The distribution of ionised hydrogen during the epoch of reionization (EoR) has a complex morphology. We propose to measure the three-dimensional topology of ionised regions using the Betti numbers. These quantify the topology using the number of components, tunnels and cavities in any given field. Based on the results for a set of reionization simulations we find that the Betti numbers of the ionisation field show a characteristic evolution during reionization, with peaks in the different Betti numbers characterising different stages of the process. The shapes of their evolutionary curves can be fitted with simple analytical functions. We also observe that the evolution of the Betti numbers shows a clear connection with the percolation of the ionized and neutral regions and differs between different reionization scenarios. Through these properties, the Betti numbers provide a more useful description of the topology than the widely studied Euler characteristic or genus. The morphology of the ionisation field will be imprinted on the redshifted 21-cm signal from the EoR. We construct mock image cubes using the properties of the low-frequency element of the future Square Kilometre Array and show that we can extract the Betti numbers from such datasets if an observation time of 1000 h is used. Even for a much shorter observation time of 100 h, some topological information can be extracted for the middle and later stages of reionization. We also find that the topological information extracted from the mock 21-cm observations can put constraints on reionization models.
We explore the possibility of constraining model parameters of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) from 21cm brightness temperature maps, using a combination of morphological descriptors constructed from the eigenvalues of the Contour Minkowski Tensor (CMT), Betti numbers (count of connected regions $n_{con}$ and holes $n_{hole}$) and the area of structures in the excursion set of the field. We use a three parameter model of EoR simulated using 21\textrm{cmFAST}, namely the ionizing efficiency of sources $ζ$, the minimum virial temperature $T_{vir}$ required for collapse into a halo and the maximu…

The 21-cm PDF (i.e., distribution of pixel brightness temperatures) is expected to be highly non-Gaussian during reionization and to provide important information on the distribution of density and ionization. We measure the 21-cm PDF as a function of redshift in a large simulation of cosmic reionization and propose a simple empirical fit. Guided by the simulated PDF, we then carry out a maximum likelihood analysis of the ability of upcoming experiments to measure the shape of the 21-cm PDF and derive from it the cosmic reionization history. Under the strongest assumptions, we find that upcomi…
During cosmic reionization, the 21-cm brightness fluctuations were highly non-Gaussian, and complementary statistics can be extracted from the distribution of pixel brightness temperatures that are not derivable from the 21-cm power spectrum. One such statistic is the 21-cm difference PDF, the probability distribution function of the difference in the 21-cm brightness temperatures between two points, as a function of the distance between the points. Guided by 21-cm difference PDFs extracted from simulations, we perform a maximum likelihood analysis on mock observational data, and analyze the a…
The temperature of the low-density intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshift is sensitive to the timing and nature of hydrogen and HeII reionization, and can be measured from Lyman-alpha forest absorption spectra. Since the memory of intergalactic gas to heating during reionization gradually fades, measurements as close as possible to reionization are desirable. In addition, measuring the IGM temperature at sufficiently high redshifts should help to isolate the effects of hydrogen reionization since HeII reionization starts later, at lower redshift. Motivated by this, we model the IGM temper…
One of the main challenges in probing the reionization epoch using the redshifted 21 cm line is that the magnitude of the signal is several orders smaller than the astrophysical foregrounds. One of the methods to deal with the problem is to avoid a wedge-shaped region in the Fourier $k_{\perp} - k_{\parallel}$ space which contains the signal from the spectrally smooth foregrounds. However, measuring the spherically averaged power spectrum using only modes outside this wedge (i.e., in the reionization window), leads to a bias. We provide a prescription, based on expanding the power spectrum in …
The X-ray background during the epoch of reionization is currently poorly constrained. We demonstrate that it is possible to use first generation 21 cm experiments to calibrate it. Using the semi-numerical simulation, 21cmFAST, we calculate the dependence of the 21 cm power spectrum on the X-ray background flux. Comparing the signal to the sensitivity of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) we find that in the redshift interval z=8-14 the 21 cm signal is detectable based on the upper limit set by the present-day unresolved soft X-ray background. We show that there is no degeneracy between the X…
The Thomson optical depth from reionization is a limiting factor in measuring the amplitude of primordial fluctuations, and hence in measuring physics that affects the low-redshift amplitude, such as the neutrino masses. Current constraints on the optical depth, based on directly measuring large-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization, are challenging due to foregrounds and systematic effects. Here, we consider an indirect measurement of large-scale polarization, using observed maps of small-scale polarization together with maps of fields that distort the CMB, such as CMB lensing …
One of the most exciting advances of the current generation of telescopes has been the detection of galaxies during the epoch of reionization, using deep fields that have pushed these instruments to their limits. It is essential to optimize our analyses of these fields in order to extract as much information as possible from them. In particular, standard methods of measuring the galaxy luminosity function discard information on large-scale dark matter density fluctuations, even though this large-scale structure drives galaxy formation and reionization during the Cosmic Dawn. Measuring these de…
The designs of the first generation of cosmological 21-cm observatories are split between single dipole experiments which integrate over a large patch of sky in order to find the global (spectral) signature of reionization, and interferometers with arcminute-scale angular resolution whose goal is to measure the 3D power spectrum of ionized regions during reionization. We examine whether intermediate scale instruments with complete Fourier (uv) coverage are capable of placing new constraints on reionization. We find that even without using a full power spectrum analysis, the global redshift of …
We present the relation between the genus in cosmology and the Betti numbers for excursion sets of three- and two-dimensional smooth Gaussian random fields, and numerically investigate the Betti numbers as a function of threshold level. Betti numbers are topological invariants of figures that can be used to distinguish topological spaces. In the case of the excursion sets of a three-dimensional field there are three possibly non-zero Betti numbers; $β_0$ is the number of connected regions, $β_1$ is the number of circular holes, and $β_2$ is the number of three-dimensional voids. Their sum with…
Ultraviolet emission from the first generation of stars in the Universe ionized the intergalactic medium in a process which was completed by z~6; the wavelength of these photons has been redshifted by (1+z) into the near infrared today and can be measured using instruments situated above the Earth's atmosphere. First flying in February 2009, the Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER) comprises four instruments housed in a single reusable sounding rocket borne payload. CIBER will measure spatial anisotropies in the extragalactic IR background caused by cosmological structure from the epo…
Telescopes aiming to measure 21cm emission from the Epoch of Reionization must toe a careful line, balancing the need for raw sensitivity against the stringent calibration requirements for removing bright foregrounds. It is unclear what the optimal design is for achieving both of these goals. Via a pedagogical derivation of an interferometer's response to the power spectrum of 21cm reionization fluctuations, we show that even under optimistic scenarios, first-generation arrays will yield low-SNR detections, and that different compact array configurations can substantially alter sensitivity. We…

The upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA-Low) will map the distribution of neutral hydrogen during reionization, and produce a tremendous amount of 3D tomographic data. These images cubes will be subject to instrumental limitations, such as noise and limited resolution. Here we present SegU-Net, a stable and reliable method for identification of neutral and ionized regions in these images. SegU-Net is a U-Net architecture based convolutional neural network (CNN) for image segmentation. It is capable of segmenting our image data into meaningful features (ionized and neutral regions) with greate…
The latest measurements of CMB electron scattering optical depth reported by Planck significantly reduces the allowed space of HI reionization models, pointing toward a later ending and/or less extended phase transition than previously believed. Reionization impulsively heats the intergalactic medium (IGM) to $\sim10^4$ K, and owing to long cooling and dynamical times in the diffuse gas, comparable to the Hubble time, memory of reionization heating is retained. Therefore, a late ending reionization has significant implications for the structure of the $z\sim5-6$ Lyman-$α$ (ly$α$) forest. Using…
BFORE is a NASA high-altitude ultra-long-duration balloon mission proposed to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) across half the sky during a 28-day mid-latitude flight launched from Wanaka, New Zealand. With the unique access to large angular scales and high frequencies provided by the balloon platform, BFORE will significantly improve measurements of the optical depth to reionization tau, breaking parameter degeneracies needed for a measurement of neutrino mass with the CMB. The large angular scale data will enable BFORE to hunt for the large-scale gravitational wave B-mode signal…
Measuring the small primordial nonGaussianity (PNG) predicted by cosmic inflation theories may help diagnose them. The detectability of PNG by its imprint on the 21cm power spectrum from the epoch of reionization is reassessed here in terms of $f_{NL}$, the local nonlinearity parameter. We find that an optimum, multi-frequency observation by SKA can achieve $Δf_{NL} \sim 3$ (comparable to recent Planck CMB limits), while a cosmic-variance-limited array of this size like Omniscope can even detect $Δf_{NL} \sim 0.2$. This substantially revises the methods and results of previous work.
The neutral intergalactic medium in the post reionization epoch allows us to study cosmological structure formation through the observation of the redshifted 21 cm signal and the Lyman-alpha forest. We investigate the possibility of measuring the total neutrino mass through the suppression of power in the matter power spectrum. We investigate the possibility of measuring the neutrino mass through its imprint on the cross-correlation power spectrum of the 21-cm signal and the Lyman-alpha forest. We consider a radio-interferometric measurement of the 21 cm signal with a SKA1-mid like radio teles…
Detections and non-detections of Lyman alpha (Ly$α$) emission from $z>6$ galaxies ($<1$ Gyr after the Big Bang) can be used to measure the timeline of cosmic reionization. Of key interest to measuring reionization's mid-stages, but also increasing observational challenge, are observations at z > 7, where Ly$α$ redshifts to near infra-red wavelengths. Here we present a search for z > 7.2 Ly$α$ emission in 53 intrinsically faint Lyman Break Galaxy candidates, gravitationally lensed by massive galaxy clusters, in the KMOS Lens-Amplified Spectroscopic Survey (KLASS). With integration times of ~7-1…
Observations of the early Universe suggest that reionization was complete by $z\sim6$, however, the exact history of this process is still unknown. One method for measuring the evolution of the neutral fraction throughout this epoch is via observing the Ly$α$ damping wings of high-redshift quasars. In order to constrain the neutral fraction from quasar observations, one needs an accurate model of the quasar spectrum around Ly$α$, after the spectrum has been processed by its host galaxy but before it is altered by absorption and damping in the intervening IGM. In this paper, we present a novel …
We probe what constraints for the global ionized hydrogen fraction the Void Probability Function (VPF) clustering can give for the Lyman-Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (LAGER) narrowband survey as a function of area. Neutral hydrogen acts like a fog for Lyman-alpha emission, and measuring the drop in the luminosity function of Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs) has been used to constrain the ionization fraction in narrowband surveys. However, the clustering of LAEs is independent from the luminosity function's inherent evolution, and can offer additional constraints for reionization under …
Measuring the density of the intergalactic medium using quasar sightlines in the epoch of reionization is challenging due to the saturation of Lyman-$α$ absorption. Near a luminous quasar, however, the enhanced radiation creates a proximity zone observable in the quasar spectra where the Lyman-$α$ absorption is not saturated. In this study, we use $10$ high-resolution ($R\gtrsim 10,000$) $z\sim 6$ quasar spectra from the extended XQR-30 sample to measure the density field in the quasar proximity zones. We find a variety of environments within $3$ pMpc distance from the quasars. We compare the …
We have run a new suite of simulations that solve hydrodynamics and radiative transfer simultaneously to study helium II reionization. Our suite of simulations employs various models for populating quasars inside of dark matter halos, which affect the He II reionization history. In particular, we are able to explore the impact that differences in the timing and duration of reionization have on observables. We examine the thermal signature that reionization leaves on the IGM, and measure the temperature-density relation. As previous studies have shown, we confirm that the photoheating feedback …
We consider the effectiveness of foreground cleaning in the recovery of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization sourced by gravitational waves for tensor-to-scalar ratios in the range $0<r<0.1$. Using the planned survey area, frequency bands, and sensitivity of the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS), we simulate maps of Stokes $Q$ and $U$ parameters at 40, 90, 150, and 220 GHz, including realistic models of the CMB, diffuse Galactic thermal dust and synchrotron foregrounds, and Gaussian white noise. We use linear combinations (LCs) of the simulated multifrequency data to obt…
A measurement of the cosmological 21 cm signal remains a promising but as-of-yet unattained ambition of radio astronomy. A positive detection would provide direct observations of key unexplored epochs of our cosmic history, including the cosmic dark ages and reionization. In this paper, we concentrate on measurements of the spatial monopole of the 21 cm brightness temperature as a function of redshift (the "global signal"). Most global experiments to date have been single-element experiments. In this paper, we show how an interferometer can be designed to be sensitive to the monopole mode of t…
We use morphological descriptors, Betti numbers and Contour Minkowski Tensor (CMT) on 21cm brightness temperature excursion sets, to study the ionization and heating history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) during and before the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The ratio of eigenvalues of the CMT denoted by $β$, gives shape information while it's trace gives the contour length of holes and connected regions. We simulate the matter density, neutral hydrogen fraction, spin temperature and brightness temperature field using the publicly available code 21cmFAST in a redshift range of $z=20.22$ to $z=…
The cross-correlation between the 21 cm field and the galaxy distribution is a potential probe of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The 21 cm signal traces neutral gas in the intergalactic medium and, on large spatial scales, this should be anti-correlated with the high-redshift galaxy distribution which partly sources and tracks the ionized gas. In the near future, interferometers such as the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) are projected to provide extremely sensitive measurements of the 21 cm power spectrum. At the same time, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) will prod…
In this paper we establish the accuracy and robustness of a fast estimator for the bispectrum - the "FFT bispectrum estimator". The implementation of the estimator presented here offers speed and simplicity benefits over a direct sampling approach. We also generalise the derivation so it may be easily be applied to any order polyspectra, such as the trispectrum, with the cost of only a handful of FFTs. All lower order statistics can also be calculated simultaneously for little extra cost. To test the estimator we make use of a non-linear density field, and for a more strongly non-Gaussian test…
After reionization, emission in the 21 cm hyperfine transition provides a direct probe of neutral hydrogen distributed in galaxies. Different from galaxy redshift surveys, observation of baryon acoustic oscillations in the cumulative 21 cm emission may offer an attractive method for constraining dark energy properties at moderate redshifts. Keys to this program are techniques to extract the faint cosmological signal from various contaminants, such as detector noise and continuum foregrounds. In this paper, we investigate the possible systematic and statistical errors in the acoustic scale esti…
Aims. Ly-alpha emitters (LAEs) can be detected out to very high redshifts during the epoch of reionization. The evolution of the LAE luminosity function with redshift is a direct probe of the Ly-alpha transmission of the intergalactic medium (IGM), and therefore of the IGM neutral-hydrogen fraction. Measuring the Ly-alpha luminosity function (LF) of LAEs at redshift z = 7.7 therefore allows us to constrain the ionizing state of the Universe at this redshift. Methods. We observed three 7.5'x7.5' fields with the HAWK-I instrument at the VLT with a narrow band filter centred at 1.06 $μ$m and targ…
We study the impact of instrumental systematics on the variance, skewness, and kurtosis of redshifted 21 cm intensity fluctuation observations from the Epoch of Reionization. We simulate realistic 21 cm observations based on the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) Phase I reionization experiment, using the array's point spread function (PSF) and antenna beam patterns, full-sky 21 cm models, and the FHD imaging pipeline. We measure the observed redshift evolution of pixel probability density functions (PDF) and one-point statistics from the simulated maps, comparing them to the measurements derived…
We propose a method of measuring extremely weak magnetic fields in the intergalactic medium prior to and during the epoch of cosmic reionization. The method utilizes the Larmor precession of spin-polarized neutral hydrogen in the triplet state of the hyperfine transition. This precession leads to a systematic change in the brightness temperature fluctuations of the 21-cm line from the high-redshift universe, and thus the statistics of these fluctuations encode information about the magnetic field the atoms are immersed in. The method is most suited to probing fields that are coherent on large …
In the first paper of this series, we showed that the CMB quadrupole at high redshifts results in a small circular polarization of the emitted 21 cm radiation. In this paper we forecast the sensitivity of future radio experiments to measure the CMB quadrupole during the era of first cosmic light ($z\sim 20$). The tomographic measurement of 21 cm circular polarization allows us to construct a 3D remote quadrupole field. Measuring the $B$-mode component of this remote quadrupole field can be used to put bounds on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. We make Fisher forecasts for a future Fast Fourier …
