Optically resonant dielectric metasurfaces offer unique capability to fully control the wavefront, polarisation, intensity or spectral content of light based on the excitation and interference of different electric and magnetic Mie multipolar resonances. Recent advances of the wide accessibility in the nanofabrication and nanotechnologies have led to a surge in the research field of high-quality functional optical metasurfaces which can potentially replace or even outperform conventional optical components with ultra-thin feature. Replacing conventional optical filtering components with metasurface technology offers remarkable advantages including lower integration cost, ultra-thin compact configuration, easy combination with multiple functions and less restriction on materials. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a planar narrow-band-pass filter based on the optical dielectric metasurface composed of Si nanoresonators in array. A broadband transmission spectral valley (around 200~nm) has been realised by combining electric and magnetic dipole resonances adjacent to each other. Meanwhile, we obtain a narrow-band transmission peak by exciting a high-quality leaky mode which is formed by partially breaking a bound state in the continuum generated by the collective longitudinal magnetic dipole resonances in the metasurface. Our proposed metasurface-based filter shows a stable performance for oblique light incidence with small angles (within 10 deg). Our work imply many potential applications of nanoscale photonics devices such as displays, spectroscopy, etc.

Here, we experimentally demonstrate a polarization insensitive holographic Huygens' metasurface based on dielectric resonant meta-atoms capable of complex wavefront control at telecom wavelengths. Our metasurface p…
Resonant metasurfaces have received extensive attention due to their sharp spectral feature and extraordinary field enhancement. In this work, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of silicon nanopillars, we achieve a sharp Fano resonance. The far-field radiation and near-field distribution of metasurfaces are calculated and analyzed to further uncover the resonant performance of metasurfaces. Moreover, the theoretical derivation and simulation exhibit an inverse quadratic dependence of Q-factors on asymmetry parameters, revealing that the resonance is governed by the symmetry-protected bound stat…
We theoretically demonstrate mechanical tuning of the spectral response of a Mie-like resonant dielectric metasurface consisting of crossed all-dielectric strip gratings. We use two array of parallel dielectric strips superimposed on each other to mechanically alter the crossing angle between them thereby changing the position of the maximum of the spectral response in a wide frequency range. The metasurface structure is considered as a doubly-periodic system in an oblique mesh. This mechanically controllable metasurface can be perspective in developing of a flexible polarization-sensitive opt…
We demonstrate how to create all-dielectric metasurfaces with a strong toroidal response by arranging two types of nanodisks into asymmetric quadrumer clusters. We demonstrate that a strong axial toroidal response of the metasurface is related to conditions of the trapped (dark) mode that is excited due the symmetry breaking in the cluster. We study the correlation between the toroidal response and asymmetry in the metasurface and nanocluster geometries, which appears from the different diameters of nanodisks or notches introduced into the nanodisks.
Fano resonance has raised great attention in nanophotonics attributing to its unique properties. In this work, we study the imaging function of Fano-resonant silicon metasurfece governed by quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs). First, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of nanodisks, a symmetry-protected quasi-BIC is excited with the emergence of a sharp Fano resonance. The near field distributions, multipole contributions and radiation patterns of the metasurface are performed to uncover the mechanism and characteristics of this resonance. In addition, we investigate the imaging function o…
Resonant metasurfaces are devices composed of nanostructured sub-wavelength scatterers that generate narrow optical resonances, enabling applications in filtering, nonlinear optics, and molecular fingerprinting. It is highly desirable for these applications to incorporate such devices with multiple, high-quality-factor resonances; however, it can be challenging to obtain more than a pair of narrow resonances in a single plasmonic surface. Here, we demonstrate a multi-resonant metasurface that operates by extending the functionality of surface lattice resonances, which are the collective respon…
Nonlinear metamaterials show potential for realizing flat nonlinear optical devices but generally lack in terms of achievable conversion efficiencies. Recent work has focused on enhancing nonlinear processes by utilizing high quality factor resonances, such as collective responses known as surface lattice resonances (SLRs) taking place in periodic metal nanoparticle arrays. Here, we investigate how the dispersive nature of SLRs affects the nonlinear responses of SLR-supporting metasurfaces. Particularly, we measure second-harmonic generation from aluminum nanoparticle arrays and demonstrate th…

A highly efficient wave plate is one example of such an application. In combination with high spectral selectivity and strong optical energy concentration, such phase plates are desirable for precision sensing and high efficiency nonlinear optics. We propose a novel approach to realizing such ultra-thin optical plates: an anisotropic…
Nonlinear metasurfaces have become prominent tools for controlling and engineering light at the nanoscale. Usually, the polarization of the total generated third harmonic is studied. However, diffraction orders may present different polarizations. Here, we design an high quality factor silicon metasurface for third harmonic generation and perform back focal plane imaging of the diffraction orders, which present a rich variety of polarization states. Our results demonstrate the possibility of tailoring the polarization of the generated nonlinear diffraction orders paving the way to a higher deg…
In this letter, a new approach to perform edge detection is presented using an all-dielectric CMOS-compatible metasurface. The design is based on guided-mode resonance which provides a high quality factor resonance to make the edge detection experimentally realizable. The proposed structure that is easy to fabricate, can be exploited for detection of edges in two dimensions due to its symmetry. Also, the trade-off between gain and resolution of edge detection is discussed which can be adjusted by appropriate design parameters. The proposed edge detector has also the potential to be used in ult…

In this paper we suggest a simple analytical method for description of electromagnetic properties of a geometrically regular two-dimensional subwavelength arrays (metasurfaces) formed by particles with randomly fluctuating polarizabilities. Such metasurfaces are of topical importance due to development of mass-scale bottom-up fabrication methods, for which fluctuations of the particles sizes, shapes, and/or composition are inevitable. Understanding and prediction of electromagnetic properties of such random metasurfaces is a challenge. We propose an analytical homogenization method applicable …
Optical metasurfaces have great potential to form the platform for manipulation of surface waves. A plethora of advanced surface-wave phenomena utilizing negative refraction, self-collimation and channeling of 2D waves can be realized through on-demand engineering of dispersion properties of a periodic metasurface. In this letter, we report on the first-time direct experimental polarization-resolved measurement of dispersion of 2D optical plasmons supported by an anisotropic metasurface. We demonstrate that a subdiffractive array of strongly coupled resonant anisotropic plasmonic nanoparticles…
Photonic devices rarely provide both elaborate spatial control and sharp spectral control over an incoming wavefront. In optical metasurfaces, for example, the localized modes of individual meta-units govern the wavefront shape over a broad bandwidth, while nonlocal lattice modes extended over many unit cells support high quality-factor resonances. Here, we experimentally demonstrate nonlocal dielectric metasurfaces in the near-infrared that offer both spatial and spectral control of light, realizing metalenses focusing light exclusively over a narrowband resonance while leaving off-resonant f…
We develop a method to control the group delay of electromagnetic waves continuously using a doubly resonant metasurface. The method is based on the dependences of i) the group velocity in a medium featuring two resonance lines on the resonance linewidths and ii) the resonance linewidth of a metasurface composed of split-ring resonators on an incidence angle of electromagnetic wave. To verify this method for group-delay control, we design a terahertz metasurface composed of two split-ring resonators with different resonance frequencies and numerically analyze the transmission characteristic of…
Optical embedded eigenstates are localized modes of an open structure that are compatible to radiation yet they have infinite lifetime and diverging quality factors. Their realization in nanostructures finite in all dimensions is inherently challenging, because they require materials with extreme electromagnetic properties. Here we develop a novel approach to realize these bound states in the continuum using ultrathin metasurfaces composed of arrays of nanoparticles. We first show that arrays of lossless nanoparticles can realize the condition for embedded eigenstates, and then explore the use…
Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a coherent nonlinear phenomenon that plays an important role in laser color conversion. Lithium niobate (LN), which features both a large band gap and outstanding second-order nonlinearities, acts as an important optical material for nonlinear frequency conversion covering a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared. Here we experimentally demonstrate LN metasurfaces with controllable SHG properties. Distinct enhancements for the SHG efficiency are observed at Mie-resonances. And by changing the geometric parameters thus the resonances of the meta…
To achieve efficient light control at subwavelength dimensions, plasmonic and all-dielectric nanoparticles have been utilized both as a single element as well as in the arrays. Here we study 2D periodic nanoparticle arrays (metasurfaces) that support lattice resonances near the Rayleigh anomaly due to the electric dipole (ED) and magnetic dipole (MD) resonant coupling between the nanoparticles. Silicon and core-shell particles are considered. We demonstrate for the first time that, choosing of lattice periods independently in each mutual-perpendicular direction, it is possible to achieve a ful…
Common optical metasurfaces are 2-dimensional functional devices composed of periodically arranged subwavelength constituents. Here, we achieved the positional-disorder-immune metasurfaces composed of core-shell cylinders which successively exhibit the magnetic dipole (MD) resonant, non-radiating anapole, and electric dipole (ED) resonant modes when their outer radii are fixed and the inner radii changes continuously in a range. The performances of the metasurfaces under a periodically structural design are not degraded even when the positions of the cylinders are subjected to random and consi…
Based on an analytic approach, we present a theoretical review on the absorption, scattering, and extinction of both dipole scatterers and regular arrays composed of such scatterers i.e., metasurfaces. Besides offering a tutorial by outlining the maximum absorption limit for electrically/magnetically resonant dipole particles/metasurfaces, we give an educative analytical approach to their analysis. Moreover, we put forward the analysis of two known alternatives in providing perfect absorbers out of electrically and or magnetically resonant metasurfaces; one is based on the simultaneous presenc…
All-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of arrays of nanostructured high-refractive-index materials, typically Si, are re-writing what is achievable in terms of the manipulation of light. Such devices support very strong magnetic, as well as electric, resonances, and are free of ohmic losses that severely limit the performance of their plasmonic counterparts. However, the functionality of dielectric-based metasurfaces is fixed-by-design, i.e. the optical response is fixed by the size, arrangement and index of the nanoresonators. A far wider range of applications could be addressed if active/rec…
Effective refractive index of disordered all-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of gallium phosphide (GaP) spheres is studied by means of three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations at the wavelength of 532~nm. It is shown that a mixture of the high index nanoparticles with sizes close to the first magnetic and electric resonances randomly dispersed on metasurface may possess negative refraction. The dependence of the metasurface effective refractive index on the nanoparticle concentration and size is constructed. The feasibility of negative refraction at large concentra…
Nonlinear optical phenomena in nanostructured materials have been challenging our perceptions of nonlinear optical processes that have been explored since the invention of lasers. For example, the ability to control optical field confinement, enhancement, and scattering almost independently, allows nonlinear frequency conversion efficiencies to be enhanced by many orders of magnitude compared to bulk materials. Also, the subwavelength length scale renders phase matching issues irrelevant. Compared with plasmonic nanostructures, dielectric resonator metamaterials show great promise for enhanced…

Resonant lattice Kerker effect in periodic resonators is one of the most interesting generalizations of the Kerker effect that relates to various fascinating functionalities such as scattering management and Huygens metasurfaces. However, so far this effect has been shown to be sensitive to the incident polarization, restricting its applications. Here, we report, for the first time, polarization-independent resonant lattice Kerker effect in metasurfaces composed of periodic Ge$_2$Se$_2$Te$_5$ (GST) disks. For such a metasurface of square lattice, the spectrally overlap of the electric dipole a…
All-dielectric resonant nanophotonics lies at the heart of modern optics and nanotechnology due to the unique possibilities to control scattering of light from high-index dielectric nanoparticles and metasurfaces. One of the important concepts of dielectric Mie-resonant nanophotonics is associated with the Kerker effect that drives the unidirectional scattering of light from nanoantennas and Huygens' metasurfaces. Here we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a novel effect manifested in the nearly complete simultaneous suppression of both forward and backward scattered fields. This effect is…
The optical Kerr effect of material with negative refraction is estimated for the first time. This is done via three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations of disordered bidisperse metasurfaces consisting of high index (GaP) spheres at the wavelength of 532~nm. The metasurfaces comprise spherical particles randomly arranged on plane having two sizes close to the magnetic and electric dipole Mie resonances. The real part of the effective nonlinear refractive index of the metasurfaces is computed in the vicinity of the Mie resonances where the metasurface possesses the nega…
In this paper, we use a versatile homogenization approach to model the linear and nonlinear optical response of two metasurfaces: a plasmonic metasurface consisting of a square array of graphene cruciform patches and a dielectric metasurface consisting of a rectangular array of photonic crystal (PhC) cavities in a silicon PhC slab waveguide. The former metasurface is resonant at wavelengths that are much larger than the graphene elements of the metasurface, whereas the resonance wavelengths of the latter one are comparable to the size of its resonant components. By computing and comparing the …
The electromagnetic properties of an extremely thin metallic checkerboard drastically change from resonant reflection (transmission) to resonant transmission (reflection) when the local electrical conductivity at the interconnection points of the checkerboard is switched. To date, such critical transitions of metasurfaces have been applied only when they have 4-fold rotational symmetry, and their application to polarization control, which requires anisotropy, has been unexplored. To overcome this applicability limitation and open up new pathways for dynamic deep-subwavelength polarization cont…
An uncommon double-ray scenario of light resonant scattering by a periodic metasurface is proposed to provide strong non-specular reflection. The metasurface is constracted as an array of silicon nanodisks placed on thin silica-on-metal substrate. A low-lossy non-specular resonant reflection for any direction and any polarization of incident wave is revealed by a numerical simulation of light scattering. The conditions for the implementation of an autocollimation scheme of scattering and the observation of non-specular reflected ray that does not lie in the incidence plane are worked out. It i…
We study the resonant enhancement of linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects in asymmetric silicon metasurfaces supporting multipolar Mie resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). We demonstrate theoretically and observe in experiment the pronounced linear circular dichroism at the quasi-BIC resonances. We further find that both local field enhancement and third-harmonic signal are large for Mie resonances and some quasi-BIC modes. We explain the selectivity of the nonlinear enhancement by employing the concept of critical coupling being more favorable for the modes wit…
