Teukolsky equations for $|s|=2$ provide efficient ways to solve for curvature perturbations around Kerr black holes. Imposing regularity conditions on these perturbations on the future (past) horizon corresponds to imposing an in-going (out-going) wave boundary condition. For exotic compact objects (ECOs) with external Kerr spacetime, however, it is not yet clear how to physically impose boundary conditions for curvature perturbations on their boundaries. We address this problem using the Membrane Paradigm, by considering a family of fiducial observers (FIDOs) that float right above the horizon of a linearly perturbed Kerr black hole. From the reference frame of these observers, the ECO will experience tidal perturbations due to in-going gravitational waves, respond to these waves, and generate out-going waves. As it also turns out, if both in-going and out-going waves exist near the horizon, the Newman Penrose (NP) quantity $ψ_0$ will be numerically dominated by the in-going wave, while the NP quantity $ψ_4$ will be dominated by the out-going wave. In this way, we obtain the ECO boundary condition in the form of a relation between $ψ_0$ and the complex conjugate of $ψ_4$, in a way that is determined by the ECO's tidal response in the FIDO frame. We explore several ways to modify gravitational-wave dispersion in the FIDO frame, and deduce the corresponding ECO boundary condition for Teukolsky functions. We subsequently obtain the boundary condition for $ψ_4$ alone, as well as for the Sasaki-Nakamura and Detweiler's functions. As it also turns out, reflection of spinning ECOs will generically mix between different $\ell$ components of the perturbations fields, and be different for perturbations with different parities. We also apply our boundary condition to computing gravitational-wave echoes from spinning ECOs, and solve for the spinning ECOs' quasi-normal modes.
The coupling between the angular momentum of a compact object and an external tidal field gives rise to the "rotational" tidal Love numbers, which affect the tidal deformability of a spinning self-gravitating body and enter the gravitational waveform of a binary inspiral at high post-Newtonian order. We provide numerical evidence for a surprising "hidden" symmetry among the rotational tidal Love numbers with opposite parities, which are associated to perturbations belonging to separate sectors. This symmetry, whose existence had been suggested on the basis of a Lagrangian description of the ti…
The open question of whether a black hole can become tidally deformed by an external gravitational field has profound implications for fundamental physics, astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. Love tensors characterize the tidal deformability of compact objects such as astrophysical (Kerr) black holes under an external static tidal field. We prove that all Love tensors vanish identically for a Kerr black hole in the nonspinning limit or for an axisymmetric tidal perturbation. In contrast to this result, we show that Love tensors are generically nonzero for a spinning black hole. Spec…
Recent study shows that the magnetic reconnection can serve as an efficient mechanism to extract energy from rapidly spinning black holes. In this paper, we consider the effects of the tidal charge on the energy extraction via the magnetic reconnection in the backgrounds of a spinning braneworld black hole. With the increase of the tidal charge, we find that both the energies of the accelerated plasma and decelerated plasma decrease for the observer located at infinity. To achieve the purpose extracting the net energy from the black hole, the decelerated plasma should take negative energy. The…
Horizonless spacetimes describing highly compact exotic objects with reflecting (instead of absorbing) surfaces have recently attracted much attention from physicists and mathematicians as possible quantum-gravity alternatives to canonical classical black-hole spacetimes. Interestingly, it has recently been proved that spinning compact objects with angular momenta in the sub-critical regime ${\bar a}\equiv J/M^2\leq1$ are characterized by an infinite countable set of surface radii, $\{r_{\text{c}}({\bar a};n)\}^{n=\infty}_{n=1}$, that can support asymptotically flat static configurations made …
Some quantum-gravity theories suggest that the absorbing horizon of a classical black hole should be replaced by a reflective surface which is located a microscopic distance above the would-be classical horizon. Instead of an absorbing black hole, the resulting horizonless spacetime describes a reflective exotic compact object. Motivated by this intriguing prediction, in the present paper we explore the physical properties of exotic compact objects which are linearly coupled to stationary bound-state massive scalar field configurations. In particular, solving the Klein-Gordon wave equation for…
We compute gravitational self-force corrections to tidal invariants for spinning particles moving along circular orbits in a Schwarzschild spacetime. In particular, we consider the square and the cube of the gravitoelectric quadrupolar tidal tensor and the square of the gravitomagnetic quadrupolar tidal tensor. Our results are accurate to first-order in spin and through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order. We also compute the associated electric-type and magnetic-type eigenvalues.
By extending our recent framework to describe the tidal deformations of a spinning compact object, we compute for the first time the tidal Love numbers of a spinning neutron star to linear order in the angular momentum. The spin of the object introduces couplings between electric and magnetic distortions and new classes of spin-induced ("rotational") tidal Love numbers emerge. We focus on stationary tidal fields, which induce axisymmetric perturbations. We present the perturbation equations for both electric-led and magnetic-led rotational Love numbers for generic multipoles and explicitly sol…
Expanding on the recent derivation of tidal actions for scalar particles, we present here the action for a tidally deformed spin-$1/2$ particle. Focusing on operators containing two powers of the Weyl tensor, we combine the Hilbert series with an on-shell amplitude basis to construct the tidal action. With the tidal action in hand, we compute the leading-post-Minkowskian tidal contributions to the spin-1/2 -- spin-1/2 amplitude, arising at $\mathcal{O}(G^{2})$. Our amplitudes provide evidence that the observed long range spin-universality for the scattering of two point particles extends to th…
The open question of whether a Kerr black hole can become tidally deformed or not has profound implications for fundamental physics and gravitational-wave astronomy. We consider a Kerr black hole embedded in a weak and slowly varying, but otherwise arbitrary, multipolar tidal environment. By solving the static Teukolsky equation for the gauge-invariant Weyl scalar $ψ_0$, and by reconstructing the corresponding metric perturbation in an ingoing radiation gauge, for a general harmonic index $\ell$, we compute the linear response of a Kerr black hole to the tidal field. This linear response vanis…
The deformability of a compact object induced by a perturbing tidal field is encoded in the tidal Love numbers, which depend sensibly on the object's internal structure. These numbers are known only for static, spherically-symmetric objects. As a first step to compute the tidal Love numbers of a spinning compact star, here we extend powerful perturbative techniques to compute the exterior geometry of a spinning object distorted by an axisymmetric tidal field to second order in the angular momentum. The spin of the object introduces couplings between electric and magnetic deformations and new c…
Exotic compact objects, horizonless spacetimes with reflective properties, have intriguingly been suggested by some quantum-gravity models as alternatives to classical black-hole spacetimes. A remarkable feature of spinning horizonless compact objects with reflective boundary conditions is the existence of a {\it discrete} set of critical surface radii, $\{r_{\text{c}}({\bar a};n)\}^{n=\infty}_{n=1}$, which can support spatially regular static ({\it marginally-stable}) scalar field configurations (here ${\bar a}\equiv J/M^2$ is the dimensionless angular momentum of the exotic compact object). …
We study the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a spinning test particle moving in the vicinity of an axially symmetric rotating braneworld black hole (BH). We start with the description of the event horizon, static limit surface and ergosphere region of such BH and bring out the effect of tidal charge parameter on ergosphere. It is found that the ISCO of rotating braneworld BH is very sensitive to braneworld BH parameter C (also known as tidal charge parameter) in addition to its rotation parameter. We further discovered that the orbital radius of the spinning test particles changes no…
We study the tidal deformations of the shape of a spinning black hole horizon due to a binary companion in the Bowen-York initial data set. We use the framework of quasi-local horizons and identify a black hole by marginally outer trapped surfaces. The intrinsic horizon geometry is specified by a set of mass and angular-momentum multipole moments $\mathcal{M}_n$ and $\mathcal{J}_n$ respectively. The tidal deformations are described by the change in these multipole moments caused by an external perturbation. This leads us to define two sets of dimensionless numbers, the tidal coefficients for $…
During the early phase of in-spiral of a binary system, the tidal heating of a compact object due to its companion plays a significant role in the determination of the orbital evolution of the binary. The phenomenon depends crucially on the `hairs', as well as on the nature of the compact object. It turns out that the presence of extra dimension affects both these properties, by incorporating an extra tidal charge for braneworld black holes and also by introducing quantum effects, leading to possible existence of exotic compact objects. It turns out that the phasing information from tidal heat…
We develop a description of tidal effects in astrophysical systems using effective field theory techniques. While our approach is equally capable of describing objects in the Newtonian regime (e.g. moons, rocky planets, main sequence stars, etc.) as well as relativistic objects (e.g. neutron stars and black holes), in this paper we focus special attention on the Newtonian regime. In this limit, we recover the dynamical equations for the "weak friction model" with additional corrections due to tidal and rotational deformations.
A supermassive black hole can disrupt a star when its tidal field exceeds the star's self-gravity, and can directly capture stars that cross its event horizon. For black holes with mass M > 10^7 solar masses, tidal disruption of main-sequence stars occurs close enough to the event horizon that a Newtonian treatment of the tidal field is no longer valid. The fraction of stars that are directly captured is also no longer negligible. We calculate generically oriented stellar orbits in the Kerr metric, and evaluate the relativistic tidal tensor at pericenter for those stars not directly captured b…
We present numerical relativity results of tidal disruptions of white dwarfs from ultra-close encounters with a spinning, intermediate mass black hole. These encounters require a full general relativistic treatment of gravity. We show that the disruption process and prompt accretion of the debris strongly depend on the magnitude and orientation of the black hole spin. However, the late-time accretion onto the black hole follows the same decay, $\dot{M}$ ~ t^{-5/3}, estimated from Newtonian gravity disruption studies. We compute the spectrum of the disk formed from the fallback material using a…
We explicitly construct the metric of a Kerr black hole that is tidally perturbed by the external universe in the slow-motion approximation. This approximation assumes that the external universe changes slowly relative to the rotation rate of the hole, thus allowing the parameterization of the Newman-Penrose scalar $ψ_0$ by time-dependent electric and magnetic tidal tensors. This approximation, however, does not constrain how big the spin of the background hole can be and, in principle, the perturbed metric can model rapidly spinning holes. We first generate a potential by acting with a differ…
We report exotic orbital phenomena of spinning test particles orbiting around a Kerr black hole, i.e., some orbits of spinning particles are asymmetrical about the equatorial plane. When a nonspinning test particle orbits around a Kerr black hole in a strong field region, due to relativistic orbital precessions, the pattern of trajectories is symmetrical about the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole. However, the patterns of the spinning particles' orbit are no longer symmetrical about the equatorial plane for some orbital configurations and large spins. We argue that these asymmetrical pa…
Tidal effects have important imprints on gravitational waves (GWs) emitted during the final stage of the coalescence of binaries that involve neutron stars (NSs). Dynamical tides can be significant when NS oscillations become resonant with orbital motion; understanding this process is important for accurately modeling GW emission from these binaries, and for extracting NS information from GW data. In this paper, we carry out a systematic study on the tidal excitation of fundamental modes of spinning NSs in coalescencing binaries, focusing on the case when the NS spin is anti-aligned with the o…
The excitation of $f$-mode in a neutron star member of coalescing binaries accelerates the merger course, and thereby introduces a phase shift in the gravitational waveform. Emphasising on the tidal phase shift by aligned, rotating stars, we provide an accurate, yet economical, method to generate $f$-mode-involved, pre-merger waveforms using realistic spin-modulated $f$-mode frequencies for some viable equations of state. We find for slow-rotating stars that the dephasing effects of the dynamical tides can be uniquely, EOS-independently determined by the direct observables (chirp mass ${\cal M…
We present numerical waveforms of gravitational-wave echoes from spinning exotic compact objects (ECOs) that result from binary black hole coalescence. We obtain these echoes by solving the Teukolsky equation for the $ψ_4$ associated with gravitational waves that propagate toward the horizon of a Kerr spacetime, and process the subsequent reflections of the horizon-going wave by the surface of the ECO, which lies right above the Kerr horizon. The trajectories of the infalling objects are modified from Kerr geodesics, such that the gravitational waves propagating toward future null infinity mat…
There is a growing interest in investigating modified theories of gravity, primarily, with the aim of explaining the universe's accelerated expansion, which has been confirmed by several independent observations. Compact objects, like neutron stars, exhibit strong gravity effects and therefore are used to study modified gravity theories. We use the $f(R)=R+aR^2$ model, where R is the Ricci scalar and $a$ is a free parameter. This model has been studied both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. However, it was found that perturbative methods results in nonphysical solutions for the neutron st…
General relativistic effects in the spacetime around the massive astrophysical objects can be captured using a spinning test gyro orbiting around the object in a circular geodesic. This article discusses how the tidal disruption due to a companion object affects the precession frequency of a spinning gyro orbiting around a compact astrophysical object. The precession frequency is studied in a region of space around the central object using a perturbative approach. In this study, the central object is either a neutron star or a white dwarf. The gyro is any planetary or asteroid-like object orbi…
In this paper we include spin and multipole moment effects in the formalism used to describe the motion of extended objects recently introduced in hep-th/0409156. A suitable description for spinning bodies is developed and spin-orbit, spin-spin and quadrupole-spin Hamiltonians are found at leading order. The existence of tidal, as well as self induced finite size effects is shown, and the contribution to the Hamiltonian is calculated in the latter. It is shown that tidal deformations start formally at O(v^6) and O(v^10) for maximally rotating general and compact objects respectively, whereas s…
We study the merger of black hole (BH)-neutron star (NS) binaries with a variety of BH spins aligned or anti-aligned with the orbital angular momentum, and with the mass ratio in the range MBH/MNS = 2--5, where MBH and MNS are the mass of the BH and NS, respectively. We model NS matter by systematically parametrized piecewise polytropic equations of state. The initial condition is computed in the puncture framework adopting an isolated horizon framework to estimate the BH spin and assuming an irrotational velocity field for the fluid inside the NS. Dynamical simulations are performed in full g…
We compare the rigorous equations describing the motion of spinning test particles in gravitational and electromagnetic fields, and show that if the Mathisson-Pirani spin condition holds then exact gravito-electromagnetic analogies emerge. These analogies provide a familiar formalism to treat gravitational problems, as well as a means for comparing the two interactions. Fundamental differences are manifest in the symmetries and time projections of the electromagnetic and gravitational tidal tensors. The physical consequences of the symmetries of the tidal tensors are explored comparing the fol…
In the context of higher dimensional braneworld scenario, we have argued that the occurrence of horizonless exotic compact objects, as an alternative to classical black holes, are more natural. These exotic compact objects carry a distinctive signature of the higher dimension, namely a tidal charge parameter, inherited from the projection of the higher dimensional Weyl tensor onto the four dimensional spacetime we live in. Due to the absence of any horizon, rotating exotic compact objects are often unstable because of superradiance. Interestingly, these higher dimensional exotic compact object…
This paper investigates the various spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in the presence of tidal forces and applies numerous methods, such as test particle orbital dynamics, ray-tracing and microlensing. We make the theoretical predictions on the test particle orbital motion around the tidal wormholes with the use of normalized by $\mathcal{L}^2$ effective potential. In order to obtain the ray-tracing images (of both geometrically thin and thick accretion disks, relativistic jets), we properly modify the open source $\texttt{GYOTO}$ code with python interface. We applied this techniques t…
The defining feature of a classical black hole is being a perfect absorber. Any evidence showing otherwise would indicate a departure from the standard black-hole picture. Energy and angular momentum absorption by the horizon of a black hole is responsible for tidal heating in a binary. This effect is particularly important in the latest stages of an extreme mass ratio inspiral around a spinning supermassive object, one of the main targets of the future LISA mission. We study how this effect can be used to probe the nature of supermassive objects in a model independent way. We compute the orbi…
Gravitational-wave echoes in the post-merger signal of a binary coalescence are predicted in various scenarios, including near-horizon quantum structures, exotic states of matter in ultracompact stars, and certain deviations from general relativity. The amplitude and frequency of each echo is modulated by the photon-sphere barrier of the remnant, which acts as a spin- and frequency-dependent high-pass filter, decreasing the frequency content of each subsequent echo. Furthermore, a major fraction of the energy of the echo signal is contained in low-frequency resonances corresponding to the quas…
The characteristic difference between a black hole and other exotic compact objects (ECOs) is the presence of the horizon. The horizon of a classical black hole acts as a one-way membrane. Due to this nature, any perturbation on the black hole must satisfy ingoing boundary conditions at the horizon. For an ECO either the horizon is replaced or modified with a surface with non zero reflectivity. This results in a modification of the boundary condition of the perturbation around such systems. In this work, we study how tidal heating of an ECO gets modified due to the presence of a reflective sur…
Building upon the Noether charge formalism of Iyer and Wald, we derive a variational formula for spacetimes admitting a Killing vector field, for a generic energy-momentum distribution with compact support. Applying this general result to the particular case of a binary system of spinning compact objects moving along an exactly circular orbit, modelled using the multipolar gravitational skeleton formalism, we derive a first law of compact binary mechanics at dipolar order. We prove the equivalence of this new result with the canonical Hamiltonian first law previously derived for binary systems…
In previous works, we obtained the leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading (NNL) post-Newtonian (PN) corrections in the conservative tidal interactions between two compact non-spinning objects using a Lagrangian of effective field theory (EFT) in harmonic coordinates. In the present paper, we compute the corresponding NNL PN tidal effective Hamiltonian in ADM-like and isotropic coordinates, with contributions from mass quadrupole, current quadrupole and mass octupole tidal interactions, consistently included at that level. We also derive the NNL tidal Hamiltonian in Delaunay varia…
The moment of inertia, the spin-induced quadrupole moment, and the tidal Love number of neutron-star and quark-star models are related through some relations which depend only mildly on the stellar equation of state. These "I-Love-Q" relations have important implications for astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy. An interesting problem is whether similar relations hold for other compact objects and how they approach the black-hole limit. To answer these questions, here we investigate the deformation properties of a large class of thin-shell gravastars, which are exotic compact objects …
Several quantum-gravity models of compact objects predict microscopic or even Planckian corrections at the horizon scale. We explore the possibility of measuring two model-independent, smoking-gun effects of these corrections in the gravitational waveform of a compact binary, namely the absence of tidal heating and the presence of tidal deformability. For events detectable by the future space-based interferometer LISA, we show that the effect of tidal heating dominates and allows one to constrain putative corrections down to the Planck scale. The measurement of the tidal Love numbers with LISA…
Using conformal field theory and localization tecniques we study the propagation of waves in gravity backgrounds described by Schrödinger like equations with Fuchsian singularities. Exact formulae for the connection matrices relating the asymptotic behaviour of the wave functions near the singularities are obtained in terms of braiding and fusion rules of the CFT. The results are applied to the study of quasi normal modes, absorption cross sections, amplification factors, echoes and tidal responses of black holes (BH) and exotic compact objects (ECO) in four and five dimensions. In particular,…
