This paper is concerned with the inverse random source problem for a stochastic time fractional diffusion equation, where the source is assumed to be driven by a Gaussian random field. The direct problem is shown to be well-posed by examining the well-posedness and regularity of the solution for the equivalent stochastic two-point boundary value problem in the frequency domain. For the inverse problem, the Fourier modulus of the diffusion coefficient of the random source is proved to be uniquely determined by the variance of the Fourier transform of the boundary data. As a phase retrieval for the inverse problem, the PhaseLift method with random masks is applied to recover the diffusion coefficient from its Fourier modulus. Numerical experiments are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
In this paper we consider the inverse problem of identifying the initial data in a fractionally damped wave equation from time trace measurements on a surface, as relevant in photoacoustic or thermoacoustic tomography. We derive and analyze a time stepping method for the numerical solution of the corresponding forward problem. Moreover, to efficiently obtain reconstructions by minimizing a Tikhonov regularization functional (or alternatively, by computing the MAP estimator in a Bayesian approach), we develop an adjoint based scheme for gradient computation. Numerical reconstructions in two spa…
This article deals with an inverse problem of identifying the fractional order in the 1D time fractional diffusion equation (TFDE in short) using the measurement at one space-time point. Based on the expression of the solution to the forward problem, the inverse problem is transformed to a nonlinear algebraic equation. By choosing suitable initial values and the measured point, the nonlinear equation has a unique solution by the monotonicity of the Mittag-Lellfer function. Theoretical testifications are presented to demonstrate the unique solvability of the inverse problem.

A fractal mobile-immobile (MIM in short) solute transport model in porous media is set forth, and an inverse problem of determining the fractional orders by the additional measurements at one interior point is investigated by Laplace transform. The unique existence of the solution to the forward problem is obtained based on the inverse Laplace transform, and the uniqueness of the inverse problem is proved in the real-space of Laplace transform by the maximum principle, and numerical inversions with noisy data are presented to demonstrate a numerical stability of the inverse problem.
This paper considers the temporal discretization of an inverse problem subject to a time fractional diffusion equation. Firstly, the convergence of the L1 scheme is established with an arbitrary sectorial operator of spectral angle $< π/2 $, that is the resolvent set of this operator contains $ \{z\in\mathbb C\setminus\{0\}:\ |\operatorname{Arg} z|< θ\}$ for some $ π/2 < θ< π$. The relationship between the time fractional order $α\in (0, 1)$ and the constants in the error estimates is precisely characterized, revealing that the L1 scheme is robust as $ α$ approaches $ 1 $. Then an inverse prob…
This paper considers the attenuated Westervelt equation in pressure formulation. The attenuation is by various models proposed in the literature and characterised by the inclusion of non-local operators that give power law damping as opposed to the exponential of classical models. The goal is the inverse problem of recovering a spatially dependent coefficient in the equation, the parameter of nonlinearity $κ(x)$, in what becomes a nonlinear hyperbolic equation with nonlocal terms. The overposed measured data is a time trace taken on a subset of the domain or its boundary. We shall show injecti…
We study the inverse random source problem for the time-space fractional diffusion equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$. With the aid of a novel estimate, by using the operator approach we propose regularity analyses for the direct problem. Then we provide a reconstruction scheme for the source terms $f$ and $g$ up to the sign. Next, combining the properties of Mittag-Leffler function, the complete uniqueness and instability analyses are provided. It's worth mentioning that all the analyses are unified for $H\in(0,1)$.
Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) show great advantages in solving partial differential equations. In this paper, we for the first time propose to study conformable time fractional diffusion equations by using PINNs. By solving the supervise learning task, we design a new spatio-temporal function approximator with high data efficiency. L-BFGS algorithm is used to optimize our loss function, and back propagation algorithm is used to update our parameters to give our numerical solutions. For the forward problem, we can take IC/BCs as the data, and use PINN to solve the corresponding parti…
In this paper, we consider the prediction of the helium concentrations as function of a spatially variable source term perturbed by fractional Brownian motion. For the direct problem, we show that it is well-posed and has a unique mild solution under some conditions. For the inverse problem, the uniqueness and the instability are given. In the meanwhile, we determine the statistical properties of the source from the expectation and covariance of the final-time data u(r,T). Finally, numerical implements are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed reconstruction.
In this paper, we investigate the imaging inverse problem by employing an infinite-dimensional Bayesian inference method with a general fractional total variation-Gaussian (GFTG) prior. This novel hybrid prior is a development for the total variation-Gaussian (TG) prior and the non-local total variation-Gaussian (NLTG) prior, which is a combination of the Gaussian prior and a general fractional total variation regularization term, which contains a wide class of fractional derivative. Compared to the TG prior, the GFTG prior can effectively reduce the staircase effect, enhance the texture detai…

We introduce a sampling based machine learning approach, Monte Carlo physics informed neural networks (MC-PINNs), for solving forward and inverse fractional partial differential equations (FPDEs). As a generalization of physics informed neural networks (PINNs), our method relies on deep neural network surrogates in addition to a stochastic approximation strategy for computing the fractional derivatives of the DNN outputs. A key ingredient in our MC-PINNs is to construct an unbiased estimation of the physical soft constraints in the loss function. Our directly sampling approach can yield less o…

Fractional diffusion equations have been an effective tool for modeling anomalous diffusion in complicated systems. However, traditional numerical methods require expensive computation cost and storage resources because of the memory effect brought by the convolution integral of time fractional derivative. We propose a Bayesian Inversion with Neural Operator (BINO) to overcome the difficulty in traditional methods as follows. We employ a deep operator network to learn the solution operators for the fractional diffusion equations, allowing us to swiftly and precisely solve a forward problem for…
