We prove that if the frequency of the quasi-periodic $\mathrm{SL}(2,\R)$ cocycle is Diophantine, then the following properties are dense in the subcritical regime: for any $\frac{1}{2}<κ<1$, the Lyapunov exponent is exactly $κ$-Hölder continuous; the extended eigenstates of the potential have optimal sub-linear growth; and the dual operator associated a subcritical potential has power-law decay eigenfunctions. The proof is based on fibered Anosov-Katok constructions for quasi-periodic $\mathrm{SL}(2,\R)$ cocycles.
We construct a plethora of Anosov-Katok diffeomorphisms with non-ergodic generic measures and various other mixing and topological properties. We also construct an explicit collection of the set containing the generic points of the system with interesting values of its Hausdorff dimension.
The Anosov-Katok method is one of the most powerful tools of constructing smooth volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of entropy zero with prescribed ergodic or topological properties. To measure the complexity of systems with entropy zero, invariants like slow entropy have been introduced. In this article we develop several mechanisms facilitating computation of topological and measure-theoretic slow entropy of Anosov-Katok diffeomorphisms.
This paper is part 1 of a series of papers culminating in the result that measure preserving diffeomorphisms of the disc or 2-torus are unclassifiable. It also addresses another classical problem: which abstract measure preserving systems are realizable as smooth diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold? The main result of this paper gives new symbolic representations of the Anosov-Katok diffeomorphisms.
We prove that toric symplectic manifolds admit Hamiltonian pseudo-rotations with a finite, and in a sense minimal, number of ergodic measures. The set of ergodic measures of these pseudo-rotations consists of the measure induced by the symplectic volume form and the Dirac measures supported at the fixed points of the torus action. Our construction relies on the conjugation method of Anosov and Katok.
We provide a general argument for the failure of Anosov-Katok-like constructions (as in \cite{AFKo2015} and \cite{NKInvDist}) to produce Cohomologically Rigid diffeomorphisms in manifolds other than tori. A $C^{\infty }$ smooth diffeomorphism $f $ of a compact manifold $M$ is Cohomologically Rigid iff the equation, known as Linear Cohomological one, \begin{equation*} ψ\circ f - ψ= φ\end{equation*} admits a $C^{\infty }$ smooth solution $ψ$ for every $φ$ in a codimension $1$ closed subspace of $C^{\infty } (M, \mathbb{C} )$. As an application, we show that no Cohomologically Rigid diffeomorphis…
We study the smooth untwisted cohomology with real coefficients for the action on [SL(2, R) \times \cdot \cdot \cdot \times SL(2, R)]/Γ by the subgroup of diagonal matrices, where Γ is an irreducible lattice. In the top degree, we show that the obstructions to solving the coboundary equation come from distributions that are invariant under the action. In intermediate degrees, we show that the cohomology trivializes. It has been conjectured by A. and S. Katok that, for a standard partially hyperbolic R^d- or Z^d-action, the obstructions to solving the top-degree coboundary equation are given by…
We prove that in an open and dense set, Symplectic linear cocycles over time one maps of Anosov flows, have positive Lyapunov exponents for SRB measures.
We prove that every smooth diffeomorphism group valued cocycle over certain abelian Anosov actions on tori (and more generally on infranilmanifolds), is a smooth coboundary on a finite cover, if the cocycle is center bunched and trivial at a fixed point. For smooth cocycles which are not trivial at a fixed point, we have smooth reduction of cocycles to constant ones, when lifted to the universal cover. These results on cocycle trivialisation apply, via the existing global rigidity results, to maximal Cartan actions by Anosov diffeomorphisms (with at least one transitive), on any compact smooth…
We effect thermodynamical formalism for the non-uniformly hyperbolic $C^\infty$ map of the two dimensional torus known as the Katok map. It is a slowdown of a linear Anosov map near the origin and it is a local (but not small) perturbation. We prove the existence of equilibrium measures for any continuous potential function and obtain uniqueness of equilibrium measures associated to the geometric $t$-potential $φ_t=-t\log |df|_{E^u(x)}|$ for any $t\in(t_0,\infty)$, $t\neq 1$ where $E^u(x)$ denotes the unstable direction. We show that $t_0$ tends to $-\infty$ as the size of the perturbation ten…
We consider extensions of Anosov diffeomorphisms of an infranilmanifold by the real vector space R^ω. Our main result, based on the analogous theorem in finite dimensions proven by Nitica and Pollicott, is that any Holder cocycle satisfying an obvious obstruction induces a topologically transitive extension (topologically weak mixing, in fact). We show how to construct cocycles satisfying these conditions for any Anosov diffeomorphism, and then observe that unlike the finite dimensional case, where cocycles satisfying the obstruction are C^0-stably transitive, there can be no infinite-dimensio…
Pesin sets are measurable sets along which the behavior of a matrix cocycle above a measure preserving dynamical system is explicitly controlled. In uniformly hyper-bolic dynamics, we study how often points return to Pesin sets under suitable conditions on the cocycle: if it is locally constant, or if it admits invariant holonomies and is pinching and twisting, we show that the measure of points that do not return a linear number of times to Pesin sets is exponentially small. We discuss applications to the exponential mixing of contact Anosov flows, and counterexamples illustrating the necessi…
We consider Holder continuous fiber bunched GL(d,R)-valued cocycles over an Anosov diffeomorphism. We show that two such cocycles are Holder continuously cohomologous if they have equal periodic data, and prove a result for cocycles with conjugate periodic data. We obtain a corollary for cohomology between any constant cocycle and its small perturbation. The fiber bunching condition means that non-conformality of the cocycle is dominated by the expansion and contraction in the base. We show that this condition can be established based on the periodic data. Some important examples of cocycles c…
The celebrated Livsic theorem states that given M a manifold, a Lie group G, a transitive Anosov diffeomorphism f on M and a Holder function η: M \mapsto G whose range is sufficiently close to the identity, it is sufficient for the existence of ϕ:M \mapsto G satisfying η(x) = ϕ(f(x)) ϕ(x)^{-1} that a condition -- obviously necessary -- on the cocycle generated by ηrestricted to periodic orbits is satisfied. In this paper we present a new proof of the main result. These methods allow us to treat cocycles taking values in the group of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold. This has applications …
In the first part of this dissertation, we give a new definition of a Laplace operator for Finsler metric as an average, with regard to an angle measure, of the second directional derivatives. This operator is elliptic, symmetric with respect to the Holmes-Thompson volume, and coincides with the usual Laplace--Beltrami operator when the Finsler metric is Riemannian. We compute explicit spectral data for some Katok-Ziller metrics. When the Finsler metric is negatively curved, we show, thanks to a result of Ancona that the Martin boundary is Hölder-homeomorphic to the visual boundary. This allow…
In this paper we study Holder continuous linear cocycles over transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Under various conditions of relative pinching we establish properties including existence and continuity of measurable invariant sub-bundles and conformal structures. We use these results to obtain criteria for cocycles to be isometric or conformal in terms of their periodic data. We show that if the return maps at the periodic points are, in a sense, conformal or isometric then so is the cocycle itself with respect to a Holder continuous Riemannian metric.
We prove that for semi-invertible and Hölder continuous linear cocycles $A$ acting on an arbitrary Banach space and defined over a base space that satisfies the Anosov Closing Property, all exceptional Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to an ergodic invariant measure for base dynamics can be approximated with Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to ergodic measures supported on periodic orbits. Our result is applicable to a wide class of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems.
We prove global smooth classification results for TNS totally Anosov Z^k actions on general compact manifolds, under each one of the following conditions: joint integrability, resonance-free or Lyapunov pinching condition. Unlike the previous results, we do not require any uniform quasiconformality or pinching condition of action elements on coarse Lyapunov distributions, nor do we have any restriction on the dimension of coarse Lyapunov distributions. The main novelty is in proving a new standard form of the derivative cocycle for any TNS totally Anosov Z^k action on general manifold. A main …
We prove the Livšic Theorem for Hölder continuous cocycles with values in Banach rings. We consider a transitive homeomorphism ${σ:X\to X}$ that satisfies the Anosov Closing Lemma, and a Hölder continuous map ${a:X\to B^\times}$ from a compact metric space $X$ to the set of invertible elements of some Banach ring $B$. We show that it is a coboundary with a Hölder continuous transition function if and only if ${a(σ^{n-1}p)\ldots a(σp)a(p)=e}$ for each periodic point $p=σ^n p$.
