Decoherence remains one of the most serious challenges to the implementation of quantum technology. It appears as a result of the transformation over time of a quantum superposition state into a classical mixture due to the quantum system interacting with the environment. Since quantum systems are never completely isolated from their environment, decoherence therefore cannot be avoided in realistic situations. Decoherence has been extensively studied, mostly theoretically, because it has many important implications in quantum technology, such as in the fields of quantum information processing, quantum communication and quantum computation. Here we report a novel experimental scheme on the study of decoherence of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state via its second harmonic generation signal. Our scheme can directly extract the decoherence of the phase-sensitive quantum correlation $\langle \hat{a}\hat{b}\rangle$ between two entangled modes $a$ and $b$. Such a correlation is the most important characteristic of a two-mode squeezed state. More importantly, this is an experimental study on the decoherence effect of a squeezed vacuum state, which has been rarely investigated.
A quantum theory of 3D X-shaped optical bullets in Kerr media is presented. The existence of progressive undistorted squeezed vacuum is predicted. Applications to quantum non-demolition experiments, entanglement and interferometers for gravitational waves detection are envisaged.
Conditions to generate high-purity entangled vacuum-evacuated coherent states ($|0>|α>^0 - |-α>^0 |0>$ were studied for two cascade-placed beam splitters, with one squeezed state input and two coherent state inputs whenever a single photon is detected. Controlling the amplitudes and the phases of the beams allows for various amplitudes of the vacuum-evacuated coherent states ($|α>^ 0 = |α> -e^{-|α|^2} |0> $) up to $α= 2.160$ to be manipulated with high-purity.
Quantum frequency conversion, the process of shifting the frequency of an optical quantum state while preserving quantum coherence, can be used to produce non-classical light at otherwise unapproachable wavelengths. We present experimental results based on highly efficient sum-frequency generation (SFG) between a vacuum squeezed state at 1064 nm and a tunable pump source at 850 nm $\pm$ 50 nm for the generation of bright squeezed light at 472~nm $\pm$ 4~nm, currently limited by the phase-matching of the used nonlinear crystal. We demonstrate that the SFG process conserves part of the quantum c…
Multipartite entanglement is a key resource for various quantum information tasks. Here, we present a scheme for generating genuine tripartite entanglement via nonlinear optical processes. We derive, in the Fock basis, the corresponding output state which we termed the coupled three-mode squeezed vacuum. We find unintuitive behaviors arise in intensity squeezing between two of the three output modes due to the coupling present. We also show that this state can be genuinely tripartite entangled.
We propose a method for tailoring the frequency spectrum of bright squeezed vacuum by generating it in a nonlinear interferometer, consisting of two down-converting nonlinear crystals separated by a dispersive medium. Due to a faster dispersive spreading of higher-order Schmidt modes, the spectral width of the radiation at the output is reduced as the length of the dispersive medium is increased. Preliminary results show 30\% spectral narrowing.
We report a novel source of twin beams based on modulational instability in high-pressure argon-filled hollow-core kagomé-style photonic-crystal fibre. The source is Raman-free and manifests strong photon-number correlations for femtosecond pulses of squeezed vacuum with a record brightness of ~2500 photons per mode. The ultra-broadband (~50 THz) twin beams are frequency tunable and contain one spatial and less than 5 frequency modes.
Entangled coherent states are shown to emerge, with high fidelity, when mixing coherent and squeezed vacuum states of light on a beam-splitter. These maximally entangled states, where photons bunch at the exit of a beamsplitter, are measured experimentally by Fock-state projections. Entanglement is examined theoretically using a Bell-type nonlocality test and compared with ideal entangled coherent states. We experimentally show nearly perfect similarity with entangled coherent states for an optimal ratio of coherent and squeezed vacuum light. In our scheme, entangled coherent states are genera…
We report the experimental generation of squeezed light at 852 nm, locked on the Cesium D2 line. 50% of noise reduction down to 50 kHz has been obtained with a doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold, using a periodically-polled KTP crystal. This light is directly utilizable with Cesium atomic ensembles for quantum networking applications
The numerical conditions to generate a high-fidelity Yurke-Stoler states ($|α>+ e^{i ψ} |-α>$)were found for two cascade-placed beam splitters with one squeezed state input and two coherent state inputs. Controlling the amplitude and the phases of beams, allows for various Yurke-Stoler states to be manipulated with ultra high-fidelity, and the expected theoretical fidelity is of more than 0.9999.
We consider $N$ two-level atoms in a ring cavity interacting with a broadband squeezed vacuum centered at frequency $ω_{s}$ and an input monochromatic driving field at frequency $ω$. We show that, besides the central mode (at $ø$), many other {\em sideband modes} are produced at the output, with frequencies shifted from $ω$ by multiples of $ 2(ω-ω_{s})$. Here we analyze the optical bistability of the two nearest sideband modes, one red-shifted and the other blue-shifted.
Squeezed states of light have been successfully employed in interferometric gravitational-wave detectors to reduce quantum noise, thus becoming one of the most promising options for extending the astrophysical reach of the generation of detectors currently under construction worldwide. In these advanced instruments, quantum noise will limit sensitivity over the entire detection band. Therefore, to obtain the greatest benefit from squeezing, the injected squeezed state must be filtered using a long-storage-time optical resonator, or "filter cavity", so as to realise a frequency dependent rotati…
We address the evolution of cat-like states in general Gaussian noisy channels, by considering superpositions of coherent and squeezed-coherent states coupled to an arbitrarily squeezed bath. The phase space dynamics is solved and decoherence is studied keeping track of the purity of the evolving state. The influence of the choice of the state and channel parameters on purity is discussed and optimal working regimes that minimize the decoherence rate are determined. In particular, we show that squeezing the bath to protect a non squeezed cat state against decoherence is equivalent to orthogona…
Beam alignment is an important practical aspect of the application of squeezed states of light. Misalignments in the detection of squeezed light result in a reduction of the observable squeezing level. In the case of squeezed vacuum fields that contain only very few photons, special measures must be taken in order to sense and control the alignment of the essentially dark beam. The GEO600 gravitational wave detector employs a squeezed vacuum source to improve its detection sensitivity beyond the limits set by classical quantum shot noise. Here, we present our design and implementation of an al…
Weak squeezed vacuum light, especially resonant to the atomic transition, plays an important role in quantum storage and generation of various quantum sources. However, the general homodyne detection (HD) cannot determine weak squeezing due to the low signal to noise ratio and the limited resolution of the HD system. Here we provide an alternative method based on photon statistics measurement to determine the weak squeezing of the squeezed vacuum light generated from an optical parametric oscillator working far below the threshold. The approach is established the relationship between the squee…
We demonstrated that by using a pump field with non-zero orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the polarization self-rotation squeezing process it is possible to generate a squeezed vacuum optical field with the matching OAM. We found a similar level of maximum quantum noise reduction for a first-order Laguerre-Gaussian pump beam and a regular Gaussian pump beam, even though the optimal operational conditions differed in these two cases. Also, we investigated the effect of self-defocusing on the level of the vacuum squeezing by simultaneously monitoring the minimum quantum noise level and the outp…
Strongly squeezed light at telecommunication wavelengths is the necessary resource for one-sided device-independent quantum key distribution via fibre networks. Reducing the optical pump power that is required for its generation will advance this quantum technology towards efficient out-of-laboratory operation. Here, we investigate the second-harmonic pump power requirement for parametric generation of continuous-wave squeezed vacuum states at 1550nm in a state-of-the-art doubly-resonant standing-wave PPKTP cavity setup. We use coarse adjustment of the Gouy phase via the cavity length together…
We reveal that classical light diffraction in arrays of specially modulated coupled optical waveguides can simulate the quantum process of two-mode squeezing in nonlinear media, with the waveguide mode amplitudes corresponding the signal and idler photon numbers. The whole Fock space is mapped by a set of arrays, where each array represents the states with a fixed difference between the signal and idler photon numbers. We demonstrate a critical transition from photon number growth to Bloch oscillations with periodical revivals of an arbitrary input state, associated with an increase of the eff…
We report the experimental demonstration of coherent control with high power, broadband squeezed vacuum. Although incoherent and exhibiting the statistics of a thermal noise, broadband squeezed vacuum is shown to induce certain two-photon interactions as a coherent ultrashort pulse with the same spectral bandwidth. Utilizing pulse-shaping techniques we coherently control the sum-frequency generation of broadband squeezed vacuum over a range of two orders of magnitude. Coherent control of two-photon interactions with broadband squeezed vacuum can potentially obtain spectral resolutions and exti…
We discuss the coupler system of two nonlinear oscillators excited by an external coherent field prepared in a maximally entangled state (Bell-like state). We show that as a result of the coupler interaction of the system with external broadband squeezed vacuum bath, entanglement decay dynamics can be considerably affected. Besides the phenomena of sudden entanglement death and its rebirth, a shortening (or lengthening) of the total disentanglement time τD can be observed, depending on the squeezing parameters. Moreover, on the example of one of the reborn entanglement cases it is shown that b…
Squeezed states are a primary resource for continuous-variable (CV) quantum information processing. To implement CV protocols in a scalable and robust way, it is desirable to generate and manipulate squeezed states using an integrated photonics platform. In this Letter, we demonstrate the generation of quadrature-phase squeezed states in the radio-frequency carrier sideband using a small-footprint silicon-nitride microresonator with a dual-pumped four-wave-mixing process. We record a squeezed noise level of 1.34 dB ($\pm$0.16 dB) below the photocurrent shot noise, which corresponds to 3.09 dB …
We report generation and measurement of a squeezed vacuum from a semi-monolithic Fabry-Perot optical parametric oscillator (OPO) up to 100 MHz at 1550 nm. The output coupler of the OPO is a flat surface of a nonlinear crystal with partially reflecting coating, which enables direct coupling with waveguide modules. Using the OPO, we observed 6.2dB of squeezing at 2 MHz and 3.0 dB of squeezing at 100 MHz. The OPO operates at the optimal wavelength to minimize propagation losses in silica waveguides and looks towards solving a bottleneck of downsizing these experiments: that of coupling between a …
A discrete completeness relation and a continuous one with a positive measure are found for the photon-added squeezed vacuum states. Extension to the photon-added squeezed one-photon states is considered. Photon-added coherent states on a circle are introduced. Their normalization and unity resolution relation are given.
Completely positive quantum operations are frequently discussed in the contexts of statistical mechanics and quantum information. They are customarily given by maps forming positive operator-values measures. To intuitively understand physical meanings of such abstract operations, the method of phase-space representations is examined. This method enables one to grasp the operations in terms of the classical statistical notions. As an example of physical importance, here, the phase-space representation of the completely positive quantum operation arising from the single-mode subdynamics of the t…
Laser intensity noise suppression has essential effects on preparation and characterization of the audio-frequency squeezed vacuum state of light based on a sub-threshold optical parametric oscillator (OPO).We have implemented two feedback loops by using relevant acousto-optical modulators (AOM) to stabilize the intensity of 795-nm near infrared (NIR) fundamental laser and 397.5-nm ultraviolet (UV) laser generated by cavity-enhanced frequency doubling.Typical peak-to-peak laser intensity fluctuation with a bandwidth of $\sim10$ kHz in a half hour has been improved from $\pm7.45$$\%$ to $\pm0.0…
Quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic vacuum are responsible for physical effects such as the Casimir force and the radiative decay of atoms, and set fundamental limits on the sensitivity of measurements. Entanglement between photons can produce correlations that result in a reduction of these fluctuations below the vacuum level allowing measurements that surpass the standard quantum limit in sensitivity. Here we demonstrate that the radiative decay rate of an atom that is coupled to quadrature squeezed electromagnetic vacuum can be reduced below its natural linewidth. We observe a two-f…
