Providing visual summaries of scientific publications can increase information access for readers and thereby help deal with the exponential growth in the number of scientific publications. Nonetheless, efforts in providing visual publication summaries have been few and far apart, primarily focusing on the biomedical domain. This is primarily because of the limited availability of annotated gold standards, which hampers the application of robust and high-performing supervised learning techniques. To address these problems we create a new benchmark dataset for selecting figures to serve as visual summaries of publications based on their abstracts, covering several domains in computer science. Moreover, we develop a self-supervised learning approach, based on heuristic matching of inline references to figures with figure captions. Experiments in both biomedical and computer science domains show that our model is able to outperform the state of the art despite being self-supervised and therefore not relying on any annotated training data.
We present the Webis-STEREO-21 dataset, a massive collection of Scientific Text Reuse in Open-access publications. It contains more than 91 million cases of reused text passages found in 4.2 million unique open-access publications. Featuring a high coverage of scientific disciplines and varieties of reuse, as well as comprehensive metadata to contextualize each case, our dataset addresses the most salient shortcomings of previous ones on scientific writing. Webis-STEREO-21 allows for tackling a wide range of research questions from different scientific backgrounds, facilitating both qualitativ…

In this work, we compare two simple methods of tagging scientific publications with labels reflecting their content. As a first source of labels Wikipedia is employed, second label set is constructed from the noun phrases occurring in the analyzed corpus. We examine the statistical properties and the effectiveness of both approaches on the dataset consisting of abstracts from 0.7 million of scientific documents deposited in the ArXiv preprint collection. We believe that obtained tags can be later on applied as useful document features in various machine learning tasks (document similarity, clu…

The scientific world is changing at a rapid pace, with new technology being developed and new trends being set at an increasing frequency. This paper presents a framework for conducting scientific analyses of academic publications, which is crucial to monitor research trends and identify potential innovations. This framework adopts and combines various techniques of Natural Language Processing, such as word embedding and topic modelling. Word embedding is used to capture semantic meanings of domain-specific words. We propose two novel scientific publication embedding, i.e., PUB-G and PUB-W, wh…

Claims are a fundamental unit of scientific discourse. The exponential growth in the number of scientific publications makes automatic claim extraction an important problem for researchers who are overwhelmed by this information overload. Such an automated claim extraction system is useful for both manual and programmatic exploration of scientific knowledge. In this paper, we introduce a new dataset of 1,500 scientific abstracts from the biomedical domain with expert annotations for each sentence indicating whether the sentence presents a scientific claim. We introduce a new model for claim ex…
Several methods have been explored for automating parts of Systematic Mapping (SM) and Systematic Review (SR) methodologies. Challenges typically evolve around the gaps in semantic understanding of text, as well as lack of domain and background knowledge necessary to bridge that gap. In this paper we investigate possible ways of automating parts of the SM/SR process, i.e. that of extracting keywords and key-phrases from scientific documents using unsupervised methods, which are then used as a basis to construct the corresponding Classification Scheme using semantic key-phrase clustering techni…
Extracting metadata from scientific papers can be considered a solved problem in NLP due to the high accuracy of state-of-the-art methods. However, this does not apply to German scientific publications, which have a variety of styles and layouts. In contrast to most of the English scientific publications that follow standard and simple layouts, the order, content, position and size of metadata in German publications vary greatly among publications. This variety makes traditional NLP methods fail to accurately extract metadata from these publications. In this paper, we present a method that ext…

Quickly moving to a new area of research is painful for researchers due to the vast amount of scientific literature in each field of study. One possible way to overcome this problem is to summarize a scientific topic. In this paper, we propose a model of summarizing a single article, which can be further used to summarize an entire topic. Our model is based on analyzing others' viewpoint of the target article's contributions and the study of its citation summary network using a clustering approach.

In this work, we propose a new approach for discovering various relationships among keywords over the scientific publications based on a Markov Chain model. It is an important problem since keywords are the basic elements for representing abstract objects such as documents, user profiles, topics and many things else. Our model is very effective since it combines four important factors in scientific publications: content, publicity, impact and randomness. Particularly, a recommendation system (called SciRecSys) has been presented to support users to efficiently find out relevant articles.
The growth rate of the number of scientific publications is constantly increasing, creating important challenges in the identification of valuable research and in various scholarly data management applications, in general. In this context, measures which can effectively quantify the scientific impact could be invaluable. In this work, we present BIP! DB, an open dataset that contains a variety of impact measures calculated for a large collection of more than 100 million scientific publications from various disciplines.
Scientific software is one of the key elements for reproducible research. However, classic publications and related scientific software are typically not (sufficiently) linked, and it lacks tools to jointly explore these artefacts. In this paper, we report on our work on developing an analytics tool for jointly exploring software and publications. The presented prototype, a concept for automatic code discovery, and two use cases demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of the proposal. Submitted to TPDL 2018 as Demonstration Paper.
The aim of this note is to propose a definition of the scientific diversity and corollarly, a measure of the "interdisciplinarity" of collaborations. With respect to previous studies, the proposed approach consists of 2 steps : first, the definition of similarity between journals and second, these similarities are used to characterize the homogeneity (or, on the contrary the diversity) of a publication list (that can be for one individual or a team).
With an exponentially growing number of scientific papers published each year, advanced tools for exploring and discovering publications of interest are becoming indispensable. To empower users beyond a simple keyword search provided e.g. by Google Scholar, we present the novel web application PubVis. Powered by a variety of machine learning techniques, it combines essential features to help researchers find the content most relevant to them. An interactive visualization of a large collection of scientific publications provides an overview of the field and encourages the user to explore articl…
One way to assess a certain aspect of the value of scientific research is to measure the attention it receives on social media. While previous research has mostly focused on the "number of mentions" of scientific research on social media, the current study applies "topic networks" to measure public attention to scientific research on Twitter. Topic networks are the networks of co-occurring author keywords in scholarly publications and networks of co-occurring hashtags in the tweets mentioning those scholarly publications. This study investigates which topics in opioid scholarly publications ha…
Post publication assessment remains necessary to check erroneous or fraudulent scientific publications. We present an online platform, the 'Problematic Paper Screener' (https://www.irit.fr/~Guillaume.Cabanac/problematic-paper-screener) that leverages both automatic machine detection and human assessment to identify and flag already published problematic articles. We provide a new effective tool to curate the scientific literature.
Finding relevant scientific articles is crucial for advancing knowledge. Recommendation systems are helpful for such purpose, although they have only been applied to science recently. This article describes EILEEN (Exploratory Innovator of LitEraturE Networks), a recommendation system for scientific publications and grants with open source code and datasets. We describe EILEEN's architecture for ingesting and processing documents and modeling the recommendation system and keyphrase estimator. Using a unique dataset of log-in user behavior, we validate our recommendation system against Latent S…

In this paper, we investigate mathematical content representations suitable for the automated classification of and the similarity search in STEM documents using standard machine learning algorithms: the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and the Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). The methods are evaluated on a subset of arXiv.org papers with the Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) as a reference classification and using the standard precision/recall/F1-measure metrics. The results give insight into how different math representations may influence the performance of the classification and sim…
Research has shown that most resources shared in articles (e.g., URLs to code or data) are not kept up to date and mostly disappear from the web after some years (Zeng et al., 2019). Little is known about the factors that differentiate and predict the longevity of these resources. This article explores a range of explanatory features related to the publication venue, authors, references, and where the resource is shared. We analyze an extensive repository of publications and, through web archival services, reconstruct how they looked at different time points. We discover that the most importan…
Finding relevant publications is important for scientists who have to cope with exponentially increasing numbers of scholarly material. Algorithms can help with this task as they help for music, movie, and product recommendations. However, we know little about the performance of these algorithms with scholarly material. Here, we develop an algorithm, and an accompanying Python library, that implements a recommendation system based on the content of articles. Design principles are to adapt to new content, provide near-real time suggestions, and be open source. We tested the library on 15K poste…
An important aspect of a researcher's activities is to find relevant and related publications. The task of a recommender system for scientific publications is to provide a list of papers that match these criteria. Based on the collection of publications managed by Mendeley, four data sets have been assembled that reflect different aspects of relatedness. Each of these relatedness scenarios reflect a user's search strategy. These scenarios are public groups, venues, author publications and user libraries. The first three of these data sets are being made publicly available for other researchers…

Cybersecurity is a very challenging topic of research nowadays, as digitalization increases the interaction of people, software and services on the Internet by means of technology devices and networks connected to it. The field is broad and has a lot of unexplored ground under numerous disciplines such as management, psychology, and data science. Its large disciplinary spectrum and many significant research topics generate a considerable amount of information, making it hard for us to find what we are looking for when researching a particular subject. This work proposes a new search engine for…
We introduce an approach to automatic indexing of e-prints based on a pattern-matching technique making extensive use of an Associative Patterns Dictionary (APD), developed by us. Entries in the APD consist of natural language phrases with the same semantic interpretation as a set of keywords from a controlled vocabulary. The method also allows to recognize within e-prints formulae written in TeX notations that might also appear as keywords. We present an automatic indexing system, AUTEX, which we have applied to keyword index e-prints in selected areas in high energy physics (HEP) making use …
The scientific community is facing one of its greatest challenges in solving a global health problem: COVID-19 pandemic. This situation has generated an unprecedented volume of publications. What is the volume, in terms of publications, of research on COVID-19? The general objective of this research work is to obtain a global vision of the daily growth of scientific production on COVID-19 in different databases (Dimensions, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus-Elsevier, Pubmed and eight repositories). In relation to the results obtained, Dimensions indexes a total of 9435 publications (69% w…
Attempts to understand the consequence of any individual scientist's activity within the long-term trajectory of science is one of the most difficult questions within the philosophy of science. Because scientific publications play such as central role in the modern enterprise of science, bibliometric techniques which measure the ``impact'' of an individual publication as a function of the number of citations it receives from subsequent authors have provided some of the most useful empirical data on this question. Until recently, Thompson/ISI has provided the only source of large-scale ``invert…
Nowadays, metadata information is often given by the authors themselves upon submission. However, a significant part of already existing research papers have missing or incomplete metadata information. German scientific papers come in a large variety of layouts which makes the extraction of metadata a non-trivial task that requires a precise way to classify the metadata extracted from the documents. In this paper, we propose a multimodal deep learning approach for metadata extraction from scientific papers in the German language. We consider multiple types of input data by combining natural la…
During the last two decades, India has emerged as a major knowledge producer in the world, however different reports put it at different ranks, varying from 3rd to 9th places. The recent commissioned study reports of Department of Science and Technology (DST) done by Elsevier and Clarivate Analytics, rank India at 5thand 9th places, respectively. On the other hand, an independent report by National Science Foundation (NSF) of United States (US), ranks India at 3rd place on research output in Science and Engineering area. Interestingly, both, the Elsevier and the NSF reports use Scopus data, an…
Although the content in scientific publications is increasingly challenging, it is necessary to investigate another important problem, that of scientific information understanding. For this proposed problem, we investigate novel methods to assist scholars (readers) to better understand scientific publications by enabling physical and virtual collaboration. For physical collaboration, an algorithm will group readers together based on their profiles and reading behavior, and will enable the cyberreading collaboration within a online reading group. For virtual collaboration, instead of pushing re…
The problems of estimating the similarity index of mathematical and other scientific publications containing equations and formulas are discussed for the first time. It is shown that the presence of equations and formulas (as well as figures, drawings, and tables) is a complicating factor that significantly complicates the study of such texts. It is shown that the method for determining the similarity index of publications, based on taking into account individual mathematical symbols and parts of equations and formulas, is ineffective and can lead to erroneous and even completely absurd conclu…

Evaluating the performance of researchers and measuring the impact of papers written by scientists is the main objective of citation analysis. Various indices and metrics have been proposed for this. In this paper, we propose a new citation index CITEX, which gives normalized scores to authors and papers to determine their rankings. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first citation index which simultaneously assigns scores to both authors and papers. Using these scores, we can get an objective measure of the reputation of an author and the impact of a paper. We model this problem as an …
