We propose a new deformed Rieffel product for functions in de Sitter spacetime, and study the resulting deformation of quantum field theory in de Sitter using warped convolutions. This deformation is obtained by embedding de Sitter in a higher-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, deforming there using the action of translations and subsequently projecting back to de Sitter. We determine the two-point function of a deformed free scalar quantum field, which differs from the undeformed one, in contrast to the results in deformed Minkowski spacetime where they coincide. Nevertheless, we show that in the limit where de Sitter spacetime becomes flat, we recover the well-known non-commutative Minkowski spacetime.
In the setting of non-interacting Klein-Gordon fields on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, we show that algebras of observables localized in a neighborhood of the boundary are subalgebras of a boundary algebra. The underlying mechanism is directly related to holography for classical fields. In particular, the proof relies on unique continuation theorems at the conformal boundary.
Quantum field theories on de Sitter spacetime with global U(1) gauge symmetry are deformed using the joint action of the internal symmetry group and a one-parameter group of boosts. The resulting theory turns out to be wedge-local and non-isomorphic to the initial one for a class of theories, including the free charged Dirac field. The properties of deformed models coming from inclusions of CAR-algebras are studied in detail.
By considering Hadamard vacuum states, we first construct the two-point functions associated with Stueckelberg massive electromagnetism in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Then, from the general formalism developed in [A. Belokogne and A. Folacci, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{93}, 044063 (2016)], we obtain an exact analytical expression for the vacuum expectation value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of the massive vector field propagating in these maximally symmetric spacetimes.
We construct wavepackets on de Sitter spacetime, with masses consistently defined from the eigenvalues of an irreducible representation of a Casimir element in the universal enveloping algebra of the Lorentz algebra and analyse their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, we show that, in the limit as the de Sitter radius tends to infinity, the wavepackets tend to the wavepackets of Minkowski spacetime and the plane waves arising after contraction have support sharply located on the mass shell.
Graviton propagator diverges in certain gauges in de Sitter spacetime. We address this problem in this work by generalizing the infinitesimal BRST transformations in de Sitter spacetime to finite field-dependent BRST (FFBRST) transformations. These FFBRST transformations are symmetry of the classical action, but do not leave path integral measure invariant for the graviton theory in de Sitter spacetime. Due to the non-trivial Jacobian of such finite transformation the path integral measure changes and hence FFBRST transformation is capable of relating theories in two different gauges. We expli…
It is found that there is no period in the imaginary Beltrami-time of the de Sitter spacetime with Beltrami metric and that the `surface-gravity' in view of inertial observers in de Sitter spacetime is zero! They show that the horizon might be at zero temperature in de Sitter spacetime and that the thermal property of the horizon in the de Sitter spacetime with a static metric should be analogous to that of the Rindler horizon in Minkowski spacetime.
We use planar coordinates as well as hyperbolic coordinates to separate the de Sitter spacetime into two parts. These two ways of cutting the de Sitter give rise to two different spatial infinities. For spacetimes which are asymptotic to either half of the de Sitter spacetime, we are able to provide definitions of the total energy, the total linear momentum, the total angular momentum, respectively. And we prove two positive mass theorems, corresponding to these two sorts of spatial infinities, for spacelike hypersurfaces whose mean curvatures are bounded by certain constant from above.
We study spacetimes with a closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor. It is shown that the D-dimensional Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime constructed by Chen-Lu-Pope is the only spacetime admitting a rank-2 closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor with a certain symmetry.
We investigate the net force on a rigid Casimir cavity generated by vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic field in three cases, de Sitter spacetime, de Sitter spacetime with weak gravitational field and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. In de Sitter spacetime the resulting net force follows the square inverse law but unfortunately it is too weak to be measurable due to the large universe radius. By introducing a weak gravitational field into the de Sitter spacetime, we find the net force now can be splited into two parts, one is the gravitational force due to the induced effective mass betwe…
The equation of cosmic string loops in Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes is derived. Having solved the equation numerically, we find that the loops can expand and exist except for too small ones.
We consider Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes and evaluate their mass, angular momentum and entropy according to the boundary counterterm prescription. We provide a physicall interpretation for angular velocity and angular momentum at future/past infinity. We show that the entropy of the four-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes is less than of pure de Sitter spacetime in agreement to the entropic N-bound. Moreover, we show that maximal mass conjecture which states any asymptotically de Sitter spacetime with mass greater than de Sitter has a cosmological singularity is respected by asymptotically de …
Holographic tensor networks associated to tilings of (1+1)-dimensional de Sitter spacetime are introduced. Basic features of these networks are discussed, compared, and contrasted with conjectured properties of quantum gravity in de Sitter spacetime. Notably, we highlight a correspondence between the quantum information capacity of the network and the cosmological constant.
It is possible to associate temperatures with the non-extremal horizons of a large class of spherically symmetric spacetimes using periodicity in the Euclidean sector and this procedure works for the de Sitter spacetime as well. But, unlike e.g., the black hole spacetimes, the de Sitter spacetime also allows a description in Friedmann coordinates. This raises the question of whether the thermality of the de Sitter horizon can be obtained, working entirely in the Friedmann coordinates, without reference to the static coordinates or using the symmetries of de Sitter spacetime. We discuss several…
We consider a free particle in a de Sitter spacetime. We use a picture in which the analogs of the Schrödinger operators of the particle are independent of both the time and the space coordinates. These operators induce operators which are related to Killing vectors of the de Sitter spacetime.
The higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime describes the general rotating asymptotically de Sitter black hole with NUT parameters. It is known that such a spacetime possesses a rank-2 closed conformal Killing-Yano (CKY) tensor as a ``hidden'' symmetry which provides the separation of variables for the geodesic equations and Klein-Gordon equations. We present a classification of higher-dimensional spacetimes admitting a rank-2 closed CKY tensor. This provides a generalization of the Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime. In particular, we show that the Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime is the only s…
Vacuum expectation values of the surface energy-momentum tensor is investigated for a massless scalar field obeying mixed boundary condition on a brane in de Sitter bulk. To generate the corresponding vacuum surface densities we use the conformal relation between de Sitter and Rindler spacetimes.
In the standard asymptotic expansion of four dimensional static asymptotically flat spacetimes, the coefficient of the first subleading term of the lapse function can be identified with the mass of the spacetime. Using the Hamiltonian formalism we show that, in asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter spacetimes endowed with a scalar field, the mass can read off in the same way only when the boundary conditions are compatible with the asymptotic realization of the anti-de Sitter symmetry. In particular, this implies that some prescriptions for computing the mass of a hairy spacetime are not suita…
We present a short and novel derivation of the Schwinger mechanism for particle pair production in $1+1$ dimensional de Sitter and Anti de Sitter spacetimes. We work directly in the flat embedding space and derive the pair production rates in these spacetimes via instanton methods. The derivation is manifestly coordinate independent, and also lends support to the possible deep connection between two conceptually disparate quantum phenomena - Schwinger effect and the Davies-Unruh effect.
It is generally believed the way to resolve the black hole information paradox in string theory is to embed the black hole in anti-deSitter spacetime -- without of course claiming that Schwarzschild-AdS is a realistic spacetime. Here we propose that, similarly, the best way to study topologically non-trivial versions of de Sitter spacetime from a stringy point of view is to embed them in an anti-de Sitter orbifold bulk, again without claiming that this is literally how de Sitter arises in string theory. Our results indicate that string theory may rule out the more complex spacetime topologies …
The reduction formulas for Dirac fermions are derived, using the exact solutions of free Dirac equation on de Sitter spacetime. In the framework of the perturbation theory one studies the Green functions and derive the scatering amplitude in the first orders of perturbation theory.
Hydrodynamics is a universal effective theory describing relaxation of quantum field theories towards equilibrium. Massive QFTs in de Sitter spacetime are never at equilibrium. We use holographic gauge theory/gravity correspondence to describe relaxation of a QFT to its Bunch-Davies vacuum - an attractor of its late-time dynamics. Specifically, we compute the analogue of the quasinormal modes describing the relaxation of a holographic toy model QFT in de Sitter.
We construct new axially symmetric solutions of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in a four dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. Possessing nonvanishing nonabelian charges, these regular configurations have also a nonzero angular momentum. Numerical arguments are also presented for the existence of rotating solutions of Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime.
De Sitter spacetime can be separated into two parts along two kinds of hypersurfaces and the half-de Sitter spacetimes are covered by the planar and hyperbolic coordinates respectively. Two positive energy theorems were proved previously for certain $¶$-asymptotically de Sitter and $\H$-asymptotically de Sitter initial data sets by the second author and collaborators. These initial data sets are asymptotic to time slices of the two kinds of half-de Sitter spacetimes respectively, and their mean curvatures are bounded from above by certain constants. While the mean curvatures violate these cond…
The propagation of electromagnetic plane waves with negative phase velocity (NPV) is considered in Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter spacetime. It is demonstrated that NPV propagation occurs in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime at lower values of the cosmological constant than is the case for de Sitter spacetime. Furthermore, we report that neither is NPV propagation observed in Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetime, nor is it possible outside the event horizon of a Schwarzschild blackhole.
The deep reason why the equations describing axial and polar perturbations of Schwarzschild black holes have the same spectrum is far from trivial. In this article, we revisit the original proof and try to make it clearer. Still focusing on uncharged and non-rotating black holes, we extend the results to spacetimes including a cosmological constant, which have so far mostly been investigated numerically from this perspective.
The quantization of a scalar field in anti de Sitter spacetime using Poincaré coordinates is considered. We find a discrete spectrum that is consistent with a possible mapping between bulk and boundary quantum states.
In this paper we evaluate the Wightman functions associated with a massive quantum scalar field in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes in the presence of a cosmic string. Having these functions we calculate the corresponding renormalized vacuum expectation values of the field squared and present the behavior of the contributions induced by the cosmic string as function of the proper distance to it for different values of the parameter which codify the presence of this linear topological defect.
A quantum Schwarzschild spacetime and a quantum Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime with cosmological constant $Λ$ are constructed within the framework of a noncommutative Riemannian geometry developed in an earlier publication. The metrics and curvatures of the quantum Schwarzschild spacetime and the quantum Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime are computed. It is shown that up to the second order in the deformation parameter, the quantum spacetimes are solutions of a noncommutative Einstein equation which is proposed in this paper.
Casimir effect for massless minimally coupled scalar field is studied. An explicit answer for de Sitter spacetime is obtained and analized. Cosmological implications of the result are discussed.
Generalized Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime is the most general spacetime which admits a rank-2 closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor. It contains the higher-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter black holes with partially equal angular momenta. We study the separability of gravitational perturbations in the generalized Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime. We show that a certain type of tensor perturbations admits the separation of variables. The linearized perturbation equations for the Einstein condition are transformed into the ordinary differential equations of Fuchs type.
We compute the physical graviton two-point function in de Sitter spacetime with three-sphere spatial sections. We demonstrate that the large-distance growth present in the corresponding two-point function in spatially flat de Sitter spacetime is absent. We verify that our two-point function agrees with that in Minkowski spacetime in the zero cosmological constant limit.
It is shown that the isometry group of the de Sitter spacetime includes two different three-dimensional Abelian subgroups which transform between themselves through a discrete isometry corresponding to the time reversal in the five-dimensional Minkowski spacetime embedding the de Sitter one. The eigenfunctions of the generators of these Abelian subgroups form two different sets of quantum modes correlated by the mentioned isometry.
In this letter the nontopological scalar solitons with a self-interaction potential are investigated in a static de Sitter spacetime and their field equations are derived. In particular, with series expansion we prove analytically the nonexistence of the solutions under the boundary conditions, which show that some nontopological solitons can not live in the background.
We argue that the flat spacetime with inexact quantum mechanics in it is dual to the de Sitter spacetime with exact quantum mechanics in it, and the positive cosmological constant of this de Sitter spacetime is in the second order of the degree of the violation of the bulk quantum mechanics in the flat spacetime. The flat spacetime is holographic and has a dual time-contracted boundary conformal field theory with two redefined central charges at null infinity. The vanishing smallness of the observed positive cosmological constant suggests the extraordinary exactness of the bulk quantum mechani…
Because of the presence of a cosmological horizon the dilute instanton gas approximation used for the derivation of the Coleman-De Luccia tunneling rate in de Sitter spacetime receives additional contributions due to the finite instanton separation. Here I calculate the first corrections to the vacuum decay rate that arise from this effect and depend on the parameters of the theory and the cosmological constant of the background spacetime.
Classical geometry of de Sitter spacetime is reviewed in arbitrary dimensions. Topics include coordinate systems, geodesic motions, and Penrose diagrams with detailed calculations.
The energy-momentum tensor for a massless conformally coupled scalar field in de Sitter spacetime in the presence of a couple curved branes is investigated. We assume that the scalar field satisfies the Robin boundary condition on the surfaces. Static de Sitter space is conformally related to the Rindler space, as a result we can obtain vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum tensor for conformally invariant field in static de Sitter space from the corresponding Rindler counterpart by the conformal transformation.
String propagation is investigated in de Sitter and black hole backgrounds using both exact and approximative methods. The circular string evolution in de Sitter space is discussed in detail with respect to energy and pressure, mathematical solution and physical interpretation, multi-string solutions etc. We compare with the circular string evolution in the 2+1 dimensional black hole anti de Sitter spacetime and in the equatorial plane of ordinary 3+1 dimensional stationary axially symmetric spacetime solutions of Einstein general relativity. Using an approximative string perturbation approach…
We study q-stars with various symmetries in anti de Sitter spacetime in 3+1 dimensions. Comparing with the case of flat spacetime, we find that the value of the field at the center of the soliton is larger when the other parameters show a more complicated behavior. We also investigate their phase space when the symmetry is local and the effect of the charge to its stability.
The exact general solution of circular strings in $2+1$ dimensional de Sitter spacetime is described completely in terms of elliptic functions. The novel feature here is that one single world-sheet generically describes {\it infinitely many} (different and independent) strings. This has no analogue in flat spacetime. The circular strings are either oscillating ("stable") or indefinitely expanding ("unstable"). We then compute the {\it exact} equation of state of circular strings in the $2+1$ dimensional de Sitter (dS) and anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes, and analyze its properties for the diff…
In this letter the nontopological scalar solitons are investigated in an anti de Sitter spacetime. We find analytically that the solitons obeying the necessary conditions $m=\frac{2}{\sqrt{3}}|Λ|^{1/2}$ or $m=\sqrt{\frac{2(n+3)(2n+3)}{3}}|Λ|^{1/2}$ can exist in the background by means of the series expansion.
Properties of Green's functions may be derived in either first or second quantisation. We illustrate this with a factorisation property for propagators in arbitrary spacetimes, and apply it to scalar fields in AdS space.
We show in this note that the Padmanabhan expression $E = a/2$ for the energy of the Schwarzschild and de Sitter spacetimes (a - the horizon radius) is also valid for the Rindler horizon, using an analogy with the electrostatic case.
We report on the multipolar equations of motion for spinning test bodies in the de Sitter spacetime of constant positive curvature. The dynamics of spinning particles is discussed for the two supplementary conditions of Frenkel and Tulczyjew. Furthermore, the 4-momentum and the spin are explicitly expressed in terms of the spacetime coordinates with the help of the 10 Killing vectors available in de Sitter spacetime.
We investigate the stability of a new warped black string with nontrivial topologies in five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. After studying the linear gravitational perturbation, we find that this black string is unstable when the Kaluza-Klein mass falls in a certain range and the instability exists for all topological spacetimes.
Unlike the extremal Reissner - Nordström black hole in ordinary spacetime, the one in anti-de Sitter spacetime is a minimum of action and has zero entropy if quantization is carried out after extremalization. However, if extremalization is carried out after quantization, then the entropy is a quarter of the area as in the usual case.
We investigate the physical properties of the de Sitter spacetime and new type-de Sitter black holes in new massive gravity, a higher derivative gravity theory in three dimensions. We calculate thermodynamic quantities and check that the first law of thermodynamics is satisfied. In particular, we obtain the energies of the de Sitter spacetime and new type-de Sitter black holes from the renormalized Brown-York boundary stress tensor on the Euclidean surfaces at late temporal infinity. We also obtain the quasinormal modes and by using them we find that the entropy spectra are equally spaced via …
We show how to compute the mass of a Kerr-anti-de Sitter spacetime with respect to the anti-de Sitter background in any dimension, using a superpotential which has been derived from standard Noether identities. The calculation takes no account of the source of the curvature and confirms results obtained for black holes via the first law of thermodynamics.
Numerical arguments are presented for the existence of regular and black hole solutions of the Einstein-Skyrme equations with a positive cosmological constant. These classical configurations approach asymptotically the de Sitter spacetime. The main properties of the solutions and the differences with respect to the asymptotically flat ones are discussed. It particular our results suggest that, for a positive cosmological constant, the mass evaluated as timelike infinity in infinite. Special emphasis is set to De Sitter black holes Skyrmions which display two horizons.
The scattering of a charged scalar field on Coulomb potential is studied using solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation which have a definite momentum. One obtains that in contrast with what happens on Minkowski case the modulus of momentum is not conserved in the scattering process on de Sitter space.
It is found that de-Sitter spacetime, the constant-curvature matter-free solution of the Einstein equations with a positive cosmological constant, becomes classically unstable due to the dynamic effects of a certain type of vector field (fundamentally different from a gauge field). The perturbed de-Sitter universe evolves towards a final exotic singularity. The relevant vector-field configurations violate the strong and dominant energy conditions.
It is known that the graviton two-point function for the de Sitter invariant "Euclidean" vacuum in a physical gauge grows logarithmically with distance in spatially-flat de Sitter spacetime. We show that this logarithmic behaviour is a gauge artifact by explicitly demonstrating that the same behaviour can be reproduced by a pure-gauge two-point function.
We show how to construct a set of Euclidean conformal correlation functions on the boundary of a de Sitter space from an interacting bulk quantum field theory with a certain asymptotic behaviour. We discuss the status of the boundary theory w.r.t. the reflection positivity and conclude that no obvious physical holographic interpretation is available.
