The surface of a topological insulator hosts Dirac electronic states with the spin-momentum locking, which constrains spin orientation perpendicular to electron momentum. As a result, collective plasma excitations in the interacting Dirac liquid manifest themselves as coupled charge- and spin-waves. Here we demonstrate that the presence of the spin component enables effective coupling between plasma waves and spin waves at interfaces between the surface of a topological insulator and insulating magnet. Moreover, the helical nature of spin-momentum locking textures provides the phase winding in the coupling between the spin and plasma waves that makes the spectrum of hybridized spin-plasma modes to be topologically nontrivial. We also show that such topological modes lead to a large thermal Hall response.
Nontrivial topology in bulk matter has been linked with the existence of topologically protected interfacial states. We show that a gaseous plasmon polariton (GPP), an electromagnetic surface wave existing at the boundary of magnetized plasma and vacuum, has a topological origin that arises from the nontrivial topology of magnetized plasma. Because a gaseous plasma cannot sustain a sharp interface with discontinuous density, one must consider a gradual density falloff with scale length comparable or longer than the wavelength of the wave. We show that the GPP may be found within a gapped spect…
We exploit the influence of the Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes on the electron spin relaxation in a (110)-GaAs quantum well to unveil excitonic signatures within the many particle electron-hole system. The temperature dependent time- and polarization-resolved photoluminescence measurements span five decades of carrier density, comprise the transition from localized excitons over quasi free excitons to an electron-hole plasma, and reveal strong excitonic signatures even at relatively high densities and temperatures.
The weak spin-orbit interaction in graphene was predicted to be increased, e.g., by hydrogenation. This should result in a sizable spin Hall effect (SHE). We employ two different methods to examine the spin Hall effect in weakly hydrogenated graphene. For hydrogenation we expose graphene to a hydrogen plasma and use Raman spectroscopy to characterize this method. We then investigate the SHE of hydrogenated graphene in the H-bar method and by direct measurements of the inverse SHE. Although a large nonlocal resistance can be observed in the H-bar structure, comparison with the results of the ot…
We study spintronics and spincaloritronics in topological insulators. We show spintronics effects in 2D topological insulator junctions and 3D topological insulators coupled to ferromagnets. We also investigate spin polarization on the surface of a topological insulator induced by a circularly polarized light and refraction at the junction between two topological insulators. As for spincaloritronics effects, we show transverse magnetic heat transport and thermoelectric transport in topological insulators. Finite-size effect in topological insulators and band structure engineering of interface …
Artificial spin ices (ASIs) are interacting arrays of lithographically-defined nanomagnets in which novel frustrated magnetic phases can be intentionally designed. A key emergent description of fundamental excitations in ASIs is that of magnetic monopoles -- mobile quasiparticles that carry an effective magnetic charge. Here we demonstrate that the archetypal square ASI lattice can host, in specific regions of its magnetic phase diagram, high-density plasma-like regimes of mobile magnetic monopoles. By passively "listening" to spontaneous monopole noise in thermal equilibrium, we reveal their …
Topological insulators (TIs) represent a novel quantum state of matter, characterized by edge or surface-states, showing up on the topological character of the bulk wave functions. Allowing electrons to move along their surface, but not through their inside, they emerged as an intriguing material platform for the exploration of exotic physical phenomena, somehow resembling the graphene Dirac-cone physics, as well as for exciting applications in optoelectronics, spintronics, nanoscience, low-power electronics, and quantum computing. Investigation of topological surface states (TSS) is conventio…
We found, through extensive study of micro reflectance difference spectroscopy images of Bi2Te3 topological insulator surface, the first clear experimental evidence that there is non-uniform spatial distribution of spin polarization (spin domains) in the surface of the topological insulator. These spin domains involve when they are at different temperatures, in an external magnetic field, and can be driven by electric current. Such surface spin domains in topological insulators have never been predicted by any theory so far.
Spin evolution opened a large field in quantum plasma research. The spin waves in plasmas were considered among new phenomena considered in spin-1/2 quantum plasmas. The spin density evolution equation found by means of the many-particle quantum hydrodynamics shows existence of the "thermal" part of the spin current, which is an analog of the thermal pressure, or the Fermi pressure for degenerate electron gas, existing in the Euler equation. However, this term has been dropped, since there has not been found any equation of state for the thermal part of the spin current (TPSC), like we have fo…
We study dynamics of tunnel Josephson junctions with a thin ferromagnetic layer F [superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) junctions]. On the basis of derived equations relating the superconducting phase and magnetic moment to each other we analyze collective excitations in the system and find a new mode which is a hybrid of plasmalike and spin waves. The latter are coupled together in a broad range of parameters characterizing the system. Using the solution describing the collective modes we demonstrate that besides the Fiske steps new peaks appear on the I-V characteristic…
We theoretically discuss the possibility of realizing the negative refractive index in Weyl/Dirac semimetals. We consider the Maxwell equations with the plasma gap and the chiral magnetic effect. We study the dispersion relations of electromagnetic waves, and show that the refractive index becomes negative at frequencies (just) below the plasma frequency. We find that axial anomaly, or more specifically, negative magnetoresistance (electric current parallel to magnetic fields) opens a new route to realize the negative refractive index. Reflection and transmission coefficients are computed in a…
For generic time-reversal invariant systems with spin-orbit couplings, we clarify a close relationship between the Z$_2$ topological order and the spin Chern number proposed by Kane and Mele and by Sheng {\it et al.}, respectively, in the quantum spin Hall effect. It turns out that a global gauge transformation connects different spin Chern numbers (even integers) modulo 4, which implies that the spin Chern number and the Z$_2$ topological order yield the same classification. We present a method of computing spin Chern numbers and demonstrate it in single and double plane of graphene.
Improving luminescent intensity is a significant technical requirement and scientific problem for the luminescent performance of fluorophor materials through the ages. The process control and luminescence performance still limit the developments of luminescent intensity even through it can be improved partly by covering or magnetron sputtering of precious metals on the surface of the fluorophore materials. On the basis of the improvement of luminescence center radiative transition rate by surface plasma resonance and Y2O3:Eu3+ microsheet phosphors, a fundamental model for topological luminopho…
We have investigated the one-way surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) at the interface of a continuous magneto-plasma material and metal. We demonstrated that TM modes inside a continuous material can be assigned non-trivial Chern numbers analogous to those of topological photonic crystals; moreover these Chern numbers can be calculated analytically. This leads to the appearance of topologically protected surface modes propagating at frequencies inside the bandgap of the magneto-plasma. Previous works considered 2D structures; here we consider the effects of 3D defects, and show that, although back…
Classification of matter through topological phases and topological edge states between distinct materials has been a subject of great interest recently. While lattices have been the main setting for these studies, a relatively unexplored realm for this physics is that of continuum fluids. In the typical case of a fluid model with a point spectrum, nontrivial topology and associated edge modes have been observed previously. However, another possibility is that a continuous spectrum can coexist with the point spectrum. Here we demonstrate that a fluid plasma model can harbor nontrivial topology…
Since longitudinal spin-spin interaction is ubiquitous in magnetic materials, it is very interesting to explore the interplay between topology and longitudinal spin-spin interaction. Here, we examine the role of longitudinal spin-spin interaction on topological magnon excitations. Remarkably, even for single-magnon excitations, we discover topological edge states and defect edge states of magnon excitations in a dimerized Heisenberg XXZ chain and their topological properties can be distinguished via adiabatic quantum transport. We uncover topological phase transitions induced by longitudinal s…
Gapless surface states on topological insulators are protected from elastic scattering on non-magnetic impurities which makes them promising candidates for low-power electronic applications. However, for wide-spread applications, these states should remain coherent and significantly spin polarized at ambient temperatures. Here, we studied the coherence and spin-structure of the topological states on the surface of a model topological insulator, Bi2Se3, at elevated temperatures in spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found an extremely weak broadening and essentially no decay …
The superposition of flexoelectronic doping and topological phonons give rise to topological electronic magnetism of phonon in an inhomogeneously strained Si in the bilayer structure with metal. In case of ferromagnetic metal and Si bilayer structure, the flexoelectronic doping will also give rise to larger spin current, which will lead to large spin to charge conversion due to topological electronic magnetism of phonon. By applying a temperature difference to ferromagnetic metal/Si bilayer structure under an applied strain gradient, a large thermoelectric response can be generated. In this ex…
We evidence the possibility for coherent electrical manipulation of the spin orientation of topologically protected edge states in a low-symmetry quantum spin Hall insulator. By using a combination of ab-initio simulations, symmetry-based modeling, and large-scale calculations of the spin Hall conductivity, it is shown that small electric fields can efficiently vary the spin textures of edge currents in monolayer 1T'-WTe2 by up to a 90-degree spin rotation, without jeopardizing their topological character. These findings suggest a new kind of gate-controllable spin-based device, topologically …
Inspired by Laughlin's theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect, we explore the topological nature of the quark-gluon plasma and the nucleons in the context of the Clifford algebra. In our model, each quark is transformed into a composite particle via the simultaneous attachment of a spin monopole and an isospin monopole. This is induced by a novel kind of meson endowed with both spin and isospin degrees of freedom. The interactions in the strongly coupled quark-gluon system are governed by the topological winding number of the monopoles, which is an odd integer to ensure that the overall …
We investigate a hybrid quantum system involving spin qubits, based on the spins of electrons confined in quantum dots, and topological qubits, based on Majorana fermions. In such a system, gated control of the charge on the quantum dots allows transfer of quantum information between the spin and topological qubits, and the topological system can be used to facilitate transfer of spin qubits between spatially separated quantum dots and to initialize entangled spin-qubit pairs. Here, we show that the coupling to the topological system also makes it possible to perform entangling two-qubit gates…
A topologically ordered material is characterized by a rare quantum organization of electrons that evades the conventional spontaneously broken symmetry based classification of condensed matter. Exotic spin transport phenomena such as the dissipationless quantum spin Hall effect have been speculated to originate from a novel topological order whose identification requires a spin sensitive measurement, which does not exist to this date in any system (neither in Hg(Cd)Te quantum wells nor in the topological insulator BiSb). Using Mott polarimetry, we probe the spin degrees of freedom of these qu…
The surface of a 3D topological insulator is a new type of two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The exactly quantized magneto-optical or axionic response of a 3D topological insulator is a direct result of the Berry's phase protected spin-momentum locked states on its surface.
