This paper describes a study of the generation of a plughole vortex and its consequences in a drainpipe during drainage of water from a stationary rectangular tank. The critical and minimum depths of water above the inlet of the drainpipe, where a surface dip starts to develop for drainpipes of various diameters, were examined parametrically. This study explored the following naturally occurring phenomena arising from a plughole vortex. (i) A plughole vortex initially causes a surface dip to develop towards the inlet of the drainpipe and as the surface dip approaches the inlet of the drainpipe it creates a droplet-shaped air bubble. (ii) A unique bubble transformation, i.e., from a droplet-shaped to a donut-shaped bubble ring, occurs just after the separation of the droplet-shaped air bubble from the surface dip. (iii) The donut-shaped bubble ring flows with the drain water and initially causes bubbly flow in the drainpipe. (iv) As the water head above the inlet of the drainpipe decreases, the droplet-shaped bubble size increases, and consequently, the bubble ring size increases and causes slug flow in the drainpipe. (v) As the slugs combine, the flow of the draining water eventually becomes annular flow in the drainpipe. Sounds, such as that of instantaneous fizz and bubble sink draining, were observed to be produced as a result of the bubble formation process. Temporal changes in the shape and size of the air bubbles were studied. Within the range of 0.45 to 0.6, the ratio of the bubble diameter to the bubble length was found to be linearly proportional to the ratio of the water depth to the diameter of the drainpipe. Several drainage cases were simulated numerically to observe the physics of these naturally occurring phenomena. The shapes and sizes of the vortices induced by plugholes have been visualised and analysed using the vortex core method.
A network community-based reduced-order model is developed to capture key interactions amongst coherent structures in high-dimensional unsteady vortical flows. The present approach is data-inspired and founded on network-theoretic techniques to identify important vortical communities that are comprised of vortical elements that share similar dynamical behavior. The overall interaction-based physics of the high-dimensional flow field is distilled into the vortical community centroids, considerably reducing the system dimension. Taking advantage of these vortical interactions, the proposed metho…
We demonstrate the effective use of randomized methods for linear algebra to perform network-based analysis of complex vortical flows. Network theoretic approaches can reveal the connectivity structures among a set of vortical elements and analyze their collective dynamics. These approaches have recently been generalized to analyze high-dimensional turbulent flows, for which network computations can become prohibitively expensive. In this work, we propose efficient methods to approximate network quantities, such as the leading eigendecomposition of the adjacency matrix, using randomized method…
The dispersion of respiratory saliva droplets by indoor wake structures may enhance the transmission of various infectious diseases, as the wake spreads virus-laden droplets across the room. Thus, this study analyses the interaction between vortical wake structures and exhaled multi-component saliva droplets. A self-propelling analytically-described dipolar vortex is chosen as a model wake flow, passing through a cloud of micron-sized evaporating saliva droplets. The droplets' spatial location, velocity, diameter, and temperature are traced and coupled to their local flow field. For the first …
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) and modal analysis techniques are applied to investigate the flow over a NACA-0012 airfoil at a Reynolds number of 50,000. Three different sweep angles are considered, namely 0, 20 and 40 degrees, for two sweep configurations. Using models for the separation bubbles, Reynolds number and thickness effects are separated from sweep effects. The transitional flow structure is observed to change with sweep angle, with swept cases showing more spanwise-coherent large structures. At 20 degrees sweep angle these structures are perpendicular to the free stream directi…
A new mathematical analysis of exhaled respiratory droplet dynamics and settling distances in the vicinity of vortical environments is presented. Recent experimental and theoretical studies suggest that vortical flow structures may enhance the settling distances of exhaled respiratory droplets beyond the two-meter distancing rule recommended by health authorities lately. We propose a mathematical framework to study the underlying physical mechanism responsible for the entrapment and subsequently delayed settling times of evaporating droplets and solid particles. A dipolar vortex is considered …
This short article describes flow parameters, numerical method, and animations of the fluid dynamics video "LES of an Inclined Jet into a Supersonic Turbulent Crossflow" (http://ecommons.library.cornell.edu/bitstream/1813/14073/3/GFM-2009.mpg [high-resolution] and http://ecommons.library.cornell.edu/bitstream/1813/14073/2/GFM-2009-web.m1v [low-resolution] video). We performed large-eddy simulation with the sub-grid scale (LES-SGS) stretched-vortex model of momentum and scalar transport to study the gas-dynamics interactions of a helium inclined round jet into a supersonic ($M=3.6$) turbulent (…

We propose a method to visualize vortex cores based on manipulation of the pressure field produced by isolated vortices in incompressible flow. Under ideal conditions the function $D=2|\nabla P|/\nabla^2 P$ yields an approximate distance to vortex centerlines. As opposed to local methods to identify coherent structures, isosurfaces of $D$ produce a field of vortex tubes equidistant to the vortex core center which, ideally, are independent of vortex intensity or size. In contrast to other line-vortex identification methods, which typically rely on algorithms to detect vortex core lines and freq…
We consider the mixing of a viscous fluid by the rotation of a pitched blade turbine inside an open, cylindrical tank, with air as the lighter fluid above. To examine the flow and interfacial dynamics, we utilise a highly-parallelised implementation of a hybrid front-tracking/level-set method that employs a domain-decomposition parallelisation strategy. Our numerical technique is designed to capture faithfully complex interfacial deformation, and changes of topology, including interface rupture and dispersed phase coalescence. As shown via transient, three-dimensional direct numerical simulati…
We present a simulation for the interactions of shockwaves with light spherical density inhomogeneities. Euler equations for two-phase compressible flows are solved in a 3D uniform resolution finite volume based solver using 5th order WENO reconstructions of the primitive quantities, HLL-type numerical fluxes and 3rd order TVD time stepping scheme. In this study, a normal Mach 3 shockwave in air is directed at a helium bubble with an interface Atwood number of -0.76. We employ 4 billion cells on a supercomputing cluster and demonstrate the development of this flow until relatively late times. …
Wakes of aircraft and automobiles with relatively flat slanted aftbodies are often characterized by a streamwise-oriented vortex pair, whose strength affects drag and other crucial performance parameters. We examine the stability characteristics of the vortex pair emerging over an abstraction comprised of a streamwise-aligned cylinder terminated with an upswept plane. The Reynolds number is fixed at 5000 and the upsweep angle is increased from 20deg to 32deg. At 20deg, the LES yields a steady streamwise-oriented vortex pair, and the global modes are also stable. At 32deg, the LES displays unst…
Forward-swept wings offer unique advantages in the aerodynamic performance of air vehicles. However, the low-Reynolds-number characteristics of such wings have not been explored in the past. In this work, we numerically study laminar separated flows over forward-swept wings with semi aspect ratios $sAR=0.5$ to 2 at a chord-based Reynolds number of 400. Forward-swept wings generate wakes that are significantly different from those of backward-swept wings. For low-aspect-ratio forward wings, the wakes remain steady due to the strong downwash effects induced by the tip vortices. For larger aspect…
Fuel sprays produce high-velocity, jet-like flows that impart turbulence onto the ambient flow field. The spray-induced turbulence augments fuel-air mixing, which has a primary role in controlling pollutant formation and cyclic variability in engines. This paper presents tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV) measurements to analyse the 3D spray-induced turbulence during the intake stroke of a direct-injection engine. The spray produces a strong spray-induced jet in the far field, which travels through the cylinder and imparts turbulence onto the surrounding flow. Planar high-speed PIV …
We present a robust immersed boundary (IB) method for high density ratio multiphase flows that is capable of modeling complex wave-structure interaction (WSI) problems arising in marine and coastal engineering applications. The IB/WSI methodology is enabled by combining the distributed Lagrange multiplier (DLM) method of Sharma and Patankar (J Comp Phys, 2005) with a robust level set method based multiphase flow solver. The fluid solver integrates the conservative form of the variable-coefficient incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using a hybrid preconditioner and ensures consistent transp…
We experimentally study the influence of wall roughness on bubble drag reduction in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow, i.e.\ the flow between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders. We measure the drag in the system for the cases with and without air, and add roughness by installing transverse ribs on either one or both of the cylinders. For the smooth wall case (no ribs) and the case of ribs on the inner cylinder only, we observe strong drag reduction up to $DR=33\%$ and $DR=23\%$, respectively, for a void fraction of $α=6\%$. However, with ribs mounted on both cylinders or on the outer…
In this paper, we present the results of a numerical study of air-water turbulent bubbly flow in a periodic vertical square duct. The study is conducted using a novel numerical technique which leverages Volume of Fluid method for interface capturing and Sharp Surface Force method for accurate representation of the surface tension forces. A three-dimensional geometry construction method is employed during solution of interface equation which gives absolute conservation of mass and sharp interface between gas and liquid phases. The entire algorithm has been implemented on a data parallel mode on…
