We present a full kinematic analysis of neutrino-nucleus charged current quasielastic interactions based on the Local Fermi Gas model and the Random PhaseApproximation. The model was implemented in the NEUT Monte Carlo framework, which allows us to investigate potentially measurable observables, including hadron distributions. We compare the predictions simultaneously to the most recent T2K and MINERvA charged current (CC) inclusive, CC0$π$ and transverse kinematic-imbalance variable results. We pursuit a microscopic interpretation of the relevant reaction mechanisms, with the aim of achieving in neutrino oscillation experiments a correct reconstruction of the incoming neutrino kinematics, free of conceptual biasses. Such study is of the utmost importance for the ambitious experimental program which is underway to precisely determine neutrino properties, test the three-generation paradigm, establish the order of mass eigenstates and investigate leptonic CP violation.
In view of the major advances achieved by the CLAS experiments in studying the N* electroexcitation amplitudes, as well as further extension of these studies in the experiments with CLAS12, we present an approach for the evaluation of the resonant contributions to inclusive electron scattering off protons. For the first time, the resonant contributions are determined from the experimental results on N* electrocouplings available from the data analyses of exclusive meson electroproduction off protons. This is a useful benchmark for future endeavours on understanding the transition region betwee…
The cross section for exclusive $π^+π^-$ and $π^0π^0$ meson pairs production in peripheral ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is calculated at the energy available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, i.e., $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.5$ TeV. The cross section for elementary $γγ\toππ$ process is calculated with the help of the pQCD Brodsky-Lepage approach with the distribution amplitude used recently to describe the pion transition form factor measured by the BaBar Collaboration.
Single and double inclusive cross-sections in nucleus-nucleus collisions are derived in the perturbative QCD with interacting BFKL pomerons in the quasi-classical approximation.
We discuss a new approach to final state interactions, that keeps explicitly into account the virtuality of the ejected nucleon in quasi-elastic $A(e,e'p)X$ scattering at very large $Q^2$, and we present some recent results, at moderately large $Q^2$ values, for the nuclear transparency in $^4He$, $^{16}O$ and $^{40}Ca$ and for the momentum distributions of $^4He$.
We study single inclusive hadron production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions in the CGC framework. The parameters in the calculation are determined solely by standard nuclear geometry and by electron-proton deep inelastic scattering data, which is fit using the running coupling BK equation. We show that it is possible to obtain a good fit of the HERA inclusive cross section also without an anomalous dimension in the initial condition. We argue that one must consistently use the proton transverse area as measured by a high virtuality probe in DIS also for the single inclusive cros…
Exploiting recently obtained analytic solutions of classical Yang-Mills equations for higher order perturbations in the field of the dilute object (proton), we derive the complete first saturation correction to the single inclusive semi-hard gluon production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions by applying the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formula. We thus finalize the program started by Balitsky (see Ref.~\cite{Balitsky:2004rr}) and independently by Chirilli, Kovchegov and Wertepny (see Ref.~\cite{Chirilli:2015tea}) albeit using a very different approach to carry out our calculati…
A parton picture of inclusive quasi-elastic electron-nucleus scattering, where individual nucleons are treated as (non point-like) partons of the nucleus, is presented. All the necessary target-mass corrections to asymptotic scaling are evaluated and a new scaling variable is obtained. Recent inclusive data from Jefferson Lab are analyzed and shown to scale in terms of the new variable. The new approach allows to extract in a model-independent way the nucleon light-cone momentum distribution in the nucleus.
We present a complete comparison of semi-inclusive $ν_μ$-$^{12}$C cross-section measurements by T2K and MINER$ν$A collaborations with the predictions from the SuSAv2-MEC model implemented in the neutrino-nucleus event generator GENIE and an unfactorized approach based on the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation (RDWIA). Results, that include cross sections as function of the final muon and proton kinematics and correlations between both, show that the agreement with data obtained by the RDWIA approach, that accounts for final-state interactions, matches or improves GENIE-SuSAv2 pr…
We compare the results of the relativistic Green's function model with the experimental data of the charged-current inclusive differential neutrino-nucleus cross sections published by the T2K Collaboration. The model, which is able to describe both MINER$ν$A and MiniBooNE charged-current quasielastic scattering data, underpredicts the inclusive T2K cross sections.
We investigate the role of exclusive channels in semi-inclusive electroproduction of pions and kaons. Using the QCD factorization theorem for hard exclusive processes we evaluate the cross sections for exclusive pseudoscalar and vector meson production in terms of generalized parton distributions and meson distribution amplitudes. We investigate the uncertainties arising from the modeling of the nonperturbative input quantities. Combining these results with available experimental data, we compare the cross sections for exclusive channels to that obtained from quark fragmentation in semi-inclus…
In a simplified model of Multiple Parton Interactions the inclusive cross sections, of processes with large momentum transfer exchange, acquire the statistical meaning of factorial moments of the distribution in multiplicity of interactions, while more exclusive cross sections, which can provide complementary information on the interaction dynamics, become experimentally viable. Inclusive and exclusive cross sections are linked by sum rules, which can be tested experimentally.
In this paper, the semileptonic decays of heavy mesons are treated fully relativistically. By means of an effective vertex, the effect of Fermi momentum are included both at the inclusive and at the exclusive levels, and the spin of both parent and daughter particles are taken into account. The differential decay rates with respect to the lepton energy and momentum transfer are compared with data from ARGUS and CLEO.
In this work we investigate the inclusive and exclusive photoproduction of dileptons, which is relevant for the physics programme to be studied in the proposed electron-proton collider, the LHeC. In the inclusive case, the process is sensitive to the parton distribution functions in the photon whereas the exclusive channel is connected to the small-$x$ QCD dynamics. For the latter, we investigate the role played by saturation physics at a very high energy scenario. The estimates for production cross sections and the number of events are presented.
Heavy nuclei at collider energies are a source of high energy Weizsaecker-Williams photons. This photon flux may be utilized to study high energy photon-nucleus interactions. Here we concentrate on the coherent diffractive production of heavy vector mesons on nuclear targets and show how it probes the unintegrated glue of the nucleus in the saturation domain. We present predictions for rapidity distributions of exclusive coherent J/Psi and Upsilon mesons which can be measured by the ALICE experiment at the LHC.
We discuss experimental signatures capable of nearly immediate study that would discern/constrain new physics manifested via enhanced gluonic penguin decays of the $b$.
We show that gluon saturation gives rise to a strong modification of the scaling in both the nuclear mass number $A$ and the virtuality $Q^2$ of the vector meson production cross-section in exclusive deep-inelastic scattering off nuclei. We present qualitative analytic expressions for how the scaling exponents are modified as well as quantitative predictions that can be tested at an Electron-Ion Collider.
We investigate the effect of soft gluon radiations on the azimuthal angle correlation between the total and relative momenta of two jets in inclusive and exclusive dijet processes. We show that the final state effect induces a sizable $\cos(2ϕ)$ anisotropy due to gluon emissions near the jet cones. The phenomenological consequences of this observation are discussed for various collider experiments, including diffractive processes in ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, inclusive and diffractive dijet production at the EIC, and inclusive dijet in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions at the LHC.
The contribution of both inclusive and exclusive cross-section data from HERA to our knowledge of parton distribution functions is reviewed and future prospects are outlined.
We discuss the saturation of the parton density in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energiesusing a Pomeron approach. Our predictions for the particle density in ion-ion collisions at RHIC energies can be utilized as the background for the observation of possible quark-gluon plasma production.
Some emerging difficulties in the theoretical description of exclusive semileptonic $\bar B$ decays are discussed in the context of the quark model. While there are no unambiguous problems at this time, I discuss physics beyond the valence quark model which should eventually be probed by precision measurements of $\bar B$ semileptonic decays.
We consider the effective Hamiltonian of four quark operators in the Standard Model in the exclusive and quasi-inclusive decays of the type $B\to K^{(*)} η^{\prime}$, $B\to η' X_s$, where $X_s$ contains a single Kaon. Working in the factorization assumption we find that the four quark operators can account for the recently measured exclusive decays $B\to η^{\prime}(η) K$ and $B\to K π$ for appropriate choice of form factors but cannot explain the large quasi-inclusive rate.
We present theoretical evidence that the exclusive/inclusive ratio of semileptonic $Λ_b$-decays exceeds that of semileptonic B-decays where the experimental exclusive/inclusive ratio amounts to about 66%. We start from the observation that the spectator quark model provides a lower bound on the leading order Isgur-Wise function of the $Λ_b \to Λ_c$ transition in terms of the corresponding $B \to D,D^*$ mesonic Isgur-Wise function. Using experimental data for the $B \to D,D^*$ mesonic Isgur-Wise functions this bound is established. Applying a Bethe-Salpeter model including spectator quark inter…
The cross sections for exclusive muon pair production in nucleus - nucleus collisions are calculated and several differential distributions are shown. Realistic (Fourier transform of charge density) charge form factors of nuclei are used and the corresponding results are compared with the cross sections calculated with monopole form factor often used in the literature and discussed recently in the context of higher-order QED corrections. Absorption effects are discussed and quantified. The cross sections obtained with realistic form factors are significantly smaller than those obtained with th…
We investigate the single-spin asymmetries in inclusive and exclusive processes of electron-proton scattering and electron-positron annihilation. In the decomposition of hadronic tensor, a Lorentz symmetric spin-dependent term is generally present. The existence of such a term implies single-spin asymmetries in these processes and these single-spin asymmetries for baryons can be understood in a unified manner. We argue that it is important to measure the single-spin asymmetries in both inclusive and exclusive processes for the $Λ$ production at the present B-factories. This will lead to the fi…
We study the quasi--elastic contribution to the inclusive $(ν_l,ν_l N)$, $(ν_l,l^- N)$, $({\bar ν}_l,{\bar ν}_l N)$ and $({\bar ν}_l,l^+ N)$ reactions in nuclei using a Monte Carlo simulation method to account for the rescattering of the outgoing nucleon. As input, we take the reaction probability from the microscopical many body framework developed in Phys. Rev. {\bf C70} (2004) 055503 for charged-current induced reactions, while for neutral currents we use results from a natural extension of the model described in that reference. The nucleon emission process studied here is a clear signal fo…
The Quasi-Elastic (QE) contribution of the nuclear inclusive electron scattering model developed in Nucl. Phys. A627 (1997) 543 is extended to the study of electroweak Charged Current (CC) induced nuclear reactions, at intermediate energies of interest for future neutrino oscillation experiments. The model accounts for, among other nuclear effects, long range nuclear (RPA) correlations, Final State Interaction (FSI) and Coulomb corrections. Predictions for the inclusive muon capture in $^{12}$C and the reaction $^{12}$C $(ν_μ,μ^-)X$ near threshold are also given. RPA correlations are shown to …
In this paper, it is shown that in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, the main source for central exclusive diffractive Higgs production is photon-photon fusion. At the LHC energy, the total cross section for this process is about 0.6 pb (for proton-gold scattering), and 3.9 nb (for gold-gold collision) while the gluon-gluon fusion leads to the value of the cross section for CED Higgs production which is about 0.1 nb and 3.9 pb respectively.
Semi-inclusive neutrino-nucleus scattering, corresponding to the simultaneous detection of a lepton and one or more hadrons in the final state, is shown to be much more sensitive to nuclear effects than the inclusive process. The theoretical description of the semi-inclusive process is illustrated and some comparisons of relativistic plane wave impulse approximation (RPWIA) predictions with recent MicroBooNE, T2K and MINERvA data on argon and carbon are shown. The merit of new variables constructed to enhance particular nuclear effects is also illustrated and future developments going beyond t…
We investigate the role of the choice of the upper phase space limit Q in the Curci-Furmanski-Petronzio (CFP) factorization scheme, which exploits dimensional regularization MS scheme. We examine how the choice of Q influences the evaluation of the standard DGLAP (inclusive) evolution kernels, gaining experience needed in the construction of the exclusive Monte Carlo modelling of the NLO DGLAP evolution. In particular, we uncover three types of mechanisms which assure the independence on Q of the inclusive DGLAP kernels calculated in the CFP scheme. We use the examples of three types of the Fe…
We calculate the semi-inclusive processes B $\rightarrow X_{s} η_c$ and relate it to B $\rightarrow X_{s} ψ$ in next to leading order QCD, and show how it can be used to determine an accurate value of $f_{η_{c}}$. The exclusive modes B $\rightarrow$ K$η_c$ and B $\rightarrow$ K$ψ$ also yield similar results, whereas B $\rightarrow$ K$^*η_c$ and B $\rightarrow$ K$^*ψ$ can provide valuable information on hadronic form factors. We also estimate the branching ratios and the ratios of exclusive to inclusive decay modes dominated by $b \rightarrow s\e$.
We present a model for weak CC induced nuclear reactions at energies of interest for current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. This model is a natural extension of the work of Refs.[1,2], where the QE contribution to the inclusive electron and neutrino scattering on nuclei was analyzed. The model is based on a systematic many body expansion of the gauge boson absorption modes that includes one, two and even three body mechanisms, as well as the excitation of Delta isobars. The whole scheme has no free parameters, besides those previously adjusted to the weak pion production off the …
The possibility of using a tensor polarized deuteron target in electroproduction reactions creates new opportunities for studying different phenomena related to the short-range hadronic and nuclear physics. The use of tensor polarized deuteron allows to isolate smaller than average inter-nucleon distances for the bound two-nucleon system. In this report we consider several of high $Q^2$ reactions which are particularly sensitive to the short-range two-nucleon configurations in the deuteron. The one is the relativistic dynamics of electron-bound-nucleon scattering which can be studied in both i…
In this talk we present theoretical evidence that the exclusive/inclusive ratio of semileptonic Lambda_b-decays exceeds that of semileptonic B-decays, where the experimental exclusive/inclusive ratio amounts to about 66%. We start from the observation that the spectator quark model provides a lower bound on the leading order Isgur-Wise function of the Lambda_b -> Lambda_c transition in terms of the corresponding B -> D,D^* mesonic Isgur-Wise function. Using experimental data for the B -> D,D^* mesonic Isgur-Wise functions this bound is established. Applying a QCD sum rule estimate of the Lambd…
Inclusive cross-sections for gluon jet production are studied numerically in the perturbative QCD pomeron model for central collisions of identical nuclei at high energies. Two forms for the inclusive cross-sections, with and without emission from the triple pomeron vertex, are compared. The difference was found to reduce to a numerical factor 0.8$÷$ 09 for momenta $k$ below the saturation momentum $Q_s$. Above $Q_s$ no difference was found at all. The gluon spectrum was found to be $\sim A$ for $k<Q_s$ and $\sim A^{1.1}$ for $k>Q_s$. At large $k$ the spectrum falls as $1/k^{2.7÷3.3}$ flatteni…
We present results of an updated calculation of the 2p2h (two particle two hole) contribution to the neutrino-induced charge-current cross section. We provide also some exclusive observables, interesting from the point of view of experimental studies, e.g. distributions of momenta of the outgoing nucleons and of available energy, which we compare with the results obtained within the NEUT generator. We also compute, and separate from the total, the contributions of 3p3h mechanisms. Finally, we discuss the differences between the present results and previous implementations of the model in MC ev…
The large luminosity and the increased kinematical domain accessible at the LHC will allow to isolate large numbers of events with multiple parton collisions. Interestingly, the hadron is probed in different points contemporarily in the process, which allows to obtain information on the correlations between partons in the hadron structure. The whole experimentally accessible information on multiple parton collisions consists in the probability distribution of the elementary interactions, while the inclusive cross sections, usually considered in large p_t processes, acquire a precise statistica…
It is shown that in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of electrons off a complex nucleus A, the detection, in coincidence with the scattered electron, of a nucleus (A-1) in the ground state, as well as of a nucleon and a nucleus (A-2), also in the ground state, may provide unique information on several long standing problems, such as : i) the nature and the relevance of the final state interaction in DIS; ii) validity of the spectator mechanism in DIS; iii) the medium induced modifications of the nucleon structure function; iv) the origin of the EMC effect.
Using the recently found hA amplitude, single and double inclusive jet production rates on the nucleus are studied in the perturbative QCD with $N_c\to\infty$. Jet multiplicities are found to grow with $A$ and energy as $A^{2/9}s^Δ$ where $Δ$ is the BFKL intercept. Long range correlations are found to behave as $A^{4/9}s^{2Δ}$ and change from negative to positive at a certain high energy.
We calculate for the first time cross sections for single and central diffractive as well as exclusive diffractive production of dilepton pairs in proton-proton collisions. Several differential distributions are shown. The inclusive diffractive processes are calculated using diffractive parton distributions extracted from the analysis of diffractive structure function and dijet production at HERA. We find that the inclusive single-diffractive Drell-Yan process is by about 2 orders of magnitude smaller than ordinary Drell-Yan process. The central-diffractive processes are smaller by one order o…
We report recent results in rare B decays. Our focus will be on b -> d gamma and b -> s l^+ l^- transitions. We discuss their impact on the CKM phenomenology and their role within our search for new physics. In particular, we analyse the impact of a recent lattice QCD estimate of the B -> K* form factor at zero recoil. We also briefly discuss the presently available optimal theoretical tools for the inclusive and exclusive modes.
Both meson photoproduction and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering can potentially probe transversity properties of the nucleon. We explore how that potential can be realized dynamically. The role of rescattering in both exclusive and inclusive meson production as a source for single spin asymmetries is examined. Using a dynamical model, we evaluate the spin independent $\cos 2ϕ$ asymmetry associated with transversity of quarks inside unpolarized hadrons, at HERMES kinematics. We also explore the effects of rescattering on the transversity distribution of the nucleon.
An admixture of a right-handed $b \to c$ current in the semileptonic weak decays of the $B$ mesons would give a significantly different contribution to the inclusive rate of the decays $B \to l νX_c$ as compared to the exclusive decay $B \to D^* l ν$ at zero recoil. Thus a difference in the values of $|V_{cb}|$ extracted from the data on these two types of decay would measure such admixture. The present marginal mismatch in determination of $|V_{cb}|$ by the two methods can be interpreted as corresponding to $g_R/g_L \approx 0.14 \pm 0.18$.
We reconsider the perturbative next-to-leading calculation of the single inclusive hadron production in the framework of the hybrid formalism, applied to hadron production in proton-nucleus collisions. Our analysis, performed in the wave function approach, differs from the previous works in three points. First, we are careful to specify unambiguously the rapidity interval that has to be included in the evolution of the leading-order eikonal scattering amplitude. This is important, since varying this interval by a number of order unity changes the next-to-leading order correction that the calcu…
We analize semi-inclusive electron-nucleus processes e+A->e'+h+X at moderate Q**2 and energy transfer nu. Our results show that nucleons bound in the nuclear medium are distributed according to a function f_A that reduces to the standard light-cone distribution in the Bjorken limit and exhibits a sizeable Q**2-dependence at lower Q**2, particular Q**2 is order of nu**2.
The cross sections for the glueball candidates production in quasi-real photon-photon collisions and on central diffraction processes, i.e. double Pomeron exchange, in heavy ion interactions at RHIC and LHC are computed. The rates for these distinct production channels are compared and they may be a fruitful approach to the investigation of glueballs.
We show that the quasielastic (QE) response calculated with the SuSAv2 (superscaling approach) model, that relies on the scaling phenomenon observed in the analysis of (e,e') data and on the relativistic mean-field theory, is very similar to that from a relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation model when only the real part of the optical potentials is employed. The coincidence between the results from these two completely independent approaches, which satisfactorily agree with the inclusive data, reinforces the reliability of the quasielastic predictions stemming from both models and …
We compute the differential cross-section for inclusive prompt photon production in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) of electrons on nuclei at small $x$ in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective theory. The leading order (LO) computation in this framework resums leading logarithms in $x$ as well as power corrections to all orders in $Q_{s,A}^2/Q^2$, where $Q_{s,A}(x)$ is the nuclear saturation scale. This LO result is proportional to universal dipole and quadrupole Wilson line correlators in the nucleus. In the soft photon limit, the Low-Burnett-Kroll theorem allows us to…
Within the Standard Model, CP rate asymmetries for $B\to K^-π^{+,0}$ could reach 10%. With strong final state phases, they could go up to 20--30%, even for $\bar K^0π^-$ mode which would have opposite sign. We can account for $K^-π^{+}$, $\bar K^0π^-$ and $ϕK$ rate data with new physics enhanced color dipole coupling and destructive interference. Asymmetries could reach 40--60% for $Kπ$ and $ϕK$ modes and are all of the same sign. We are unable to account for $K^-π^0$ rate. Our inclusive study supports our exclusive results.
We compute the differential cross-section for inclusive prompt photon$+$quark production in deeply inelastic scattering of electrons off nuclei at small $x$ ($e+A$ DIS) in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. The result is expressed as a convolution of the leading order (in the strong coupling $α_{\mathrm{s}}$) impact factor for the process and universal dipole matrix elements, in the limit of hard photon transverse momentum relative to the nuclear saturation scale $Q_{s,A}(x)$. We perform a numerical study of this process for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion C…
Hard processes at the TeV scale exhibit enhanced (double log) EW corrections, that need resummation in view of the high level of precision of Next Linear Colliders. The fact that the weak sector is spontaneously broken causes some peculiarities with respect to unbroken theories like QCD. For observables that are exclusive with respect to $W,Z$ emission, some peculiar technical problems have yet to be solved. Surprisingly, double logarithmic enhancements are present even for inclusive observables like $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons, leading to violation of the Bloch-Nordsieck theorem. The last effect is p…
We propose a mechanism which can explain the large BR(B-> X_s eta')~ 10^(-3) observed by CLEO. In this mechanism, eta' is produced by the fusion of two gluons, one from QCD penguin b->sg and the other one emitted by the light quark inside the B meson. The inclusive decay rate which is calculated via using the factorization assumption, can easily account for the observed branching ratio. We also estimate the exclusive branching ratio BR(B->K eta')=7.0X10^(-5) which is in good agreement with the experimental data and present our prediction for K* mode BR(B->K* eta')=3.4X10^(-5).
We reconsider the possibility that the tension in the $|V_{cb}|$ determinations from inclusive and exclusive $B$ decay modes is due to a new physics effect. We modify the Standard Model effective Hamiltonian for semileptonic $b \to c$ transitions including a tensor operator with a lepton flavour dependent coupling $ε_T^\ell$, and investigate separately the muon and electron modes. The interference term between SM and NP, proportional to the lepton mass, has different impact in the inclusive and exclusive $B$ modes to muon. Moreover, even when the lepton mass is small as for the electron, the N…
In our work, we describe two types of Compton processes. As an example of an inclusive process, we consider the high-energy photoproduction of massive muon pairs off the nucleon. We analyze the process in the framework of the QCD parton model, in which the usual parton distributions emerge as a tool to describe the nucleon in terms of quark and gluonic degrees of freedom. To study its exclusive version, a new class of phenomenological functions is required, namely, generalized parton distributions. They can be considered as a generalization of the usual parton distributions measured in deeply …
Exploring the nucleon's sea quark and gluon structure is a prime objective of a future electron-ion collider (EIC). Many of the key questions require accurate differential semi-inclusive (spin/flavor decomposition, orbital motion) and exclusive (spatial distributions of quarks/gluons) DIS measurements in the region 0.01 < x < 0.3 and Q^2 ~ few 10 GeV^2. Such measurements could ideally be performed with a high-luminosity collider of moderate CM energy, s ~ 10^3 GeV^2, and relatively symmetric configuration, e.g. E_e/E_p = 5/30-60 GeV. Specific examples are presented, showing the advantages of t…
