In this work we report on observations with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer of the known neutron star X-ray transient XTE J1739-285. We observed the source in 2020 February and March, finding it in a highly active bursting state. Across a 20-day period, we detected 32 thermonuclear X-ray bursts, with an average burst recurrence time of $2.0^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ hr. A timing and spectral analysis of the ensemble of X-ray bursts reveals homogeneous burst properties, evidence for short-recurrence time bursts, and the detection of a 386.5 Hz burst oscillation candidate. The latter is especially notable, given that a previous study of this source claimed a 1122 Hz burst oscillation candidate. We did not find any evidence of variability near 1122 Hz, and instead find that the 386.5 Hz oscillation is the more prominent signal of the two burst oscillation candidates. Hence, we conclude it is unlikely that XTE J1739-285 has a sub-millisecond rotation period.
We present the earliest available soft X-ray observations of XTE J1810-187, the prototypical transient magnetar, obtained 75--84 days after its 2018 outburst with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). Using a series of observations covering eight days we find that its decreasing X-ray flux is well-described by either a blackbody plus power-law or a two-blackbody spectral model. The 2-10 keV flux of the source varied from (1.206+/-0.007)x10^{-10} to (1.125+/-0.004)x10^{-10} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}, a decrease of about 7% within our observations and 44% from that measured 7-14 days …

The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) has extensively monitored the August 2019 outburst of the 401 Hz millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. In this Letter, we report on the detection of a bright helium-fueled Type I X-ray burst. With a bolometric peak flux of $(2.3\pm0.1)\times 10^{-7}$ erg/cm^2/s, this was the brightest X-ray burst among all bursting sources observed with NICER to date. The burst shows a remarkable two-stage evolution in flux, emission lines at $1.0$ keV and $6.7$ keV, and burst oscillations at the known pulsar spin frequency, with $\approx4$\% fraction…
Accretion disks around neutron stars regularly undergo sudden strong irradiation by Type I X-ray bursts powered by unstable thermonuclear burning on the stellar surface. We investigate the impact on the disk during one of the first X-ray burst observations with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on the International Space Station. The burst is seen from Aql X-1 during the hard spectral state. In addition to thermal emission from the neutron star, the burst spectrum exhibits an excess of soft X-ray photons below 1 keV, where NICER's sensitivity peaks. We interpret the excess…
The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) has observed seven thermonuclear X-ray bursts from the Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) neutron star 4U 1728-34 from the start of the mission's operations until February of 2019. Three of these bursts show oscillations in their decaying tail with frequencies that are within 1 Hz of the previously detected burst oscillations from this source. Two of these burst oscillations have unusual properties: They have large fractional rms amplitudes of $ 48 \pm 9 \%$ and $ 46 \pm 9 \%$, and they are detected only at photon energies above 6 keV. By contra…
The millisecond pulsar MAXI J1816-195 was recently discovered in an outburst by MAXI in 2022 May. We study different properties of the pulsar using data from NuSTAR and NICER observations. The unstable burning of accreted material on the surface of neutron stars induces thermonuclear (Type-I) bursts. Several such thermonuclear bursts have been detected by MAXI J1816-195 during its outburst. We investigate the evolution of the burst profile with flux and energy using NuSTAR and NICER observations. During the NuSTAR observation, a total of four bursts were detected from the source. The duration …
We report on the nearly simultaneous \nicer{} and \nustar{} observations of the known X-ray transient XTE~J1739-285. These observations provide the first sensitive hard X-ray spectrum of this neutron star X-ray transient. The source was observed on 2020 February 19 in the hard spectral state with a luminosity of $0.007$ of the Eddington limit. The broadband $1-70 \kev{}$ \nicer{} and \nustar{} observation clearly detects a cutoff of the hard spectral component around $34-40 \kev{}$ when the continuum is fitted by a soft thermal component and a hard power-law component. This feature has been de…

The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on the International Space Station (ISS) observed strong photospheric expansion of the neutron star in 4U 1820-30 during a Type I X-ray burst. A thermonuclear helium flash in the star's envelope powered a burst that reached the Eddington limit. Radiation pressure pushed the photosphere out to ~200 km, while the blackbody temperature dropped to 0.45 keV. Previous observations of similar bursts were performed with instruments that are sensitive only above 3 keV, and the burst signal was weak at low temperatures. NICER's 0.2-12 keV passband e…
XTE J1701-407 is a newly discovered X-ray transient source. In this work we investigate its flux variability and study the intermediate long and short bursts discovered by Swift on July 17, and 27, 2008, respectively. So far, only one intermediate long burst, with a duration of ~18 minutes and ten days later a short burst, have been recorded from XTE J1701-407. We analyzed the public available data from Swift and RXTE, and compared the observed properties of the intermediate long burst with theoretical ignition condition and light curves to investigate the possible nuclear burning processes. T…
Accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs) show burst oscillations during thermonuclear explosions of the accreted plasma which are markedly different from those observed in non-pulsating low mass X-ray binaries. The AMXP XTE J1814-338 is known for having burst oscillations that are phase locked (constant phase difference) and coincident with the accretion powered pulsations during all its thermonuclear bursts but the last one. In this work we use a coherent timing analysis to investigate this phenomenon in more detail and with higher time resolution than was done in the past. We confirm that…
The prolific thermonuclear X-ray bursts from the outburst of the newly discovered millisecond pulsar MAXI~J1816--195 observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER
We present spectral and temporal properties of all the thermonuclear X-ray bursts observed from Aql X-1 by the Neutron Star Interior and Composition Explorer (NICER) between 2017 July and 2021 April. This is the first systematic investigation of a large sample of type I X-ray bursts from Aql X-1 with improved sensitivity at low energies. We detect 22 X-ray bursts including two short recurrence burst events in which the separation was only 451 s and 496 s. We perform time resolved spectroscopy of the bursts using the fixed and scaled background (f_a method) approaches. We show that the use of a…
We report the discovery with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) of narrow emission and absorption lines during photospheric radius expansion (PRE) X-ray bursts from the ultracompact binary 4U 1820-30. NICER observed the source in 2017 August accumulating about 60 ks of exposure. Five thermonuclear X-ray bursts were detected of which four showed clear signs of PRE. We extracted spectra during the PRE phases and fit each to a model that includes a comptonized component to describe the accretion-driven emission, and a black body for the burst thermal radiation. The temperature…
FRB180301 is one of the most actively repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) which has shown polarization angle changes in its radio burst emission, an indication for their likely origin in the magnetosphere of a highly-magnetized neutron star. We carried out a multi-wavelength campaign with the FAST radio telescope and NICER X-ray observatory to investigate any possible X-ray emission temporally coincident with the bright radio bursts. The observations took place on 2021 March 4, 9 and 19. We detected five bright radio bursts with FAST, four of which were strictly simultaneous with the NICER obse…
XTE J1810-197 (PSR J1809-1943) was the first ever magnetar which was found to emit transient radio emission. It has recently undergone another radio and high-energy outburst. This is only the second radio outburst that has been observed from this source. We observed J1810-197 soon after its recent radio outburst at low radio frequencies using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. We present the 650 MHz flux density evolution of the source in the early phases of the outburst, and its radio spectrum down to frequencies as low as 300 MHz. The magnetar also exhibits radio emission in the form of st…
We report on NICER observations of the Magnetar SGR~1935+2154, covering its 2020 burst storm and long-term persistent emission evolution up to $\sim90$ days post outburst. During the first 1120~seconds taken on April 28 00:40:58 UTC we detect over 217 bursts, corresponding to a burst rate of $>0.2$ bursts s$^{-1}$. Three hours later the rate is at 0.008 bursts s$^{-1}$, remaining at a comparatively low level thereafter. The $T_{90}$ burst duration distribution peaks at 840~ms; the distribution of waiting times to the next burst is fit with a log-normal with an average of 2.1 s. The 1-10 keV bu…
The neutron-star X-ray transient XTE J1701-462 was observed for $\sim$3 Ms with \xte during its 2006-2007 outburst. Here we report on the discovery of three type-I X-ray bursts from XTE J1701-462. They occurred as the source was in transition from the typical Z-source behavior to the typical atoll-source behavior, at $\sim10%$ of the Eddington luminosity. The first burst was detected in the Z-source flaring branch; the second in the vertex between the flaring and normal branches; and the third in the atoll-source soft state. The detection of the burst in the flaring branch cast doubts on earli…
We report the discovery with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) of mHz X-ray brightness oscillations from the "clocked burster." NICER observed the source in the periods 2017 June 20 - 29, July 11 - 13, and September 9 - 15, for a total useful exposure of 34 ks. Two consecutive dwells obtained on 2017 September 9 revealed highly significant oscillations at a frequency of 8 mHz. The fractional, sinusoidal modulation amplitude increases from 0.7 % at 1 keV to approximately 2 % at 6 keV. Similar oscillations were also detected at lower significance in three additional dwells. …
We report results of the INTEGRAL Target of Opportunity observations of the transient X-ray burster XTE J1810-189. The observations were performed on April 3--6, 2008, soon after the discovery of the source and near the peak of its outburst. That time the source had a flux of about 50 mCrab and exhibited a hard Comptonized X-ray spectrum extending well above 100 keV. Being approximated by a power law with an exponetial cut-off in the broad 3--100 keV energy band it gave the average photon index $Γ\simeq 1.6$ and $kT_{cutoff}\simeq 67$ keV. We found only slight indications for changes in the in…
Type I X-ray bursts are the result of an unstable thermonuclear burning of accreting matter on the neutron star (NS) surface. The quick release of energetic X-ray photons during such bursts interacts with the surrounding accretion disk, which raises the accretion rate due to Poynting-Robertson drag and, thus, a fraction of the burst emission is reflected. We analyzed two photospheric radius expansion bursts in the NS low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636--536 that took place in 2017, using data from Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer. The time-resolved burst spectra showed clear deviations fro…
We present the detection of 51 thermonuclear X-ray bursts observed from 4U 1636-536 by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) over the course of a three year monitoring campaign. We performed time resolved spectroscopy for 40 of these bursts and showed the existence of a strong soft excess in all the burst spectra. The excess emission can be characterized by the use of a scaling factor (f_a method) to the persistent emission of the source, which is attributed to the increased mass accretion rate on to the neutron star due to Poynting-Robertson drag. The soft excess emission can…
After 15 years, in late 2018, the magnetar XTE J1810-197 underwent a second recorded X-ray outburst event and reactivated as a radio pulsar. We initiated an X-ray monitoring campaign to follow the timing and spectral evolution of the magnetar as its flux decays using Swift, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and NICER observations. During the year-long campaign, the magnetar reproduced similar behaviour to that found for the first outburst, with a factor of two change in its spin-down rate from $\sim7.2\times10^{-12}$ s s$^{-1}$ to $\sim1.5\times10^{-11}$ s s$^{-1}$ after two months. Unique to this outburst,…
During 2003 and 2004 the Anomalous X-Ray Pulsar XTE J1810-197 went through a series of four bursts. The spectrum in the tail of one of these bursts shows a strong, significant emission feature ~13 keV, thereby encoding a wealth of information about the environment surrounding this object. In this paper we analyse this emission feature considering both cyclotron and atomic emission processes and weigh our findings against three leading AXP models: the Magnetar model, Fall-back disk model and the Quark nova model. We find that atomic emission from Rubidium within a Keplerian ring ($\sim$15 km fr…
We report for the first time below 1.5 keV, the detection of a secondary peak in an Eddington-limited thermonuclear X-ray burst observed by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) from the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1608-52. Our time-resolved spectroscopy of the burst is consistent with a model consisting of a varying-temperature blackbody, and an evolving persistent flux contribution, likely attributed to the accretion process. The dip in the burst intensity before the secondary peak is also visible in the bolometric flux. Prior to the dip, the blackbody temperature reached a max…
Swift J1858.6-0814 is a recently discovered X-ray binary notable for extremely strong variability (by factors $>100$ in soft X-rays) in its discovery state. We present the detection of five thermonuclear (Type I) X-ray bursts from Swift J1858.6-0814, implying that the compact object in the system is a neutron star. Some of the bursts show photospheric radius expansion, so their peak flux can be used to estimate the distance to the system. The peak luminosity, and hence distance, can depend on several system parameters; for the most likely values, a high inclination and a helium atmosphere, $D=…
In 2003, the magnetar XTE J1810-197 started an outburst that lasted until early 2007. In the following 11 years, the source stayed in a quiescent/low activity phase. XTE J1810-197 is one of the closest magnetars, hence its X-ray properties can be studied in detail even in quiescence and an extended monitoring has been carried out to study its long term timing and spectral evolution. Here, we report the results of new X-ray observations, taken between September 2017 and April 2018, with XMM-Newton, Chandra and Nicer. We derived a phase-connected timing solution yielding a frequency derivative o…
We present the results of two years of radio and X-ray monitoring of the magnetar XTE J1810$-$197 since the radio re-activation in late 2018. Single pulse analysis of radio observations from the Lovell and MkII telescopes at 1564 MHz and the Effelsberg telescope at 6 GHz has resulted in the detection of a total of 91 giant pulses (GPs) between MJDs 58858 and 59117. These GPs appear to be confined to two specific phase ranges (0.473 <= ϕ<= 0.502$ and 0.541 <= ϕ<= 0.567). We also observe that the first detection of GP emission corresponds to a minimum in the spin-down rate. Simultaneous radio an…
We present observations of the historic transient 4U 1730-22 as observed with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). After remaining in quiescence since its 1972 discovery, this X-ray binary showed renewed outburst activity in 2021 and 2022. We observed 4U 1730-22 extensively with NICER, detecting a total of 17 thermonuclear X-ray bursts. From a spectroscopic analysis, we find that these X-ray bursts can be divided into a group of bright and weak bursts. All bright bursts showed $1\sim2$ second rise times and a photospheric radius expansion phase, while the weak bursts showed …
Physical parameters of both the mass donor and compact object can be constrained in X-ray binaries with well-defined eclipses, as our survey of wind-fed supergiant X-ray binaries (SGXBs) IGR J16393-4643, IGR J16418-4532, IGR J16479-4514, IGR J18027-2016 and XTE J1855-026 reveals. Using the orbital period and Kepler's third law, we express the eclipse half-angle in terms of radius, inclination angle and the sum of the masses. Pulse-timing and radial velocity curves can give masses of both the donor and compact object as in the case of the "double-lined" binaries IGR J18027-2016 and XTE J1855-02…
We report on the detection of a kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). Analyzing approximately 165 ks of NICER exposure on the X-ray burster 4U 0614+09, we detect multiple instances of a single-peak upper kHz QPO, with centroid frequencies that range from 400 Hz to 750 Hz. We resolve the kHz QPO as a function of energy, and measure, for the first time, the QPO amplitude below 2 keV. We find the fractional amplitude at 1 keV is on the order of 2% rms, and discuss the implications for the QPO emission process in the context of Comp…
We study the timing properties of XTE J1858+034 using the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Burst Alert Telescope onboard Swift during the outburst in October--November 2019. We have investigated for Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) during the outburst and detected a low-frequency QPO at $\sim$196 mHz with $\sim$6% RMS variability from the NuSTAR observation. The QPO is fitted and explained with the model - power law and a Lorentzian component. We have also studied the variation of QPO frequency with energy. The beat frequency model and Keplerian frequency model both are suita…
Type I X-ray bursts and superbursts from accreting neutron stars illuminate the accretion disk and produce a reflection signal that evolves as the burst fades. Examining the evolution of reflection features in the spectra will give insight into the burst-disk interaction, a potentially powerful probe of accretion disk physics. At present, reflection has been observed during only two bursts of exceptional duration. We investigate the detectability of reflection signatures with four of the latest well-studied X-ray observatory concepts: Hitomi, NICER, Athena, and LOFT. Burst spectra are modeled …
We present the discovery of a low-frequency $\approx 5.7$ Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) feature in observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 in its soft-intermediate state, obtained in September-October 2017 by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). The feature is relatively broad (compared to other low-frequency QPOs; quality factor $Q\approx 2$) and weak (1.9% rms in 3-10 keV), and is accompanied by a weak harmonic and low-amplitude broadband noise. These characteristics identify it as a weak Type A/B QPO, similar to ones previously identified in the s…

XTE J1810-189 underwent an outburst in 2008, and was observed over $\sim 100$ d by RXTE. Performing a time-resolved spectral analysis on the photospheric radius expansion burst detected on 2008 May 4, we obtain the source distance in the range of 3.5--8.7 kpc for the first time. During its outburst, XTE J1810-189 did not enter into the high/soft state, and both the soft and hard colours decreased with decreasing flux. The fractional rms remained at high values ($\sim 30$ per cent). The RXTE/PCA spectra for 3-25 keV can be described by an absorbed power-law component with an additional Gaussian…
A few years after its discovery as a magnetar, SGR J1935+2154 started a new burst-active phase on 2020 April 27, accompanied by a large enhancement of its X-ray persistent emission. Radio single bursts were detected during this activation, strengthening the connection between magnetars and fast radio bursts. We report on the X-ray monitoring of SGR J1935+2154 from ~3 days prior to ~3 weeks after its reactivation, using Swift, NuSTAR, and NICER. We detected X-ray pulsations in the NICER and NuSTAR observations, and constrained the spin period derivative to |Pdot| < 3e-11 s/s (3 sigma c.l.). The…
We report on the hard X-ray burst and the first ~100 days NICER monitoring of the soft X-ray temporal and spectral evolution of the newly-discovered magnetar Swift J1818.0-1607. The burst properties are typical of magnetars with a duration of $T_{90}=10\pm4$ ms and a temperature of $kT=8.4\pm0.7$ keV. The 2--8 keV pulse shows a broad, single peak profile with a pulse fraction increasing with time from 30% to 43%. The NICER observations reveal strong timing noise with $\dotν$ varying erratically by a factor of 10, with an average long-term spin-down rate of $\dotν=(-2.48\pm0.03)\times10^{-11}$~…
Magnetars are young, magnetically-powered neutron stars possessing the strongest magnetic fields in the Universe. Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are extremely intense millisecond-long radio pulses of primarily extragalactic origin, and a leading attribution for their genesis focuses on magnetars. A hallmark signature of magnetars is their emission of bright, hard X-ray bursts of sub-second duration. On April 27th 2020, the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 emitted hundreds of X-ray bursts in a few hours. One of these temporally coincided with an FRB, the first detection of an FRB from the Milky Way. …
Swift J0243.6+6124 is a newly discovered Galactic Be/X-ray binary, revealed in late September 2017 in a giant outburst with a peak luminosity of 2E+39 (d/7 kpc)^2 erg/s (0.1-10 keV), with no formerly reported activity. At this luminosity, Swift J0243.6+6124 is the first known galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar. We describe Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER)} and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) timing and spectral analyses for this source. A new orbital ephemeris is obtained for the binary system using spin-frequencies measured with GBM and 15-50 keV fluxes measured with th…
