neutral current processes.
Superstring phenomenology aims at achieving two goals. The first is to reproduce the observed physics of the Standard Model. The second is to identify experimental signatures of superstring unification which, if observed, will provide further evidence for the validity of superstring theory. I discuss such potential signatures of superstring unification. I propose that proton lifetime constraints imply that the Standard Model gauge group must be obtained directly at the string level. In this case the unifying gauge group, for example $SO(10)$, is broken to the Standard Model gauge group by ``Wi…
I briefly review the theory of Holographic Space-time and its relation to the cosmological constant problem, and the breaking of supersymmetry (SUSY). When combined with some simple phenomenological requirements, these ideas lead to a fairly unique model for Tera-scale physics, which implies direct gauge mediation of SUSY breaking and a model for dark matter as a hidden sector baryon, with nonzero magnetic dipole moment.
It is proposed that $S$-duality is a fundamental symmetry of nature which is spontaneously broken. Axion and dilaton are identified with the doublet of the $S$-duality symmetry group $SL(2,\mathbbm{R})$. The symmetry is broken at a high scale corresponding to the experimentally estimated axion decay constant $f_χ$. The symmetry breaking mechanism is discussed in analogy with PCAC in pion physics. $S$-duality invariant interactions of fermions with axion and dilaton doublet are introduced. The symmetry breaking mechanism contributes negligibly small corrections to fermion masses in the QCD sect…
We apply the Festina Lente (FL) bound on a hidden sector with $U(1)$ gauge symmetries. Since the FL bound puts a lower bound on masses of particles charged under the $U(1)$ gauge symmetries, it is possible to constrain the hidden sector even with a tiny coupling to the Standard Model. In particular, we focus on the phenomenological implications of the FL bound on milli-charged particles, which naturally arise when kinetic mixing between the photon and the hidden photon is allowed. It turns out that the milli-charged particle with the mass $M\lesssim 5$ meV is prohibited by the FL bound in the …
In this talk I summarize several recent results concerning the four-dimensional effective supergravity obtained using a Calabi-Yau compactification of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string from M-theory. A simple macroscopic study is provided expanding the theory in powers of two dimensionless variables. Higher order terms in the Kähler potential are identified and matched with the heterotic string corrections. In the context of this M-theory expansion, I discuss several phenomenological issues: universality of soft scalar masses, relations between the different scales of the theory (eleven-dim…
The type-III seesaw seems to explain the very minuteness of neutrino masses readily and naturally. The high-energy see-saw theories usually involve a larger number of effective parametres than the physical and measurable parametres appearing in the low-energy neutrino phenomenology. Casas-Ibarra parametrisation facilitates to encode the information lost in integrating the heavy fermions out in an arbitrary complex orthogonal matrix. The CMS collaboration has already searched for triplet fermions in the type-III seesaw model with only one generation of triplet fermion flavour democratically dec…
We investigate low energy implications of string loop corrections to supergravity couplings which break a possible flavor universality of the tree level. If Supersymmetry is broken by the dilaton $F$-term, universal soft scalar masses arise at the leading order but string loop corrections generically induce flavor-non-diagonal soft terms. Constraints from flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) and CP violation then require a large supersymmtery breaking scale and thus heavy gluinos and squarks. If Supersymmetry is broken by moduli $F$-terms, universality at the string tree level can only be g…
This paper discusses possible phenomenological implications for p+A and A+A collisions of the results of recent numerical AdS/CFT calculations examining asymmetric collisions of planar shocks. In view of the extreme Lorentz contraction, we model highly relativistic heavy ion collisions (HICs) as a superposition of collisions between many near-independent transverse "pixels" with differing incident longitudinal momenta. It was found that also for asymmetric collisions the hydrodynamization time is in good approximation a proper time, just like for symmetric collisions, depending on the geometri…
We investigate the phenomenology of an orbifold string model in which supersymmetry breaking is dominated by the overall `size' modulus field and all matter fields are in the untwisted sector. The possibly close degeneracy of the lightest neutralino and chargino and the possibly small splitting between the gluino and chargino/LSP mass imply that discovery of supersymmetry at future colliders could be more challenging than anticipated. Specialized search strategies and particular detector features could play an important role. For preferred model parameter choices, the phenomenology of dark mat…
We investigate the low energy properties of string vacua with spontaneously broken $N=1$ supersymmetry by a dilaton $F$-term. As a consequence of the universal couplings of the dilaton, the supersymmetric mass spectrum is determined in terms of only three independent parameters and more constrained than in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. For a $μ$-term induced by the \K\ potential the parameter space becomes two-dimensional; in the allowed regions of this parameter space we find that most supersymmetric particles are determined solely by the gluino mass. The Higgs is rather light an…
Various theories of Quantum Gravity argue that near the Planck scale, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle should be replaced by the so called Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). We show that the GUP gives rise to two additional terms in any quantum mechanical Hamiltonian, proportional to βp^4 and β^2 p^6 respectively, where β\sim 1/(M_{Pl}c)^2 is the GUP parameter. These terms become important at or above the Planck energy. Considering only the first of these, and treating it as a perturbation, we show that the GUP affects the Lamb shift, Landau levels, reflection and transmission coeffi…
Using Dimensional Regularization (DR) for some two-point functions of a prototype Non-Comutative (NC) ϕ^4 scalar theory in 4-dimensions, we explictly analyze, to one-loop, the IR and UV divergences of non-planar diagrams having quadratic divergences and compare to the case of the Pauli-Villars cut-off regularization (PVR). We also note that the IR structure 1/p0p obtained from DR is reproduced by PVR in the limit where the UV cut-off Λis set to infinity. We study the phenomenological implications of this result by rederiving bounds from low-energy data on the violation of Lorentz invariance ba…
At a fundamental level the notion of particle (quantum) comes from quantum field theory. From this point of view we estimate corrections to the free particle wave function due to minimum-length deformed quantum mechanics to the first order in the deformation parameter. Namely, in the matrix element $<0 |\varPhi(t,\,\mathbf{x}) |\mathbf{p} >$ that in the standard case sets the free particle wave function $\propto \exp(i[\mathbf{p}\mathbf{x} - ε(\mathbf{p}) t])$ there appear three kinds of corrections when the field operator is calculated by using the minimum-length deformed quantum mechanics. S…
Quantum gravity places important consistency conditions on low-energy effective field theory, such as the absence of global symmetries. These may have important consequences in the search for particle physics beyond the Standard Model. We review some of these conditions and their phenomenological implications for the strong CP problem, the weak scale, new gauge interactions, and cosmology. We also offer some general comments on how these ideas can guide model building.
We consider a class of models with gauged U(1)_R symmetry in 4D N=1 supergravity that have, at the classical level, a metastable ground state, an infinitesimally small (tunable) positive cosmological constant and a TeV gravitino mass. We analyse if these properties are maintained under the addition of visible sector (MSSM-like) and hidden sector state(s), where the latter may be needed for quantum consistency. We then discuss the anomaly cancellation conditions in supergravity as derived by Freedman, Elvang and Körs and apply their results to the special case of a U(1)_R symmetry, in the prese…
We study the effective stress-energy tensor induced by cosmological inhomogeneity in $f(R)=R+cR^2$ and equivalent scalar-tensor theories, motivated both by models of early universe inflation and by phenomenological alternative cosmologies to the standard $Λ$-CDM. We use Green and Wald's framework for averaging over classical fluctuations of short-wavelength $λ$. By ensuring that the leading non-linear terms from the fluctuations of the Einstein terms and the corrections both contribute in the formal limit as $λ\to0$, we derive a diffeomorphism invariant effective stress-energy tensor whose tra…
The cosmological term, $Λ$, in Einstein's equations is an essential ingredient of the `concordance' $Λ$CDM model of cosmology. In this mini-review presentation, we assess the possibility that $Λ$ can be a dynamical quantity, more specifically a `running quantity' in quantum field theory in curved spacetime. A great deal of phenomenological works have shown in the last few years that this option (sometimes accompanied with a running gravitational coupling) may cure some of the tensions afflicting the $Λ$CDM. The `running vacuum models' (RVM's) are characterized by the vacuum energy density, $ρ_…
In this paper, we first provide a brief review of the effective dynamics of two recently well-studied models of modified loop quantum cosmologies (mLQCs), which arise from different regularizations of the Hamiltonian constraint and show the robustness of a generic resolution of the big bang singularity, replaced by a quantum bounce due to non-perturbative Planck scale effects. As in loop quantum cosmology (LQC), in these modified models the slow-roll inflation happens generically. We consider the cosmological perturbations following the dressed and hybrid approaches and clarify some subtle iss…

We study the phenomenological implications of the classical limit of the "stringy" commutation relations [x_i,p_j]=i hbar[(1+beta p^2) delta_{ij} + beta' p_i p_j]. In particular, we investigate the "deformation" of Kepler's third law and apply our result to the rotation curves of gas and stars in spiral galaxies.
