Polar materials can host a variety of topologically significant magnetic phases, which often emerge from a modulated magnetic ground state. Relatively few noncentrosymmetric tetragonal materials have been shown to host topological spin textures and new candidate materials are necessary to expand the current theoretical models. This manuscript reports on the anisotropic magnetism in the polar, tetragonal material NdCoGe$_3$ via thermodynamic and neutron diffraction measurements. The previously reported $H$-$T$ phase diagram is updated to include several additional phases, which exist for both $H$ = 0 and with an applied field H$\perp$ c. Neutron diffraction data reveal that the magnetic structures below $T_{N1}$ = 3.70 K and $T_{N2}$ = 3.50 K are incommensurate, with a ground state magnetic order that is incommensurate in all directions with the propagation vector $\vec{k}$ = (0.494, 0.0044, 0.385) at 1.8 K. A unique magnetic structure solution is not achievable, but the possible single and multi-$\vec{k}$ spin models are discussed. These results demonstrate that NdCoGe3 hosts complicated magnetic order derived from modulated magnetic moments.
We report the magnetic properties strongly varying with the rare-earth elements in the newly found ternary compounds $R$Al$_{0.9}$Si$_{1.1}$, which crystallize in the tetragonal $α$-ThSi$_2$-type structure. For $R$ = Ce the alloy has a weak ferromagnetism below 11 K and for $R$ = Pr it orders ferromagnetically at 17 K, while for $R$ = Gd it is antiferromagnetic with $T_{\rm N}$ = 30.5 K. In addition, we find no field effect on $T_{\rm N}$ of $R$ = Gd because of the large internal mean field, but significant changes in the magnetic properties of $R$ = Ce and Pr.
We report measurements of the temperature dependence specific heat, magnetic susceptibility in single crystals of the series of intermetallic compounds Tb$_{1-x}$Y$_x$RhIn$_5$ (nominal concentrations $x= 0.15, 0.30, 0.40, 0.50$ and $0.70$). A mean field approximation to simulate the macroscopic properties along the series has been used. Neutron diffraction data in powdered sample of nominal concentration Tb$_{0.6}$Y$_{0.4}$RhIn$_5$ reveal AFM propagation vector $k=[\frac{1}{2}~0~\frac{1}{2}]$ with the magnetic moments oriented close to the tetragonal \textit{c} axis. We discuss the role of com…
In this work, we combined magnetization, pressure dependent electrical resistivity, heat-capacity, 63Cu Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering experiments to investigate the physical properties of the intermetallic CeCuBi2 compound. Our single crystals show an antiferromagnetic ordering at TN ~ 16 K and the magnetic properties indicate that this compound is an Ising antiferromagnet. In particular, the low temperature magnetization data revealed a spin-flop transition at T = 5 K when magnetic fields about 5.5 T are applied along the c-axis. Moreover, the X-ray m…
Based on magnetization, specific heat, magnetostriction, and neutron diffraction studies on single-crystal TbCo2B2C, it is found out that the paramagnetic properties, down to liquid nitrogen temperatures, are well described by a Curie-Weiss behavior of the Tb+3 moments. Furthermore, below Tc= 6.3 K, the Tb-sublattice undergoes a ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition with the easy axis being along the (100) direction and, concomitantly, the unit cell undergoes a tetragonal-to-orthorhhombic distortion. For fields up to 90 kOe, no field-induced splitting of the Co 3d orbitals was observed; as such …
Ferroquadrupole order associated with local $4f$ atomic orbitals of rare earth ions is a realization of electronic nematic order. However, there are relatively few examples of intermetallic materials which exhibit continuous ferroquadrupole phase transitions, motivating the search for additional materials that fall in to this category. Furthermore, it is not clear a priori whether experimental approaches based on transport measurements which have been successfully used to probe the nematic susceptibility in materials such as the Fe-based superconductors, will be as effective in the case of $4f…
In this work we report the physical properties of the new intermetallic compound TbRhIn5 investigated by means of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat-capacity and resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction experiments. TbRhIn5 is an intermetallic compound that orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 45.5 K, the highest ordering temperature among the existing RRhIn5 (1-1-5, R = rare earth) materials. This result is in contrast to what is expected from a de Gennes scaling along the RRhIn5 series. The X-ray resonant diffraction data below TN reveal a commensurate ant…
We report the discovery of structural phase transitions and superconductivity in the full Heusler compounds $X$Pd$_2$Sn ($X$ = Ti, Zr, Hf), by means of electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and x-ray diffraction measurements. TiPd$_2$Sn, ZrPd$_2$Sn and HfPd$_2$Sn undergo structural phase transitions from the room-temperature cubic MnCu$_2$Al-type structure (space group $Fm\bar{3}m$) to a low-temperature tetragonal structure at around 160 K, 110 K and 90 K, respectively, which are likely related charge density wave (CDW) instabilities. Low temperature single crystal x-ray…
We present here a neutron diffraction study, both in zero field and as a function of magnetic field, of the magnetic structure of the tetragonal intermetallic \eun\ on a single crystalline sample. This material is known to undergo a cascade of transitions, first at 13.2\,K towards an incommensurate modulated magnetic structure, then at 10.5\,K to an equal moment, yet undetermined, antiferromagnetic structure. We show here that the low temperature phase presents a spiral moment arrangement with wave-vector {\bf k} = ($\frac{1}{4},δ,0)$. For a magnetic field applied along the tetragonal {\bf c}-…
We have performed X-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity, heat capacity and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to investigate the physical properties of the intermetallic series of compounds CeCuBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space group $P4/nmm$ and present antiferromagnetic transition temperatures ranging from 3.6 K to 16 K. Remarkably, the magnetization easy axis changes along the series, which is closely related to the variations of the tetragonal crystalline electric field (CEF) parameters. This evolution was analyze…
Polycrystalline samples of Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2, Sr2Mn3As2O2, and Sr2Zn2MnAs2O2 were synthesized. Their temperature- and applied magnetic field-dependent structural, transport, thermal, and magnetic properties were characterized by means of x-ray and neutron diffraction, electrical resistivity rho, heat capacity, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These compounds have a body-centered-tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4/mmm) that consists of MO2 (M = Zn and/or Mn) oxide layers similar to the CuO2 layers in high superconducting transition temperature Tc cuprate superconduc…
Unraveling the magnetic and electronic complexity of intermetallic ErPd$_2$Si$_2$: Anisotropic thermal expansion, phase transitions, and twofold magnetotransport behavior
The tetragonal intermetallic compound EuAl$_{4}$ hosts an exciting variety of low temperature phases. In addition to a charge density wave below 140 K, four ordered magnetic phases are observed below 15.4 K. Recently, a skyrmion phase was proposed based on Hall effect measurements under a $c$-axis magnetic field. We present a detailed investigation of the phase transitions in EuAl$_{4}$ under $c$-axis magnetic field. Our dilatometry, heat capacity, DC magnetometry, AC magnetic susceptibility, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements reveal three magnetic phase transitions not previous…
We experimentally investigate the symmetry in the Hidden Order (HO) phase of intermetallic URu2Si2 by mapping the lattice and magnetic excitations via inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements in the HO and high-temperature paramagnetic phases. At all temperatures the excitations respect the zone edges of the body-centered tetragonal paramagnetic phase, showing no signs of reduced spatial symmetry, even in the HO phase. The magnetic excitations originate from transitions between hybridized bands and track the Fermi surface, whose feature are corroborated by the phonon measurements. D…

Heavy fermion (HF) materials exhibit a rich array of phenomena due to the strong Kondo coupling between their localized moments and itinerant electrons. A central question in their study is to understand the interplay between magnetic order and charge transport, and its role in stabilizing new quantum phases of matter. Particularly promising in this regard is a family of tetragonal intermetallic compounds Ce{$TX$}$_2$ ($T=$ transition metal, $X=$ pnictogen), that includes a variety of HF compounds showing $T$-linear electronic specific heat $\bf{C_e \sim γT}$, with $γ\sim$ 20-500 mJ$\cdot$mol$…
Intermetallic Pd-doped (Fe,Ni)$_3$P, that crystalizes in a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal structure with $S_4$ symmetry, has recently been discovered to host magnetic antiskyrmions, antivortex-like topological spin textures. In this material, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and dipolar interactions play a significant role, giving rise to finely branched magnetic domain patterns near the surface of bulk crystals, as revealed by a previous magnetic force microscopy (MFM) measurement. However, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a more suitable method for characterizing bulk properties and frac…
