We investigate the gravitational waves (GWs) produced from the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) phase transition associated with the clockwork axion. The PQ phase transition can be first-order when the dimension-6 operator is included into the scalar potential. The GWs from the PQ phase transition at scale in the range of $10^3-10^6$ GeV are detectable for the BBO and ALIA interferometers. The LISA and Taiji interferometers can probe the GWs from the PQ scale $f\lesssim 10^4$ GeV, while the GW signals from the scale $f\gtrsim 10^5$ GeV can be detected by the ground-based GW observatories ET and CE. We find that the parameter space $κ_m\sim 0.06-0.001$, $κ_l\sim 0.04-0.001$, and $\varepsilon\sim 0.1-0.01$ at the scale $f=10^5$ GeV and most of the parameter regions at the scale $f=10^6$ GeV have been excluded by the LIGO O2 run. The LIGO O3 and design phases can further probe the remaining parameter space. We show that the GWs from the annihilation of domain walls with a PQ scale $f\simeq 2\times 10^5$ GeV can induce the stochastic signals indicated by the 12.5-year observation of NANOGrav. The LIGO O3 run has the opportunity of detecting the GW signals from the first-order PQ phase transition around this scale.
The clockwork mechanism is a novel method for generating a large separation between the dynamical scale and interaction scale of a theory. We demonstrate how the mechanism can arise from a sequence of strongly-coupled sectors. This framework avoids elementary scalar fields as well as ad hoc continuous global symmetries, both of which are subject to serious stability issues. The clockwork factor, $q$, is determined by the consistency of the strong dynamics. The preserved global $U(1)$ of the clockwork appears as an accidental symmetry, resulting from discrete or $U(1)$ gauge symmetries, and it …
A previously discussed clockwork mechanism within heterotic M-theory is applied to its axion landscape. We identify a unique candidate for a QCD-axion with a decay constant in the preferred "axion window" around $10^{11}\,$GeV. It is accompanied by at least one ultra-light axion that couples predominantly to hidden sector gauge groups.
Implications of supersymmetrizing the clockwork axions are studied. Supersymmetry ensures that the saxions and axinos have the same pattern of the coupling hierarchy as the clockwork axions. If we assume supersymmetry breaking is universal over the clockwork sites, the coupling structure is preserved, while the mass orderings of the saxions and axinos can differ depending on the supersymmetry breaking scale. While the massive saxions and axions quickly decay, the lightest axino can be stable and thus a dark matter candidate. The relic abundance of the axino dark matter from thermal production …
The clockwork axion refers to a family of aligned multi-axion models that lead to an exponential hierarchy between the scale of Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking and the scale of the axion decay constant. The clockworking can bring the Peccei-Quinn-scale particles to within reach of collider experiments. In this work we are interested in whether cosmological observations impose any new constraints on the clockwork axion. If the universe reheats above the scale of Peccei-Quinn breaking, then the ensuing cosmological phase transition produces a network of topological defects, which have a qualitativ…
Many cosmological models rely on large couplings of axions to gauge fields. Examples include theories of magnetogenesis, inflation on a steep potential, chiral gravitational waves, and chromonatural inflation. Such theories require a mismatch between the axion field range and the mass scale appearing in the $a F \widetilde{F}$ coupling. This mismatch suggests an underlying monodromy, with the axion winding around its fundamental period a large number of times. We investigate the extent to which this integer can be explained as a product of smaller integers in a UV completion: in the parlance o…

We present a renormalizable theory of scalars in which the low energy effective theory contains a pseudo-Goldstone Boson with a compact field space of 2π F and an approximate discrete shift symmetry Z_Q with Q>>1, yet the number of fields in the theory goes as log(Q). Such a model can serve as a UV completion to models of relaxions and is a new source of exponential scale separation in field theory. While the model is local in `theory space', it appears to not have a continuum generalization (i.e., it cannot be a deconstructed extra dimension). Our framework shows that super-Planckian field ex…
The QCD axion's coupling to photons is often assumed to lie in a narrow band as a function of the axion mass. We demonstrate that several simple mechanisms, in addition to the photophilic clockwork axion already in the literature, can significantly extend the allowed range of couplings. Some mechanisms we present generalize the KNP alignment scenario, widely studied as a model of inflation, to the phenomenology of a QCD axion. In particular we present KSVZ-like realizations of two-axion KNP alignment and of the clockwork mechanism. Such a "confinement tower" realization of clockwork may prove …
Compactifications of heterotic M-theory are shown to provide solutions to the weak- and axion-scale hierarchy problems as a consequence of warped large extra dimensions. They allow a description that is reminiscent of the so-called continuous clockwork mechanism. The models constructed here cover a new region of clockwork parameter space and exhibit unexplored spectra and couplings of Kaluza-Klein modes. Previously discussed models are outside this region of parameter space and do seem to require an ultraviolet completion other than that of perturbative higher dimensional $D=10,11$ string- or …
The continuum clockwork is an extra-dimensional set-up to realize certain features of the clockwork mechanism generating exponentially suppressed or hierarchical couplings of light particles. We study the continuum clockwork in a general scheme in which large volume, warped geometry, and localization of zero modes in extra dimension are described by independent parameters. For this, we propose a generalized 5-dimensional linear dilaton model which can realize such set-up as a solution of the model, and examine the KK spectrum and the couplings of zero modes and massive KK modes to boundary-loc…
We study QCD axion or cosmological axion-like particles (ALPs) in a model inspired by the recent interest in 4-dimensional clockwork models, with the global symmetry being accidentally enforced by a gauge abelian quiver with scalar bifundamental fields. For the QCD axion, we analyze the connection between the degree of protection of the axion mass against gravitational corrections, the explanation of the hierarchy $f_a \ll M_P$ and the number of colored fermions needed to generate anomalous couplings to gluons, all linked together by the underlying gauge symmetries. Based on that model and on …
We propose a framework in which the QCD axion has an exponentially large coupling to photons, relying on the "clockwork" mechanism. We discuss the impact of present and future axion experiments on the parameter space of the model. In addition to the axion, the model predicts a large number of pseudo-scalars which can be light and observable at the LHC. In the most favorable scenario, axion Dark Matter will give a signal in multiple axion detection experiments and the pseudo-scalars will be discovered at the LHC, allowing to determine most of the parameters of the model.
Astrophysical sources of energetic gamma rays provide the right conditions for maximal mixing between (pseudo)scalar (axion-like) particles and photons if their coupling is as strong as suggested by the PVLAS claim. This is independent of whether or not the axion interaction is standard at all energies or becomes supressed in the extreme conditions of the stellar interior. The flux of such particles through the Earth could be observed using a metre long, Tesla strength superconducting solenoid thus testing the axion interpretation of the PVLAS anomaly. The rate of events in CAST caused by axio…
The photon splitting gamma -> gamma gamma in a time-independent and inhomogeneous magnetized background is considered when neutral and ultralight spin-0 particles are coupled to two-photons. Depending on the inhomogeneity scale of the external field, resonant photon splitting can occur. If an optical laser crosses a magnetic field of few Tesla with typical inhomogeneity scale of the order of the meter, a potentially observable rate of photon splittings is expected for the PVLAS range of couplings and masses.
We suggest that experiments based on Josephson junctions, SQUIDS, and coupled Josephson qubits can be used to construct a resonant environment for dark matter axions. We propose experimental setups in which axionic interaction strengths in a Josephson junction environment can be tested, similar in nature to recent experiments that test for quantum entanglement of two coupled Josephson qubits. We point out that the parameter values relevant for early-universe axion cosmology are accessible with present day's achievements in nanotechnology. We work out how typical dark matter and dark energy sig…
We explore the phenomenological consequences of a model with axion-like particles and hidden photons mixing with photons. In this model, the hidden photon is directly coupled to the photon, while the axion coupling is induced by an external electromagnetic field. We consider vacuum effects on a polarised photon beam, like changes in the ellipticity and rotation angles.

The recently measured 3.5 keV line in a number of galaxy clusters, the Andromeda galaxy (M31) and the Milky Way (MW) center can be well accounted for by a scenario in which dark matter decays to axion-like particles (ALPs) and subsequently convert to 3.5 keV photons in magnetic fields of galaxy clusters or galaxies. We propose to test this hypothesis by performing X-ray polarization measurements. Since ALPs can only couple to photons with polarization orientation parallel to magnetic field, we can confirm or reject this model by measuring the polarization of 3.5 keV line and comparing it to th…
Ultra-light bosons such as axions or axion-like particles (ALPs), are promising candidates to solve the dark matter problem. A unique way to detect such ALPs is to search for the periodic oscillation feature of the position angles of linearly polarized photons emitted from the regions where ALP dark matter forms a solitonic core. In this work, we use the high-resolution polarimetric measurements of the radiation near the super-massive black hole (SMBH) in the center of the Milky Way, i.e., Sagittarius A$^\star$ (Sgr A$^\star$), by a sub-array of the Event Horizon Telescope to search for the ul…
The dark photon is a massive hypothetical particle that interacts with the Standard Model by kinetically mixing with the visible photon. For small values of the mixing parameter, dark photons can evade cosmological bounds to be a viable dark matter candidate. Due to the similarities with the electromagnetic signals generated by axions, several bounds on dark photon signals are simply reinterpretations of historical bounds set by axion haloscopes. However, the dark photon has a property that the axion does not: an intrinsic polarisation. Due to the rotation of the Earth, accurately accounting f…
The causal tail of stochastic gravitational waves can be used to probe the energy density in free streaming relativistic species as well as measure $g_\star(T)$ and beta functions $β(T)$ as a function of temperature. In the event of the discovery of loud stochastic gravitational waves, we demonstrate that LISA can measure the free streaming fraction of the universe down to the the $10^{-3}$ level, 100 times more sensitive than current constraints. Additionally, it would be sensitive to $\mathcal{O}(1)$ deviations of $g_\star$ and the QCD $β$ function from their Standard Model value at temperat…
