The dependence of the production of the $X(3872)$ meson on the hadron multiplicity in $pp$ collisions has been used as evidence against $X$ being a charm-meson molecule. The argument is based in part on the incorrect assumption that the cross section for the breakup of $X$ by scattering with comovers can be approximated by a geometric cross section inversely proportional to the binding energy of $X$. The breakup cross section should instead be approximated by the probability-weighted sum of the cross sections for the scattering of comoving pions from the charm-meson constituents of $X$, which is insensitive to the binding energy. A simple modification of the comover interaction model gives excellent fits to the data from the LHCb collaboration on the multiplicity dependence of the production of $X$ and $ψ(2S)$ using parameters compatible with $X$ being a loosely bound charm-meson molecule.
At LHC energies, the charged-particle multiplicity dependence of particle production is a topic of considerable interest in $pp$ collisions. It has been argued that multiple partonic interactions play an important role in particle production mechanisms, not only affecting the soft processes but also the hard processes. Recently, ALICE has measured $J/ψ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity to study the correlation between soft and hard processes. In this contribution, we present the $J/ψ$ production versus multiplicity for $pp$ and $p-Pb$ collisions measured by ALICE. We c…
In this paper we demonstrate that the vigorously growing multiplicity distributions measured by STAR and ALICE present a strong evidence in favor of multigluon fusion mechanisms of the quarkonia production in CGC approach. We analyze the contribution of 3-gluon fusion mechanism and demonstrate that it gives a sizeable contribution to quarkonia yields, as well as predicts correctly the multiplicity distributions for $J/ψ$ at RHIC and LHC. We also make predictions for other quarkonia states, such as $ψ(2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$, and find that the multiplicity dependence of these states should be comparab…
The production of the $K_S^0$ meson in high multiplicity $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV is investigated considering the hybrid formalism and the solution of the running coupling Balitsky - Kovchegov equation. The associated cross section is estimated and compared with the experimental data for the transverse momentum spectrum. Moreover, we analyze the self-normalized yields of $K_S^0$ mesons as a function of the multiplicity of coproduced charged hadrons and demonstrate that a steep increasing is theoretically predicted. A comparison with the ALICE data is presented considering two dis…
In inelastic $p+p$ collisions, the interacting objects are quarks and gluons (partons). It is believed that there are multiple interactions between the partons in a single $p+p$ event. Recent studies of multiplicity dependence of particle production in $p+p$ collisions have gathered considerable interest in the scientific community. According to several theoretical calculations, multiple gluon participation in hadronic collisions is the cause of high-multiplicity events. If the interaction is hard enough (large $p_{\rm T}$ transfer), the semi-hard processes of multiple interactions of partons …
Quarkonium production as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity could provide an insight into particle production processes at the partonic level in hadronic collisions. It is believed that multiple partonic interactions play an important role in particle production and affect both soft and hard processes. The study of correlations between quarkonia and charged-particle multiplicity may provide information about this. In this contribution, ALICE measurements of J$/ψ$ and $Υ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity are presented for pp collisions at center-of-mass ene…
In this paper we propose an approach which demonstrates the dependence of quarkoni production on the multiplicity of the accompanying hadrons. Our approach is based on the three gluons fusion mechanism, without assuming the multiplicity dependence of the saturation scale. We show, that we describe the experimental data, which has a dependence that is much steeper than the multiplicity of the hadrons.
The origin of the erraticity behaviour observed recently in the experiment is studied in some detail. The negative-binomial distribution is used to fit the experimental multiplicity distribution. It is shown that, with the multiplicity distribution taken into account, the experimentally observed erraticity behaviour can be well reproduced using a flat probability distribution. The dependence of erraticity behaviour on the width of multiplicity distribution is studied.
Prevalent models of multi-particle production in relativistic pp collisions at pre-LHC energies, fail to provide convincing explanations to certain significant features of the final-state charged particles in high-multiplicity pp events at the LHC. This article presents a study, contrasting those features, usually interpreted as collective behaviour of particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, in the framework of hydrodynamic EPOS3 model, emphasizing quantitative comparison between the data and the model-based simulation in the same kinematic ranges, for better cognizance of th…
The ALICE collaboration reports the measurement of the inclusive J/psi yield as a function of charged particle pseudorapidity density dN_{ch}/deta in pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV at the LHC. J/psi particles are detected for p_t > 0, in the rapidity interval |y| < 0.9 via decay into e+e-, and in the interval 2.5 < y < 4.0 via decay into mu+mu- pairs. An approximately linear increase of the J/psi yields normalized to their event average (dN_{J/psi}/dy)/<dN_{J/psi}/dy> with (dN_{ch}/deta)/<dN_{ch}/deta> is observed in both rapidity ranges, where dN_{ch}/deta is measured within |eta| < 1 and p…
We analyze the structure of the high multiplicity events observed by the CMS collaboration at the LHC. We argue that the bulk of the observed correlations is due to the production of a pair of jets with p_t > 15 GeV/c. We also suggest that high multiplicity events are due to a combination of three effects: high underlying multiplicity for collisions at small impact parameters, upward fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding protons, and production of hadrons in the fragmentation of dijets. The data analysis is suggested which may clarify the underlying dynamics of the high multiplici…
High-multiplicity pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies have created special importance in view of the Underlying Event (UE) observables. The recent results of LHC, such as long range angular correlation, flow-like patterns, strangeness enhancement etc. in high multiplicity events are not yet completely understood. In the same direction, the understanding of multiplicity dependence of J/$ψ$ production is highly necessary. Transverse spherocity, which is an event shape variable, helps to investigate the particle production by isolating the hard and the soft components. In th…
We discuss the production of $D$-mesons and $J/ψ$ in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions within the Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. We demonstrate that the modification of the LHC data on $D$ and $J/ψ$ yields in high multiplicity events relative to minimum bias events arise from a significant enhancement of the gluon saturation scales of the corresponding rare parton configurations in the colliding protons and nuclei. For a given event multiplicity, we predict these relative yields to be energy independent from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC to the highest LHC ene…
We present the dependence of $D$ production on the charged particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies. We show that, in a framework of source coherence, the open charm production exhibits a growth with the multiplicity which is stronger than linear in the high density domain. This departure from linearity was previously observed in the $J/ψ$ inclusive data from proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV and was successfully described in our approach. Our assumption, the existence of coherence effects present in proton-proton collisions at high energy, applies for high multiplicit…
Predictions of a thermodynamical model of hadron production for multiplicity distributions in $e^+e^-$ annihilations at LEP and PEP-PETRA centre of mass energies are shown. The production process is described as a two-step process in which primary hadrons emitted from the thermal source decay into final observable particles. The final charged tracks multiplicity distributions turn out to be of Negative Binomial type and are in quite good agreement with experimental observations. The average number of clans calculated from fitted Negative Binomial coincides with the average number of primary ha…
Small system collectivity observed at the LHC energies along with enhancement of strangeness makes high-multiplicity proton+proton (pp) collisions very interesting in order to look for QGP-like features, usually found in heavy-ion collisions. It may be interesting to perform a double differential study of different observables in pp collisions in terms of charged particle multiplicity and event shape in order to understand the new dimensions in high-multiplicity pp physics. We study the correlation between the number of multi-partonic interactions (nMPI), event shape (transverse spherocity) an…
We discuss the dependence of J/ψ production on the charged particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies. We show that, in the framework of parton saturation or string interaction models, the hard J/ψ production exhibits a significant growth with the multiplicity, which is stronger than linear in the high density domain. This departure from linearity, that should affect any hard observable, applies for high multiplicity proton-proton collisions in the central rapidity region and is a consequence of the parton saturation or the strong interaction among colour ropes that take…
In this paper we analyze in detail the production of the $χ_{c}$ and $χ_{b}$ mesons in $pp$ collisions. Using the color dipole framework, we estimated the cross-sections in the kinematics of ongoing and forthcoming experiments, and found that our estimates are in reasonable agreement with currently available experimental data. We also analyzed the dependence on multiplicity of co-produced hadrons and found that it is significantly milder than that of $S$-wave quarkonia. We expect that the experimental confirmation of this result could constitute an important test of our understanding of multip…
In this paper we discuss the inclusive $J/ψ$ production in proton-proton collisions from fusion of three pomerons. We demonstrate that this mechanism gets dominant contribution from the region which can be theoretically described by CGC/Saturation approach. Numerically, it gives a substantial contribution to the $J/ψ$ production, and is able to describe the experimentally observable shapes of the rapidity, momenta and multiplicity distributions. The latter fact provides a natural explanation of the experimentally observed enhancement of multiplicity distribution in $J/ψ$ production.
Recent experimental studies of the multiplicity dependence of heavy quark (HQ) production in proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV showed a strong non-linear increase of the HQ multiplicity as a function of the charged particle multiplicity. We try to understand this behavior using the EPOS3 approach. Two issues play an important role: multiple scattering, in particular its impact on multiplicity fluctuations, and the collective hydrodynamic expansion. The results are very robust with respect to many details of the modeling, which means that these data contain valuable information about very basic…
In this paper we analyze in detail the production of strangeness in proton-proton collisions in the kinematics of large transverse momenta $p_{T}$ of produced hadrons. Using the color dipole framework, we estimated the production cross-sections for kaons, and demonstrated that the shapes of the $p_{T}$-dependence are in agreement with available experimental data. We also analyzed the self-normalized yields of strange hadrons as a function of multiplicity of co-produced hadrons, and found that the predictions are in agreement with the faster-than-linear growth seen in experimental data. Our des…
We study the production of $J/ψ$ vector mesons as a function of charged hadron multiplicity in p+p and p+Pb collisions at LHC energies. We employ the color glass condensate framework, using running coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov evolved dipole amplitudes, to compute gluon and $c\bar{c}$-pair production. We use fragmentation functions to obtain charged hadrons, and explore two different hadronization schemes for the $J/ψ$: non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics and the improved color evaporation model. In our framework, event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations of both hadrons and $J/ψ$ are driven…
Using the nucleon coalescence model based on kinetic freeze-out nucleons from the 3D MUSIC+UrQMD and the 2D VISHNU hybrid model with a crossover equation of state, we study the multiplicity dependence of deuteron ($d$) and triton ($t$) production from central to peripheral Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=$ 7.7, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV and Pb+Pb at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.76$ TeV, respectively. It is found that the ratio $N_t N_p/N_d^2$ of the proton yield $N_p$, deuteron yield $N_d$ and triton yield $N_t$ exhibits a scaling behavior in its multiplicity dependence, i.e., …
The multiplicity dependence of heavy flavour production in pp-collisions at LHC energies is studied in the framework of the multi-pomeron exchange model. The model is introducing the string-string interaction collectivity effects in pp collisions, which modifies multiplicity and transverse momenta, leading to the non-trivial mean pt vs. multiplicity (<pt>_Nch - Nch) correlation. The string collectivity strength parameter is fixed by experimental data on multiplicity and transverse momentum correlation in a wide energy range (from ISR to LHC). The particles discrimination is implemented accordi…
The production mechanism of quarkonia states in hadronic collisions is still to be understood by the scientific community. In high-multiplicity $p+p$ collisions, Underlying Event (UE) observables are of major interest. The Multi-Parton Interactions (MPI) is a UE observable, where several interactions occur at the partonic level in a single $p+p$ event. This leads to dependence of particle production on event multiplicity. If the MPI occurs in a harder scale, there will be a correlation between the yield of quarkonia and total charged particle multiplicity. The ALICE experiment at the Large Had…
We propose a further development of a multi-pomeron exchange model of pp and p$\bar p$ collisions at high energy. The model describes consistently multiplicity, transverse momentum of charged particles and their correlation in wide energy range (from ISR to LHC) by introducing string collectivity effects in pp collisions. The particles species differentiation is implemented according to Schwinger mechanism. Due to the influence of higher resonances on the yields of observed particles, we implement the production of a large set of hadron resonances with cascade decays. We present the results on…
We report the multiplicity dependence of charged particle productions for $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, $\overline{p}$ and $ϕ$ meson at $|y| < 1.0$ in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{\rm s}$ = 200 GeV with $\rm PYTHIA$ simulation. The impact of parton multiple interactions and gluon contributions is studied and found to be possible sources of the particle yields splitting as a function of $p_T$ with respect to multiplicity. No obvious particle species dependence for the splitting is observed. The multiplicity dependence on ratios of $K^-/π^-$, $K^+/π^+$, $\overline{p}/π^-$, $p/π^+$ and $Λ/K^{0}_{s}$ in …
Heavy flavor measurements in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at collider energies enable unique insights into their production and hadronization mechanism because experimental and theoretical uncertainties cancel in ratios of their cross-sections relative to minimum bias events. We explore such event engineering using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory to compute short distance charmonium cross-sections. The CGC is combined with heavy-quark fragmentation functions to compute $D$-meson cross-sections; for the $J/ψ$, hadronization is described e…

At the LHC energies, the underlying observables are of major topic of interest in high multiplicity $p+p$ collisions. Multiple Parton Interactions (MPI) is one of them, in which several interactions occur in a single $p+p$ collision. It is believed that MPI is the main reason behind the high multiplicity in $p+p$ collisions at the LHC. It was believed that MPI has only effect to the soft particle production, but recent ALICE result reveals that it can also affect the hard-particle production. In such case, the self normalized yield of heavy particle like $\rm J/ψ$ shows an increasing trend wit…
We review the charged particle and photon multiplicity, and transverse energy production in heavy-ion collisions starting from few GeV to TeV energies. The experimental results of pseudorapidity distribution of charged particles and photons at different collision energies and centralities are discussed. We also discuss the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation and expansion dynamics using the Landau hydrodynamics and the underlying physics. Meanwhile, we present the estimation of initial energy density multiplied with formation time as a function of different collision energies and centralities…
The evaluation of the number of ways we can distribute energy among a collection of particles in a system is important in many branches of modern science. In particular, in multiparticle production processes the measurements of particle yields and kinematic distributions are essential for characterizing their global properties and to develop an understanding of the mechanism for particle production. We demonstrate that energy distributions are connected with multiplicity distributions by their generating functions.
We present an analysis of data on light flavour hadron production as function of event multiplicity at LHC energies measured by the ALICE collaboration. The strangeness-canonical approach within the framework of the THERMUS statistical hadronisation model is used for a simultaneous description of pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions. The rapidity window dependence of the strangeness correlation volume is addressed and a value of $Δy = 1.33 \pm 0.28$ is found. With the exception of the $ϕ$-meson, an excellent description of the experimental data is found.
We compute the approximate cross section $σ_n^{(0)}$ for producing $n-2$ {\it resolved} gluons in a gluon-gluon collision, using the Parke-Taylor formula regularized in a Lorentz invariant manner. We find, in double leading logarithm approximation, that \[ σ_{n}^{(0)} \approx \frac{1}{s} \left( \frac{N_cα_s}{2 π\sqrt{12}} \ \ln^{2} (s/s_{cut})\right)^{n-2}\ \ , \] where $\sqrt{s_{cut}}$ is the minimum invariant mass for a resolved gluon pair. There is no factor of $1/(n-2)!$ multiplying the expression. We present additional numerical results, and comment on their implications for perturbative …
We show that the dependence of the charged particle multiplicity on the centre-of-mass energy of the collision is, in the String Percolation Model, driven by the same power law behavior in both proton-proton and nucleus- nucleus collisions. The observed different growths are a result of energy- momentum constraints that limit the number of formed strings at low en- ergy. Based on the very good description of the existing data, we provide predictions for future high energy LHC runs.
Oscillations of cumulant moments of multiplicity distributions at high ranks, evolution of factorial moments with bin sizes (intermittency, fractality), zeros of the truncated generating functions of multiplicity distributions, and charge fluctuations in multiparticle production processes are discussed.
In the present work, we study the recent collision energy and multiplicity dependence of the charged particle transverse momentum spectra as measured by the ALICE collaboration in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV using the non-extensive Tsallis distribution and the Boltzmann-Gibbs Blast Wave (BGBW) model. A thermodynamically consistent form of the Tsallis distribution is used to extract the kinetic freeze-out parameters from the transverse momentum spectra of charged particles at mid-rapidity. In addition, a comprehensive study of fitting range dependence of transverse momentum …
The statistical model with exact conservation of baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness - the Canonical Statistical Model (CSM) - is used to analyze the dependence of yields of light nuclei at midrapidity on charged pion multiplicity at the LHC. The CSM calculations are performed assuming baryon-symmetric matter, using the recently developed Thermal-FIST package. The light nuclei-to-proton yield ratios show a monotonic increase with charged pion multiplicity, with a saturation at the corresponding grand-canonical values in the high-multiplicity limit, in good qualitative agreement wit…
A study of prompt and non-prompt J/$ψ$ production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in inelastic proton--proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV based on calculations using the PYTHIA8 Monte Carlo is reported. Recent experimental data shows an intriguing stronger-than-linear increase of the self-normalized J/$ψ$ yield with multiplicity; several models, based on initial or final state effects, have been able to describe the observed behaviour. In this paper, the microscopic reasons for this behaviour, like the role of multiple parton interactions, c…
The multiplicity of heavy quarks from gluon splitting in e+e- annihilation has now been theoretically calculated and experimentally measured at LEP. However, the experimental measurement requires theoretical input for the shape of the multiplicity with respect to an event shape. In this paper we calculate the multiplicity of heavy quarks from gluon splitting in e+e- annihilation as a function of the heavy jet mass of the event, to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We compare our result with Monte Carlo predictions.
Estimation of multiplicity of muons and pions production at high energy proton-nuclei collisions is given. Both QED and QCD contributions are considered for peripheral kinematics of muon pair and $σ$-meson production, keeping in mind it's final conversion to muons. An attempt to explain the excess of positive charged muons compared to negative one in cosmic muon showers is given. We derive the dependence of cross-section of $n$ pairs as a function of $n$ at large n as $d^n(n!n^2)^{-1}$.
In this paper we study the dependence of Bose-Einstein correlations on the multiplicity of an event. We found that events with large multiplicity, stem from the production of several parton showers, while the additional production of small multiplicity in the central rapidity region (central diffraction), gives a negligible contribution due to emission of soft gluons, that leads to the Sudakov suppression of the exclusive production of two gluon jets. Hence, the Bose-Einstein correlation is the main source of the azimuthal angle correlations which generates $v_n$ with odd and even $n$. We foun…
We discuss role of absorbtion and antishadowing in particle production. Antishadowing, which leads to domination of elastic scattering at high energies, appears to be consistent with growth of mean multiplicity in hadronic collisions. Moreover, we demonstrate possibility to reproduce power-like energy behavior of the mean multiplicity in the model with antishadowing and discuss physical implications of such behavior for the hadron structure.
We present a simple gluon production picture which is based on the McLerran-Venugopalan model and gluon BFKL evolution in relativistic heavy ion collision. Results for the multiplicity and transverse energy distribution in both the central and forward rapidity regions for gluon production in early stages of heavy ion collisions at the LHC are given. Finally, we provide a general qualitative discussion of the consequences of the forward rapidity behavior of produced gluons.
We investigate two- and three-particle intensity correlation functions of pions in relativistic heavy ion collisions for different colliding energies. Based on three models of particle production, we analyze the degree to which the pion sources are chaotic in the SPS S+Pb, Pb+Pb and the RHIC Au+Au collisions. The ``chaoticity'', $λ$, of the two-particle correlation functions is corrected for long-lived resonance decays. The effect of the partial Coulomb correction is also examined. Although the partially coherent model gives a result which is consistent with that of STAR, the chaotic fraction …
The generalization of the Glauber formula for cumulative production events is derived. On its basis the multiplicity distribution in such events is related to the one in the minimum bias events. As compared to the rare events of type $C$, the formula involves a shift in the arguments determined by the multiplicity from a collision with a cluster of several nucleons.
An unexpected result at the RHIC and the LHC is the observation that high-multiplicity hadronic events in heavy-ion and proton-proton collisions are distributed as two "ridges", approximately flat in rapidity and opposite in azimuthal angle. We propose that the origin of these events is due to the inelastic collisions of aligned gluonic flux tubes that underly the color confinement of the quarks in each proton. We predict that high-multiplicity hadronic ridges will also be produced in the high energy photon-photon collisions accessible at the LHC in ultra-peripheral proton-proton collisions or…
After inserting the heavy quark mass dependence into QCD partonic evolution equations, we determine the mean charged hadron multiplicity and second multiplicity correlators of jets produced in high energy collisions. We thereby extend the so-called dead cone effect to the phenomenology of multiparticle production in QCD jets and find that the average multiplicity of heavy-quark initiated jets decreases significantly as compared to the massless case, even taking into account the weak decay products of the leading primary quark. We emphasize the relevance of our study as a complementary check of…
Following previous work [1], we propose to analyze the rapidity dependence of transverse momentum and transverse-momentum multiplicity correlations. We demonstrate that the orthogonal polynomial expansion of the latter has the potential to discriminate between models of particle production.
We provide quantitative predictions for the rapidity, centrality and energy dependencies of inclusive charged-hadron productions for the forthcoming LHC measurements in nucleus-nucleus collisions based on the idea of gluon saturation in the color-glass condensate framework. Our formulation gives very good descriptions of the first data from the LHC for the inclusive charged-hadron production in proton-proton collisions, the deep inelastic scattering at HERA at small Bjorken-x, and the hadron multiplicities in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC.
Multiplicity distributions $P(N)$ measured in multiparticle production processes are most frequently described by the Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD). However, with increasing collision energy some systematic discrepancies become more and more apparent. They are usually attributed to the possible multi-source structure of the production process and described using a multi-NBD form of the multiplicity distribution. We investigate the possibility of keeping a single NBD but with its parameters depending on the multiplicity $N$. This is done by modifying the widely known clan model of partic…
The production of light anti- and hyper-nuclei provides unique observables to characterise the system created in high energy proton-proton (pp), proton-nucleus (pA) and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions. In particular, nuclei and hyper-nuclei are special objects with respect to non-composite hadrons (such as pions, kaons, protons, etc.), because their size is comparable to a fraction or the whole system created in the collision. Their formation is typically described within the framework of coalescence and thermal-statistical production models. In order to distinguish between the two production …
In this contribution we review recent progress with fixed-order QCD predictions for the production of a vector boson in association with jets at hadron colliders, using the programs BlackHat and SHERPA. We review general features of next-to-leading-order (NLO) predictions for the production of a massive vector boson in association with four jets. We also discuss how precise descriptions of vector-boson production can be applied to the determination of backgrounds to new physics signals. Here we focus on data-driven backgrounds to a missing-energy-plus-jets search performed by CMS. Finally, we …
Multiplicity and pseudorapidity ($η$) density ($dN_{\rm ch}/dη$) distributions of charged hadrons provide key information towards understanding the particle production mechanisms and initial conditions of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. However, detector constraints limit the $η$-range across which charged particle measurements can be carried out. Extrapolating the measured distributions to large $η$-range by parameterizing measured distributions and by using calculations from event generators, we characterize the production of charged particles over the full kinematic range. In the present …
