Photon-pair generation must satisfy both the energy conservation and phase-matching conditions with a specific pump wavelength and dispersion of nonlinear optical medium, but finding a photon-pair, which has a desired specific wavelength, generation medium is challenging. Here, we present a method to create photon pairs that functions efficiently even the pump wavelength is much larger than the zero GVD wavelength of medium. In this study, we employ short SMF-28 fibers having ~1310 nm zero GVD wavelength and C-band pump (1552.52 nm) to generate C-band photon pairs. The measured pair generation rate and coincidence-to-accidental ratios are comparable to those from a long dispersion-shifted fiber. Polarization-entangled states are prepared, and an S value of 2.659 +- 0.094 is achieved from Bell inequality measurements. Our results indicate that the use of a short SFWM medium yields adequate photon-pair generation rates regardless of its dispersion properties in almost any material at any pump wavelength.
Propagation of broadband photon pairs over deployed telecommunication fibers is used to achieve nonlocal dispersion compensation without the deliberate introduction of negative dispersion. This is made possible by exploiting time-energy entanglement and the positive and negative dispersive properties of the fiber. We demonstrate preservation of photon timing correlations after transmission over two multi-segment 10km spans of deployed fiber and up to 80km of laboratory-based fiber.
We report on the experimental characterization of a novel nonlinear liquid-filled hollow-core photonic-crystal fiber for the generation of photon pairs at telecommunication wavelength through spontaneous four-wave-mixing. We show that the optimization procedure in view of this application links the choice of the nonlinear liquid to the design parameters of the fiber, and we give an example of such an optimization at telecom wavelengths. Combining the modeling of the fiber and classical characterization techniques at these wavelengths, we identify, for the chosen fiber and liquid combination, s…
We report a bright and tunable source of spectrally pure heralded single photons in the telecom O-Band, based on cross-polarized four wave mixing in a commercial birefringent optical fiber. The source can achieve a purity of 85%, heralding efficiency of 30% and high coincidences to accidentals ratio of 108. Furthermore, the possibility of building multiple identical sources is explored. Through the measurements of joint spectral intensities, we find that the fiber is homogeneous over atleast 45 centimeters and can potentially realize 4 identical sources. This paves the way for a cost-effective…
We experimentally characterize photon leakage from 112Gbps data channels in both non-trench and trench-assistant 7-core fibers, demonstrating telecom compatibility for QKD co-existing with high-speed data transmission when a proper core/wavelength allocation is carried out.

Motivated by the pursuit of a simple system to produce non-classical light sources for long- distance quantum communication, we generate for the first time an all-fiber source of pulsed twin beams in 1550 nm band by using a high gain fiber optical parametric amplifier. The noise of intensity difference of the twin beams is below the shot noise limit by 3.1 dB (10.4 dB after correction for losses). A detailed study reveals a number of limiting factors for higher noise reduction. Therefore, further noise reduction will be feasible once care is taken for these limiting factors.
Noiseless optical components are critical for applications ranging from metrology to quantum communication. Here we characterize several commercial telecom C-band fiber components for parasitic noise using a tunable laser. We observe the spectral signature of trace concentrations of erbium in all devices from the underlying optical crystals including YVO4, LiNbO3, TeO2 and AMTIR glass. Due to the long erbium lifetime, these signals are challenging to mitigate at the single photon level in the telecom range, and suggests the need for higher purity optical crystals.
We demonstrate the distribution of polarization entangled photons of wavelength 810 nm through standard telecom fibers. This technique allows quantum communication protocols to be performed over established fiber infrastructure, and makes use of the smaller and better performing setups available around 800 nm, as compared to those which use telecom wavelengths around 1550 nm. We examine the excitation and subsequent quenching of higher-order spatial modes in telecom fibers up to 6 km in length, and perform a distribution of high quality entanglement (visibility 95.6%). Finally, we demonstrate …
We demonstrate the distribution of polarization-entangled photons for the purpose of quantum key distribution (QKD) along active telecom fibers. Entangled photon pairs of 810 nm wavelength generated by a Sagnac interferometer source were coupled into standard telecom single mode fibers. The fibers were either dark or carrying a standardized 1550 nm ethernet signals (1000BASE-ZX) with a nominal speed of 1 GBps from regular media converter devices, without any requirements on the optical power or spectrum transmitted. Our system demonstrates a QKD network covering 6 km in distance with a central…
We demonstrate the multiplexing of a classical coherent and a quantum state of light in a single telecommunciation fiber. For this purpose we make use of spontaneous parametric down conversion and quantum frequency conversion to generate photon pairs at 854 nm and the telecom O-band. The herald photon triggers a telecom C-band laser pulse. The telecom single photon and the laser pulse are combined and coupled to a standard telecom fiber. Low background time correlation of the classical and quantum signal behind the fiber shows successful telecommunication channel multiplexing.
We experimentally demonstrate the compatibility of wavelength multiplexed active polarization stabilization for quantum communication in an optical fiber carrying telecom traffic. One of the feedback control channels contains a 9.953 Gb/s data stream generated from a BER meter. We verify the ability to transmit single-photons in the two opposite directions of a 23 km optical fiber spool, while maintaining their state of polarization stable and a classical BER in the feedback channel error-free, during 6 hours of continuous operation.
Entanglement distribution over long distances is essential for many quantum communication schemes like quantum teleportation, some variants of quantum key distribution, or implementations of a quantum internet. Distributing entanglement through standard telecommunication fiber is particularly important for quantum key distribution protocols with low vulnerability over metropolitan distances. However, entanglement distribution over long distance through optical fiber so far could only be accomplished with moderate photon pair rates. In this work, we present entanglement distribution over 50km o…
We describe a compact and versatile multi-frequency laser system for laser-cooling potassium atoms, by frequency doubling a fiber-optic telecom beam ($\simeq 1534$ or $1540$~nm). Low-power fiber-based telecom lasers and components generate a single beam containing the cooling and repumper half frequencies, subsequently amplified by high-power amplifier. A final free-space SHG stage generates a single beam with typically 2.5 W at quasi-resonant frequencies ($\simeq 767$ or $770$~nm) with high-quality mode and ready for laser cooling. This allowed to trap up to $4\times10^9$ $^{41}$K atoms with …
Photon-based quantum information processing promises new technologies including optical quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and distributed quantum networks. Polarization-encoded photons at telecommunication wavelengths provide a compelling platform for practical realization of these technologies. However, despite important success towards building elementary components compatible with this platform, including sources of entangled photons, efficient single photon detectors, and on-chip quantum circuits, a missing element has been atomic quantum memory that directly allows for reversible m…
We report a compact, scalable, and high-performance superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) array by using a multichannel optical fiber array-coupled configuration. For single pixels with an active area of 18 um in diameter and illuminated at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm, we achieved a pixel yield of 13/16 on one chip, an average system detection efficiency of 69% at a dark count rate of 160 cps, a minimum timing jitter of 74 ps, and a maximum count rate of ~40 Mcps. The optical crosstalk coefficient between adjacent channels is better than -60 dB. The performance of the f…
We report a demonstration of quantum key distribution (QKD) over a standard telecom fiber exceeding 50 dB in loss and 250 km in length. The differential phase shift QKD protocol was chosen and implemented with 2 GHz system clock rate. By careful optimization of the 1-bit delayed Faraday-Michelson interferometer and the use of the super-conducting single photon detector (SSPD), we achieved a quantum bit error rate below 2% when the fiber length was no more than 205 km, and of 3.45% for the 260 km length fiber with 52.9 dB loss. We also improved the quantum efficiency of SSPD to obtain high key …
For practical quantum communications, the efficiency of the entire system (source, quantum channel and detectors) must be taken into account. In many urban environments, the quantum channel in the form of telecommunication optical fiber (confirming to ITU G.652D standards) are available, but the detectors in this range typically have low efficiency. We investigate the possibility that for campus-type communications, entangled photons prepared in the Near-Infrared Range (NIR) can be transmitted successfully while preserving polarization entanglement. We demonstrate the distribution of degenerat…
Hyperentanglement, the simultaneous and independent entanglement of quantum particles in multiple degrees of freedom, is a powerful resource that can be harnessed for efficient quantum information processing. In photonic systems, the two degrees of freedom (DoF) often used to carry quantum and classical information are polarization and frequency, thanks to their robustness in transmission, both in free space and in optical fibers. Telecom-band hyperentangled photons generated in optical fibers are of particular interest because they are compatible with existing fiber-optic infrastructure, and …

The system is compact, portable with a fully automated start-up and stabilisation modules for polarisation, synchronisation and photon coupling allow a hands-off operation. Stable and reliable key exchange in a deployed optical fiber of 16km length was demonstrated. In this fiber network we achieved over two weeks an automatic key generation with an average key rate of 2000 bit/s withou…
The development of efficient sources of single photons and entangled photon pairs emitting in the low-loss wavelength region around 1550 nm is crucial for long-distance quantum communication. Moreover, direct fiber coupling and electrical carrier injection are highly desirable for deployment in compact and user-friendly systems integrated with the existing fiber infrastructure. Here we present a detailed design study of circular Bragg gratings etched in InP slabs and operating in the telecom C-band. In this letter, we report a polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on type-II spontaneous parametric down conversion at telecom O-band in periodically poled silica fiber (PPSF). The photon-pair source exhibits more than 130 nm (~24 THz) emission bandwidth centered at 1306.6 nm. The broad emission spectrum results in a short biphoton correlation time and we experimentally demonstrate a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference dip with a full width of 26.6 fs at half maximum. Owing to the low birefringence of the PPSF, the biphotons generated from type-II SPDC are polarization-entangled over the ent…
In this paper we analyze the impact of the spontaneous Raman scattered noise generated from multiple optical classical channels on a single quantum key distribution channel, all within the telecom C-band. We experimentally measure the noise generated from up to 14 continuous lasers with different wavelengths using the dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) standard, in both propagation directions in respect to the QKD channel, over different standard SMF-28 fiber lengths. We then simulate the expected secure key generation rate for a decoy-states-based system as a function of distance u…
A demonstration of the principles of quantum key distribution is performed using a single-photon source in a proof of concept test-bed over a distance of 2 km in standard telecommunications optical fiber. The single-photon source was an optically-pumped quantum dot in a microcavity emitting at a wavelength of 895 nm. Characterization of the quantum key distribution parameters was performed at a range of different optical excitation powers. An investigation of the effect of varying the optical excitation power of the quantum dot microcavity on the quantum bit error rate and cryptographic key ex…
We present a highly stable light source at telecom wavelengths, based on a short erbium doped fiber. The high stability arises from the high inversion of the Er3+ion population. This source is developed to work as a stable reference in radiometric applications and is useful in any application where high stability and/or a large bandwidth are necessary. The achieved long-term stability is 10 ppm.
On-demand sources of entangled photons for the transmission of quantum information in the telecom C-band are required to realize fiber-based quantum networks. So far, non-deterministic sources of quantum states of light were used for long distance entanglement distribution in this lowest loss wavelength range. However, they are fundamentally limited in either efficiency or security due to their Poissonian emission statistics. Here, we show on-demand generation of entangled photon pairs in the telecom C-band by an InAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dot. Using a robust phonon-assisted excitation sc…
Photon pair sources are fundamental building blocks for quantum entanglement and quantum communication. Recent studies in silicon photonics have documented promising characteristics for photon pair sources within the telecommunications band, including sub-milliwatt optical pump power, high spectral brightness, and high photon purity. However, most quantum systems suitable for local operations, such as storage and computation, support optical transitions in the visible or short near-infrared bands. In comparison to telecommunications wavelengths, the significantly higher optical attenuation in …
Raman-scattering noise in silica has been the key obstacle toward the realisation of high quality fiber-based photon-pair sources. Here, we experimentally demonstrate how to get past this limitation by dispersion tailoring a xenon-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. The source operates at room temperature, and is designed to generate Raman-free photon-pairs at useful wavelength ranges, with idler at the telecom, and signal at a visible range. We achieve a coincidence-to-accidentals ratio (2) as high as 2740 combined with an ultra low heralded g H (0) = 0.002, indicating a very high sign…
Quantum repeaters promise to enable quantum networks over global distances by circumventing the exponential decrease in success probability inherent in direct photon transmission. We propose a realistic, functionally integrated quantum repeater implementation based on single atoms in optical cavities. Entanglement is directly generated between the single-atom quantum memory and a photon at telecom wavelength. The latter is collected with high efficiency and adjustable temporal and spectral properties into a spatially well-defined cavity mode. It is heralded by a near-infrared photon emitted fr…
