When the next galactic core-collapse supernova occurs, we must be ready to obtain as much information as possible. Although many present and future detectors are well equipped to detect $\overlineν_{\mathrm{e}}$ and $ν_x$ neutrinos, the detection of the $ν_{\mathrm{e}}$ species presents the biggest challenges. We assess the impact that a 1 ktonne lead-based detector, such as HALO-1kT, can have in constraining electron neutrino time-integrated fluxes. The study involves the detector taken alone as well as when combined with massive $\overlineν_{\mathrm{e}}$-sensitive detectors such as Super-Kamiokande and JUNO. We find that HALO-1kT alone is not able to strongly constrain the emission parameters. When combined with other detectors, however, the orthogonal information might be helpful in improving the $ν_{\mathrm{e}}$ total emitted energy and mean energy accuracy, up to about $50\%$, if no other $ν_{\mathrm{e}}$-sensitive channel is implemented. A discussion on the reconstruction of $\overlineν_{\mathrm{e}}$ and $ν_x$ species, as well as the total emitted energy, is also presented.

Measurements of the solar neutrino mass-squared difference from KamLAND and solar neutrino data are somewhat discrepant, perhaps due to nonstandard neutrino interactions in matter. We show that the zenith angle distribution of solar neutrinos at Hyper-Kamiokande and the energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos at JUNO can conclusively confirm the discrepancy and detect new neutrino interactions.
The uncertainty in the calculation of atmospheric neutrino fluxes is studied. The absolute value of atmospheric neutrino fluxes is sensitive to variation of the primary cosmic ray flux model and/or the interaction model. However, the ratios between different kind of neutrinos stay almost unchanged with these variations. It is unlikely that the anomalous ratio $(ν_μ/ν_e)_{obs}/(ν_μ/ν_e)_{MC}$ reported by Kamiokande and Super Kamiokande is caused by the uncertainty of predicted atmospheric neutrino fluxes.
The strange quark contribution to proton's spin ($Δs$) is a fundamental quantity that is poorly determined from current experiments. Neutrino-proton elastic scattering (pES) is a promising channel to measure this quantity, and requires an intense source of low-energy neutrinos and a low-threshold detector with excellent resolution. In this paper, we propose that neutrinos from a galactic supernova and their interactions with protons in large-volume scintillation detectors can be utilized to determine $Δs$. The spectra of all flavors of supernova neutrinos can be independently determined using …
A high-statistics measurement of the neutrinos from a galactic core-collapse supernova is extremely important for understanding the explosion mechanism, and studying the intrinsic properties of neutrinos themselves. In this paper, we explore the possibility to constrain the absolute scale of neutrino masses $m^{}_ν$ via the detection of galactic supernova neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) with a 20 kiloton liquid-scintillator detector. In assumption of a nearly-degenerate neutrino mass spectrum and a normal mass ordering, the upper bound on the absolute neutrino…
The advent of gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK-Gd) and of the soon-to-start JUNO liquid scintillator detector marks a substantial improvement in the global sensitivity for the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background (DSNB). The present article reviews the detector properties most relevant for the DSNB searches in both experiments and estimates the expected signal and background levels. Based on these inputs, we evaluate the sensitivity of both experiments individually and combined. Using a simplified statistical approach, we find that both SK-Gd and JUNO have the potential to reach $>$3$σ$…
It has been proposed to determine the mass hierarchy of neutrinos by exploiting the beat between the oscillation frequencies corresponding to the two neutrino mass squared differences. JUNO is based on this concept and uses a large liquid scintillator detector at a distance of 53km from a powerful nuclear reactor complex. We argue that the micro-structure present in antineutrino fluxes from nuclear reactors makes it essential to experimentally determine a reference spectrum with an energy resolution very similar to the one of JUNO.
As an attractive candidate for dark matter, the primordial black holes (PBHs) in the mass range ($10^{15} \sim 10^{16}$)$\mathrm{g}$ could be detected via their Hawking radiation, including neutrinos and antineutrinos of three flavors. In this paper, we investigate the possibility to constrain the PBH as dark matter by measuring (anti)neutrino signals at the large liquid-scintillator detector of Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). Among six available detection channels, the inverse beta decay $\overlineν^{}_e + p \to e^+ + n$ is shown to be most sensitive to the fraction $f^{}_{\…
This article describes the seven experiments Homestake, Kamiokande, SAGE, GALLEX, Super-Kamiokande, GNO and SNO which have so far provided data on the measurement of the solar neutrino fluxes. The detection mechanism, the salient features of the detectors and the results of each experiment are presented. How the solar neutrino problem has evolved and became more focused with each experimental data is summarized. The goals for the future experiments are outlined.
We present a three-dimensional calculation of atmospheric neutrino fluxes using accurate models of the geomagnetic field, hadronic interactions, tracking and decays. Results are presented for the Super-Kamiokande (SK) and Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) sites using the GEANT-FLUKA hadronic code. We make a comparison with previous one-dimensional calculations and other three-dimensional results. The recently reported geometrical enhancement of low energy, horizontal neutrinos is confirmed. The effect on observed leptons is however, restricted to a small overall increase in flux. We report ea…
The Super-Kamiokande best global fit, which includes data from SNO, Gallium and Chlorine experiments, results in a hep neutrino contribution to the signals that, even after oscillation, is greater than the SSM prediction. The solar hep neutrino flux that would yield this contribution is four times larger than the one predicted by the SSM. Recent detailed calculations exclude that the astrophysical factor S_{hep}(0) could be wrong by such a large factor. Given the reliability of the temperature and densities profiles inside the Sun, this experimental result indicates that plasma effects are imp…
While KamLAND apparently rules out Resonant-Spin-Flavor-Precession (RSFP) as an explanation of the solar neutrino deficit, the solar neutrino fluxes in the Cl and Ga experiments vary with solar rotation rates. Added to this evidence, summarized here, a power spectrum analysis of the Super-Kamiokande data reveals (99.9% CL) an oscillation in the band of twice the equatorial rotation frequencies of the solar interior. An m=2 magnetic structure and RSFP, perhaps as a subdominant process, would give this effect. Solar cycle data changes are seen, as expected for convection zone modulations.
While most searches for cosmic axions so far focused on their cold relics as (a component of) dark matter, various well-motivated cosmological sources can produce "boosted" axions that remain relativistic today. We demonstrate that existing/upcoming neutrino experiments such as Super-Kamiokande, Hyper-Kamiokande, DUNE, JUNO, and IceCube can probe such energetic axion relics. The characteristic signature is the mono-energetic single photon signal from axion absorption induced by the axion-photon coupling. This proposal offers to cover parameter ranges that are complementary to existing axion se…
If neutrino conversions within the Sun result in partial polarization of initial solar neutrino fluxes, then a new opportunity arises to observe the anti-ν_e's in future neutrino experiments in the low energy region (such as BOREXINO or HELLAZ) and thus to probe the Majorana nature of the neutrinos. The ν_e -> anti-ν_e conversions may take place for low energy solar neutrinos while being unobservable at the Kamiokande and Super-Kamiokande experiments.
We analyze fluctuations of the solar neutrino flux using data from the Homestake, GALLEX, GNO, SAGE and Super Kamiokande experiments. Spectral analysis and direct quantitative estimations show that the most stable variation of the solar neutrino flux is a quasi-five-year periodicity. The revised values of the mean solar neutrino flux are presented in Table 4. They were used to estimate the observed pp-flux of the solar electron neutrinos near the Earth. We consider two alternative explanations for the origin of a variable component of the solar neutrino deficit.
The detection of the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) will preciously contribute to gauge the properties of the core-collapse supernova population. We estimate the DSNB event rate in the next-generation neutrino detectors, Hyper-Kamiokande enriched with Gadolinium, JUNO, and DUNE. The determination of the supernova unknowns through the DSNB will be heavily driven by Hyper-Kamiokande, given its higher expected event rate, and complemented by DUNE that will help in reducing the parameters uncertainties. Meanwhile, JUNO will be sensitive to the DSNB signal over the largest energy rang…
The atmospheric neutrino beam simultaneously spans a range of pathlengths from ten to ten thousand kilometers, which correspond respectively to downward- and upward-going neutrinos. As with any neutrino oscillation experiment, also in this case the interpretation of the data depends on a detailed knowledge of the neutrino beam. The ingredients are the primary spectrum of cosmic-ray nucleons, the geomagnetic fields in which the charged particles propagate and the properties of interactions of hadrons in the atmosphere. In this talk I review the status of calculations in light of the recent evid…
We revisit the possibility that neutrinos undergo non-radiative decay. We investigate the potential to extract information on the neutrino lifetime-to-mass ratio from the diffuse supernova neutrino background. To this aim, we explicitly consider the current uncertainties on the core-collapse supernova rate and the fraction of failed supernovae. We present predictions in a full 3 neutrino framework in the absence and presence of neutrino non-radiative decay, for the Super-Kamiokande+Gd, the JUNO, the Hyper-Kamiokande, and the DUNE experiments, that should observe the diffuse supernova neutrino …
Leptonic CP violation is one of the most important topics in neutrino physics. CP violation in the neutrino sector is strongly related to the nature of neutrinos: whether they are Dirac or Majorana particles. In \cite{Popov:2021icg} we have shown that for Majorana neutrinos arance of nonzero Majorana CP-violating phases combined with strong magnetic field during supernova core-collaple can induce new resonances in neutrino oscillations, for example in $ν_e \to \barν_τ$ channel. In this contribution we further study new resonances in Majorana neutrino oscillations, in particular energy dependen…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) formed in the early Universe are sources of neutrinos emitted via Hawking radiation. Such astrophysical neutrinos could be detected at Earth and constraints on the abundance of comet-mass PBHs could be derived from the null observation of this neutrino flux. Here, we consider non-rotating PBHs and improve constraints using Super-Kamiokande neutrino data, as well as we perform forecasts for next-generation neutrino (Hyper-Kamiokande, JUNO, DUNE) and dark matter (DARWIN, ARGO) detectors, which we compare. For PBHs less massive than $\sim \textrm{few} \times 10^{14}$…

The excess of cosmic-ray electron and positron fluxes measured by the PAMELA satellite and ATIC balloon experiments may be interpreted as the signals of the dark matter annihilation or decay into leptons. In this letter we show that the dark matter annihilation/decay which reproduces the electron/positron excess may yield a significant amount of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic center. In the case, future kilometer-square size experiments may confirm such a scenario, or even the Super-Kamiokande results already put constraints on some dark matter models.
The recent results of the EDGES collaboration indicate that during the era of reionization, the primordial gas was much colder than expected. The cooling of the gas could be explained by interactions between dark matter (DM) and particles in the primordial gas. Constraints from cosmology and particle experiments indicate that this DM should be light ($\sim$10-80 MeV), carry a small charge ($ε\sim 10^{-6}$-$10^{-4}$), and only make up a small fraction of the total amount of DM. Several constraints on the DM parameter space have already been made. We explore the yet unconstrained region in the c…
The minimal standard electroweak model can be tested by allowing all the solar neutrino fluxes, with undistorted energy spectra, to be free parameters in fitting the measured solar neutrino event rates, subject only to the condition that the total observed luminosity of the sun is produced by nuclear fusion. The rates of the five experiments prior to SNO (chlorine, Kamiokande, SAGE, GALLEX, Super-Kamiokande) cannot be fit by an arbitrary choice of undistorted neutrino fluxes at the level of 2.5 sigma (formally 99% C.L.). Considering just SNO and Super-Kamiokande, the discrepancy is at the 3.3 …

We investigate effects of non-zero Dirac and Majorana CP violating phases on neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in a magnetic field of astrophysical environments. It is shown that in the presence of strong magnetic fields and dense matter, non-zero CP phases can induce new resonances in the oscillations channels $ν_e \leftrightarrow \barν_e$, $ν_e \leftrightarrow \barν_μ$ and $ν_e \leftrightarrow \barν_τ$. We also consider all other possible oscillation channels with $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ in the initial state. The resonances can potentially lead to significant phenomena in neutrino oscillations acce…
We explore the singlet scalar dark matter (DM) from direct detections and high energy neutrino signals generated by the solar DM annihilation. Two singlet scalar DM models are discussed, one is the real singlet scalar DM model as the simple extension of the standard model (SSDM-SM) with a discrete Z_2 symmetry, and another is the complex singlet scalar DM model as the simple extension of the left-right symmetric two Higgs bidoublet model (SSDM-2HBDM) with $P$ and CP symmetries. To derive the Sun capture rate, we consider the uncertainties in the hadronic matrix elements and calculate the spin-…
Supernovae are rare nearby, but they are not rare in the Universe, and all past core-collapse supernovae contributed to the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background (DSNB), for which the near-term detection prospects are very good. The Super-Kamiokande limit on the DSNB electron {\it antineutrino} flux, $ϕ(E_ν> 19.3 {\rm MeV}) < 1.2$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, is just above the range of recent theoretical predictions based on the measured star formation rate history. We show that the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory should be able to test the corresponding DSNB electron {\it neutrino} flux with a sensitivit…
This is the first of two articles aimed at providing comprehensive predictions for the day-night (D-N) effect for the Super-Kamiokande detector in the case of the MSW $ν_e \to \numt$ transition solution of the solar neutrino problem. The one-year averaged probability of survival of the solar $\nue$ crossing the Earth mantle, the core, the inner 2/3 of the core, and the (core + mantle) is calculated with high precision (better than 1%) using the elliptical orbit approximation (EOA) to describe the Earth motion around the Sun. Results for the survival probability in the indicated cases are obtai…
Using the results of a high precision calculation of the solar neutrino survival probability for Earth crossing neutrinos in the case of MSW $ν_e \to ν_{μ(τ)}$ transition solution of the solar neutrino problem, performed in an earlier study, we derive predictions for the one-year averaged day-night (D-N) asymmetry in the deformations of the $e^-$ - spectrum to be measured with the Super - Kamiokande detector, and for the D-N asymmetry in the energy- integrated one year signal in this detector. The asymmetries are calculated for solar $ν_e$ crossing the Earth mantle only, the core and the (mant…
We consider the sensitivity of future neutrino experiments in the low energy region, such as BOREXINO or HELLAZ, to a solar electron antineutrino signal. We show that, if neutrino conversions within the Sun result in partial polarization of initial solar neutrino fluxes, then a new opportunity arises to observe the electron antineutrinos and thus to probe the Majorana nature of the neutrinos. This is achieved by comparing the slopes of the energy dependence of the differential neutrino electron scattering cross section for different neutrino conversion scenarios. We also show how the ν_e -> \b…
Non-standard neutrino interactions with a massive boson can produce the bosons in the core of core-collapse supernovae (SNe). After the emission of the bosons from the SN core, their subsequent decays into neutrinos can modify the SN neutrino flux. We show future observations of neutrinos from a next galactic SN in Super-Kamiokande (SK) and Hyper-Kamiokande (HK) can probe flavor-universal non-standard neutrino couplings to a light boson, improving the previous limit from the SN 1987A neutrino burst by several orders of magnitude. We also discuss sensitivity of the flavor-universal non-standard…
When a supernova explosion occurs in neighbors around hundreds pc, current and future neutrino detectors are expected to observe neutrinos from the presupernova star before the explosion. We show a possibility for obtaining the evidence for burning processes in the central region of presupernova stars though the observations of neutrino signals by current and future neutrino detectors such as KamLAND, JUNO, and Hyper-Kamiokande. We also investigate supernova alarms using neutrinos from presupernova stars in neighbors. If a supernova explodes at ~ 200 pc, future 20 kton size liquid scintillatio…
For nearly a century, studying cosmic-ray air showers has driven progress in our understanding of elementary particle physics. In this work, we revisit the production of millicharged particles in these atmospheric showers and provide new constraints for XENON1T and Super-Kamiokande and new sensitivity estimates of current and future detectors, such as JUNO. We discuss distinct search strategies, specifically studies of single-energy-deposition events, where one electron in the detector receives a relatively large energy transfer, as well as multiple-scattering events consisting of (at least) t…
We discuss the possibility of reconstructing the newly formed proto-neutron star radius from the late time neutrino signal. A black-body emission is assumed for the neutron star cooling phase. We parametrize the neutrino time-integrated fluxes based on simulations of Roberts and Reddy. A likelihood analysis of the inverse-beta decay and elastic scattering events in Hyper-Kamiokande is performed in both three flavor and an effective one flavor scenario. We show that the precision achievable in the radius reconstruction strongly depends on a correlation with the pinching parameter and therefore …

Core collapse of massive stars leads to different fates for various physical factors, which gives different spectra of the emitted neutrinos. We focus on the supernova relic neutrinos (SRNs) as a probe to investigate the stellar collapse fate. We present the SRN fluxes and event rate spectra at a detector for three resultant states after stellar core collapse, the typical mass neutron star, the higher mass neutron star, or the failed supernova forming a black hole, based on different nuclear equations of state. Then possible SRN fluxes are formed as mixtures of the three components. We also sh…
Future neutrino detectors will obtain high-statistics data from a nearby core-collapse supernova. We study the mixing with eV-mass sterile neutrinos in a supernova environment and its effects on the active neutrino fluxes as detected by Hyper-Kamiokande and IceCube. Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis, we make projections for how accurately these experiments will measure the active-sterile mixing angle $θ_s$ given that there are substantial uncertainties on the expected luminosity and spectrum of active neutrinos from a galactic supernova burst. We find that Hyper-Kamiokande can reconstr…
Although Galactic core-collapse supernovae (SNe) only happen a few times per century, every hour a vast number of explosions happen in the whole universe, emitting energy in the form of neutrinos, resulting in the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). The DSNB has not yet been detected, but Super-Kamiokande doped with gadolinium is expected to yield the first statistically significant observation within the next several years. Since the neutrinos produced at the core collapse undergo mixing during their propagation to Earth, the flavor content at detection is a test of oscillation phys…
We study several methods for timing the neutrino signal of a Galactic supernova (SN) for different detectors via Monte Carlo simulations. We find that, for the methods we studied, at a distance of $10\,$kpc both Hyper-Kamiokande and IceCube can reach precisions of $\sim1\,$ms for the neutrino burst, while a potential IceCube Gen2 upgrade will reach submillisecond precision. In the case of a failed SN, we find that detectors such as SK and JUNO can reach precisions of $\sim0.1\,$ms while HK could potentially reach a resolution of $\sim 0.01\,$ms so that the impact of the black hole formation pr…
